    Thanks for the great reviews. It’s nice to watch a review that is honest and tells me the good and the bad. A lot of reviews just give specs and don’t talk about the cons of the vehicles. I can get specs myself. I want to know how practical is this for my family and the value for the money, which your reviews do exactly that.

      Great to hear from you, Billy. Thanks for watching and writing. This is exactly what we endeavour to do on the channel... too many channels churning out too many specs!

    Very honest review. It was what I needed. With the third row open there is no space and I hate that. I checked Sienna too but that is out of my style, however with good space.

    Nice review! Those captain seats in the second row are a deal breaker for me, gotta have the bench seat.

    I took my parents to Toyota to see the Highlander for 2017 and they came away impressed. The new 3.5 V6 has good power and the Hybrid has pretty good mileage. The equipment list is long and there are lots of nice storage in lots of places. However I do note we were given a Limited Hybrid for a tester.
    The captain's seats in the 2nd row is a nice touch and are much more comfortable than the bench seat. Does the loss of the 8th seat bother us? Our family only consist of 6 members including the grandparents! They also live by themselves (with a nice Mercedes to get about themselves) so as a 4 person family vehicle it is highly ample in ability, comfort and storage. Combined with solid reliability (the Pilot's problematic 9spd auto hampers this) you almost can't lose.
    The only thing I'm not sure about is the headlights. Toyota has made LED beams standard on the plebeian Corolla and optional on the Rav4 & Camry...but it is missing even on the $50k+ Highlander Limited. I don't want to know the thought process behind this omission.

    • @FamilyWheels
      @FamilyWheels  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Always good to have you chime in. Yes, the captain's seats will work for some families just fine. But it will give the buyer less flexibility, that's for sure.

    I've watched most of your reviews and I bought my F150 based on some of the features you mentionned in your video. However, I dislike the fact that everytime you mention the family dog, the dog is always loose and never restrained. Having an unrestrained ( harness or kennel) dog in a vehicule is the equivalent of having a baby not in a baby seat. Maybe it's a little something you could add to your review? Like " a 22" x 28" x 38" crate would fit" or " there are anchor points in the cargo area where you can tie down the family dog". my 2 cents...Great reviews as always!

    the Limited Platinum does offer 2nd row bench, and have pretty much all the bells and whistle minus the hybrid engine. Well, not sure if it's available in Canada.

    I think Toyota dropped the ball on this refresh, I have test drove this along with the Pilot, Mazda, Explorer, Pathfinder and I drove home with 17 Sorento SXL with more options as well as better pricing. Great job on the review

    Thanks for your very thorough and nicely done reviews! So even though the Pilot and CX9 are new redesigns compared to the Highlander this would be your choice? Why?

    • @FamilyWheels
      @FamilyWheels  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi TJ. Reliability, resale, towing capacity for our trailer, safety, and a nice middle ground in terms of size are all things that make it stand out. Which way are you leaning and why?

    • @tjsullivan4793
      @tjsullivan4793 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We are leaning towards the Pilot but not a fan of 9 speed transmission. Interesting to note I read where the redesigned Odyssey is receiving a Honda built 10 speed in upper trims I wonder if they may put this in the Pilot. The one review I read about this new 10 speed said it drove quite nicely unlike the ZF 9 speed.

    • @sgbradley
      @sgbradley 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      TJ Sullivan I'd go for the Pilot, my brother has a 2016 year & he loves everything except the push button transmission. Its awesome for Montreal highways and excellent for snow (he's a avid skier and snowboarder) especially up at Mont Tremblant. Great resale value as well in a Honda too.

    • @tjsullivan4793
      @tjsullivan4793 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Stephen. I am curious if your brother has the 6 speed or 9 speed? It is reassuring to hear that he is very satisfied with the Pilot. Thanks

    • @sgbradley
      @sgbradley 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      TJ Sullivan He has the 9 speed I'm pretty sure he has the top model cause he said he paid around $47,000 all together (Quebec taxes are high).

    Paul, now that you've driven this and the new CX9, which would you want to keep? I'm at a cross roads between the CX9 Signature and 2017 Highlander Limited.

    • @FamilyWheels
      @FamilyWheels  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      dingmah I would absolutely say the CX9 signature BUT for myself, we have a trailer so the town capacity is not good enough. The back seat is also roomier in the Toyota. If that's not a consideration, the CX9 impressed on many levels.

    Clock integrated in the infotainment system sux (they have it on the 2015+ Tacomas). When u turn the screen off u have no clock. If they had the clock displayed when the screen is off then it'll be fine but they dont.

    I don't understand how the Highlander can only have 9 inches of legroom with a forward facing childseat and the Honda Pilot has 11 inches when according to their posted specifications the Highlander has 44.2" front and 38.4" rear legroom= 82.6 total and the Pilot has 41.0 front and 38.4 rear = 79.4 total. So somehow the Highlander has 2 " less front legroom with a childseat even though it has over 3 inches more front legroom than a Pilot without a childseat. I'm confused.

    • @FamilyWheels
      @FamilyWheels  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The glovebox configuration often has a lot to do with how your legroom will be affected by a child seat. A big, bulky glovebox means the front seat has to slide back further to give you the leg room you need but the car seat doesn't make that possible so you're left pinned.

    I decided ti watch this review before my test drive appointment and I have to say that I am not impressed with the seating capabilities here. Given that I don't like bench seats (I prefer a 6 seat configuration), I'd have liked to see them make this vehicle a little longer and wider, and increase the headroom and legroom for the 3rd row.. Toyota needed to make this compete with the Ford Explorer which has great seating capabilities for those 3rd row seats as well as the Honda Pilot. The only reason I would get this over the Explorer is the reliability.

      Or you can get a sequoa (I don't if I spelled it right) is bigger than highlander and more romier a ship. But the cons to that is that one is v8 gas guzler and more expensive 10 to 15k more. It will dig your pocket; unless you can afford it then it won't be a problem.

    What a disappointment! I have a 2019 LE PLUS and it does: 6.8 seconds to 60 mph on a regular basis. Also has a dual fuel injection system. That will keep the back of your valves clean. Throttle body as well as direct injection. We have had three Honda CRV’s in a row, love them. We also still have our 2001 v6 AWD Highlander, which we bought new. 196,000 miles and runs fantastic. But when we bought the new Highlander, we did drive the new Honda Pilot. I just felt better in the Highlander, certainly handles better. There is just the wife and I so we are not worried that much about the third row comfort. We travel with those seats down for the extra storage we get. We are not worried about the Apple car play. Just an observation we thought we would pass along. Rob and Sue.

    Thanks for the review but I don't know what it is with Toyota but once you hit a V6 engine their gas MPG is terrible and Nissan also but Mazda CX5-9 get awesome MPG and Honda too. Nissan Rogue is an exception with pretty good MPG and its 4x4 is pretty good for a CVT transmission. My stepdaughter got the Subaru Crosstrek instead of the Outback or Forester (a younger looking car she said) could be worst, she was liking the Escape. Toyota is cutting corners on a SUV of $35,000 then its time to look elsewhere. Thanks for your honest thoughts.

      Stephen Bradley / my neighbor has a 2017 Mazda CX9, he mainly drives in the city, and gets about 13 to 14 mpg. I recommended the CX9 and the Highlander to him, now I regret recommending the CX9, he reminds me everyday about his poor gas mileage.

    i'm not a fan of that Darth Vader grill at all, and it seems to be costly to repair in a low speed bumping during parallel parking with careless drivers.

    Since Toyota is supposed to release an all new Camry in 2018, do you know if the new Highlander will be released at the same time, or will it trail by a year or so?
    Regarding the underwhelming gas mileage, I've loved Toyotas for their reliability and been buying them for over 30 years, but their gas mileage has always been unimpressive. I guess that's the price for being conservative with the technology to ensure maximum reliability.

    • @FamilyWheels
      @FamilyWheels  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Whenever I ask, Toyota never tells me about what's coming - perhaps as a means of avoiding a lull in sales as people hold off for the latest and greatest. But this generation has been around since 2013 so a total redesign isn't far off, I'd imagine.

    • @raidencraig
      @raidencraig 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A full redesign and move to the TNGA platform for Highlander is expected for 2020...the 2018 will have no key changes.
