Proud to be an owner of the unicorn. 718 Spyder, Gentian blue, Aurum wheels, Manual transmission, Bucket seats. This car is special and glad to see someone recognizing that fact.
He’s right. “Spyder is the perfect sports car”. I got my Spyder a few weeks ago, and it’s insanely great. This car handles like no other car. And OMG, it’s so beautiful. Automotive art.
In the last two years, I can’t tell you how many Spyder reviews I’ve watched. I love your take on the Spyder v 911 perspective. This car is superior on many levels. The 911 is a great car, but it has grown far too large. I can’t tell you how many 911 owners agree with your comments. This is the pure drivers car. I’m in San Diego. I see 911s every single day. I’ve only seen 1 Spyder on the road in my entire life. Very exclusive. That along with the looks and price sold me. Picking my up in November.
I kept bouncing back and forth between this, a Carerra S, and a GT4. In the end the fact the spyder has those beautiful humps behind the seats and the overall design caused me to go that route. (The fact that only 8 people were ahead of me vs 16 for a GT4 didn't hurt either). We will see how long it takes to reach the front of the line now.
I used to want a 911 (would still be happy to), but as you've mentioned they have become a little more of a GT car rather than a raw sports car. The 718 Spyder/GT4 are not as fast as a 911, but as a driver, it's not about outright speed, it's about the emotions and experience of getting in the car and becoming a part of it.
I appreciate your mature and more relevant review. Most reviews fault this car’s gear ratio as, some called it, a “fatal flaw.” But anyone interested in getting this car should think about the fact that they are car reviewers and they will wring out the engine to its full tilt before every gear shift. No one who buys this car will abuse it like that. The sweet spot power band in this is 4500 - 6500 RPM when driving on canyon roads and gear ratio was never even an issue to me. Out here in Southern California, this car proves to offer the perfect balance, not only in its weight distribution but also between its chassis and the power. This is a car you can really work with and it will reward you in ways that old analog sports cars used to do. I wouldn’t recommend it as a vanity car. But if you are a driving enthusiast, there isn’t much out there that is better than this car. To me, this car sits perfectly at the balancing point between the first generation Miata and the McLaren 750.
Great review, no nonsense, subscribed. I have a 2.5T GTS and had a 4.0 GTS for a while as a loan car while mine had warranty work. Definitely an improvement and can only imagine what the spyder/ GT4 would be like!

Anyone who understands physics and race cars knows the mid engined design is hands down better than rear engined. It is simply safer and easier to drive the Spyder fast than the 911, and turn in is better, as well as using the throttle to steer in corners. Really no question to me the Spyder is a better sports car.
Better is actually kinda depends on the perspective and purpose. Both are really good and fun to drive. But if you are looking for a 2 seater sports car, and you have other cars for fam, etc, then the 718 is arguably a better choice. But if you are looking for an only car that can do both daily and sporting, plus you have at leas 1 or 2 kids, then the 911 would be a better choice. 😏

@@Jayturbo_ENTJ If we want to get down to brass tacks, Porsche eliminated the word "Boxster"(it has an "S") from the 718 Spyder. Your guess is as good as mine as to why. It is a 718 Spyder...not a 718 Boxster Spyder. I think the reviewer in this video was careful to call it exactly that. Porsche should NOT be rewarded for this. Get the PDK and then you have a great car. But there’s something “wrong” about a Spyder with an automatic.
I own a 718 Spyder, and the gear ratio thing is overstated. I mean, maybe it would be better with slightly shorter ratios, but what you've got is a light, beautiful car, a 4 liter engine that revs to 8,000, manual transmission, monster brakes, and a GT department chassis. And were you really planning to buy a limited edition Porsche and then faithfully stick to the 65 mph speed limit? It's unquestionably the best Porsche outside of a GT3, and I couldn't be more thankful that they made it.
@@agroves72 I'm glad you like it. I had ordered one and backed out because I cannot support Porsche for making such a bad choice on the gear ratios. You say it revs to 8000 - OK, but what's the point if you can only access that in 1st? And, we all know that hitting the redline in 1st makes for a very jerky ride, since 1st gear has a lot of torque and is only suited to get you off the line. Anyway, to each their own, and I hope you find a car that you love.
@@agroves72 But that's the whole point! You seem to be missing that you SHOULD be able to hit redline in 2nd and even 3rd gear, on public roads, without speeding. Even on track, you need to be able to use the engine to its fullest, which means being in the ~4500-8000 range for most of the track. You cannot do that with the GT4/Spyder manual, which is a dealbreaker. Even for a GTS it's not acceptable. Different story with the PDK, of course.
There is a reason for this. Porsche did not do this "just because". There are drive by noise regulations.....you know....like the one where you cannot register a GT3 in California because of noise? So Porsche had to fit the gearing to the test profile. Do a little research and you will see. And the car does not have to be revved to redline every single time to enjoy it.
There only five reason the 718 is better than the 911, but I am sure you will find 10 reasons the 911 is better than the 718. And that’s why the 911 is more expensive.
Same will go if you compare a Ferrari or Lamborghini or any other brands with the 911. There will always be better and worst. At the end of the day, it’s whatever makes you happy and what you can afford!

That maybe true for the regular 718, but the Spyder is something very special!
Same will go if you compare a Ferrari or Lamborghini or any other brands with the 911. There will always be better and worst. At the end of the day, it’s whatever makes you happy and what you can afford!
@@tet2mor282 Yes... and there is just something quite special about the Spyder!
Sorry, but most 911 owners have more money than sense. Why else would you choose it? Name 5 reasons...
@@clu4u this is by far the best statement I’have ever read in TH-cam .. chapeau
