The Black Album is sort of like James' autobiography in many ways, and very relatable to other 70s and 80s kids who were repressed/sheltered for religious reasons. Usually that type of over-parenting backfires in very dramatic and sometimes fatal ways. The world got an angry young James Hetfield who happened to become one of the best guitarists in metal. One thing his mom did right was sign him up for those piano lessons!

Not to mention anger issues that he lashed out on Mustaine, which also was completely crazy when drunk, and Dave's dog too, on that one incident, back in the days. Love the documentary, though I have seen and read about the history a million times I always enjoy looking for photo’s, factoids and footage I hadn’t seen before.
I grew up listening and playing Metallica most of my 41 years so far, a very huge fan. I know there all getting up there in age and i just have to say it's going to be a very sad day when James, kirk or lars pass! It would then be the end for Metallica. I'm more of a fan of the older stuff of course, and I'm just so grateful that they created the music they did.. with cliff, Dave, and Jason! they'll never really die in my life.
Great ending: Nothing Else Matters but Music! In one of the interviews Jason actually named the real reason why he had to leave the band. It was all about priorities: music or family life. And Dave is still resentful about the way he got kicked out of the group. After so many years. Got it practically firsthand.
Check your facts. If you watch this interview, Jason did not leave because of priorities: music or family life. Jason left due to lack of appreciation from the band and management and when James did not accept him helping a start up band Echobrain on the side, that sealed his decision. th-cam.com/video/ynAFtQhPSKc/w-d-xo.html
It's easy to pick holes in this chopped up footage documentary, but this filled a few blanks for me and I learnt a more. Thank you for making the video. Metallica are awesome. I'm knocking 50 and I still love them, always have, always will.
i was 14 and into classic rock at the time, for whatever reason i found kill em all recommended to me on TH-cam. hearing hit the lights, i was hooked instantly. 6 years later and it's still my favourite album of all time, im so happy just by chance that i listened to that album as an introduction to metallica

So glad they got their groove back on with Trujillo... I think the band is as good now as ever it was. @Through the Never' is a full-on psychedelic Thrash horror experience... what a fucking cool gig, amazing show all stitched together. You stay healthy out there - Big love to the Metal Militia, hardcore brothers and sisters
As a fan of Metallica since 1985 and have to say I clicked on this halfheartedly thinking it would be rehashed information...i was wrong and learned a few things I did not know about the members. Awesome job!
My musical interests and endeavours in the 80’s as a teen were basically whatever t-shirts Hetfield was wearing. Misfits, Samhain, Death Angel, Faith No More and a number of others. He wore it, I sought it out.
I know Bob Rock said that he introduced D standard to Metallica, which is strange. The Thing That Should Not Be off of Master of Puppets from ’86 was recorded in D standard tuning.
@@fam.hunger5244 I don’t know about ”ridiculous”, since he seems to recall a specific exchange that prompted it. I’m sure he influenced the band in terms of tuning, etc. But the notion that they were previously unaware of alternate tunings is demonstrably inaccurate.
I think what Bob Rock says is either miss interpreted or he's not clear. I think he's specifically meaning to say "during the black album" he simply brought the idea up that they experiment with other tunings.
If it werent for Metallica, Slayer wouldnt have made it. K.K Heard Metallica & immididtely went back & revamped Slayer from ground up, all new material, Atleast Kerry was Influenced by Metallica back then.
I was listening to Ratt, Crue, Maiden, Judas Priest, etc and then I heard Am I Evil and my life changed. Once I heard that song it completely changed what I listened to, how I dressed, my entire life. I became a MetalHead instantly and still am today. What I didn't see coming back then was how big Metallica would eventually become, the first time I saw them was shortly after Cliff passed, there was probably 6k people for the Damage Inc tour. The next time they came on their own was in support of the Justice album an they sold out two shows in a NBA arena. Seattle 89, still my favorite concert ever because of how crazy the crowd was. The last time Metallica came to Seattle was in 2017 and they filled a NFL stadium, literally filled the place. It's unreal to me how big they've become, back in the mid 80's I felt like they were my own because hardly anyone was listening to them where I was. Now Enter Sandman is played in grocery stores and is used as the intro for the Tennessee football team. Maybe it's not Tennessee? Some big college football team plays Sandman as the team comes on the field, it's pretty cool. Metallica is like an old friend now, I love them. I'm glad they booted Dave cause I love what he's created too.
Dave Mustaine: “I was homeless. I was panhandling…” Narrator: “James and Lars took one look at Dave’s expensive equipment and gave him the job immediately.” 🤔
I was lucky enough to have seen Metallica as the second act to take the stage at "MONSTERS OF ROCK" Pontiac Silverdome Pontiac Michigan after the opening act Kingdom Come and proceeded by Dokken. When Metallica took stage lower bowl emptied to main floor. I will never forget that.
I caught that too. Where does a panhandling homeless guitar player keep all of his expensive equipment? Don't get me wrong, I love Dave, Megadeth, and Metallica. I would love to hear the music that was never created if Dave would have remained in the band.
Excellent documentary. I hate getting into who’s better blah blah, all I know is that Metallica helped shaped thrash metal and I’m just grateful for that. I’ve been a fan since I heard them the first time. Their music helped me get through some shit early on and even as an adult, their lyrics essentially portrayed how I felt but wasn’t sure how to express it in a safe way. Thanks Metallica.
Very interesting. Man, I don't keep up with this kind of music but, have at least heard songs here are there, definitely know the name of the band. The way Cliff passed almost made me cry. Talent is talent and I respect anyone who has it.
Great job and presentation! Thank you. It took decades to finally take the plunge. I'm just happy and satisfied knowing "Nothing Else Matters" and at least having in their repertoire that I could tolerate. Over two decades later, now happily exploring/repeat playing the first three and "Black" album. I just wish and imagining what would it be if Cliff still around when they collaborated with Bob Rock the first time. Black album would be a lot better, and more commercially successful.
They are Metallica and no matter how they sound they still sound like Metallica. There is more than one single too lin a toolbox. They use them all. That's how music works. And they do whatever the fuck they want. Because it's a metal thing to not stick to conventions and labels. Metal is more than just thrash.

@@firstnamelastname5899 Jason actually named plenty of reasons, but I do believe that the lack of appreciation was the main one.
It's easy to pick holes in this chopped up footage documentary, but this filled a few blanks for me and I learnt a more. Thank you for making the video. Metallica are awesome. I'm knocking 50 and I still love them, always have, always will.
Man this was very well done. You definitely earned my subscription.
Greatly appreciated!
i was 14 and into classic rock at the time, for whatever reason i found kill em all recommended to me on TH-cam. hearing hit the lights, i was hooked instantly. 6 years later and it's still my favourite album of all time, im so happy just by chance that i listened to that album as an introduction to metallica
31:04 ah, I see what you did there.
I just had to come back and say thanks, this video autoplayed without me noticing but I couldn’t switch it off. I hadn’t listened to them in years and the past few days have been a nice nostalgic jam after work. 🤘🏼
Really cool... thanks for uploading, man,
I would never have started playing guitar 30 years ago if it wasn't for Metallica. They lost me for a bit... or I lost them.
He he he he, the time is near, the metal licks it everytime
Correction:
- Bob Rock introduced Metallica to the idea of using D standard and Eb tuning during The Black Album, not Drop D.
RMTV, Thanks for another great doc cheers 2021
I know Bob Rock said that he introduced D standard to Metallica, which is strange. The Thing That Should Not Be off of Master of Puppets from ’86 was recorded in D standard tuning.
@@MetalmcBiff absolutely! I always found Rocks comment about that ridiculous.
Still baffles me that James, really all of them, was in their early-mid 20's during Master of Puppets. Becoming one of metals greatest albums.
If it werent for Metallica, Slayer wouldnt have made it. K.K Heard Metallica & immididtely went back & revamped Slayer from ground up, all new material, Atleast Kerry was Influenced by Metallica back then.
not to mention his days with megadeth, he definitely got some exposure
I was panhandling…”
Narrator: “James and Lars took one look at Dave’s expensive equipment and gave him the job immediately.” 🤔
Dave tells a different story: they hired him after warming up on his guitar.
Which makes sense since none dares to say that DM isnt one of the best.
Talent is talent and I respect anyone who has it.
thank you for this New Years present 👍
This documentary is awesome
RIP Mr. Burton
Gone to soon, your incredible bass lines bring tears to my eyes to this day
Great job and presentation!
8:45 the bottom tape foreshadowing AJFA 😂
Why is the Mechanix on it? I thought that was Megadeth's version of The four horsemen?
Great Documentary
Concise and to the point
Thanks for your excellent work!
Ohhh,,,how I miss Cliff,,,,
and Jason,,,,,,
and the days when Metallica really sounded and played like Metallica.
You clearly didn't see Metallica live in 2019... Amazing energy and sound...
So who do they sound like on the other days?
They are Metallica and no matter how they sound they still sound like Metallica. There is more than one single too lin a toolbox. They use them all. That's how music works. And they do whatever the fuck they want. Because it's a metal thing to not stick to conventions and labels. Metal is more than just thrash.
I love how the intro implies that they stopped with the Black album. Thats exactly how I see Metallica and evidently Im not alone. \m/
Saw my idols live at aftershock and it felt like a dream I'm within a few hundred feet from legends. Absolutely love Metallica man oh man was that show wild aftershock was also my first festival and all of my friends and it was my girlfriend first concert experience ever. .. safe to say they nailed it
Thanks 4 sharing admin ♥️🌹💪👍😘
Incredible work by you putting the awesome piece of work out there. As a Metallica fan since kill em all thanks bro! 👊🏽
Man I love your documentaries! i listen to them many times. The titles you use are so epic and a nice nod to the band's songs.
great documentary, i've seen many Metallica docs before but this has a lot of interesting new stuff and perspectives.
this is the second documentary I've watched of yours. Great work. Here's to hoping you pop 50k subs soon. you deserve it.
James: Welcome to the audition
Dave: alright let me jus...
James: Your in
Dave: But I did-
James: Your in alright?
Dave: Ok then
Greatest band of all time! Who else can be so successful over 40 years!! METALLICA FOREVER!!!!
Led Zeppelin are the greatest band of all time
I can name way WAY more metallica songs than Zepplin songs...
I was into Skee-low and his rap song Baller when I heard Metallica's Wherever I May Roam on the radio. Been a rocker ever since....

It`s a documentary featuring a lot of stuff i`ve never heard on the other 129 Metallica documentaries i`ve seen so far....so... yeah. Good job.
Bob Rock’s era has the most warm, harmonic and well crafted Metallica’s music and sound. I personally think he’s genius.
I love all albums BTW.
He turned them gay.
Great documentary.Thank you so much!!
First comment I see is someone dissing lars. He helped pioneer metal as we know it today. What have you done?
People are arrogant and forget quickly nowdays
Well if you noticed he put that in quotes because the narrator of this documentary said that but you knew that already...oh wait lol
X-ZAXLTY
I've grown well over 6 feet.. about a foot taller than Lars
When my mom did daycare back in 2000 and 2001, I always had the Reload album on tape and I thought it was the badass thing ever! Love it and Metallica to this day! Wake up sleepy one!
Lars said in an interview when he landed in LA he knew within 5 mins that he was nowhere near good enough to compete in Tennis. There were so many up coming players who were way out of his league back then.
Great documentary man, well put together... heard a couple of things I hadn't previously! 🤘Steve
Great documentary... Few new facts to the story line for me. Beside of that, it is the same story we have heard thousand of times...
Thanks man. Yeah I mean most people know the Metallica story by now. Just wanted to put my own spin on it! Cheers for watching though!
I love Cliff Burton's quote "You don't burn out from going too fast, you burn out from going too slow and getting bored." R.I.P. Cliff Burton; one of the best bass players metal ever had.
Little did they know, they would be one of if not the greatest band of all time!
I first heard, Metallica when I was 5 years old. I was with my mother in her green pinto, lol and my mother bought the "Black Album" real name of album, "Metallica" because my mom is badass and on the way back home, she played the album. Was awesome!!!!
Imagine being the people who were waiting for Metallica to play live, and then you realize that their bassist just died…
I have always loved Metallica. This was always my group. You helped me through so many terrible times. I related to you always. If I had it my way, I would want to meet all of you. That would truly make my dream come true. I lost my friend. He also was crazy for your band .Edward Arron Coadney died March first at 6pm.
Sorry I didn't tell you which year. Edward Aaron Coadney died on March first in 2022
Cliff, we miss you
My older brother was into that scene back in the early 80 the Motorhead, Merciful Fate, DiamondHead. I can remember when Metallica hit, they changed everything and the thrash era was born. It was an exciting time, metal truly ruled the world.
