I was talking to my brother and he told me that he was practically addicted to hotels and went all the time, perhaps 30-50 times in the past year. I was so confused why he did that and how he afforded it, it's not like he's making six figures. Eventually I figured out that he was talking about Paper Mario and he meant he was going to Toad Houses.

The most overpowered aspect of sleep in video games is that characters can just go to sleep almost instantly without even trying. One of the biggest flaws with the human body is that falling asleep can't be done voluntarily, you have to lie down and hope your body decides to go to sleep.

    • @_-Lx-_
      @_-Lx-_ 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Very relatable, I hate how I'd always just to be told "Just make yourslef sleep! Count sheep!" and etc as a kid by people who didn't understand this.
The most we can do is make ourselves comfortable and relaxed, and practice sleep hygine and etc alongside that have our bodies be comfortable that way and more easily let us sleep by themselves.
As someone following an actual sleep expert's instruction currently, it's so much more nuanced than anyone ever tried to teach me as a kid.

Don't forget the Sims, where it doesn't do anything except restore your energy bar. And if the energy bar runs out before you get to a bed, you just pass out on the floor until the bar refills a tiny amount.
It is a tiny bit useful in the sense that it can make the game fast-forward at a speed only possible when the sims are sleeping or at work. But that only works if every sim in the household is sleeping or working at the same time.

    • @DrRank
      @DrRank 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

And that sleep can be interrupted if other needs run too low - for example, if the bladder meter gets too low, the Sim will wake up and run to the toilet.

you should also talk about the game of life.
the sleeping mechanics are really crazy. for example. it can improve your memory, driving skills, mental health, cure soreness and if you train yourself for the lucid dream method, you can basically go into creative mode, play around and practice for abilities for one whole hour. it's a shame the developers haven't implemented a multiplayer mode... at least... if it's not in the game....

Here’s a game I’m surprised wasn’t mentioned, Mario and Luigi dream team. While it’s mostly like the other titles, sometimes in the game you go to the dream world through Luigi. In this dream world in battles, you get only 1 turn instead of 2 but you’re also stronger due to how dreamy Luigi works. There’s also luigiary attacks where you attack with multiple Luigi’s. There’s also giant battles where Mario becomes the assistant and he needs to rest a few turns after u use him, and some areas where you mess with real Luigi and the dream world changes whenever you mess with him. Also the final Antasma fight and the final Bowser fights are cool.

I’m planning on making an rpg at some point and I think it would be a funny gag where the benches heal you all the way but the inns heal you by 1 point and the inn keeper say something like “what were you expecting a full heal? Go find a bench or something.”

i would argue that its because "design isn't canon", like you said, beds healing you is a gameplay benefit but that doesn't HAVE to mean that beds actually heal you in those canons

I'd say a neat case of sleep mechanics is in Don't Starve. As a survival game focused on difficulty it's not too forgiving with resources.
Your three main resources to manage is:
    Health
If you get bonked, bit, burnt, etcetera, it decreases, hit zero and ya die.
    Hunger
Goes down over time, eat food to restore it, food does spoil though, so plan ahead.
    Sanity
Lowers in stressful or frightening situations, lower it gets and your life gets harder, like being hunted by shadow beasts.
Managing all three, among the other stuff like temperature and the night is tough.
Your character doesn't need to sleep, you can theoretically survive hundreds of days without sleeping. But, you can craft bed rolls and tents to sleep, skipping the night, recovering Health and Sanity, all for the price of some hunger. Although unlike your helpful crock-pots or chests they break after enough uses.
*Sleeping is a sacrifice you must consider well, is it a worthy investment?*
The most interesting part to me about this sleep is how it's taken away!
Wickerbottom is a character you unlock a bit late, she has a headstart with crafting recipes, higher max sanity and plenty of helpful tomes. If you can spare the materials her books are quite useful, such as speeding the growth of crops or putting creatures to sleep.
However, read the tomes or eat spoiled food and you lose sanity. All while dealing with the sanity damage everyone else needs to manage.
You might think to sleep but she has insomnia!
She can still be forced asleep by traps and attacks but she cannot sleep via bed rolls and tents. So you'll have to find other solutions to that problem.
Don't Starve uses realism quite well, it feels less like a chore and more like a challenge to solve. Sleep is simply another decently executed idea in a list of many and I think that's pretty cool!

Great video which really shows how much we take sleeping in video games for granted, and how making it make sense is basically an unexplored concept. The first game that adds depth to sleeping (in regards to healing) is going to feel very unique and get huge immersion points.

In Bully, sleeping is actually a need, you don't heal from sleeping as far as i remember, but you MUST sleep in time, otherwise you'll get tired over time. And you can only do it once in a day, but it's mandatory, and you'll pass out by 4AM

You might like *Catalcysm: Dark Days Ahead* , which is a game which inspired project zomboid. Getting to sleep in that game can be a real struggle at times, and insomnia, drug withdrawals and pain from various sources can make it even more difficult. You can use sleep meds (or flu medicine) to get to sleep, but they have a slight addictive quality to them and getting addicted means you'll need to start relying on them to get to bed at a decent time. Sleep helps you heal and mend broken limbs, but at a level much closer to real life than most games. You won't walk off a broken bone in less than a week of proper sleep and nourishment (and you'll have to craft a splint, too!)
In the late-game your character can mutate into various human-animal hybrids due to radioactive exposure or by more hands-on means after delving through abandoned laboratories, and if you evolve fur or gills you'll have an easier time sleeping in the cold or even in the water respectively.

In Sea Of Stars, you'll only heal half your HP when you rest. So you heal the other half by eating the meals you cook, making you not hoard all your healing items as much.

I like how sleeping does work in Stardew Valley and Monster Hunter. Though Monster Hunter is ridiculous for recovering health quick, saving make sense. Don't mind sleeping for leveling up too like in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Fallout 3/New Vegas after gaining enough EXP. One of the things I can think is interesting and different is a Minecraft mod that let you explore in a dream, and where MGS 3 has Snake dreaming about this Devil May Cry like segment. Definitely a lot could be explored. Ideal animation for sleeping can be charming like with Super Mario.

Implementing obstacles to going to sleep in a game like insomnia would make for a fun mechanic if implemented well. Maybe having to do a mini game while you sleep and messing up means you get a bad night's rest which mean not restoring to full health. Good night.
