This is one of the best videos I've seen for fairway woods and hybrids...........I've been topping my 3-wood for a long time......can't wait to hit the range and implement what was explained in this lesson!!!
Great video.I have been struggling with my hybrids and fariway woods off the deck. After watching this video I went to the range and applied GG's tips. The difference in swinging down on the ball and making contact higher on the face made a world of difference in shot shape and distance with these clubs. Lining the club up off the left ear and placing a little more weight on the left side at address really helped with making the correct contact. And the explanation about the correct way to create good contact with the sole of these clubs was huge, helping me avoid getting the leading edge getting stuck in the turf which I do often. Also, the hands low tip was extremely helpful. I have a tendency to lift my arms in the backswing with longer clubs. This tip helped me not only with my hybrids and fairway woods, but also with my driver and 6 and 5 irons. One request though. Any possibility of doing a video on how to set up with hybrids and fairway woods on uneven lies in the fairway, especially when the ball is below your feet? My home course is a links course with a lot of tricky lies. In particular the 18th hole is a very long par 4, which is sloped left to right with plenty of undulations. The green also slopes left to right and the prevailing wind off the water is in the direction as well. I usually end up hitting a hybrid or 5 wood in, but rarely do I make good enough contact to get home in two. Many times I just end laying up and try to make a one putt par. Any advice on how to play that type of shot would be greatly appreciated,
I have videos of uneven lies coming out in the future. The changes are the same with irons, hybrids and fairway woods so stay tuned for it. Glad you enjoyed the video!
You must have seen me play yesterday. I topped my 7 wood a few times yesterday! But. Irons were great. I actually made a few divots where normally I pick the ball. The low point control with the weight shift has been a game changer. Thanks again.
Great tips and video! I figured out how to hit a fairway wood by accident, well a happy acciden! 😁 I had a super long approach on a Par 5 and I was mad how far I left myself out due to my crappy drive. The approach is uphill and there was a little headwind, too. I swung as hard as I could thinking I had no chance to make it, but we are going to try, and I hit the most beautiful, high and long shot I had ever hit with a fairway wood. The ball carried to the edge of the green and landed softly and then rolled past the hole. I two-putted for a birdie and walked off the green with a wide smile. While thinking about what felt different about that shot, it was that I felt like I threw the club at the ball. It was a deliberate move away from the body. On the next Par 5, I tried again mimicking the throwing motion and the ball took off again. My golf mates even mentioned how well both of those shots went. So, I kept doing it and the results have been great. I’ve flubbed a many fairway shot since, but I sure as hell hit a lot more, and better ones, than I did before. Take that first swing thought to heart. It is money!
Nice one Giles, I’m always looking for the eureka moment in a swing thought, and maybe the ‘low hands’ could be the game changer. For me personally, if I want to hit my 5 wood/3 wood flush of the deck, I work on a slow takeaway and making sure I complete my backswing. So for full shoulder rotation I need to be patient and work my way to the top of the backswing, and from here I find it so much easier. Otherwise if I rush I don’t finish the backswing fully and am prone to topping them as a result of bad tempo etc. I wish I could just swing and not think about anything!! Merry Christmas and a happy new year! P.S loved your content with Eric, he’s a great instructor as well.
Thank you. So good job done for weekend Warriors. Simple plain english on how and why… It’s applying to my game 100% since my longest irons is now a 6i and I play : D, 3W, 7W, h3,h4 or h5 ( 2 out of 3 depending on winds, and courses conditions ) & 6I….PW ErEf, Montréal
Great stuff. These clubs are the hardest for me to hit. Going to try these tips. Does the "hands low" swing thought work for irons too? Is it different for driver?
I’m going to be honest here but your videos sounds like clickbaity but man what you teach here in your channel actually works! I struggle to hit my wood to the point that I rarely touch it but this video after watching it and trying it out made me hit my woods far better than my driver with minimal effort. Thank you
Awesome video. I do the same setup as per your video here with the slight side bend with the ball slightly forward. I thought that promotes a slightly upward strike while brushing the sole off the ground. I hit my 3 wood with baby draw and high launch like this. Before adding the side bend it was difficult for me to hit my 3 wood but I thought it was because i had a downward strike. Is it really true that downward strike is still favored for the FW and hybrids?
@@Gilesgillgolf I was there around 10 years ago and really enjoyed it there! We are booked for a golf trip there in June 2025….. How are the courses there now ? Are they in good condition? PS Thank you for your wonderful content by the way …. You always help make it all SO much easier to understand !🙏🏼
@ that’s amazing to hear! I didn’t actually play the courses but they looked in fantastic condition! I’m glad you’re enjoying the content & finding value in it!
To be clear, when I tee up the ball when hitting with my 5 wood, I swing at it as it it was on the ground, and not as if it was a ball teed up for a driver. Correct?
Do you know if I should hit more like iron shot or driver? Or both If it’s both would you elaborate what part would be more closer to driver or iron? I hit 4 iron 200 and driver 250 average but due to the low confidence of wood I just don’t use wood and instead just don’t try 2 on. Score is always 80s but now I want to break average 70s I ve done once in my life Please help!
Hands come back high at impact because you’re pushing away from the ground. As stated in the video the low hands feeling is for shaft parallel to the ground where you will clear see the feeling of the hands being low. After this position the hands technically move up
An issue often not talked about is course condition especially the fairway grass. In many daily fee courses the fairways are often cut higher and in later summer grass gets quite thin. Fairway woods just not easy to hit unlike the plush fairways I see on youtube.
The answer isn’t a one size fits all. Less grass you’d hit more down. More grass then it depends on if the ball is sitting up or down. Is the grass growing into your or way from you
The low point is not under the lead armpit 😂 that defies physics. If you set the ball under your armpit you’re not catching it with a 0 attack angle are you. It’s going to be an upward attack.
That’s actually incorrect & a common mistake amateurs make. If your ball position is under your left armpit & your hitting up then you will be falling back off the ball. The data we capture on gears proves this so. I only deal in proven facts so hopefully this has changed your mind 👍🏻
Dude. fairwoods are easier to hit. OK. But moving the CG Back in a golf club head, causes a lower launch angle and lower ball flight. That is simple physics. Fairway woods fly higher because the face "trampoline" compresses the ball and launches it more upward. Think of how high an 8 degree driver flies. It definitely launches way higher than 8 degrees. More like 35 or 40 degrees. THAT is the Face launch effect. Learn some simple physics and you will understand how to hit a golf ball much better. Just Sayin.
Incorrect, a cg that back increase spin & launch. Every club manufacturer in the states this & I trust them. A cg higher causes the ball to fly lower. Trampoline affect is to do with ball speed & not launch. Bulge and roll contributes more to launch than trampoline affect. You’re confusing a lot of different factors like spin, lift, cg, speed & strike location here

Great points!! On longer par4/5s, a 4/5H is a great option from the fairway. I rarely would use a 3/5W on the fairway, just on the tee if needed. 👍
Sounds like a great strategy/system!
new to your channel after seeing you w Eric Cogorno. Many thanks for a great lesson!!
Thanks for the sub! Eric is great so I’m glad you enjoyed our collaboration
Great vid Giles. Why do I some times turn over my 3 or 5 wood from the fairway?
Lots of reasons. But your face will be closing down
Another enjoyable video. I’m having trouble hitting my hybrids weak high right but not problematic with fairway woods. Thoughts welcome 😊🙏
I hope this helps!
Great stuff. These clubs are the hardest for me to hit. Going to try these tips. Does the "hands low" swing thought work for irons too? Is it different for driver?
Works for all clubs
Thanks for the VDO. Some really good tips. I was just wondering, Why is your back so much cross over the top?
From an old injury & it’s easy to shallow the club from this position
Send this to a buddy who needs to learn how to hit their hybrids & fairway woods better!
So send it to myself
As someone who doesn’t hit the ball as far as he used too I can say that these clubs are key
Amazing Harry! Hope this helps with your distance
Got a 5w 3h and took out my 3w, 3i,& 4i. Much better but still room for improvement. This vid should help! Thx
Glad it helped!
Good tips, can’t wait to try this, Iv’e had the ball too far forward.
Good luck! Hope this helps

My swing thought was to brush the ground lightly before the ball.
Every tour pro hits down on the hybrids & 3 wood. Only exception is if they have it on a big high tee
Love your tips!
Thank you Tom!

I cannot hit long irons so this is great

I can't hit hybrids at all. My 5 wood works well for me about 1 time out of 20. My 3 and 4 irons work so, so (180 -190 yards) about 3 times out of 5.
@ have you been fit? How old are the hybrids/5 wood you’re using?
A well tuned 4/5 wood is the greatest tool in the bag.
Exactly that!
I play a 13.5 3 wood and a 16 and 20 hybrid because my next club is the 5 iron!
Love it!

You hit it more like an iron
My 5 wood is my best club
Amazing!
Decending down with fairway metal but hit up on driver?
You got it!
Wouldn't the longer shaft of the 5W make it more difficult than a 4iron?
Yes but the whole point is the head had far more technology to make strike easier which is the special part of these clubs
How do you hit your hybrids out of the rough?
I have a whole video on this already
@ do you have a link to the video?
@ Search for my hybrid videos 👍🏻
Wow
Thank you
i can't play w/o my 4 iron...I need it on 185 yd par 3's.

Genius right
The biggest reminder is don’t try to crush the ball just swing easy !
Good point
Tell Rory that he crushes everything
We’ll try man. We’ll try.
Skip a rock
I like that

Hover ! Guaranted divot past the ball and no hitting fat anymore
Love the hover
No, you don't need a wider stance. As wider stance makes the transfer of weight to the back foot on the backswing more difficult.
Wider stance is relative to standard irons
