Always was a big fan of Suicidal Tendencies since the 1980s, so hearing that a bassist who has more talent than needed for the band from that group was hired for an all-time great metal/rock band-- was not exactly a minus for me considering his history! Praise RT!!

You make points, but I think they decided on other factors, like his look and his ethnicity/race and that he was in Su_cidal Tendencies. THere would be a hundred + bass players at a real open audition, buyt somehow they only got players fdrom other famous bands show up ?!?!
@@CourtWatchAuLars specifically said they wanted somebody with experience playing on that level, that's been around the block above few times. All the guys shown have played arenas on massive tours. I'm sure there's a ton of guys that have played in clubs and garages that could play well enough, but could they handle the pressure? Lars may be a mediocre drummer, but his business and promotional senses are usually pretty dialed in.
Pepper from COC was thrash / metal, but he's a guitarist / singer. Scott Reeder was from stoner rock, but he's a great bassist, and I'm pretty sure he could've handled Metallica material.

Check out the last 2 Kyuss LPs or UNIDA check out their live vids Scott was def the best musician in those bands. The music is slower but still very heavy. They got me into Stoner Rock.

Rob was the perfect choice. He had the look, the energy, the vibe and most importantly the chops to join Metallica. Any band will tell you that its difficult to replace a member. All the money in the world cannot buy the right chemistry. You just have to sort of get lucky and hope the right guy walks in the room.

Rob REALLY saved Metallica's ass. They were at such a low point creatively on the music side and chemistry wise on the relationship side. They were on a downward spiral and about to implode. Rob came along and brought a new, younger energy and playing style that breathed life back into the band.

Everyone thinks Lars is an asshole, but I think every successful band needs one of those. You got the body, the heart, the voice, the soul...and the asshole. Beatles, Stones, Sabbath, Zeppelin...there's always an asshole to those bodies of work. Its like Pacino said in a movie: " Every family's got one"
Lars was in a way the founder of Metallica and he named the band. Furthermore he was the one that made the first published recordings possible... He might not be a good musician but his doing made Metallica popular.
Saw Metallica at AT&T stadium in Arlington last September and it was an amazing experience. Robert was a beast out there on stage, his presence and enthusiasm brought the performance to life. So glad he was the one they chose as their 4th man. He truly deserves it.

Probably because James is just as bad as Lars, and those two think alike. Lars is also that guy to James in such a way, that any negative opinion that could make the band look bad. But yet, Lars is the asshole, especially in any interview. That's only what I heard anyways. Also, I can't see how a person can be around somebody like Lars and not be a dick to some degree.
I heard because of Sharon Osbourne they use to Penny pinch the backup band. At least they did when Jake E Lee was in the band he didn't get credit for the songs he wrote on Bark at the Moon. But on the ultimate sin album he made sure he got paid for writing those songs.

+Rambo28 This movie edited stuff down to look like a direct story the way a reality show does, I'd bet a lot of stuff is shown weeks out of sequence in this clip. Rob actually had a "callback" audition with the band where they pretty much knew they wanted to hire him but needed to hang out/jam with him some more... I'm guessing it's the second time he jammed with them he didn't have a bass, as he was staying at Lars's house and also borrowing a t-shirt of Lars (who took him out and got him shitfaced the night before, he's hungover as fuck in a few of these scenes) He told the story on Marc Maron's WTF podcast recently. There's also cut scenes from between his two auditions showing that the band's management suggested they use Trujillo for the Raiders parking lot gig, but they object that he "isn't even in the band yet" and used Bob Rock instead.
Fucking Lars early on was a beast on the drums, its metal drumming tons of bands use off timing in drums. But I can tell you Lars can keep time, he just old and most likely doesnt practice as he once did.
There is 2 wrong thoughts about this album. "What shit is it?" and "What is it? Thats cool!". Second is.. i don't know what about him. But first just not trying to understand artist and album, or just dont need it. Album simlpe, controversal, but it was about things that realy happens with this guys. Its kinda honest art, without trying to be someone else.

+Paulo Mondaca Well, it is fretted bass so there is not much of reason to be really out of tune. Unless their octaves are not set right or if they bend too much, which none of them did. They are proffesional bassists, they know how to tune their instrument. Also that riff is in chromatic scale, so it might feel a bit sharp in some way and of course, tempered tune feels a bit diffirent on every bass. That's what I think.

From Cliff's death to this audition Metallica had become what Lars, James, Kirk, to a degree Bob Rock, and mostly Lars had made it. With some old reports surfacing, it seems that if Cliff lived one of two things would have happened: Cliff would have left or Lars would have been booted. If the former happened and Metallica made similar if not the same decisions with the band direction, this video would not exist. Because Cliff would be hired back with the Metallica collective begging, "Help Us! We screwed up and we don't know how to fix it. Help US!"

Because they are not the same persons they were when they started. They grew up and changed their style, as well as their motive. The reason Lars said that was because they are different then they were 30 years ago, and when they got Cliff, their goal was to rule the world and get drunk/fucked up. Now, when 22 years later, they hold a new audition, and their motives and personality changed. Thats why :) And I am sure they all played more songs than For Whom..

Can’t tell you how much I deplore the day James started to believe he could sing and Lars that he mattered. Metallica’s first 5 albums are fantastic save for Lars holding Jason newkid’s bass balls. Many kids became fans of the black album but it was the moment I realized I was OUT.

They basically treated him how the record labels do it with an advance to anyone they sign. Deff not a bad business expenditure by the band, even if it had been a 1M contract signing payment I think he brought enough value to have it have been a good investment.

Gregory Geloewski James did clarify that it was an ''advance on a percentage'' so I took that to mean that he was getting his first however long's percentage cut up front as opposed to how you put it i.e. a million and ALSO a percentage to follow. That's just how I took it though.

Cliff Burton was ok, I personally liked the way he played, he got style and presence on stage, but this new guy is simply amazing! I saw the entire concert on the AT&T previous to the Superbowl 50 and I was amazed. I'm not talking about Metallica's performance that night, I'm talking about ROBERT that night! Simply WOW! PLUS the guy's cool! He seems to be nice, respectful but kick-ass and arrogant at the same time! Weird I know... Perfect fit for the band!

He was a perfect fit right away. Not sure if they did anything specific to make his tone stand out more in the auditions for the film since they knew he was "the guy" but it was so obviously the right fit. Glad to see him still in the band and kicking ass.

I remember being real excited to learn about this. Strange to think that Rob has been in the band longer than Jason and Cliff put together. They are all awesome players in their own right. Its just great that this band is still here, making music and playing live.

Rob REALLY saved Metallica's ass. They were at such a low point creatively on the music side and chemistry wise on the relationship side. They were on a downward spiral and about to implode. Rob came along and brought a new, younger energy and playing style that breathed life back into the band.

Saw Metallica at AT&T stadium in Arlington last September and it was an amazing experience. Robert was a beast out there on stage, his presence and enthusiasm brought the performance to life. So glad he was the one they chose as their 4th man. He truly deserves it.

I'm guessing it's the second time he jammed with them he didn't have a bass, as he was staying at Lars's house and also borrowing a t-shirt of Lars (who took him out and got him shitfaced the night before, he's hungover as fuck in a few of these scenes) He told the story on Marc Maron's WTF podcast recently.
There's also cut scenes from between his two auditions showing that the band's management suggested they use Trujillo for the Raiders parking lot gig, but they object that he "isn't even in the band yet" and used Bob Rock instead.

+Paulo Mondaca Well, it is fretted bass so there is not much of reason to be really out of tune. Unless their octaves are not set right or if they bend too much, which none of them did. They are proffesional bassists, they know how to tune their instrument. Also that riff is in chromatic scale, so it might feel a bit sharp in some way and of course, tempered tune feels a bit diffirent on every bass.

Because they are not the same persons they were when they started. They grew up and changed their style, as well as their motive. The reason Lars said that was because they are different then they were 30 years ago, and when they got Cliff, their goal was to rule the world and get drunk/fucked up. Now, when 22 years later, they hold a new audition, and their motives and personality changed. Thats why :)

Can’t tell you how much I deplore the day James started to believe he could sing and Lars that he mattered. Metallica’s first 5 albums are fantastic save for Lars holding Jason newkid’s bass balls. Many kids became fans of the black album but it was the moment I realized I was OUT.

They basically treated him how the record labels do it with an advance to anyone they sign. Deff not a bad business expenditure by the band, even if it had been a 1M contract signing payment I think he brought enough value to have it have been a good investment.

Cliff Burton was ok, I personally liked the way he played, he got style and presence on stage, but this new guy is simply amazing! I saw the entire concert on the AT&T previous to the Superbowl 50 and I was amazed. I'm not talking about Metallica's performance that night, I'm talking about ROBERT that night! Simply WOW! PLUS the guy's cool! He seems to be nice, respectful but kick-ass and arrogant at the same time! Weird I know... Perfect fit for the band!

Their music has been getting less and less dynamic over time. I really don't like all the instruments being at the same volume all the time.
He was a perfect fit right away. Not sure if they did anything specific to make his tone stand out more in the auditions for the film since they knew he was "the guy" but it was so obviously the right fit. Glad to see him still in the band and kicking ass.

@@AustinHansen He wouldn't be happy as a "Yes Sir" player and no real creative input. Rob is a great player, but also seems content on playing in bands he has no real creativity in like Ozzy, Suicidal, etc.

There is much honor is pirating music. You got it backwards as far as your Walmart comment, in the modern world, great musicians create their own label and give out most of their music free in a lot of cases. Only entitled greedy little shits in the industry care about napster and free music downloading, and of course struggling musicians who got fucked over by their label contracts, but mostly greedy dicks.

I remember being real excited to learn about this. Strange to think that Rob has been in the band longer than Jason and Cliff put together. They are all awesome players in their own right. Its just great that this band is still here, making music and playing live.
