    In this series, I try to study new art styles and material rendering techniques. Sometimes a new trick or technique is revealed, sometimes we just learn how to reflect a little moonlight off of a warm armor plating. This episode we dig into the art style of Dark Souls and pick up a few tricks on lighting metals.
    Things I've worked on:
    Overwatch (PC, PS4)
    League of Legends (PC)
    Diablo 3 (PC,PS4)
    Hearthstone (Mobile, PC)
    Burning Crusade (PC)
    Wrath of the Lich King (PC)
    Indivisible
    Unsung Story
    Final Fight Streetwise (PS2)
    He Man (GBA)
    Terminator 3 (GBA)
    CannonBallers (Mobile)
    CreeD
    Twilight Monk
    Ikeda
    Nova Colony
    Galaxy's Edge
    SodaPopSoldier
    Millenium Actress

    I just recently started digital art yesterday. It all seems so complicated with all the different brush types,colors,layers,lighting types,dodge and on and on. Ive always done traditional only and i always hated doing anything with color because i cant remember the basics of how colors mix and have a very hard time remembering a lot of different techniques or my visual memory. Doing digital feels like drawing,sketching,painting,computer programming,photoediting,photography,mathematics,anatomy (plus 500 other skills).

    Better than copying other designers who may have gotten things wrong: get books on real armor etc. or go to museum websites that have the real armor on display and copy the real thing (but keep in mind that it looks more aged now than when it was new and in use). The benefit of this is also that you can use the study in your own work without any copyright issues.

    • @dyetaa
      @dyetaa 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because the lesson was about materials -_-,if you want color theory then this video isn't for you.Also mr smartass color picking is still a great way for studying if you pay attention to the color wheel.If you want to *understand* the color,color picking is a great way to do that.If you want to get a better eye at color than color picking isn't that great but since color is so relative and context dependant it can easily trick your eyes ,so picking colors from what you see is gonna quickly limit your growth

    i am very new to art. digital art, (not drawn since i left school just under 5 years ago) and i have been bingewatching your tutorial videos like this, several times repeating them, trying to soak it up.
    i want to tell you just how much i appreciate these videos, when drawing with my brand now tablet, i am starting to think so much more when trying to draw.
    aside from thanks, i would really like to see a warm-light, fantasy-theme illustration done. lots of your videos i have seen (so far) are very sci-fi illustrations/character which i really love the style of, but i would like to see how you would deal with the different lighting and line style that a brighter fantasy design calls for.
    lot of text here. Thank again Trent. looking forward to your next lesson.

    Hey Trent!
    I recently dropped out of college and got myself a full time job. These past months I've just been working to save up for some digital art equipment. I've always been into art and figured I should take my chances with it (considering the fact that I'm still super young, 20 yo)
    I plan to draw for 1 year and see where it takes me. I've been searching the internet for different equipments (both software and hardware) but there is so much to choose from!
    If you could compile a list of all the equipment needed for me in order to start practising and following your tutorials, that would be super helpful : )

    Hey Trent :) Those studies are really awesome but I have one Question : I have been told when I do studies I should avoid using the eyedropper tool to get a better understanding of the colors that are in my reference image. Now I have watched your Videos and you do use the eyedropper a lot so my Question is : What is the more beneficial for an artist ? Use the Eyedropper or trying to find the right colors yourself? I hope this makes any sense :D Anyway thank you for doing these videos :) Cheers

    • @Jhakaro
      @Jhakaro 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would say if you want to improve your understanding of colour and colour temperature, get a more discerning eye for being able to pick out values and colour, then don't use an eyedropper tool but if all you want is to be able to paint the material itself and you already have a good eye for colour, eyedropper is fine. Though you could also argue that if you have a good eye for colour, you could just quickly pick out the best colours yourself anyway and have them match pretty well.

    I come and go with art, two reasons for such, my career takes precedence (even though I'm not into it that much) and second, which is what I wanted to know from you (I've watched your stuff for a couple years) what I'm curious about from you is, can you get some of these amazing textures that are like this grimy dinged up and heavily used metal but in autodesk sketchbook. Since I can't spend too much time, I don't want to spend too much money, but I have sketchbook and I can't seem to get these beautiful textures that I typically see with other software. Could you make this particular texture on sketchbook? (As in, is it possible vice would you do this particular pic on sketchbook) also would you do a tutorial on how to do this on sketchbook or point me to a video you already did?
    Keep doing amazing art!
    Thank you!

      I think that it's a technique that you can use to do a study at any level. Pick something that you want to learn/study. Copy it, right next to it. Compare what you have to what you're studying and ask yourself "what do I see that am I not replicating?". At ANY level, if you do these kind of studies, you will grow.

    Pick up your color directly from a reference image is not a very good way to practice.You have to under stand why the material looks like this,and try to rebuild it by picking up color on your own.

    • @dyetaa
      @dyetaa 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And how on earth are you gonna understand the color if you use your eyes?If you pick colors from your reference and pay attention to the color wheel as it changes you will definetely understand color,you will see that the blue you see isn't really blue but a grey,if you use your eyes you re just gonna pick blue and then wonder why it looks like crap.

    • @dyetaa
      @dyetaa 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some couple people told you that or you find that from the internet and now you're being a smartass.Selecting colors from your reference is great for learning color theory.How are you gonna know that it is a desaturated brown over there if you don't have the knowledge and pick colors from your lack of it.Picking colors and paying attention to the color wheel is a great way to learn how colors work in different situations.Color is relative,it can trick your brain.
      Also,Trent is studying material in this video and the fact that he's also an experienced artist makes your comment dumb.I see no purpose for him to pick his own colors since he doesn't need to.

    • @TrentKaniuga
      @TrentKaniuga  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It doesn't matter how many layers you use. I sometimes reach 500+ layers if I've been working on a piece for a while. It all goes flat eventually! Don't obsess over "not making mistakes". Use as many layers as you need to get the job done and learn what you need to learn and produce good results.
