    Powering the Toyota Highlander mid-sized crossover vehicle is a 3.5L V6 with 295hp and an 8-speed automatic transmission.

    Toyota introduced the highlander in 01. I work at a metal scrap yard, we recycle hundreds of cars a day. In two years, I've not seen a single highlander come through. That's why I drive one, most reliable car on the market to date.

      I got into a wreck and my Highlander (03) still made it through after it ate through a Honda Civic … couldn’t find any used parts at any scrap yard near me so I had to order everything new …. This is so true just got a 2018 coming from a 2020 Camry and I’m in love !!

    I have a 2003 Toyota highlander and it's been the most comfortable and reliable vehicles I've ever owned. She's a f*cking gas guzzler but at over 250,000 km she's still running good with no problems. Would totally buy a second one.

    I have the older Highlander (2010) and I love it. It's just a great car for everything. It's roomy (fits 7 or 5 + lots of luggage), pretty good on the road (with 3.5L AWD) and can even tow a 19 foot boat. This one seems like even better car.

    Excellent review. Thanks. Your opinion on this vehicle is the same as mine. I would HIGHLY recommend it, however I would lean toward a used Lexus GX and never look back. A used GX is an SUV that you will want to own for a longer period - and you wouldn't want to replace it every 3 years (keep it for 5-7 without wanting to change it.).

    I subscribed today because I respect the way you don't confuse your personal preferences with what is good or bad about a car. You understand that different drivers (like women who prefer light steering) wouldn't like a vehicle set up with tons of steering feedback.

      you must be joking steve, motormoth is notorious for bashing cars just because he doesn't like them. you must be new here LOL. When you are not an independent reviewer you will always suck ass, when a company flies you out to Greece to review cars, you will surely talk nice about them so that you can have another mini vacation next year!!! lets be honest, independent car reviewers do a better job giving us faults and true pros and cons, this guy is not it.

      For sure. The heated/cooled seats alone are worth it. We love our 2016 Limited. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool car guy, but the Highlander is the perfect vehicle to have for day to day duties. It is damn near faultless. I don't want my family car to be sporty. I want comfort, efficiency and reliability. Sportiness is best left to the other vehicles int he garage.

    There is another benefit to those being plastic covers for steel wheels: steel wheels tend to be stiffer and less prone to damage from potholes, which could be a great thing considering the state of roads in Canada and the northern states.

    I always love your reviews. Based in canada like me and concise and practical. My question if you see this comment? Do you notice that many of the newer vehicles are all designed streamlined and severely sloping in the front windshield and cut off visibility up above example if u were looking up at a traffic light. So I own a Venza and did not check that out and found out after owning it I have to either lower the seat way waaaay down to the bottom to see traffic lights or I can keep the seat in a upright comfortable seating position and have to duck my head at every traffic light. I have gone to look at new vehicles and yes I am 6'1" a bit tall but its not even close cannot see out of the highlander, tried the Nissan Murano etc etc and cant see. I want to be up high in a SUV and with a nice chair like position so I just don't get it.

      I have the Highlander now but did own an Outlander GT and really liked it. Other than too many "beeps", it rode smooth, was decent on gas, would pull 3500 lbs and had the "birds eye" view for parking and paddle shifters making it very safe in the winter. It also had the best AWD system I've ever seen. Just could not spin it out on snow.. I actually miss it quite a bit even though I really like the Highlander.

    Hello there. Awesome video. My wife's work vehicle has been a 2014 Toyota since new and has ran like a champ since new. Has over 250,000 kms with only regular maintenance and brake jobs. Great looks and roomy interior. Lots of get up and go power with AWD security. As for the late model hybrids how is the mileage compared to the fairly thirsty standard V-6? Anyone? Thank you.

    Just bought a 2018 Highlander Hybrid Limited and for all intent and purpose this is a supersized Prius. I own a 2007 Prius so it was a no brainer for me. The true advantage of owning a Hybrid version is the upkeep...... it’s next to zero people all you Hybrid owners out there know what I am talking about and people open to change jump on this. Yes the tailgate is slow yes the third row is cramped yes the infotainment is dated but you just can’t beat Toyota reliability and low maintenance costs....

    Where did the "convenience package" go? I don't see it on the Toyota website for building this vehicle on the LE trim. It says, "no packages available." I want LE because I do not want leather and I don't give a hoot for sunroofs. But I get trapped in a trim with no packages. Not fair!

  • @dingmah
    @dingmah 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    Zack, the Highlanders don’t have LED headlamps on any trim level. Every trim gets regular old halogen headlamps. The LED tube lamps that’s referenced to in the specs list is actually the LED daytime running light strip.
    Also, the plastic cap that goes over the wheel cannot be replaced if you damage it. You have to buy a whole new wheel. Manufacturers use this plastic cap because they don’t have to worry about the chrome tarnishing over time. Super easy to maintain.

    • @lpslashgt
      @lpslashgt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @dingmah. Are you in Canada? Maybe it is just the Canadian version that gets the LED headlamps... Even the RAV4 Limited has LED headlamps in Canada. On Toyota.ca compare models it shows LED tube headlamps for XLE and Limited trims. I think the difference is that on the Highlander they are LED TUBE headlamps, but on the RAV4 they are LED headlights.
      www.toyota.ca/toyota/en/build-price/highlander

    • @dingmah
      @dingmah 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Someone in the marketing department definitely screwed up, because the 2018 Highlander XLE & Limited does not come with LED low beam headlamps. The brochure lists "LED Tube Headlamps" as standard on XLE & Limited, when it should probably say "LED Tube IN Headlamps" to refer to the LED daytime running lights trip IN the headlamps. Directly underneath that line is "Projector Style Halogen Headlamps" listed as standard across the entire lineup. s3.amazonaws.com/toyota.site.toyota-v5/tci-prod/toyota/media/pages/catalogue/highlander/2018/brochures/18-highlander-brochure-en.pdf?ck=01132018050841
      You can even see in this Edmonton dealership video for the 2018 Limited Highlander where it clearly shows the it doesn't have LED low beam headlamps. th-cam.com/video/9r9_sGzWT30/w-d-xo.htmlm45s
      2017 was the major refresh for the Highlander, and Toyota didn't refresh it with LED low beam headlamps. 2018 is just minor changes. Why they didn't include LED headlamps as part of the 2017 refresh is gonna be one of those stupid "Really Toyota?" oddities, even though they have LED headlamps on the Rav4 & Venza.
      As Zack has mentioned in his livestream Q&As before, the average age of a new car buyer is 45+. So the average Toyota Highlander buyer is most likely around that age too, and shortlist the Highlander because of Toyota's reliability, and as Zack mentioned, does everything just right. Now I'm nowhere near 45 at all, but bought it because I was tired of dealing with expensive BMW maintenance costs and electrical gremlins. With this Highlander, I get a lot of comments from the older crowd at gas pumps and car washes all the time.
      Lastly, I'm an active member on the Toyotanation.com Highlander forums. If the 2018 Highlanders came with LED headlamps, there would be a many threads on how to retrofit the LED lamps onto the 2017 Highlanders.

    • @lpslashgt
      @lpslashgt 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the correction:) It must be a marketing screw up then. I just traded in a 2015 NX200T F Sport on a 2018 Rav4 Limited which has LED low beams and high beams which is why I figured they would at least have them on the more expensive Highlander if they would have them on the Rav4. That must be why on Toyota.ca they list the Rav4 XLE and Limited as LED headlamp and LED daytime running light, whereas on the Highlander it is listed as LED tube lamp... I just noticed the projector style halogen headlamps are checked off for the XLE and Limited Highlanders as well as LED tube lamp being checked off, BUT on the Rav4 projector style halogen headlamps are not checked off...Kind of misleading IMO.

    sadly you cannot replace those plastic on top of those wheels!!! If that had been the case it would have been fantastic! and really should have been the case. My biggest complaint about this car (being an owner of a limited platinum)
    Alas the "Chromtec" premium wheels have a plastic chrome layer bonded to regular good alloy wheels and is very difficult and not recommended to be removed as it will not end well.

  • @beautifulmicia
    @beautifulmicia 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Something that would be appreciated is why the MPG never reaches that professed by the manufacturer. My vehicle is a Toyota Hylander XLE Hybrid. Even in ECO mode and staying within that range, my best MPG has been under 22 when the sticker states 29. That is a 7 MPG difference following strict usage. That is close to what a non hybrid Highlander is suppose to get driving normally. Why does the government allow them to obviously and intentionally LIE!

    I have a ‘15 XLE 🇨🇦 spec. It’s true it doesn’t handle like an Audi Q7 but other vehicles in the segment are much too expensive (MDX, Q7, XC90) or the have their own host of issues. With the HL, you put your $ in and take your $ out. It’s the bank of Toyota as Zack has stated so accurately in the past. Biggest gripes on this vehicle are the little teeny tiny radio knobs, the muted driving dynamics, slow AF power tailgate, and the dim-witted headlights. LEDs are standard on the Corolla! WTF @ToyotaCanada ?! Toyota has always sucked in this department and it’s time to start making this part of the TSS package! All that said...yes I would buy another Highlander. In a second. They really do so many things well. The resale is the icing on the cake.

      Mike Marin Kia Sorento is a decent choice. However, the Toyota will be much more reliable than the Kia and will have fewer break downs as it ages. It's not uncommon to see Highlanders with 300,000 + miles original engine and transmission still running along. A Korean car on the other hand tends to fall apart after say 100,000 miles or so

Most SUV require the 2nd row seat to "fold" to gain acess the 3rd row. If you have a toddler seat in the 2nd row it prohibits gaining access to the 3rd row. Your help is appreciated.

    Interestingly my parents who are looking at 3 row SUV hated the Highlander. They complained the 2nd row in particular with the split seats have very little in the way of seat height; your thighs just kind of dangle in mid-air. Other 3 row SUV has deeper footwells or higher seats which allows your thighs to rest on the seat itself. The bench seats were higher but still highly uncomfortable for such a large vehicle. That was the deal breaker for us, sadly.

    "OMG $35K for the cheapest family SUV, car prices are getting ridiculous!"
    You know what, I agree. But if you need a car with 7 seats, and you can't afford $35k, what you need is a fucking condom. If you can't afford $35k for an SUV, you certainly can't afford college, extracurriculars, and healthy meals for 4+ children, and having a large family in those circumstances is the height of selfishness. Maybe it's a good thing that family cars are so expensive and depreciate so little now, it's yet another deterrent from having a family for people who can't afford it. If you could still get a 3-row wagon for $15k new or a few thousand used, the upfront costs would be doable, but those children won't have a good future, and the fact that the parents can squeeze them into the budget *now* makes the long term reality of the financial situation much less apparent. Maybe we should use the tax money from $50k childbirths, $50k SUVs, and $2k+/month college town rents, all of which are blessings in disguise, to pay for free condoms and birth control in every bathroom, male and female, with the costs of all of those necessities displayed prominently on the front of the machines to encourage people to use them.

    Zach, I'm surprised that when you mentioned the Highlander's competition, you didn't mention the Mazda CX9 - far better interior design, better handling, and more fuel efficient. How would you compare the two?

    • @tekz6435
      @tekz6435 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree...Zach had a review of CX9 in 2016 and mentioned it is top of the class...CX9 is really good but yes the Mazda dealers could be better however you buy vehicles for its merits and your needs as a driver not because of dealerships. You can deal with the best dealerships but if their cars are crap then you drive a crappy vehicle. Remember that you only deal with the dealers/svc dept once or twice a year for maintenance assuming its a reliable car but if its crap then you're there multiple times a yr

    I lease a 2017 Highlander and to be honest I’m not overly excited about this vehicle. The infotainment system is out dated and needs updating. The climate controls are to small for your fingers to turn. MPG is not what Toyota claims you’ll get either. I get the equivalent mpg on my 2017 Ford Escape. When this lease is up I’ll be looking around at other vehicles.

      1. Worse Nissan CVT issues
      2. Poor VW reliability
      3. Poor reliability also
      4. Good utility and resale value but 9-spd trans problematic
      5. Best all rounder and resale value but doesn't stand out on any aspect
      I would also suggest adding the Mazda CX9 on the list and possibly ranked #1 due to best look and driving dynamics in its class
