2017 Toyota Highlander First Drive Review and Road Test - DETAILED in 4K UHD!

  • For 2017 Toyota has put the Highlander under the knife for a significant refresh. In addition to the new nose the Highlander gets a new V6 engine with more power, an eight-speed automatic that improves acceleration and fuel economy and a revised hybrid system. While some could ask for a bit more third row legroom or a larger cargo hold, the 2017 Highlander doubles down on all the things Highlander shoppers are looking for.

Alex I am big supporter of your channel and consider your reviews to be in a class of their own, setting new standards. I don't know if it's because I am personally interested in this particular model year of Highlander and was awaiting the 2017 review but I felt you speed- talked moreso than normally fast paced commentary and only slowed down to normal in the end when grading driving dynamics. I am a subscriber and support you but don't believe this is one of your better reviews, still gave you a "thumbs up" because this shouldn't break your streak.

In higher trims, this might as well be the bargain Lexus 7-8 seat SUV that isn't badged as a Lexus. The standard equipment list is long and you get the almost bulletproof 3.5 V6 and low running costs of Toyota vehicles in a nice family sized package.
As an example is my cousin's parents were thinking of something along the lines of a used Q5, GLK350 or even a used XC90 for their next purchase, but they liked the features and appointments of the Highlander Limited AWD that I showed them (getting them to 'move down' into a Toyota was the hard bit) which has 90% of their equipment list but still cost less even in brand new form. I think that says a lot.

Hey Alex, I've always thought that when you show the profile of the vehicles and compare the size to its competitors, it would be more clear if you had the front of the vehicle all the way to left of screen, which would be zero feet, then show the other vehicles lengths in the bottom of the screen like you currently do.

Thanks for your objective and factual reviews. Love them. You're actually the only one who measures cabin noise, which is a huge issue after the fact for car buyers, like myself. Having said that, you mentioned the acura mdx 2016 cabin noise measured 69db, and received and A-, and the highlander 2017 also received an A-, but i didn't noticed you mentioning a db measurement...do you have that number?

Once again, great video review of the 2017 Highlander. Always enjoy watching your video. As for the Highlander, the front grill looks a little ugly to me... I do like the fact that Toyota finally updated their V3.5 engine to add more ponies and updated the transmission to an 8 speeds. I am still on the fence about the Highlander.

After seeing one in person I like the new front end...so sue me...i also think the dimensions and lines on this manage to make it look sleek, especially compared with the chunky Pilot. On the downside, driver display seems outdated with no digital speedo readout option.

I just test drove a 2016 Highlander. Around town and on the highway I found it very sluggish. I'm not a fast driver, but there are times when you need to get up and go. At 55mph I had to mash the peddle to the floor to pass a car. I'm going to try a 2017 and see if it any better. In contrast, I drove a 2016 Lexus RX350. The acceleration was instant and dramatic in all situations.

    Hi Mr. Alex,
Your reviews are awesome, its giveing better clarity on the vehicles.
    I have few generic questions.
    1. When Navigation is on , do we able to listen to music or only one app at a time?
2.Regarding mileage, is this the top in 8 seater segment?
    3. From tailgate door, can I keep adult bicycle in the car (Not kids bicycle)?
    4. What all models with fully loaded features that we can get between $40k - $45k?
    Regards,
    Ramesh

Regarding the A/C and the Start & Stop system, I test drove the 2018 XLE model today. In the process, I discovered the Start & Stop system has a button to manually turn it off if you don't want to use it. Does anyone know if the 2017 also has this?

    • @RickTrajan
      @RickTrajan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

monzx3 yes they do, but you have to reset them every time you turn it off. It would shut the engine off only when it doesn't have load or when it can stay at operating temp. But for some reason non-hybrid vehicles have starter counter and manufacturer would recommend replacement when it reach a certain amount of usage - quite high count, maybe same lifetime with older vehicles still odd. I think it would stop operating start/stop function when the counter is reach and the counter needs to be reset too.

If you go with the Pilot dont choose the top end one with the ZF transmission, full of problems, lower trims its pretty much a wash and comes down to personal preferences when it comes to style and options.
On paper the Pilot seemed better but when I went to see and test them I went with the HL, just felt a lot better to me and my preferences.
