It catches up to you later. He also had unhealthy habits with the sporanos and damaged his health to put his all into the role
The stories of Gandolfini's hard partying exploits are legendary. The Sopranos crew we're forced to shoot around his partying schedule. But the show was such a success, they did it without question. Massive cocaine use and obesity no doubt took a huge toll on Gandolfini's health. We lost a great one.

The first time I saw James Gandolfini was in True Romance, which came out in 1993. If you haven't seen it check it out. It is a wild ride of a movie in which Gandolfini has a small role as a very menacing mob enforcer. He stole the scenes he was in and it would not surprise me a bit to learn that his role in True Romance led to his casting in the Sopranos.
When I first heard of The Sopranos, I thought a Mob show with a psychiatrist wouldn't be any good. Then I learned James was the lead and I remembered him from his 3 scenes in True Romance.
Especially the one in which he explains the psychological effects of killing several people to a woman. That's why I gave the show a chance.
8MM was when people really took notice of Jim's immense talent.

I met James Gandolfini working as a security guard at AMNH two times. Honestly he was pushy and not nice to the guards. He acted like we should let him in for free with no security check. Also he thought we needed to let his friends in free with no security check.
This being said he was great as Tony.

I had the pleasure of meeting James Gandolfini in person when he was filming the last two episodes of the Sopranos. He was a really nice fellow who was very supportive of law enforcement. Also, the camera did not fully capture just how large a man he was; he easily stood over 6' tall with huge hands and broad shoulders. It was really heartbreaking to learn of his passing at a much too young age.
God bless you Michael, James Gandolfini was a brilliant actor. Rest in peace to him. 🇮🇹

That NY Post headline was so stupid -- if you watch the David Chase documentary, it was clear Gandolfini gave the money to the lower level cast members. Edie Falco was the second highest paid actor on the show next to Ganolfini, meaning she was making millions and millions per season. And Falco was JOKING in the documentary when she pretends to be "mad" she didn't get $30k.
Of course she gott paid from James as well as the other cast members. :)

@Micheal-Knight- I'm always thinking about it when I re watch both. The Sopranos acting kinda trended down after 5. Meanwhile, Walt turned into the Micheal Jordan of bad guys in Season 5. The whole cast put up Emmy performances in season 5. It was and still is a joy to watch. It never lets me down.

@Micheal-Knight- maybe . But I think it was the fatigue of the show. He hated the character. He hated David. He was older, overweight, and whatever he was on(im not going to speculate). You see it with the end of G.o.t. also. The characters are there, but not really. Most of them were also tired of the show.The writers will check out as well when they know the end is near. That's what makes breaking bad final season so much better. They didn't check out. They checked in.

I've always liked that you said that one of the reasons for your conversion was that you could not believe that 11 (12 minus Judas) men would be hated, reviled and then finally die a horrific death for something they didn't believe in 100 percent. If they had really lied about the resurrection, it's not believable that a group of men, being under the pressure that they were, would keep that secret. That's the unbelievability of atheism/agnosticism.
Not only that but also the countless Christians who willingly sacrificed their lives before Rome had converted to Christianity. It had the opposite effect of what was intended,they thought no one would dare continue to practice the faith knowing how dangerous it was but all it did was recruit more people. I refer to it as “satan’s most humiliating defeat”
Had no idea how hard acting could be until Heath Ledger died. It makes sense Gandolfini struggled.
thats a myth people make, it's been proven by close ones that Heath didn't struggle because of the character.
There's also the non-acting stress of that position. Pretty much everyone is dependent on you being an awesome actor for the show to continue for them to keep having a job, all the way from the actors to the crew.

Watching for the very first time right now. On season 3 and it’s phenomenal. The entire cast especially James is just perfect. I’m glued to it when I’m not working or at school. This show is just wonderful. It’s 25 years old so sadly of course I already knew/know some major plot lines going in but it hasn’t taken me out at all. James Gandolfini is just amazing man. Rest in peace to an absolute legend in the industry.
You’ve got no idea how good it’s gonna get in seasons 4-6b it is haunting. The end is like the final act of Macbeth, terrifying, beautiful, addicting.

I saw an interview recently with David Chase and he was asked if he was surpised when Gandolfini passed. He just looked right at the interviewer and dryly said, "no" or something along those lines. He explained the way he was living and not taking care of himself. In fact, all the cast members were worried they would hear of his passing while filing.
I saw Al Pacino in Scarface as a kid and by the time I saw him in Godfather III I said to a friend hey why is that Cuban brother playing an Italian. Pacino was so convincing to me in Scarface that I thought he was Cuban

Michael as a Neapolitan, yes the show was very out there. There are no women Camorra bosses but when they go to Italy in one episode, the Camorra boss is a woman. No drug dealing is also BS. The Camorra deals drugs, lots of drugs. There was an area in Naples that didn't even have a name, it was a numbered section called the 167. This was known as an open drug market controlled by the Camorra. They even had a city bus route out to the area to bus in addicts and bus them out. It's been mostly cleaned up now but back in the late 1990s early 2000s, it was the wild west. If you weren't buying drugs, you didn't go down there or you're not coming back out. It was so bad that they tested new formulas on addicts. Basically seeing how far they could push the purity before it would kill people. Really sick stuff...wIth that said, there was a few things that were related to real life in the show. Tony was in waste management. The Camorra at the time the show aired, had their fingers in waste management and illegally dumping toxic waste for big corps from all over Europe on private land around Naples(La Terra dei Fuochi). It has caused all sorts of birth defects and cancer in the population that live in these areas.
Not sure if you have read the book Gomorrah by Roberto Saviano but you should give it a read. He infiltrated the Camorra and exposed so much of their workings. Another business they are in is fashion. Big fashion brands(Gucci, Versace, D and G, etc) would go for the lowest bidder down in southern Italy to make their garments. One of the guys who was a dressmaker made a dress that ended up on Angelina Jolie at the Oscars and the guy never got credit for it. He designed it and made it himself. The brand slapped their name on it and gave it to the movie star. They made a movie in Italy about it but it was not that great. It also spawned an award winning series on Sky in Europe. Netflix picked it up for the first 2 seasons but then I guess they couldn't keep the rights or whatever with Sky.
James was in Rome when he passed. I remember he was there with his son visiting on vacation. I know because I was in Naples at the time and I remember seeing it on the Telegiornale(TV News) and it saddened me because I knew he was a good guy and he left us way too soon.

Do they say in the show that The Camorra doesn’t deal drugs? I don’t remember that part ik Christopher gets introduced to heroin when they’re in Naples and the Soprano family is actively involved in drugs with Uncle June and Richie selling Coke in season 2.

Michael has brought it up many times that if you were in the life and you got caught dealing drugs, you were done for. I haven't watched Sopranos in a while but I think Christopher was dealing cocaine earlier in the series as well as being a drug addict. I remember he was scared to death of Tony finding out.

I had read somewhere that James Gandolfini had based his portrayal of Tony Soprano on Sonny Franzese Michaels dad.
I thought James Gandolfini did a great job in "Burt Wonderstone". He plays a casino owner, it was a similar role to Tony Soprano, being a wealthy casino owner, but he played the role differently enough for me to not just see Tony Soprano on the screen.

Michael is selling James’ acting ability short. Did he absolutely crush Tony S? Of course! He’s also crushed every other role he’s ever played. From Lt in Crimson Tide, to the mayor in Pelham 123, to the cia director in ZD30, or even to the random mob guy in The Drop - James sold me on the character he was playing every time and I only saw him as the great Tony Soprano in the Sopranos. James was an absolute legend. RIP.

I read James had been to dinner in Rome with his son. They returned to the hotel and Jimmy collapsed in the bathroom. His son ran in there and raised the alarm. RIP a truly great actor and brilliant show. I cried like a baby when I heard the news which is unusual for me.

If you want to see James Gandolfini in another role that works for him, watch "True Romance". This was several years before Soprano's. A friend & I watched it when it 1st came out & we both commented on his character & how impressive his relatively short scene was.
I thought this tbh. JG would get very stressed while on set which isn’t good for you . JG was brilliant in True Romance.Michael he was in Rome when he passed and apparently the Actor that played Ralphie ( Joey P ) mentioned something once about how James ate 3 steaks while doing a certain scene . James did change massively in the 8 years the series ran meaning his weight changed hugely.

I can say that without a doubt that the Sopranos definitely put a lot of stress and strain on james gandolfini. Especially considering that he would work 16 hours a day, by doing the most extreme things just to fit the character can definitely kill your body. Now I don’t know if the weight gain was purposely done to make himself as Tony or if David Chase allowed it just to play around with the story would do a number on him.

3 things, #1 Even though James was not Tony in his general nature, the $30k kickback to the team shows he was a true boss at heart. A good boss, a true alpha always takes care of his people. #2 Yes after hearing all these back stories I likewise believe the pressure of playing that role for 8yrs took it's toll on the big guy. I recently realized that James is the only actor that was in every single episode of the show. The entire show revolves around Tony's storyline. That's heavy. #3 Mike it's good to see you finally took your time to dig deep into the most brilliant show ever created. You're right, it will still be watched a hundred years from now because it's actually a study of life when you look close. It breaks down the dynamics of relationships and people from every angle.

James Gandolfini essentially "lived" that role in front of the camera. 110%! It takes a toll on you. I feel for him. Stepping out to drugs and alcohol.... wasn't an answer but we weren't there, and maybe we don't know all. He was too young to go, but as a Christian Man, God makes those decisions. Every day is a great blessing. I'm glad James gave his Best!

I did watch a season or two of the Suprano's. While watching J.Gandalfini play Tony, all I kept thinking was this guy would make a great Archie Bunker. I mean everything about his body language, facial expressions, the way he carried himself, his eyes his smile, was all so similar to Carol O'Connor.
I'm just curious: Am I the only person who recognized this quality in Jane's?
