This is just the difference between optical color mixing VS physical color mixing. When the color particles or pigments are dry in the canvas giving the optical illusion of a new color by proximity is the same thing as if these particles mix in the wet medium, for example linseed oil; (or mixer brush in the case of digital). The first is Dry mixing, the second is wet mixing. What matters is that the edge control and value and temperature changes are on point.
The blending brush is not bad itself, but that a lot of intermediate artists abuse the blending tool and mix colors in their canvas instead of choosing a palette beforehand. Artists that are not aware of the importance of value, temperature and edges are the cause of muddy colors, not the brushes themselves.
The other issue is: a lot of digital painting programs make it hard to add the randomness of the physical canvas. And it is very hard to be aware of the difference between wet and dry brush strokes when one has never had the experience of oil or acrylic painting. So what we do digitally is to "mimic the effect" without the mental idea of why the effect happens in the first place: In traditional oil painting the artists starts with very wet paint and physical mixing and proceeds in later layers with thick dry paint and optical mixing because this helps oils dry faster and ensure that the painting will last longer. "dry over wet" Is the mantra of the oil painter!

That’s so cool! Honestly, I remember that as an Art baby I used to blend wayyy too much. It took me a long time to realise that it’s the different patches of unblended colours that really make something look so beautiful. Thank you for your videos, as always. It was a good reminder for me to also slow down and take my time with my art. The process of it is just so much fun ❤

Beautiful. Art is so fun. It’s us who’ve turned it into a competition and a way of getting ahead of others. We’ll learn a lot if just slow down, and enjoy it , play with it and then we’ll actually learn to appreciate the small and simple things. And how important they can be

Very interesting video! Love how the line work has this old school comic printed effect. But what fascinates me all the time is how people see color very differently. For example, when you said the red and blue dots look similar to the purple ones, they looked suuuper different to me. It is amazing how the same piece of art can be so unique to everyone!

Now you´re talking! You got right to the point. I love to use glazing in acrylic painting, watercolors and even colored pencils, and do expressive strokes of different colors, side by side. I used to blend everything so long , that it turned to muddy mess.
Now my style is evolving ( I hope for the better). I´m not yet an expert on this but it´s so great to hear you talk about this.
    It´s really important .

I should start using texture tools for my pieces so the characters feel more organic. I've been using a custom pencil tool on procreate so I can get that "as close to traditional" feeling and also get that "natural texture feels" because I'm lazy haha. Thank you Josh! (:

  • @valasafantastic1055

It’s also a style choice. There is such a case as ‘overusing’ or ‘misusing’ the blending tool. Such as messing up tone, transition or colour accidentaly where as when used correctly you don’t mess up these things.
Smoother more ‘digital’ styles are different but not necessarily better or worse. It’s just a different style.
Brushwork and texture heavy styles are wonderful yes but so are smoother more simlistic styles. The style is also effected by the time tthe artist wishes to take. An extremely detailed /textured style is a ridiculous idea for a hand drawn 2d animated project. Simlified can also read faster and work better for sequential art such as comics. A highly detailed and beautifuly rendered style can work against the point of the story and tone. Using a beautiful hyper textured/rendered style for a slapstick comedy wouldn’t work well (except for sudden panels/stills to create comedy).
What is the purpose of the art? How does it tell its story? What style of rendering best conveys the feelings?
Simplified art is also beautiful in its elegance and simplicity sometimes less is more.
Detailed textured art is also beautiful in its complexity. The artist conveys emotion in the use of texture and brushstrokes. ‘Oil paint’ style with hard and lost edges the abstracted textures that convey depth and realism while also being u feast if when zoomed in. Great for a painting or still illustration made for the sake of beauty. Or for a single still storytelling non comedic artwork such as a book cover, movie poster, or other story telling painting.
One is not better than the other its when and why.
I understand the click baity tittle but still a bit cringe…
Personally I love Pocreates blending engine but it’s more about how and when to use blending and when not as well as the style you are working with. Often for a more ‘oil painting’ or brushstroke/traditional style don’t blend much or at all. But for a more intentionally digital or simple less textured style (semi realism but not cell shading) blending tool is perfect.
