In the latest episode of “Icons”, Gibson TV sits down with one of the most influential metal guitarists of all time, Kirk Hammett. Since 1983, Kirk Hammett has been the lead guitarist and a contributing songwriter for heavy metal trailblazers Metallica. Prior to joining the band, he formed the group Exodus during the birth of the San Francisco thrash metal movement.
Through archival and never before seen photos and video, Kirk takes viewers on a ride through his 37 years as lead guitarist of Metallica while sharing personal stories about his childhood, getting his first Gibson Flying V, the tragic death of bassist Cliff Burton and the recording of the group’s pivotal albums including Kill’em All, Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice For All and The Black Album.

To this day kirk still doesn’t know if hes officially in the band
thats because he isn't untill he isn't. Lars basically consideres no one "in the band" untill they "fokken left the band", its schroedingers cat of being in a band.

Kirk is the "quiet kid" of Metallica so it's really nice to finally have him talk about himself and the band for more than an hour
And not have anyone interrupt or talk over him
A lot of people hated him after St Anger coz of the solos thing, but I wish people would watch the documentary and this interview. A lot of insight to how he has quietly allowed himself to be kinda background his whole career.
Testament to his character that he had the patience to put up with it.

There would be studio footage of James being moody and Lars prodding him until they would erupt into an argument and they would storm off. Camera cuts to Kirk sitting on the other side of the room looking bummed. I kept thinking poor guy just wants to play music with his friends.

I find it amazing how the lead guitarist of one of the biggest bands in history doesn't seem to have one arrogant bone in his body.
Kirk is probably the most humble person, that is a mega millionaire rock star, on this planet.
I also find it amazing how the lead guitarist in the biggest metal band in history gets called ‘shit’, ‘useless’, ‘basic’, etc. constantly by people who actually think their opinion is more important than others’ opinions. Astonishing.

It's really refreshing to hear the way Kirk articulates his stories. His genuine positive attitude is the glue that keeps Metallica together.
Fact. Lars and James have these huge combative personalities and that creative tension probably was important to their success but they really needed someone like Kirk whose personality is a stabilizing influence on the group.. Mustaine could have never lasted

Out of all the Metallica band members, I've come to realize that Kirk is the one who is most enjoyable to listen to when it comes to recollecting the old days. He has a very vivid memory and is very articulate as a storyteller. He also genuinely seems like one of the nicest guys you could imagine. I could honestly listen to a long form podcast series where Kirk Hammett tells the entire Metallica story from his perspective. I think with his storytelling and commentating abilities, it would be an incredibly interesting and well-delivered piece of work.
I was there.. Monster's of rock 86 . First time I saw METALLICA. I had to buy a ticket for my dad too. He drove me there. Thanks, Dad, for being so cool. And for your record collection . Still has an influence to this day

Kirk has to be one the most selfless, genuine and easy going people in music. this doc was about him as a icon, and he talked like it was about all of his friends and family. Not once did he seem like he was bosting or trying to be the rock god. And he did write some of metals most iconic guitar parts that will be remembered for years to come

I’d say that’s a big reason why he’s lasted so long in the band. If he was egotistical, he’d have clashed badly with Lars and James and probably left a long time ago. He’s suppressed his ego to further the band. Fantastic band mate to have.

I haven’t finished watching the interview of it just yet. I have heard heaps about stuff his already mentioned. I’ve read my my book I brought titled Enter Night: MetallicA the biography book. It’s a very through and somewhat accurate book. I invested in buying a informative part of MetallicA as a band and personal insights to this monster named MetallicA 🤘🖤😎
When I was a kid , I remember I'd see an older kid in the street wearing a Metallica shirt and i thought the same thing , wow, what a great name for a band, and I was a kid, I didn't know shit about what a great metal band name was bit the pushead artwork and the band logo, holy shit! they gotta be the heaviest shit on earth, it wasn't long before I got to hear Lightning and I was floored ,Van Halen and def Leppard just didn't seem the same anymore

Kirk told the history without any ego which was very refreshing. He didn't go on first hour talking about him, he talked about the journey as a musician as a band with other musicians pretty much. He's a rare gem in the industry.

I'm sure he's got some form of survivor's guilt, due to him and Cliff having switched bunks on the night Cliff died. Had that not happened, Kirk likely would be have died in the accident, and Cliff would have survived it.

Speaking of Cliff, is it just me or does Lars never seem to express any feelings about Cliff? James and Kirk are usually the only ones to ever mention Cliff. Plus, Lars once referred to Cliff as a "sacrificial lamb" in SKOM. 🤔🤷♂️
You can 100% tell why James, Lars, and Cliff wanted Kirk in the band. Kirk is a very real human being.

@@rosiewhitfield123 he did, there are picture of Rob on stage with some dude in a wheelchair when Metallica was playing, probably around 1994. Think they shared stage a few times in the 90's
Rob played in Suicidal Tendencies, which was the support band at the 1993/94 black Album tour...Rob was a beast on the bass when he was in ST! Much more influential than now in Metallica. That's how they got aware of him.

I can’t get over how great of a story teller Kirk is, after every interview I watch I’m always left happy after it, watching my biggest inspiration talk for 1 hour and do it perfectly is great
it just makes me so happy to listen to him uninterrupted i could listen to him tell his storeys for hours
You have no idea how satisfied as a parent it is to hear your 18 year old son just jamming along with his guitar to Metallica in his room. 2020 has been such a depressing year but when I hear him playing Metallica and I can’t hear the TV I smile and know all will be fine. Thanks Kirk 🤘

Hetfield's writing is all about pain and misery and darkness and he's said himself that metal heads are all just at their shows cus it's like "therapy" for them. Get him into Joe Satriani and Dream Theater, Steve Vai, Andy Timmons, etc etc if you want him to excel technique wise tho :D

So at the end there, Kirk was talking about how it gives him a reason to get out of bed in the morning. The songs of Metallica has LITERALLY saved my life several times. Listening to your music has truly given me a: a moment of pause before I did something permanent, or b: that one reason that makes you push on for one more day. So a huge thank you, to you and to all of the members of Metallica.
My first tattoo was actually of the 'Metallica Star' in between my shoulder blades. I now have 38 tattoos and that one is still my favorite.
You can tell how introverted he is. You can also hear his social anxiety in his voice. I think this is why i relate to him so well. He's so humble and nice.

It goes to show when it comes to what is pushing you to live, to help you find a reason to be in this shit hole existence, you will find a way. My social skills fall just below a lobotomy candidate...it took me years to even speak on the internet...can't understand a single word I say in person unless I'm really close to you. I start having panic attacks or I lock up. The second I start singing I'm a totally different person. Music makes me feel and express in ways I never could otherwise.

He’s one of the most talented melodic lead writers I have ever heard. I am near 50 and have been playing for 35 years. Always been a mega fan of his talents but didn’t realize how genuine he is. Thanks. Great stories Kirk!

Many of us Thrashers and Punkers are gonna hit 60. While the new generation goes backwards to pussy ass Pop and lame rap. Thrash, Hip Hop, and Rock Metal has lost its true art and fan base in 2022. But we need to support the good stuff of all genres and not the crap put out there. .

I’m my opinion this man’s always been the most consistent part of Metallica (alongside Jason) . He’s never ceased to amaze me when he plays and he never gives off boastful or egotistic vibes. He’s all walk and very little talk (until this lol) and I’ve always appreciated that about him. TEAM KIRK😤😤😤

I was skeptical when I heard that Kirk had purchased Greeny, but he's proven that he deserves to own it, and that he cherishes its history.

I watched him jam with Michael Schenker on That Metal Show and he looked like a kid on Christmas morning. He's a classy dude
I'm amazed he takes the thing out on tour. Even though Metallica's security will no doubt be extremely tight, I still wouldn't risk it. The value and history of the guitar is just too much to take that chance
He is so honest, he really understates his contribution, his solo’s & riffs he composed have such feeling & emotion.

@@ticospacemusic Dave literally didn't wrote any solo from RTL. he only wrote Ktulu's main riff and title track spider chords after the second chorus. Dave was so jealous he even tried to attempt to claim that Leper Messiah contains one of his riffs and it literally doesn't sound like Dave would write.
Kirk is genuinely a good person. Humility is everywhere in his personality. He truly deserves all the success.
I loved this interview. What a gentle well spoken man. So much respect for him. I love his playing and his attitude.
Kirk is modest, but he also has a quiet confidence about him. He's not afraid to acknowledge the impact of the band. It's just an objective fact that they are one of the most important metal bands and will be forever. Not acknowledging that is false modesty and he's better than that.
I've always felt that Kirk had this intelligence, sensitivity, thoughtfulness, and insight- he just needs the right space for it to open up and express. It's so great to see him get to do this in this video. I love what he says towards the end about committing to guitar and making it a lifestyle.
I’ve always admired Kirk not only as a guitarist but as a person. He’s the George Harrison of Metallica.

Kirk is (and continues to be) more of a decent human being than George ever was. Harrison treated his ex wife Patti Boyd and women he was interviewed by terribly.
This guy was my hero throughout the 80s. He still is a huge influence on my playing. If not for Kirk and Metallica I would be lost.
I am 52 and from the SF Bay Area. I saw Metallica for the first in Nov. 83’, this is my scene, these are my friends. I thank god for being in the right place at the right time.

Really great to get this oral history and perspective from Kirk! Learned some interesting tidbits that I hadn’t heard before, and his passion really comes through at the end here. When u think of rockstars as arrogant and selfish people, because that fits their style... and then here is Kirk a living legend being so humble as he talks, he always says "we" never "me" or "I" and he always says his name last in listings where he refers afew other people, and also you can feel how much he loves all this. It's feels good to watch and listen him, I could probably enjoy that forever, just listen him telling stories.

I've always loved and respected Kirk as a person. He Is just such a genuinely wonderfull person with alot of empathy and utmost humility. As a musician I will always hold him in the highest regards since he got me inspired to focus on lead instead of rythm guitar.
Hearing him finally get a chance to express himself uninhibited in this format made me appreciate him even more. And hearing one of your ledgends talk about how they feel that they aren't good enough is a really humbling experience. There will allways be someone faster, cleaner, more technical or well versed, but Kirks contribution to Metallica is his and his alone.

Every time I see Kirk talking about music and other stuffs I always think: this guy is very nice.
I think he's underrated as a great guitarist. Some of the most beautiful solos ever made are from this man.
@Bret Zagar (zay-ger) No doubt Metallica as whole will always be talked about. When people bring up legendary guitarist no one ever mentions Kirk. It's always people like Randy Roads or Tom Morello or the late great Darrel Abbott. I feel he deserves more credit on a personal level. Thats what I mean!

Love Hammett. Metallica changed my life forever. Saw them as a teen during the Black Album Tour in Denver CO USA. Next day I asked my mom for a guitar. Been about 30 years and now I've passed my guitar to my son who's learning how to play. Life is good.

So fascinating interview. Kirk is so humble and down to hearth. His telling is like reading a book of memories. What struck me the most is how intense he was explaining the first gig with 30 people as it was yesterday. Most of the Rock stars would not even go there anymore. They could not even remember it. Egos you know...But not Kirk. The second was the raising of guitar maters as he pointed out, Malmsteen, Lynch, Van halen, and they pulled up justice for all to show they can be advanced technically. Still Kirk saying, "after 40 years of playing I should be better than that"....What is not to like in this man? :-)

Kirk has a pretty good memory and it’s a sure asset to have. It had to of been a treasured memory of his to remember his second gig as part of MetallicA it’s got to be a sacred achievement his done in his life journey. Kirk has a knack for being a musician and isn’t afraid of telling truths about what occurred. Good on this fantastic lead guitarist and may he have great physical health and mental clarity 😎🤘
Agreed, Kirk is such a likable guy and I'm far from the biggest Metallica fan ever...he just tells so stories well I could listen all day. I love to read but there's something special about oral history.
Whenever the band members recall memories, my favourite to listen to is Kirk. He explains things like he paints a vivid picture. Lars's can recall exact dates, exact stadium, exact time, what the weather was like. The way Kirk speaks is like listening to someone read a novel. This vid really makes me look at him in a different way. Not only as the lead player, but as a true pioneer. He was there through it all, from before the sound existed to the 50 crowds, to the 80,000 stadium tours. Just a guy that enjoys playing and never gave up on his craft.
