- Welcome to another video.
This time the same old story about the S4 B9 . A bit of a special video , because we received this car directly from the dealership after several months standing there . Owner if this S4 was really disappointed with a bill from Audi for finding the problem . Once he decided he had enough the car came to us as a non runner and the parts from the engine were in the back . If that's not enough , while stripping the engine down at dealers , they manage to damage some parts and after all this they advise the owner he needs a new engine ....
Will we be able to fix this one ? Or Audi was right and we need a new engine?
More in the video, thanks for watching !
If you need rocker arm service or chain service please visit our website

please book your car in advance , usually booking time is two months in advance
For a guy whose first language isn't English you do a fantastic job of explaining all the technical parts of your job , You'd make a great teacher. Love your videos. PS Audi owner's are lucky to have you in the UK .
if I had to guess the first language is Hungarian.
naaaa, Welsh @@nukez88
@@nukez88 They are Slovaks.
Agreed 👌
I would name and shame them and they would be paying for the damage they caused it’s a good job you guys are here to fix them properly. Certainly if I owend a Audi you would be my go to garage 👍👍
I would as well, the thing is VAG techic still needs to get his spares from them so he needs to be careful what he says ,although in this case he has exposed very shoddy dealership work
@@lesbaty8919 Thats not a reason. Looking at the work, I really dont believe its from a Audi dealer. at 5 mins, he says something as absurd as, The dealer must of not had the tool and they used a pliers or something. WTF Dude, Yeah totally makes sense, they dont have it, only your workshop has the "AUDI" Tool. there are so many things and comments he makes doesnt add up
Actually it's not the first time I've seen dealers do things like this- for some of them the logo over the door means nothing! @@canoaslan1011
You Guys are Awesome!!! If only more VAG techs took as much pride in diagnosing and repairing these cars the world (VAG world) would be in a better place!
VW and Audi could make their part and make a car that is somewhat reliable. Can't have cars with 140k needing a full rebuild due to faulty chain tensioners or oiling issues, plus electrical issues.
I've attempted to get work as a technician with audi/vw multiple times but they aren't hiring anyone who actually knows these cars
They sure are, BEST OF THE BEST, I'd say
I always said that there are no bad cars.. but only bad technicians. Cars are very complicated things so it is close to impossible to make them faultless.
@@texfromroI like the way you think 👍 I think the same
You guys do excellent work! Today, that's a rarity in the industry. Keep it up ...and keep uploading!
Coming from a 20 year VW Master Tech in the US, you guys definitely do great quality work. Well done!
Please tell me that the owner of the B9 is taking that shady dealer to court! Corporate needs to be involved at a minimum. I’ve seen you guys take probably close to a hundred engines apart and I’ve never seen you treat customer equipment like that. Glad they were able to get you guys to help.
Total respect for your knowledge and professionalism, I’ve never really trusted the main dealers. Shame you’re not located in Scotland. Keep the videos coming, love watching them and educating. 👍🏼👍🏼
I would go to you guys for any repair & servicing. You guys do great work, better than the actual Audi dealers. I hope you guys get more customers. Greetings from NZ!
A fellow Kiwi loving these guys & their work! Wish they were here in NZ as I'd have my car(08 RS4-B7) serviced by them in a heartbeat!!
The fact you keep it real and don't sugarcoat stuff is the reason I've subscribed. Seen your vids come up in my feed a couple times you guys do good work, hope you blow up on TH-cam.
You guys are seriously awesome. I also had a bad experience at the Audi dealership with my B5 S4 years ago due to all of the recalls it was getting if anyone remembers those times. The 1st recall letter wasn't so bad and I got a rental but by the 4th recall letter, it was starting to get annoying and also they weren't helping with rentals and they suddenly changed the terms and conditions of their extended warranty to not cover rentals. I ended up using my insurance for a rental and they approved it( thank you GEICO BTW). Car was great after I kept it with an independent VAG shop in town and it has been a god send. Much respect for your videos and thanks for sharing it. As an American, I find it funny that I understand your English much better than the native English speakers. Kudos for that. But that's just me and my bum ears.
Great video - after 30 yrs of running fast Audi's - mostly tuned S8's - I only ever used the dealerships when the cars were under warranty - as soon as they fell out of warranty I used a good specialist for servicing and repairs - like you, they have more knowledge in a small team than the larger teams in the dealerships. They care more and charge far less. I think a second lesson is to treat this type of car like an aircraft and research a preemptive maintenance plan based on what typically goes wrong - especially if, like the example here, failure could cause very expensive damage. I recently did this for my wife's BMW 5 series (520d) and was surprised at how many things posed a risk (e.g. the plastic inlet manifold can fail and drop the butterfly valves into the cylinders.. When we (preemptively) took it off (at 100k) one of them was near failure and only a few 1000 miles off collapse.
I like this channel and I like this owner . He’s very competent and I’m sure his work is outstanding.
You guys are THE VAG specialists!
Awesome work love it!
As an Audi fan, I have watched a lot of similar videos, but I have never received such thorough information about Audi technology.
You gents are proper professional. Love the channel. The honesty you give is top notch and the work is always done properly. I have a 15 Mk7 GTI and would be absolutely livid with this situation. I've been in a VW for the past 10 years and the stealership always gives problems upon every visit. Keep up the great work guys. If I lived in the UK I know where I would be bringing my vehicle!
Love you episodes. The saying goes.. Wear and tear. Not tear and wear. Just thought I would mention it. Not to make you feel bad just so you know. You guys are amazing techs. Keep up the hard work. Brilliant videos
😀
I thought the actual saying is "wear and tear" NOT "tear and wear".
19:30 - Good and fair point. Anyone car buy virtually any car, they key is affording the repair costs. My 2009 Volvo V70 has been stripped for parts and sold off, as it's no longer financially viable to keep replacing parts. I'd always recommend buying a car outright, rather than financing, yet it's important to know when to stop spending money to fix the car.
Experiencing almost the same here in my country, except they are an indie shop. The car went in for a simple timing chain and cam replacement. They messed everything up but still paid for their labour and the car is a non runner
surely on this evidence Audi should meet the costs? Or be compelled to by making a claim in court.......misdiagnosis is one thing but destroying parts willfully is quite another!
Tbh I'm not convinced that German engineering is the quality it was once was.
Well VAG certainly isn't !
Being an 2017 Audi S5 B9 Sportback owner on 45000 miles this rocker arm issue is scary....
I have the exact same car and miles lol. I'm considering selling it after these video's, seems like a ticking time bomb and £4k just to service the rocker arms is scary 🥴
My car was in Audi dealer 2 months back for warranty work I did ask the 'Service Advisor's to ask the mechanics or check the Audi bulletin regarding this (which I also emailed her on) got blanked. So will email Audi direct on this issue and will use these video as evidence of the underlying issue with the rocker arms.
@@masmahmood You can try but like the mechanic in the video says, Audi revised the rockers arms hush hush so there won't be a bulletin. Seems like it's our issue now 😢
@@off9999 will have to bide my time and see what occurs, my car engine/gearbox is all stock so if it occurs will have to argue my way (just dreading the time they change the oil and say the have found flakes of metal in the filter or oil) honestly what the point in getting your car maintenance done by them if they cant honour warranty.
B9 S5 owner here with 60K miles and unfortunately I have the rocker arm issue. My car is booked in with the Vag Technic guys for next month
I wish your fantastic team was here in the USA. I would not trust anyone with my 2005 S4 Avant manual V8 service except you! Maybe you can travel over here when I am in need of a timing service?? ;)
With every video I watch (which is a lot these days) I wish you were here in the 'states... I'd buy with a lot more confidence if I knew we had a shop like yours over here for my "old" Audi's, lol.
I work in the marine industry, Volvo penta use basically volvo engines modified for sea water cooling, early volvo engines run camshafts where the lobes contact directly with inverted buckets opening the valves, dont understand why some engine manufacturers complicate the valve gear by still using rocker arms after the camshaft ?
Quality work guys as always. I would be taking the Audi dealer to the small claims court to get my money back.
Shocked at what an Audi dealership did. Pity you guys aren't based in Scotland. I'd definitely be a regular customer for service and repair work on my SQ5.
Dang I wish I could send my old S4 with you guys, I'm from the US and I've struggled to find a good mechanic, the last one literally blew my engine.
Same, I’m willing to travel states if I need to
I had similar issue with audio dealership in northampton...... total idiots working behing the counter..... you guys are doing great job
Huh i never knew Stevie worked for Audi ....wonders never cease
Pirate map - oh that was so funny but so very true also. Watching these videos almost makes me want to buy an old S4 just so I can bring it to you guys for love and care.
note on how the injectors look, the one you showed that was pretty seized, that's the compression seal for the injector mating surface to the head orifice, its made out of a teflon material so when the seals wear out over time the compression is lost, right at that point you showed in the video, also as a result there is carbon buildup because of blowby gasses.
Brilliant upload, a team who cares as much about the owners car as the owner. Unbelievable a main dealer has treated this car and owner in the manner it did, they are not fit to trade.
Fantastic job you smashed it 👊🇬🇧
Wow, thats crazy! Main dealers just aren't trained to repair anymore, just replace.
Man brings back memories when I first replaced my phasers. Nerve racking but I was able to do it and retime everything.
Someone at Halesowen Audi is getting a written warning ⚠️ 😅 I'm a ex Audi tech and I can tell you , this isn't the normal quality of workmanship. Terrible workmanship. Technician needs to seriously rethink his life choices.
This guy is the VAG. Verified Audi God.
Great video, you boys show how interested you are in the cars you look after !
Owner must be in the clouds with this "easy" repair. 😅
Really informative video guys. I am thankful my A8 is a 2015 D4. I know there can still be issues with my 2015 3 litre tdi but the D5 is concerning. I absolutely wish to have an oil pressure remap, and as my car has 50k a gearbox service too. I will be in touch soon to book the car in. 🙏🏻
⚠️WOW !
MDM main dealer muppetry.
Why would anyone go to them ???
Great channel 👏
While traveling, my car, S4 B9, became a christmas tree. Went to first Audi dealer, did diag and said: We dont have the knowledge here today, go see the other audi dealers maybe they have. The second dealer said: Leave the car, maybe in 3 weeks it will be repaired 😂 The last dealer, the electro technician identified the issue and fixed it in 2h. So it really depends, and a big thanks to the first dealer to be honest, and the third to have saved my vacation, but a big #@! to the second one...
Quality techs and I like the way you're not scared to talk about the money side of the work.A but too far away from me unfortunately .
As always, great job and great video! Thanks for doing that!
Breh I’d cry if I seen my car like that… I wanted to get s4/rs4 avant but after watching you for around a year I don’t think my sanity or pockets could be prepared if something this drastic happened 😂🫡
I'D never be worrying to buy an audi or a vw group car if we had u in my country
You guys are the best audi mechanics technicians. I love it. I wish you guys had a shop here in American Dallas Texas
I will take my audi to you guys working on
Decirte que acabo de conoceros y por lo que veo el trabajo bien hecho y por personas honradas siempre da buenos resultados, un saludo desde Valencia España.
Me thinks ...like most dealerships...removing engines is something they are not used too...servicing..ie fast turn over jobs, in my day stripping down engines was within our experience ..
Ohwell...great videos guys..👍
Damn I almost bought a S4 build in 2017, I really like those cars but I'm glad I saved money and after a year I could afford a 2017 C63S estate.
A lot of technicians at dealers don’t have a clue and don’t care they are scared people doing a job hit with sticks to do more work job sheet after job sheet you need passion pride and a love of cars to fix cars for people
Troubles is if the computer can’t fix it then you need a old time mechanic to fix the engine unfortunately there a dying breed nowadays!
Beautiful work with genuine and honest explanation. I just discovered your channel and I am subscribed 😊
To work on these cars you need knowledge and experience, I suspect dealers given the number of them and the number of technicians they need, employ people on a tickbox basis give them standard approved training and set them free having maybe one or two experienced people they share amongst dealer groups. If you add in a stressed service manager this sort of thing is bound to happen.
a tale as old as time: “we found metal in the oil pan that’ll be $30,000”
It probably was an apprentice that did the job. That said I am a Mercedes mechanic and we had the exact same thing. Someone went to MB because of a shaky engine. The dealer replaced the engine mount. Problem was gone for 5 days and it came back. Then the stealeship told him it is the turbo. His was a MB 124 6 cylinder diesel. He said go ahead and it did not change anything. The they said it is the injection pump and he said go ahead. Still same. After paying $7500 Canadian he said that is it. He found us and the car got towed to our shop with the parts on boxed also. They damaged some parts too. My boss and I looked at the engine and found no problem with the engine ( because MB was going to replace the engine next, so he said no) so I put everything back together, replace couple of items that was worn but did not cause this problem. Once all put together the last thing I did was unscrew the fuel filter . The fuel filter was completely plugged as you could see the dirt when you unscrewed it. Our bill was I think 3k and the owner said that the car has not run this good ever. What also happed my boss used to work at this dealership but opened his own. What he did he went with him to the dealership and told him what the cause of the problem was. They would no agree with the fuel filter as they do not need to be replaced. So he asked our customer to get his service book out of his car. When he came dark my boss showed the dealership that the fuel filter should be replaced every 46k km . He had 200k km. The dealership gave him half the money back and he was a full time customer with us. Good job guys
Excellent work and videos. Thank you.
Top job by a top Garage and a top man , at least you know what you are doing Glad to see you been busy ,keep up the great work !!!!
I WORKED FOR SEVERAL DEALERSHIPS AND THERE ARE SADLY ALOT OF DEALER TECHS THAT DON'T KNOW THEIR ASS FROM THEIR ELBOW LET ALONE HOW TO PROPERLY REPAIR A VEHICLE
Not only Audi /VAG , a friend had a Peugeot 308 with a gearbox problem, it worked although very notchy.
A Peugeot dealer
took the box apart , decided they couldn't repair it/ reassemble it and boxed it all up and put it in the boot of the car citing it needed to go to a gearbox specialist!
The guy had a running/working car and left with it on a transporter, totally useless garage..
Thought you had forgotten us the viewers. Great videos always. What has happened with the previous cars ?
😀 some left some are here
Shows you the skill level at Audi
Dealer should be named and shamed if they won't refund the owner for that BS bill.
Most Audis and more so the S and RS models all have some sort of common flaw. I’ve had quite a few and the only one I’ve had issues with is the one I bought with my heart instead of head. Car had not been serviced regularly and I dare say abused from new.
Currently I have an F87 M2 and my missus has had two F21 M135i over the last 7 years. Again people say BMW are unreliable. Simply treating the car well goes a long way. Changing oils, filters and fluids sooner than the set interval or not using LL service schedule helps.
I’ve had varying results with the two Audi dealerships in my area. One is less than impressive and one is fantastic.
There is probably not many dealerships with mechanics capable of stripping such a engine you guys know these engines inside out this is something you can't buy experience so it looks like some so called master tech at the dealer got in way over his head and basically said the engine is unservicble pleas persuade the owner to take it away great video as always i enjoy watching your channel
Yeah this .
The rocker arms are clearly a bit of a time bomb and a pretty expensive service item to resolve. I guess Audi, like other manufacturers, will not admit to a design change to resolve a design flaw, as they would be faced with additional claims. I wonder in the USA if customers would approach this with a law suit. In the UK we just suck it up though.
Very interesting to watch the pro's go at it.
You go to trading standars who can suspend the dealerships license to service vehicles. They will do a taped interview with staff involved
you ARE the best of the best. Let's keep it real. You KNOW your SHHHHHHHH and can sort out 99.99% of issues. Period
Audi should do recall on this rocker arms
Awesome videos, great work as usual.
Brother love what you are doing wish I could afford you lol respect.
about the battery... i've replaced the battery in my RS5 twice... once with the genuine Varta and once with an aftermarket... both were coded to the battery control module... both charge correctly... however the aftermarket battery has lasted significanty longer than the Varta... i understand the genuine batteries can be significantly older when installed due to low demand for them in NZ
Owning a German car in NZ is like living in the US with no health insurance.
Really is a top end garage this, there is definitely not many with your knowledge out there….
What a shame. I imagined the whole dealership shop scratching their heads like "He's supposed to just buy a new car - why must we fix this?"
Name and shame so that other people dont become victim to their lack of experience and professionalism
I've worked at dealers, independents and a specialist, no idea why people still insist taking they're cars to dealerships....
The big problem here is main dealer technicians vs independant mechanics.
This problem doesn't just apply to Audi, I've had the same with BMW where my knowledge of vehicles gained in the '60s and '70s servicing my own cars exceeds the knowledge of main dealer technicians.
You should open up an Audi dealership and show youtube and those other “dealerships” how it’s really done
The dealers have the tools, but the untrained monkeys don’t know what and how to use. Not having any pride on your work and not caring is just the result you see here.
And then you need the guys like you to make it right, guys that are proud to do your work right! Huge respect to your work!
Many young guys today, dont do anything with their hands and learning common knowledge on how to think when working with new stuff. They can only swipe up and down, left to right and that’s just it.
Oh yeah, only thing the battery code tells the bcm is the battery is new. There is no data communication from the battery.
No dealers often cheap out on buying tools they never expect to use and that’s part of why they always just try to sell a new engine., If they have the tools there is no excuse as the dealer for sure has all the documentation necessary for any mechanic with some experience and training to do a better job than these idiots did
@@jabberwockytdi8901 When I was working in a main dealer you were never given the option to "cheap out" the special tools were automatically sent to the dealer and billed to them and every year the tools were checked in an audit to make sure that they were all accessible to the technicians. That engine had all the hallmarks of somebody pulling it apart who didn't really know what they were doing.
My sons car is in for a motor swap due to this issue. Audi saw a tune and refused to do anything with it. Right now engineering and quality are becoming worse. Even porsche is dealing with catastrophic failures with IMS bearings and bore scoring. Vw and the $700 water pump, thermostat and belt.. so much crap that could have been avoided by sticking with known working parts.
I took my new at the 1.8T A3 to my local dealer and they had the car for a week changeing bits and in the end it was a split diaphragm on the diverter valve. The same dealership messed up the gearbox service on my B8 RS5 which after 30 miles started showing gearbox failures on the dash and fault codes it took months on both occasions to get a resolution and a trip to court for them to admit liability.
Well done 👍
Am I the only one who shakes when it warms up to 60 degrees? There are no misfires, the angle ranges from -3 to +6. Downpipe with cat. S4 b9 2019
Interesting case especially if the car was covered by a Audi/VAG Extended warranty. Could it be that the dealership found the car had a remap or some other none standard parts fitted and informed the customer that the warranty was void?
No Remap here 🤷♂️
Little bit is more than enough to do the damage
12:00 how my car sounded like when it finally ran out of oil (2 seconds it ran like that , I cut the engine and costed into a parking spot) one of the pipes had split that goes into the oil filter and due to technical fault the oil pressure sensor wasn’t functioning (it was plugged in backwards by someone who wasn’t me) still worked afterwards once the 2 issues was fixed 9 months later got rear ended (350k miles on that car Skoda Octavia 1.9 pd engine)
Good work man !
They probably replaced the good existing cam phaser with a faulty one for another car, it looks dusty
Great work 🇦🇺
Locking pin still in it..... Thats funnt as shyt!! Oh, and replace ALL those rockers!!
The S4 B9 nightmare from Audi is a great example it only takes one technician to make the shop look bad, it'll probably a novice a level technician just moved up to engine repair that made the inaccurate Diagnostics. But still Audi should take the fall for it because they have Master technicians that should have double or possibly triple checked the issue with the s4. A lot of money for the customer and a lot of shop credit on the line with a Diagnostics result like your engine is fucked. Really hard to find a good technician anymore
Nice Work!
For the carbon cleaning does the engine have to be removed from the vehicle? love the content!!
When You say "yhm Damaged" customer get hart attack 😂
Mechanics drive Japanese cars. They know where the true quality is.
Audi cars good motors, but that said, their mechanics can be crap and think they know it all. Great to see an Engineer putting Audi down (which they won't like) but when we we what this Engineer explained to us in fine detail what problems there was and the damaged Audi did to a customer's car, one's eyes do get open a little. Great video and many thanks.
i would say it wouldnt have been the tech who decided what happens to the car, they would have been told what issues the car had and to diag it, i think they striped it and found some metal in the oil and for a lot of dealers thats enough evidance to charge the customer crazy money for a engine rebuild. Most dealers will not take the risk of fixing the car without a rebuild incase of other issues that may arise.
See this when i was at a merc dealer, most times the techs would advise on the next steps then the descion is made by people higher up, shame though makes brands look bad doing this type of stuff
What's causing these problems? Not letting it warm up? Bad oil? Cheap parts?
I wish I could ship my car from the US to have the timing chain and rocker arms changed out.
