Texture brushes are insanely useful, but they should only be the first step in adding details...

That cube is looking really good, although I understand how light works on a basic level there are some subtle things on that cube like a slight brightness on the edges which really sell it.
But I’m not sure how to actually apply that in my own pieces

I know the artist painting here is a professional and has painted for hundreds of hours, but jeez... that looked so effortless, but I know if I try it will take a lot of time and practice to even do this simple exercise.
Grab the exercise sheet and try painting the textures in small steps, and don't forget to have fun with it. 🙂
Is there specific name for this kind of cartoonish style? I'd really like to see more tutorials on that style on everything from rocks to grass from bugs to monsters from faces to beyond.

In painting we use light and dark values to create an object, in this case we're designing a crack. If that crack didn't have a lighter edge, you would read it differently. From this perspective the light and dark sides aren't any different, they both have their own lighter and darker values that build up the shapes. The trick is that the values on the lit area are generally lighter. Hope this explains it. 🙂

What if you just apply 3D transformation to the texture?
you can, but you have to remember what you're representing. The texture in this instance represents local color value of the rock like a smudge or something that wouldn't change it's form, while what he shows changes the way the rock would feel. How does you're eye tell the difference, it can't really. First and foremost you will read changes in value as changes in form, but it uses context to realize what it's looking at. so generally a solid light area surrounded by a solid darker shade, doesn't make sense as form without rim or something, so it reads as texture or muddy values.

I just wanna know how to draw a realistic tennis ball digitally
Its been months, but I got you fam. Draw a light gray circle on one layer, draw the neon green on another layer. Erase where you would see the white lining to the tennis ball, look at reference to be sure. Shade on a different layer with opacity down to what you feel is comfortable and paint over with a cool colour like dark blue, or indigo. Then put a highlight where it looks reasonable, basically just the opposite direction of where your shadow is. Remember the ball is a sphere, not a circle, so the shading would curve to the shape of the ball. To get a fuzzy hairy shape quickly and simply enough to fit in a TH-cam comment, select the smudge tool and look for a brush with a lot of dots and start stroking outwards from the center of the sphere, not too much though. Reduce smudge strength if you can. If you do it right you should have a hair effect going on. Hope it helps you out.
