Hi Danny, watched this video yesterday, and went to the range this morning to try it out.initially it felt awkward, but I persisted. I’m 67, and don’t usually hit the ball very far. But when I got the hang of it, the ball flew far further than I’ve seen for years, and without much effort. I have to say that I don’t understand why, it felt as though it shouldn’t go far at all, but it did with every club. So all I can say is thank you. I’ve now got to get a gapping session organised.
Came back to golf after a 14 year break. These videos have helped so much. I have a lot to work on, but I feel more in control than I ever did back when I was younger.
I finally got to the course this past weekend (been practicing for months on my five acre lot, dodging oak trees). While I began so conscious of every little movement, I finally loosened up and took some nice controlled swings. I wound up parring 3 holes, including 17 and 18. My other par was a 20 foot chip -in utilizing the "fishy tail" approach. Had some huge inconsistencies but golf was fun again. Thanks Danny.
Great stuff as always Danny, thank you so much for the time & effort you put in to help us all. How many people all around the world play better & enjoy this wonderful game more because of you! Hats off to you!

Hi Danny Great video as always. After watching what's apparent to me is you start the swing with your body rather than with the hands. The main thing is trying to return that club face to square at impact. So adding your catapult drill and using the club as a pendulum, and starting this drill with your body you should get a rhythmic swing that's consistent and start to feel compression on the ball. The main thing is to eliminate the fat shots so this video and drill should help
Good day; after watching your video w Pete Cowan, where he mentioned about the right elbow being the key, I worked at it and droped my handicap from 21 to 14. Driving, irons and contact have improved exponentially. Thanks for the tip.
Hi Danny. I’ve just had my best round of golf as a senior golfer for ages. Your advice worked a treat and I didn’t hit he ball fat once. Thank you so much and keep those videos coming. John
Terrific! My game has improved markedly since I became more connected on the right side. My swing has become flatter allowing for an effortless swing through the zone. When I rush, or become disconnected, the clubhead isn't nearly as square at the bottom. Always appreciate you Danny!
It's interesting that you displayed the trail arm appearing to be disconnected from the body at the elbow, because many beginners are taught to keep the trail elbow in contact with the body. I tell other beginners that it's okay for that elbow to be separated from the body, because, as you showed, it still is and FEELS connected even though it isn't actually touching the body. As long as you still feel the 'connected' sensation as you draw back, then you are in fact still connected and in control. The big difference between pros and joes is often this element. The pros are taking the club very far away and not, in a sense, chicken winged on their takeaway. I practice letting the club point out and away and really allowing my arms to stretch out while maintaining that connected sensation. This really helps add length with very little effort. And at least for me, as I got used to it, it also promoted iron accuracy. It's hard to be inconsistent when your takeaway is fully extended. It's either fully extended or it isn't. You see chunks and slices disappear entirely by doing this effectively. I like this video. Great points made. My main tip to others, let that arm flow back and through. Take steady swings. Get used to it feeling connected but also being extended out. You'll be surprised with the improvements.
Number 3 is spot on. Not a fan of using devices but 3 works great for creating feel without cluttering the mind with swing thoughts. Couple that with keeping the feet together. Thanks for the different ideas, because everyone reacts differently to different things
Danny, like most amateurs, I'm consistent as heck - consistently bad. Nah, not really. My game has significantly improved thanks to some of your tips - almost a single-digit handicap - it's my putting and short game that needs improvement, so I'm working on that - and it's coming around. I'm pretty decent off the tee now I'm using TM's BRNR - it's a fairway finder. Course management has also helped a lot. Paying attention to pin locations for my approach shots may be the biggest improvement - trying to avoid downhill putts as much as possible. So I club up/down depending which offers best chance of an uphill putt - saves at least 2 putts per round just by being more considered on my approach shots.

I have been using the instruction you provided by Pete Cowan that has really improved my ball striking. My only issue was that when I got to the impact zone i was a little lost as what to do. I was hitting the ball well but it was a power fade. This instruction provided insight through the impact zone and into the followthrough. Hi Danny, first at all thank you very much for the great lessons. I have some problems with the coordination between a free swinging club and the right grip pressure. If a let the grip to lose it tents to lose contact with all my fingers of the hand because of grafity. If the pressure is to hard my forearm muscles are to tense for letting the club swing freely. The question is where should control end and how much control is needed.
Hi Danny, thanks so much for this … I was wondering if you have a lesson on pre shot routines? My golf has improved but my last couple of rounds were erratic as I find myself rapidly mentally flicking through 000”s of your tips whilst over the ball .. thanks as always
All three steps that you showed in this video Danny are excellent. I have been working on these very same things in my swing. I'm glad that this video substantiates what I am doing. I know it's taken my golf game to a whole new level. Thank You Danny and Well Done!
Thanks Danny. The single best tip, and my go to when I start getting wild, is tucking the trail elbow in and pointing the elbow pocket out. And this builds on that. But then on the next hole I forget, and start flailing my arms around again. Golf is hard! Please keep tips and drills coming - one day I will have a break through.
Havent even watch it yet but already smashed the like button dead center. Thats the amount of trust i have in this man. With that said, now ima enjoy these 10 min, knowing i will get something to think about at my afternoon practise😎
Something I noticed from video of a pro that I was shown during a lesson a few years back - and that I see here too - but that wasn’t mentioned then or now is that the forearm of the trail arm (your right arm for RH players) is completely vertical at the top of the swing (wrist directly above the elbow). I think that’s somehow important to setting up the swing, but how do you get it there? Here you’ve given some nice instruction as to how to get to that position without actually referring to it. It could be weird to think about that position when swinging, but if you take video of yourself, or have someone watch you looking for it, it could be diagnostic of what you need to fix in your swing. Appreciate the videos, as always. Cheers. Evan in Winnipeg
Another great, informative session Danny. I need this constant re-enforcement to keep my trail arm tucked. It's like Moe Norman used to say to keep trail forearm sunny side up. You're bringing me back to yesteryear and it's much appreciated. Stay well my friend.-Russ
I practiced this while watching you Danny... Like always, simple, easy to implement...My question, where do I sign up for the PGA Tour???... Just great as always, ahahaha, silly me..
Add your depth with Right hip turn on the way back, then feel like the Left hip comes rearward to match the Right hip on the transition & down through impact to follow through. (If you're RH golfer.. reverse if LH) -that's what works for me. Hope it helps.
@@DanielMaude This is possibly the best I’ve played for years. Gone from 6.5 to 3.4 this season but still wasn’t happy with the inconsistent flight with the driver and 3 wood . Practiced a bit yesterday and what a difference. Better, higher flight but still a strong trajectory 👍Thank you
Great video and instructions. The recommended fitness band works great for the thighs, but it was very tight and nearly impossible to wrap over the shoulders. Do you have any recommends because I really like the idea of a shoulder wrap
Danny, how does this fitness band drill mesh with your lesson on lifting the arms on a 45* angle over your right shoulder? Your arm lifting back swing puts me in a great position at the top, BUT does make the arms feel a little disconnected from the body.
Brilliant Danny, 2 concepts I’ve never quite understood how to implement (right hand movement and wrist hinge) but you have made it look easy to practice and implement - can’t wait to try it. THANKS!
Obviously I’ve watched you for years. This elbow (wrist) angle change has been fantastic for me. The elbow feels bizarre at first, but it really works. Been doing this for a while and wow!!!
Hi Danny love your videos, please could you answer this question? Hitting irons i look 2 inches in front of the ball that gives me a hit after the ball. Where do you look when hitting driver ? Cheers 😊
Hey Danny, as a result of this and the Pete video, I feel like I’m getting in great positions at the top with the ‘tucked in’ right elbow. I think I’m having issues in transition or impact though. For some reason my ball flights appear to end up right of target (I’m assuming I’m keeping the face open at impact?). Appreciate you can’t see my swing, but is there anything that you think could be causing this? (Grip is neutral) Hoping to get to Canterbury at some point regardless to get some time with you - what’s the best way to do this?
I took his advice and regripped a spare 7 iron with putter grip at 45 degree angle…my flexibility and trust factor hinders me but what he’s showing is the true way to strike ball.
Dan, the first drill feels a bit confusing since the fingers are running parallel to the golf shaft and if i have the same feeling but gripping with both hands then my left wrist gets all weird and weak. feels easy to do when my fingers run parallel to the shaft but when gripping for real doesnt feel right. any advice?
How firm should the wrist be on the downswing? Locked and cocked but does it stay that way all the way to impact and beyond? Does the palm stay behind the wrist throughout the entire swing?
Hi Thomas, no you never want to try and hold the angles on the way down. What I love about the paddle drill here is, particularly if you hit balls with it, is it gives you a great feeling of what’s required. If you find that your wrists are flicking it’s never a case of trying to hold them back. They are doing this to compensate and help you out. Usually because the arms and body aren’t dorky their job This is why I live the drills in this video as they teach the arms and body what to feel
Keeping it simple, as you always demonstrate, is key. I liken my golf game to the juggler spinning 20 plates , the first plate always falls off as the 20th starts 😂 my brain only has enough control for one thought when over the ball .. so tips like these really help!
This is going to sound weird.... I've got a torn rotator cuff at the minute. Right handed, right shoulder. I can't get out of control with my right side and I can only half swing.... I usually break 80 5 or 6 times over the summer months.... 8 times with most of August and September to go..... Forced control! 👏👏👏
I completely severed the rotator cuff in my right shoulder without bursting the capsule. It took 9 months of physiotherapy to build sufficient strength in my shoulder to be able to swing a golf club. I’ve lost some distance but am still playing to a 15 index. The physio is key to regaining your strength, and then work with a coach to build a swing that will protect your shoulder. Your game will definitely get better.
I finally discovered this simple truth about the right arm controlling the swing in 2008 when my late 50s after I retired, took a part time job as a starter at a golf course so I could play free golf and decided to re-boot my swing by following the advice of Ben Hogan in Five Lessons with a set of unforgiving late 70s Wilson Reflex blade irons I found at a thrift store and re-gripped. I had started playing in 1983 when convention wisdom was to swing in the style of Nicklaus lifting the front foot off the ground, then in the 90s when down the X factor rabbit hole of static hips and over stressed back none of which I was able to coordinate with any consistently because where were so many randomly moving parts. I quickly realized what made Hogan’s method so consistent, starting with how he gripped the club, was that it maxed out the movement of the wrist at key points in the swing. For example it is getting the right hand up over the left in the grip then swinging the club back with shoulder turn with no CONSCIOUS wrist action which causes the rapidly increasing club force to hinge the trail (right) wrist into maxed out extension which then creates the leverage which forces the right arm to fold elbow down and externally rotate which also creates very efficient leverage, which I realized is the secret to controlling the force of the club head which tries to steer the hand lead left hand and arm. 99% of the pros finally came around to realizing the way Hogan took the club away from the ball and caused the trail arm to fold worked better than the conventional wisdom that replaced it 😂
Huh? The third paragraph is complete word salad gibberish. Think I’ll stick w Danny’s explanation (or Hogan’s). On backswing, tuck your trail elbow, forearms up, body turn, keep lead wrist flat (which keeps trial hand palm up, club face to the sky). With the finger grip, the hinge will happen naturally.
Really struggling with my driver at the moment. I’m new to the sport, but seem to be pretty decent with my irons. Driver however, is all over the place. I can generate decent swing speed and distance, but the consistency is appalling. Occasionally goes straight, but 90% of the time it’s a slice. The ball starts off straight, but as it gains height, it curves horribly to the right. From what I’ve read/heard, this is caused by the differential between the club face and the club path. Face is square at impact, but don’t understand how to get the ball to fly straight when the swing is a natural arc. Once you reach impact, the swing naturally goes left due to the arc, so how do I achieve a square face to path when the swing arc naturally goes against that goal?
Absolutely normal Graham, many of my students aren’t able to do it fully either. The key is to move towards this only to your flexibility will allow. That way you are locking in your body so that you can support the club to swing freely. As opposed to allowing the arms to bend and collapse to complete your swing. This can help with power but it’s harder to control that power and direct it consistently shot after shot
Hi Danny, watched this video yesterday, and went to the range this morning to try it out.initially it felt awkward, but I persisted. I’m 67, and don’t usually hit the ball very far. Another informative video, I look forward to these every week. How can I arrange a one to one lesson with yourself ? I ask every week. 🙏🏼 ⛳️
Hi Dave, reach out to support@dannymaude.com 👍
Great video Danny.u remind me of Miyagi of Karate Kid, the way u bring it all together. 😀
Thanks so much for the support 🙏
Your Awesome Danny,,, thank you from Florida USA,,,,,
@josephshuster4904 thank you so much 😊 you are most welcome 🙏🏻
Hi Danny love your videos, please could you answer this question? Hitting irons i look 2 inches in front of the ball that gives me a hit after the ball. Where do you look when hitting driver ? Cheers 😊
Often slightly behind the ball
Thanks much appreciated ill try it at the range, keep up the great content , @DanielMaude
I followed your driver tips from two weeks ago and actually won my golf club’s monthly medal couldn’t believe it, Thanks Tony
Brilliant Tony, well done 🙌
Hey Danny, as a result of this and the Pete video, I feel like I’m getting in great positions at the top with the ‘tucked in’ right elbow.
I think I’m having issues in transition or impact though. For some reason my ball flights appear to end up right of target (I’m assuming I’m keeping the face open at impact?).
Appreciate you can’t see my swing, but is there anything that you think could be causing this? (Grip is neutral)
Hoping to get to Canterbury at some point regardless to get some time with you - what’s the best way to do this?
I sometimes tuck my shirt in under my armpits to keep my arms more compact. Works with putting too and you can do it legally on the course!
I like that too…one thing I like personally is to keep a little freedom in my arms as t helps with power so I don’t keep them rammed into my side
Even with pitching please?
I took his advice and regripped a spare 7 iron with putter grip at 45 degree angle…my flexibility and trust factor hinders me but what he’s showing is the true way to strike ball.
Really appreciate the support
Usually because the arms and body aren’t dorky their job
This is why I live the drills in this video as they teach the arms and body what to feel
Is this the same feel you experienced with pete cowan and spinning the arm fown @danny
I thought I was the only one using a swimming hand paddle... great video😊👍⛳
😂 thank you, appreciate the support 👍
Will give it a try before todays round
Maybe something to do afterwards Dave. Enjoy your game today and come back to do the exercises.
Have a great weekend
@@DanielMaude probably sensible 😂
Keeping it simple, as you always demonstrate, is key. I liken my golf game to the juggler spinning 20 plates , the first plate always falls off as the 20th starts 😂 my brain only has enough control for one thought when over the ball .. so tips like these really help!
Happy to help 😁
Looks like you can finally help your wife with the duster. Another really good and helpful video Danny. Another good start to Saturday.
😂
Great work sir 👍🏻
Thank you 😁
the 3rd drill just dropped my score from 95-98 to 87-89. amazing drill
@Malalahmmtime123 that’s great. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Dear Danny, Can you please make a video about the short game?
What would you like to know?
This is going to sound weird.... I've got a torn rotator cuff at the minute. Right handed, right shoulder. I can't get out of control with my right side and I can only half swing.... I usually break 80 5 or 6 times over the summer months.... 8 times with most of August and September to go..... Forced control! 👏👏👏
I’ve found that over the years. At one stage my back was super tight and I’m trying to protect it I naturally swung more under control
@@DanielMaude Denny, how about using driver and wood. Is it the same with irons as you explained. Thank you
10% of people have their left arm coming out of their back. No joke.
@tedharman5354 wise words Ted. Cheers pal. 👍
Hey Danny, my question would be how this converts to driver? Is this just an iron shot?
99% of the pros finally came around to realizing the way Hogan took the club away from the ball and caused the trail arm to fold worked better than the conventional wisdom that replaced it 😂
Thanks for taking the time to share
Nice explanation of how to swing 'connected.'
@tomnelson8515 thank you 🙏🏻
Where can you purchase the blue hand training aid? I am trying to teach my wife the concept of where the arms need to be.
I’ve left all the details in the drop down box below
Are you consciously rolling over the wrists at impact?
It’s more of the forearms than the wrists
Love your online lessons Danny every thing is so simple but effective many thanks 😊
Thanks Dell 😁
Terry Cork
Once again thanks Danny
Thank you Terry 🙌
I can only extend my right wrist about 60 deg - can’t form the tray or any way near it. Any hints ?
Absolutely normal Graham, many of my students aren’t able to do it fully either. The key is to move towards this only to your flexibility will allow. That way you are locking in your body so that you can support the club to swing freely.
As opposed to allowing the arms to bend and collapse to complete your swing.
This can help with power but it’s harder to control that power and direct it consistently shot after shot
