  • Hi Everyone!
Enjoy another simple and delicious plantation recipe with mom! If you're from Hawaii, you know that spam is quite a delicacy here on the islands. Growing up, my grandparents would make a delicious pineapple sauce to pour over their ham and/or their spam making it taste extra sweet and special. Enjoy this homey and simple recipe!

    1 can crushed pineapple
    4 T. brown sugar
    2 T. mustard
    dash of cloves
    Coleslaw:
    1 C. mayo
3/4 head cabbage (the sauce would probably cover a whole head of cabbage)
    1 carrot (grated)
    juice of 1 lemon
    1/4 tsp. pepper
    1 tsp. salt
    Ahi Belly:
    1 C. cornstarch

One favorite way we make spam is to make sandwiches. We mash up the spam in a bowl. Then we add mayonnaise, pickled relish, pepper and a tiny bit of salt. It makes delicious sandwiches.

Growing up we didn’t have the non stick pans, so my mom fried the spam in oil, but it was delicious and we would have it with the original campbells chicken noodle soup with rice and side of kim chee, that was an ono dinner. Lots of families did that spam, chicken noodle soup and rice. And it wasn’t to save money it was cause we wanted to eat that. I also loved spam with water rice Koreans put water in their rice almost like ochazuke. Side order of kim chee, daikon or whatever you wanted. Oh and let’s not forget the ketchup love spam doused with ketchup. I saw the black pepper can that I grew up with nowadays I just buy the big bottle from Costco or sams.
I loved the interaction with your mom and Reed about the corn starch so natural not even scripted, your mom a natural comedian with her soft voice and her look of disapproval classic, thats a reality show for you unscripted.
Loved this video please make more, thank you, oh was nice seeing grandma, who did her hair so nicely.
My mom and all my friends mom use to go beauty shop once a week wash hair, style and they slept with it for the whole week and the style stayed. Your mom is to young to have done that, but looking at your grandmas hair seems it was just styled and ready to go party.
    Thumbs up

Come to think of it, Pineapple is a classic Hawaii flavor that enhances a lot of different dishes. Growing up in Hilo, my Mom is a transplant from Japan so she tried very hard to incorporate all her traditions with the Hawaii ones and what came out was just simple "Ono" food. Will definitely try that Ham and Spam recipe later. Great video. Love the local cuisine!!! Aloha!!!
Something off subject, I just made your Grandpa's recipe for Banana Bread and it is really good!!! My Dad had his own recipe and for years we were making it and enjoying his recipe. And now we have your Grandpa's recipe and will enjoy this too!!! Very unique to add pineapple to the recipe but don't doubt it, this recipe is very delicious too!!! Thank you again!!!

Thanks for sharing the videos, reminds me of my parents home cooking. They taught us how to cook a lot of different things, American, Mexican, Japanese and a couple of Chinese dishes. Both of my parents have passed a long time ago.

I can always relate to your videos. Going to potlucks when we were young the family always asked for my moms pineapple luncheon meat. Not everyone is a fan of luncheon meat but it’s so good. The preparation is almost the same. And we also prepare our coleslaw the same too with just a splash of vinegar. Food looks good!
