  • In this timelapse, sit with me as I walk you through my painting and rendering process for going through various different materials: Stone, jell-o, wood, gold, iron and rust, porcelain and candle wax. Then witness how to take materials studies you done and apply them to figures and different subjects without reference.
In the future we will have videos going over the nitty gritty physics for rendering, but if there were any materials that you wanted to see an approach to here, I've got you covered!

    ABOUT ME:
I began learning how to draw in February, 2019. I was inspired by Into the Spider-Verse and told myself, "I want to be able to make something like that one day". SO I decided to pick up a pencil and start learning.
I've spent every day since scouring the internet for the best tutorials and lessons to help teach me how to be an artist.
But I don't have all day - I want to figure this out! I've structured my practice and learning in a way that has gotten me to figure out the fundamentals in 2 years - and I hope to have even less until working professionally.
Because of this, I sought out to make myself a curriculum that would train me effectively.
I called it "The Curriculum for the Solo Artist". It got popular on Reddit: / from_the_guy_who_made_...
Proko even talked about it on the Drafstmen podcast (time-stamped)!

Since then, I've been working hard to improve. I take pride in learning, helping others, and pursuing creativity.
If you want to talk more with me, I'm on Discord all of the time.

I've been working through the transition from line art to colored art and this has been very informative, you covered a wide range of materials, drew with each, and gave insight the entire way through. great stuff.

Really useful tutorial, it's informative to see how textures can be put to use in characters.

what is the name of the brushes you use? I'm not sure how thats particularly spelt or seem to be able to find this brushset

I enjoy using the Art of Ayan brushset for Procreate, a Ghinbli brushpack, standard round, Mike Mcain and Wootha's packs.
I mostly default to a couple workhorses, and pull out specialty texture or shape brushes in specific scenarios.

When I try to paint textures it never really comes out like... well the texture I wanted to paint, it mostly looks like a flat colour with a few texture brushes over it. I get it where the lighting comes from it's lighter and the other shadow side is darker, reflected light etc. i get that, but when I try to apply all these things it still looks... ununified. You can recognise the thing but it never looks right, my textures just all look like dirt on the surface. I use the standard krita brushes but I should be able to create anything with that.

No. If that’s what you took from this, you didn’t learn anything.
