My wife and I bought an L-Certified 2023 GX460 Premium in late July. Short version: we love it. To fund it, we sold a 2021 4runner Off Road Premium--- which we also really liked. We are decreasing our offroading and have done most of what we wanted in the 4runner. Fyi, I was wanting a 2024 GX550 Overtrail. But at the time up here in the Denver area there were waiting lists for the GX550--- such as over 200. Dealers were telling us it might be 6 months or more; hence, we went with the GX460. As a side note the highway mpg is rated at 19. With just me driving at 68 mph, I routinely get 23 - 24 mpg!
Ideally, buy the GX550, while keeping the GX460 until you're sure. The old systems approach was run both in parallel. After a given amount of time, keep the one you decide is best for you and sell the other one. I suspect leasing is an option for somebody who can deduct the lease costs income-tax-wise, but vehicles bought-outright can also be depreciated and there may be other deductible methods depending on one's tax laws. David, you'll have the advantage of better info and having test driven the GX550 more than what I'd be able to do at today's dealership which may only get one in at a time.

The Lexus motto used to be " The Relentless Pursuit of Perfection", sadly I do not see that in it's new vehicles today.

Today there is only one in stock, a 2019 GX460.

Car Care Nut's recent video on head gasket issues on the 1UR-FE V8 was a surprise to me - in light of the weakness discussed there, do you have any concerns with the outgoing V8's longevity?
I watched AMDs video multiple times and was left somewhat confused due to his previous videos stating the amazing reliability and build quality of the gx460. I think the vehicle in question LC200 with.200k had not been optimally maintained with out coolant replacement thus the head gasket issue. The GX 460 is an amazingly reliable well built SUV old school Lexus. The takeaway is simple...proper service. Do a coolant drain and fill every 30K. I own two GX 460s along with a 1996 LX450 and have no plans to let them go anytime soon. I feel the build quality and butter smooth V8 in the GX 460 is amazing. Lexus spent years fine tuning this model and again I feel it has that old school Lexus quality. I have test driven the 550 and yes it is very nice but more expensive and more importantly far more complicated regarding long term service. I'll take a naturally aspirated under stressed 1UR FE V8 any day over the questionable new twin turbo V6.
The GX’s don’t hold their value well, hence why a lot of people(including me) buy them used over a similar year and mile 4Runner. You start out 20k more expensive new and end up cheaper used.
If the 1ur was just a bit more powerful it would be a no brainer suv considering the ideal size and the quality of older lexus/toyota models. The v8 is smooth but the mpg is so poor and the range is therefore limited, but it is too nice of a truck not to drive on long trips and too nice to really take off road.
This. I owned a 460, but the 1UR just is t that strong. Moved to an LX570 and it is just so much stronger and gets nearly the same mpg while being a way beefier truck all around. Would never go back to a GX460
That was a great video, but it is a bit of fear mongering. The culprit appears to be people doing their coolant change every 10 years. Meanwhile, there've been numerous of these V8s hitting 500k mi, and some of those 5.7L hitting 1M miles. @@asplmnknowing Toyota, probably insanely expensive. Even the 5.7’s are pretty pricey to replace. Problem with Toyota’s are, if they are not reliable outside of warranty, you’re gunna go broke fixing them. They wanted $10000 to replace the nav system on my GX460. $10000!

About the GX550, I'm not sure, but I assume it's the same as the Prado. It Actually, it's a bit complicated, and Toyota is the one who made it that way.
@@mohammeds5458 the GX550 isn’t a Prado. It most certainly has KDSS on the rear axle.
Plenty of videos reviewing the GX550 overtrail will show you this.
@@Jay-me7gw
The gx550 is not a prado? Aha. Anyway, fk toyota making everything complected, just watched a video explaining which one has the ekdss.
Gx500 has ekdss front and rear with rear diff or rear and centre diffs with 3.5T V6 or 2.4T 4 cylinders
Prado has an SDM in front and ekdss in rear with rear diff or rear and centre diffs with 2.4T 4 cylinders or 2.8T 4 cylinders diesel
Land cruiser has an ekdss front and rear with rear and centre diffs or front, rear and centre diffs with 3.5T V6 or 3.3T diesel V6
@@mohammeds5458 well, it’s not. Different motor, different transmission, different KDSS, different body, etc etc etc.
They messed up by not offering that cushy ride like the older GX. The new LC is a rough ride too. I expect the new 4R will be rough riding, unlike the outgoing. Toyota has messed up a good thing.
Keep the V8 and reassess in a year
When people complain about cars not having physical buttons for the HVAC system they remind me when people wanted physical keyboards on smartphones. It's going away folks we will get used to it. Lol
😂 well said
No
David, paint thickness and panel gaps are not comprehensive definitions of ‘quality’. Understand the desire to make the comparison, but only years of operation will tell the true story.
We need of road test thank you
Keep the 8, I'm getting really sick of these automakers "deciding" that us peasants don't need the choice. How shameful
I am not sure it is the auto manufacture as much as it is the government.
Why on earth should you sell a 2023 vehicule to buy a 2024, except you desperately want to loose money?
David is a content creator. This channel is part of his income.
Does the new landcruiser have paddle shifters? 🤔
LOL! GX 460 alllll day.
Used 2022 GX with ~30k miles can be bought in the upper $40k range. Save the $30k-$50k, get a nicer interior & more proven powertrain with the GX460!
Keep de old one David! you already have the new land cruiser...would not make sense to have a land cruiser and a gx550 that look mostly the same. old gx is special..
I give it at least two more years to give Toyota/lexus to get the kinks out the engine, then you will see the 23 model GX on used car lots because they were traded in for 550
GX 550🏁🏁🏁
By ALL MEANS - keep the V8!!!!!!!!!!!
You buy new vehicles all the time, order the new GX Over Trail it will be good for your channel. Take care.
GX550 is way better looking, but it has a boring engine compared to GX460.
550
If you wont to sell 2023 GX... You will have a buyer
BE careful people. The KDS lean on the previous Gen is on a lot of models and I swear this is as annoying having your eyelash fall into your eye!
No lean on mine , even if did not a problem
He doesn’t keep any of his cars, why does he even ask us anymore?
225 miles range on highway is insanely bad!
No point getting 2024, mpg is dismal. keep the tried and tested gx 460. Since you can afford both , keep and buy new one then tell us in one year with another review.
I've heard so many complaints about the interior quality of the new GX. Lexus knocked it out of the park with the exterior design but increased the plastic used in the interior. How do you feel about the interior differences?
For what you get with the new GX for the price, I imagine they had to cut costs somehow. The prices didn’t go up THAT much.
No keep the NA V6.
Hi David. Are you Korean?
He's Japanese
Looks of 2024 and the engine of 2023...
Yep, Exterior of 550, everything else 460.
Skip both and get 4RUNNER. 1GR-FE will last more than UR engine and the V35A junk for new buyers, for the existing, GX460 all day. PERIOD.
I will never buy turbo engines
Great. More for the rest of us.
We are doomed, all cars will have turbos soon. Keep your non turbo cars forever.
No, you shouldn’t
If you don’t have your GX 460 now I advise you buy one used. They will never make anything like that again that will last 20 plus years. No way the new GX will last that long.
I would sell GX and buy a Rivian , you already have a LC - gx550 is worse looking and worse around town , LC and Rivian is all you will need.
Rivian like most ev’s is not attractive although it is better than most . On long trips my GX is smooth and parking is amazing in small spots .
@@jd2plus2 I had a gx460 and now own rivian ; gx460 ride like boat, body rolls like crazy - not in same league if you believe in range anxiety myth then maybe it is no go but in his situation I wouldn’t own LC and Gx together - very redundant and LC is the better vehicle all day long - 15 years newer and 20mpg vs 10-12mpg city - which one will you daily or even road trip ?
@@daveybroAgree that the GX handles like a boat. I steeped up to an LX570 from my GX460, even on 35’s the LX handles way better. I imagine a Rivian is similar as I think they have a similar suspension setup
My overtrail plus handles fine in sport +mode. No problem driving in manhattan traffic ,find it easy to maneuver.
@@ronarmfield913 I’m talking about handling a mountain pass at 70mph with a 5500 lb trailer in tow. Not driving in city traffic
No!
23 is one of the ugliest suv outside and in. TBH
Never sell that V8.
460. The new one is a POS!
New GX looks cheap. The offroading look doesn't work with luxury SUVs.
* * The answer is obvious...YES...!!! The 2023 looks UGLY...... * *
