MG TF Suspension Refurb

  • When I took the MG TF suspension struts off they looked pretty tired and never gave them a second thought! Having looked at replacement suspension it became clear that the "go-to" option is a soft ride kit, but I wanted to first experience the MG TF as it was originally designed...so....I try to save them!

Great work once again, you may find the OEM suspension to be OK without feeling the need to upgrade. I've personally never found the suspension on the TF to be an issue.

Love this video series. I wish I never got rid of my TF!
You’re going to love it when she’s up and running - just be careful in the wet!

I bought a Vvc around 18 months ago, unfortunately she had a dropped cylinder liner and I thought that was that.
However you have totally changed that and not only tackling the engine but going to follow what you are doing.
So easy to follow and nothing is too difficult
Amazing thanks so much and keep it up 😬👏👏👏👏

Great film again Lee, I saw rust on mine and put them on the list for a replacement soft ride kit, after seeing this, I'll give them another coat of looking at...cheers, and keep going!

A useful video, Lee. Thanks for sharing your experience. I have had the rear suspension units replaced on mine. I plan to do the front myself. The lower bushes are the usual reason that people replace the units as a whole. As you say, the springs and dampers seem to last well. At the time mine failed the MOT with soft bottom bushes, I was told that replacement bushes were not available, hence replacing the whole units. The bottom bushes looked alright but they had gone very soft, which was apparent when the MOT man applied a bit of force with a lever. You might want to check to see if yours need replacing. They seem to be available now on eBay but they aren't cheap! I'm really enjoying your videos :-)

Great video Lee, well done. I completely agree with reinstalling the shocks and springs that you took off for the same reason you gave, you have never driven the car and don't know what the ride is like. And who knows, maybe the previous owner had already replaced the original springs/struts with soft ride springs/struts.

Many thanks. Super video, as ever. I am currently doing the same to my TF, and it is most useful to be guided by your experiences, keep it up. And yes, I have similar spring compressors, but the scare the @#£# out of me when they are under tension.

I upgraded from standard suspension to the MGOC comfort pack based on an MG specialist recomendation, it was a lot better.
The road to the specialist is a bumpy private track, before the the upgrade above 10 MPH was uncomfortable, afterwards I was able to drive at 30 MPH before it became uncomfortable.
The MG is a sports car so the suspension should always be on the firm side, I have read comments on forums that the soft ride kit increases body roll as it is softer.

Hi mate good video and fair play to you for refurbing. Sometimes it's too easy to bin stuff for shinney new upgraded parts. I'm terrible for it I went for spax ksx adjustable shocks and 25mm lower eibach springs. But my car is going in the track. A little advise on rhe two rubber bushes if that's ok. The bottom one goes concave down on top of the lower washer then fits in the Subframe, then you put the upper bush in the top of the Subframe cup concave facing upwards with the washer and nut on top. Hope that makes sense.

      @wheatleysworkshop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Ahh cheers Mark, you're absolutely right, have looked and the other upper bush is still on the subframe!! 😖

There you go then also one thing I'd suggest is to change the bottom bush on the shock as they're quite cheap on eBay and pretty easy to do as a press fit in and out. They're a weak point and also as you've done the hub bearing and ball joint imagine putting it all back together to find out the bush is shot. New higher tensile bottom bolts are advised for the shocks after removal aswell. Keep up the good work and just keep going lol 👍😄😉

Hi MGLee, I'm a longer term viewer since the beginning, the chap who told you to take your nuts off the studs, rather than just putting the studs back in as a bolt. I am pleased to say since those days I've now bought a TF, an up and running 03 plate, a decision that was really spurred by watching your videos, so thanks for doing what you do as I'll be looking at your videos again, when I end up doing what your doing, and you move to do doing to what I'm doing -- driving the thing.
Yes your right to get the experience of the original suspension which is what I have, otherwise we would never know what improvement the softer set up brings. On smooth roads the suspension is fine, but if pot holes or rough surfaces she really does bang and crash over the bumps. There aren't really any cup holders which is just as well, because you'll end up wearing more of your Costa Coffee than you'll drink. It really can be that rough.
I am curious to know mind, have you ever had this car running since you bought it ? I can't remember if you've mentioned that elsewhere ?

Thanks Alex, it's great to hear you've got a TF too 👍🚘 I've only ever heard the engine running once, when I went to collect it was driven onto the back of a flat bed.... it was running for around a couple of minutes and drove all of 10ft but it ran..... ive worked on it since then though! 🤔🤣

Great video again Lee. I’ve done these myself before on my first TF, not a fun job sometimes, especially when you have to change the lower bush, but not too bad. Nicely explained and will certainly keep those shocks going for a while longer on the car. Cheers, keep it up!

Another great video Lee. You certainly like and have taken on a challenge for sure. In a similar situation having only driven my TF back from the seller and have the engine stripped down to the pistons. Currently fitting shims under the liners as they were only about one and a half thou above. Thankfully the body on the car is in good shape. Mine is also a winter project and hoping to get it ready for spring. Keep up the fun and informative videos. If the cat gets wrapped up in the tin foil it could be a change from turkey for Christmas! 😜

    Hello,
When the spring compressor is under pressure, be careful with your fingers.
I have seen many injuries where the tensioner suddenly came off and fingers were injured.
You should always keep the shock absorber in
    tighten the vise.
Fortunately, the spring of the MG f does not have a great deal of tension.
As always, video is well done.
    Greetings from Germany

Normally you would measure the spring to see how worn it is compared to a new one..
    But loving the channel..
I have my eye on an MGF neglected on someone's drive way!..
    Kind Regards
    Steve

Cleaning spring steel In that manner will put thousands of potential stress cracks in it. Media blasting is much better.

Hi Lee - I’ve just purchased soft ride front struts from a later 05 TF and am refurbish as you did. Could I ask where you got the replacement top rubbers from please? Also I can see the Rimmers diagram shows two for each strut - are they both below the wing top or one above and one below please?
Thanks in advance. If you’re interested I’ll let you know how they feel compared to standard (I’m not doing the backs as well at this point in time).

"I'd rather it be my like button" thats what she said! Great vid as always, i hate those spring compressors they bring bad merc spring memories which ended with a drunk Russian engineer at 6pm on a sunday on a shady industrial estate...brrrrr back to the darkness nightmares.
