Here’s my N=1 experience. I owned a B8 S4 that suffered water pump failure, required extra oil between changes, and began to experience DSG failure. Before the tranny crapped out, I traded it in for a 2018 B9. That car has gone 62,000 miles without a single mechanical issue. Also, it is not burning off oil between changes but I still carry an extra quart in the car baes on my B8 experience. Amazingly for an Audi, this has been the most reliable new car I have owned.
I also had 2 S4 B8s, but with manual gearbox, therefore a problem less than the automatics. Mine also used - some - oil, but nothing terrible. I did have to do the timing chain, which is a 5500€ job here in Germany. otherwise, if changing all oils often enough, it's a good simple engine that holds up quite well, without many small annoying issues.
Consider changing to 5w-30. I switched over on my 2018 and it’s quieted the engine a bit. The rocker issue our cars have has shown to possibly be from the thin ow-20 oil
Hi everyone, I've had my 2017 B9 S4 for over 2 years now, got the car around 40k, now it's shy of 60k, I had serviced it every 6 months/8k miles max for oil and filter (with the dealer to keep the full history) and the rest as per the normal routine or DIY for filters and small repairs, I did not experience any of the issues mentioned on the video here, rockers are fine no ticking noise yet, WaterP coils, no oil or coolant leaks no turbo noise, etc, but I have replaced 2 lower suspension mounts for £40 in total parts and labour, a heated mirror (normal stuff) and besides brakes, tires, and consumables which I also repalaced all of them, the biggest problem that I had but it was a cheap fix for me (I think is a common issue on all post-2016 Audi's not only the S4's) I did get a random message one day about the braking system and the ABS not functioning as intended on a white text no error light or codes but the brakes felt wierd, I parked the vehicle imediatelly and went to do my reasearch, found that loads of people had the same issue with the brake boost pressure sensor (got 3 revisions now especially bad on the first revision pre 2018 cars, like mine), which I replaced myself fixing the issue completely for about £90 for the part alone and about 15 minutes of my time (about 1 year in my ownership with no further issues with that system), I do personally expect the rest of the issues to pop eventually as nothing last forever but so far so good, I did not experience high oil consumption I only used 1 l of oil since I bought the car 2.5 years ago, I noticed that I used 200-300 ml alone on a trip in Germany (4k miles round trip) but that trip was in the summer and also at constant high speeds (over 120 miles on average), I usually give the vehicle a good run per week, and go traveling in Europe in the mountains, the car is driven as it is supposed to be driven with no excuses, on my stock car the top speed on the german autobahn was 162mph (262 kph) and it could have gone quicker still as it was still pulling at that speed :)
I had a 2019 S4, from new until 39,000km, no problems at all. I did drive spiritedly from time to time, this vehicle is a Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing. It is very planted and sits well in the road. I did a driving Holiday (in Queensland Australia) 5,500km in 10 days, winding hilly (fun) stuff to Long Highway Stretches, i did not get caught behind any Grey Nomads (some times they were 7 to 8 in a row) thank God people still flash you for Police. On the whole trip 7.3 litres per 100 kilometres, and on the highway (still passing Grey Nomads) 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres. I did have to do an Oil Top Up 1 litre added. I drive in Comfort and simply use the shifter to go into Sport to Pass if extra power was needed. All systems go and thoroughly enjoyed the “Planted Feel” and trip. Brakes were fine, however I did the research on new Rotors and Ceramic Pads, very similar cost to OEM how much better wear so cheaper if you held the vehicle for a long period of time. I now live O/S, would buy another new one except they want to sell me a Diesel, no thanks. Daytona Grey, Black Optics Pack, Carbon Pack, and basically Fully Optioned. I did change the badges to black and added larger Paddle Shifters, with very minimal changes it looked smick.
My dad said he’d go 50/50 on a car with me no matter what. He bought an a4 but during the test week deal he made he found out it was a lemon, decided to get an s4 prestige. Ever since he said that, and bought that car. I’ve been saving up. I’m probably 2 months away from my own s4. I told him how much I saved he couldn’t believe it. I love this car so far. Went out one night and stole my dads car. Gotta have it.
I have a 2018 b9 s4 prem plus for 38k miles, stock, for almost 6 years now. Planning to get rid of it soon, but it has been problem free, oil changed DIY every 5k. Best daily I've had.
I have a 2018 S5, bought two years old. Has 39k miles, had to change the engine mounts, upper control arm bushings and coolant module. Mynwife drives it now. No tune but have KWHas and 034 motorsport, upper tie bar and HR reaer sway bar. She likes it, frankly I.never did really csr for the turbo lag
It’s not the turbo on these cars it’s causing the lag it’s the gearbox badly tuned from stock. The car uses gear 7 for 50mph which is bad tuning if you shift to gear 5 around 60mph and above it will drive incredible!
Thanks for this. Im looking at buying one myself as I've found a couple of lovely examples. Everything has teething problems, im.halpy to take a chance on these small things. Great video.
Great video and great info, I'm assuming that the engine in the S4 is the same as the S5, and you haven't mentioned anything about the rocker arm bearings failing, is this something you see that often as it seems to be a real problem for the S5, is the engine in the S4 in the video a B8 or B9 and is the B9 more reliable than the B8, I was looking to buy an S5 with a B9 engine, but the rocker arm problem put me off, maybe you could do a similar video on the S5.
I had a 2018 bought new that I put 25k on and had zero problems. currently have a 2020 that Ive put 42k on over the past 3 years. had the bluetooth module crap out, replaced under warranty. It has developed a little bit of vibration at lower speeds at full lock i.e. parking. Plugged the exhaust valves because they were rattling. HPFP is loud but you get used to it. But other than that, it's a fantastic car. No faults or other failures. it will ingest debris into the airbox and block up the prefilter, so I clean that out every car wash.
I have a stage 2 94k milage 2018 B9 S4 (2017 to very early 2019) rocker arms are going to fail, the motor seals were all flat, the oil cooler was leaking oil, you want to ch age the water pump, PCV, Water pump, thermostat.. it’s a great car but you have to keep up with things you can’t see. The hubs on theres cars also take a beating.
Have most of these issues been ironed out with the B9.5 version? The B10 looks drop dead gorgeous but I'm scared to death of more issues with the added complexity of the mild hybrid system from a reliability standpoint
Have a 2010 B8 S4 in the U.S. Here is a list of the issues i have had beyond normal wear and tear (brakes/tires) 1: Recall on the water pump and thermostat were covered under warranty 2: Left rear shock failed - got a suspension failure error in the dash at 27K miles - Fixed under warranty 3: Mechatronics failure at 25K miles. Fixed under warranty 4: Rear center brake light failure 5: Front upper control arms replaced both sides - bushings worn and cracked.. at 80K miles 6: The thermostat failed at 100K miles. This resulted in replacing the thermostat, water pump and performing the carbon clean out on the valves since the the top of the engine needed to be opened up. That was a $4K bill.. ouch... All in all, the reliability of the car is very good. I knew that around 100K miles, some big-cost repairs may start to show up. I also had a smaller supercharger pulley installed at 40K miles and really really love what it turned the car into. I do not drive my car hard and keep it in good shape with 5k oil changes. Think I like it more than the 98' M3 i owned, though I miss the manual transmission in the audi.
Had 2 issues with mines in the past 6 months of ownership 1) Fuel cap not opening - Fixed under warranty 2)AC not blowing cold - Waiting to be fixed under warranty.
This video can literally be made about any car on the market. All cars have their own unique issues when faced with an error in faulty car not version.
I have a 2019 s4 and the steering just locked up. Maintenance done, new battery, only at 54k miles. Researching it looks like I will have to replace the dynamic steering rack
Make sure I’d you have to do the thermostat you make the dealer check for warranty coverage on it. Audi lost class action lawsuit on that model of thermostat so they extended warranty coverage. Had mine done couple weeks ago on 2018 and didn’t pay a dime
I’m looking for 1 now . I know or hear something with the rocker arms or something around there . I’ve read if you buy the 19 and over they had the updated
anyone else randomly have terrible fuel economy? i had a tire that was leaking air and it killed my fuel economy, i got it replaced and it immediately made it better but i will still randomly get gas mileage in the low teens and i have no idea why.
I’ve been looking at the B9 S4 but heard and seen the horror stories of the rocker arm needle bearing dropping out and causing major engine failure , is this something you’ve came across or heard of
2019 onwards they fixed the rocker arm issue. 2017-18 still suffers from that but it's recommended to put 5w40 oil in those so the rocker arms don't get too hot and start to fall apart.
About to purchase a S4 avant with 110 000 miles. Looks like in great condition with audi check done recently. But what should I expect as I won’t use it that much in terms of common issue given the fact that is not so new? Thanks

Ive had one about 8 months 2017, 60k, ive had to replace PCV valve as i was burning away oil, felt sluggish aswell under those conditions. I have a nurburgring trip booked in march originally for my megane RS but thats sold so will be taking the S4😂 i dont want it to die so im thinking of stickint 5w 40 in but im actually nervous of taking it as im not fully swept up with issues i may come across on there yet
@andrewnoble1490 surprisingly well for a stock car. I only have the megane to compare it to and it's night and day in the corners, could really feel the weight in the audi compared. I was at about 60% through the bends but 100 on the straights and it was a decent 9 min odd lap in heavy traffic. I won't be doing any more track time in this as it's not what it's meant for unless you throw some serious 💷 in to it
@Mo55y90 I've got a megane rs and I'm seriously considering picking up a b9 s5 convertible. It's clearly going to be heavier and softer than the s4 and miles off what feeling of the megane. Did you have any issues and is yours stock? The occasional nurburgring trip/random trackday is mandatory.
Have this engine in my 2019 base water pump coolant system went bad car was overheating 5000$ later we’re back to see if it’s the thermostat as the car is still overheating.. I have a 3.6 vr older but more reliable they say the hot v are high heat
Guys I know times have changed since covid/parts shortage but now things here in the UK are easing up, money here is a bit different to that in the USA but my current car 2011 A3 black edition 2.0 tdi now on 2011 got it in 2015 on 35k mileage for 13000 pounds, so Now im looking at an S4 wouldn't say I am a real petrol head or maybe don't have the ability to appeciate like you guys the speed and torque and looks and refinement of the S4 I've got a desposit down for a S4 2018 with 40k mileage for a whopping 25k that's a lot for me but part of me begrudges the fact I am giving over a lot of money for a 6 year old car which means after just 3/4 years it will be coming up to 10 years old yes they hold their value here to some extent, but prices have dropped 10 percent in the last 4 months. What do you think maybe just wait it out another month or 2 or get something more normal A4 Sline maybe?
@@perrykendall228 Hello mate - Yes I did in the end I went for the S4 2018 with 41 miles now on 43200 miles. I wasn't paying too much attention when I got the car not being a petrol head but did get 2 year warranty and gap insurance for free and a slight discount. Car's been fine, only issue was who ever did the oil change caused it to leak but luckily I took it in and they cleaned it up. It came with S5 tyres which I didn't realise but some lovel external mods, I hope to God it's not been modified in terms of engine and reset i went on trusting the Audi dealership but only real annoyance was I didn't check for scratched and they didn't fix them and there 's a small line where a baby seat in the middle rear is where the stitching has some out, it's not a tear it just doesn't look pretty. So when breaking sometimes the presense alert comes on the screen and the other dealership said to me it's likely caused by having S5 tryes so I've switched presense off as it was breaking by itself and I find it very off putting, yes it's there for your own safety but don't quite trust it. Other than that it's a good ride and it looks the part and it's loud but expensive to run starting to realise I don't enjoy paying 70 quid every 2 weeks to fill the tank lol, and I wfh and hardly even around apart from going into london which is only 20 miles away every weekend. Not sure if I will keep it long term the buzz of driving of fast and the engine sound etc is great but I don't think it will last with me. I also scratched the trims and reversed into a trolly on a rainy day causing some scratches - really f'd me off at the time. I haven't even really bothered to clean it myself either which tells me I don't quite have the passion for it. It is a sick car and handles well and it's so much more comfortable than my A3 Sline in terms of room for my legs and less bumpy, way less bumpy.
eh youll hear more bad then good about them. no one gets on here and says i love my rocker arms... they just come to complain if they break. is it more of an issue pre 2019 yeah. worry about it? nah.

I have a nurburgring trip booked in march originally for my megane RS but thats sold so will be taking the S4😂 i dont want it to die so im thinking of stickint 5w 40 in but im actually nervous of taking it as im not fully swept up with issues i may come across on there yet
Did you go to the ring?
@andrewnoble1490 yes easter weekend mate
@@Mo55y90 how did it perform?
They changed the rocker arm design late 2018 because the roller bearings were falling out.
Its not 5W-30 castor but 0w-20.?
pcv fallure too
Around what mile does this happen
@@Magmaplayss mines happened around 32k
Guys I know times have changed since covid/parts shortage but now things here in the UK are easing up, money here is a bit different to that in the USA but my current car 2011 A3 black edition 2.0 tdi now on 2011 got it in 2015 on 35k mileage for 13000 pounds, so Now im looking at an S4 wouldn't say I am a real petrol head or maybe don't have the ability to appeciate like you guys the speed and torque and looks and refinement of the S4
I've got a desposit down for a S4 2018 with 40k mileage for a whopping 25k that's a lot for me but part of me begrudges the fact I am giving over a lot of money for a 6 year old car which means after just 3/4 years it will be coming up to 10 years old
yes they hold their value here to some extent, but prices have dropped 10 percent in the last 4 months. What do you think maybe just wait it out another month or 2 or get something more normal A4 Sline maybe?
did you buy?
I hate when people get carbon build up on their engines. Literally 1-2 pulls a day keeps it aeay
Two words here: Rocker Arms. I wouldn't touch any pre-2021 B9 model with a 10-foot barge pole.
S4 or even normal a4 ?
You're a beta though so don't say much.
@@jimmymcgoo8641 beta? what do you mean by this?
Was this revised for the B9.5s ?
eh youll hear more bad then good about them. no one gets on here and says i love my rocker arms... they just come to complain if they break. is it more of an issue pre 2019 yeah. worry about it? nah.
Does anyone with a b9 have a failing lpfp
So, nothing really wrong with THIS S4, correct?
