    Honestly, Portal 2 is more a ballpark sequel than a DLC sequel and it should've be in that category, because it doesn't actually reused the assets from the original game, uses different textures and models to match the new tone and style of the sequel, having a two player co-op, having a heavy emphasize on story, introducing new characters like Wheatley and Cave Johnson, having three times the length of Portal 1, having variety of environments, introducing new mechanics like Deadly Lasers and Tractor Beam, and much more that just gels.

    Honorable mention type of sequel "Sequel Displacement" according to Tv Tropes. for example like Street Fighter 2 is very popular and memorable than first Street Fighter games in 1987 (or Fighting Street in Turbografx CD), and also Metal Gear Solid on PS1 is very known than first two games on MSX

    For what its worth: while the main numbered Resident Evil games were slowly shifting more towards the action/shooter genre, you at least still had titles like the RE Revelations games. So its not like fans weren't getting that horror experience, although I do think its good that RE eventually shifted towards the 1st person horror genre and was willing to further experiment.
    My point mostly is that you've also got fans in the community who did like RE5-6 and felt like they were a natural evolution from RE4. You could argue that this split in a fandom is a bad thing, but I really don't think it is. People can like whatever they want, and as long as they're still fun games, i don't see it as an issue (especially if a company is still catering to the other sorts of fans, but even then, you can still go back and enjoy the older games).
    You have the split in the Sonic fandom for example between fans of the Classic 2D formula, the Adventure/06 formula and the boost formula, and you don't see that much infighting in the community because most the people in the Sonic fandom now are grown adults and know that fighting over this shit is kinda ridiculous. What matters at the end of the day is whether or not the game is fun and well made, and while a game might not be for you, it could be for someone else so long as its still well designed. That and Sega at least tries to still cater to fans of the classic 2d formula, as well as Frontiers seemed like an attempt to cater to fans of the Adventure era of games. It also helps that Sega is pretty lenient towards fan works, but that's a whole other discussion.

      Another factor to the shift towards action was that people thought the slow pace horor and fixed cameras were becoming outdated for the series at that time.

    6:23 I'm not certain if it's a well-known fact or not, but Kirby's Avalanche is like that because it's actually from another series. It's a modification of the Japan-only Super Puyo Puyo, with Kirby characters replacing the Madō Monogatari ones (hence why Kirby talks.) They even share some of the same PAR codes (80FFF002 for the extended options menu, for instance).

    I think a good example of this is Batman Arkham Asylum and Batman Arkham Knight.
    They used the same game assets for Arkham City and Origins. It got boring seeing the same visual style for 3 games straight.
    Then they blew our minds with Arkham Knight which still looks better than most games today

    Another thing you could touch on would be three types of sequel stories:
    1. Remake sequels: where you follow the same set of characters through basically the same story. It doesn't really pick up where the previous game left off, and feels more like the same game but in an alternate universe than a direct follow up to the original. The mainline Mario games are a great example.
    2. Continuing sequels: where you follow the same characters on a continuation of their last adventure. It's a "true" sequel in every sense of the word. Think of the Kingdom Hearts series, for example.
    3. Reboot sequels: this time it's new characters on a new adventure. There might be references to what happened in the previous games, but you can usually still understand what's going on even if you're a complete newcomer to the series. A good example might be the jump from Persona 4 -> Persona 5.

    as someone who doesn't want a franchise to be 1 specific thing (it's fine if it is but i won't critisize it for being different) i would have these:
    - DLC sequel: the differents in my version is that i sometimes consider DLC to also be a sequel (Donkey Kong Adventure from Mario + Rabbids)
    - direct sequel: it has a similair gameplay style and is likely to reuse assets (Super Mario 3D World & Super Mario Galaxy 2)
    - different sequel: this is where i count the intire franchise as being sequels (any franchise with more than 1 game)
    the Mario franchise proves that it really doesn't matter what kind of game you make for an existing IP

    Strongly disagree that Portal 2 is a DLC sequel. Not a single asset from the original game is reused. Even in the reused test chambers, all of the textures and models are redone to match the new tone of the game and the game is way more detailed in it's environments overall. Also it's like three times the length of Portal 1

    Jak II is a sequel that goes 180 degree and change everything that the first Jak and Daxter is known for. The tone and atmosphere is much more darker and edgier, it takes place in a dystopian future, it has a much more serious story and despite the fact it has the same controls and physics as the first one, Jak II abandoned the collect-A-Thon genre in favour of a third-person GTA style gameplay.
    Although this game divided the fanbase (some prefer Jak 1's collect-A-Thon gameplay and atmosphere) the game was a masterpiece. I've never seen another franchise that drastically change the gameplay right after the first one and ends up being successful.

  • @axelprino
    @axelprino 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I can't fully agree with this, specially with the names used. DLC is too modern of a term for some of these games, a more correct word would be "expansion" since it better describes the idea behind what you're talking about, also the name "stand alone expansion" is often already used to refer to direct sequels that make little to no modifications to the formula of the previous game in the series instead focusing on just offering more content so there's precedent for using it in favor of DLC. But the most common name is "direct sequel", and I think it represents the iterative nature behind said sequels pretty well.
    "Ball-park sequel" is fine I guess, a bit too vague but functional, but "are you even a sequel?" kinda throws practicality out of the window for the sake of being attention grabbing. Why not call them something like "sequels in name only", sounds more descriptive, at least to me. It's also not much of a valid criticism to series that slowly changed over many years and multiple games like Resident Evil, you can get that impression if you jump from RE1 to RE6 but you're quite obviously (and likely intentionally) missing a lot of context there, context given by all the in-between games that changed a lot more gradually. The Bit.Trip series is also a tad questionable as an example since it started as more of an anthology of purposefully very different types of games that told the story of a single character, and later became a more traditional series in response to the success of Bit.Trip Runner. So why not use a much more well known example that most people would agree with like how the first and second Zelda games significantly changed gameplay, and perspective, despite Zelda 2 being a direct sequel story-wise. Also Sonic Unleashed is a much more evident example of drastically modifying a formula when compared to any of the previous 3D Sonic games, by comparison Sonic Heroes was just adding more mechanics on top of a preexisting mold and visually representing it through having three characters on screen.
    I get the intentions behind this video but it just feels like you had a foregone conclusion right from the start and then forced a narrative that would fit the categorization you came up with even when this approach to classification had a number of obvious flaws, it's interesting and entertaining, but not accurate enough to hold any water. I do believe that it could be polished into a much more robust argument tho.

    Sometimes a game comes out that is a subversive retelling of the original. Could be a ballpark sequel or a "wait you're a sequel" (because now it's a shooter or something).
    Like the first game was about an isolated village with a cult that becomes monsters. The next game is also about an isolated village with the same monsters, but the villagers were trying to stop it (and taking the wrong approach).

    6:00 I think this is a bad example. The main line KH games are- and likely always will be fast paced action games as described. Melody of Memory is a spin-off, and those can do whatever they want. You even touch on spin-offs later in the video. I mean that would be like comparing Final Fantasy Theatherythm to the main series and saying: Oh, I guess they decided to ditch the turn based stuff. You could however say that about something like FF16 which IS a main line game and decided to piss of fans by completely abandoning the J-RPG genre.

      What that?

    • @ladala99
      @ladala99 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@dusty0896 When a game is directly inspired by/takes lessons from a different IP, not being of that IP usually only because of not being developed by the rights holders. Like Stardew Valley being a spiritual sequel to Harvest Moon or Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling being a spiritual sequel to the early Paper Mario. They're basically DLC sequels or Ballpark sequels without actually having the same characters. It's hard to define this though since games like this are only considered spiritual sequels if they're actually good - otherwise they're deemed as ripoffs. And even if it is good, it might just be part of the same genre.
      I've also seen developers call games "spiritual successors" to other games they've made. Like Insomniac calling Ratchet and Clank a spiritual successor to Spyro. While they are slightly different genres (Spyro=collectathon platformer; Ratchet=action platformer), they share developers, tone, and the platforming and story progress act largely the same.
      So TL;DR - either different developers but extremely similar game (and good), or same developers and style of game but different IP.

      Please name one DLC with the scope of TotK, introducing entirely new gameplay mechanics while replacing the old ones and replacing every line of dialogue!
      A DLC ADDS new content to a game, a sequel REPLACES content from the prior entry with something new.

      I didn't know that DLC stuff would include huge mechanics like building all kinds of stuff with a brand new power, or straight up removing some elements and changing how some global elements work.
      You'd think that stuff would all be sold for something separate.

  • @vidux6289
    @vidux6289 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I would not call them "DLC sequels", rather "Deluxe Version" as in "Same, but better" (TotK). You could argue a lot of them are also "Same, but more" (Vice City) or even "Same, but different" (Majora's Mask).
    "Ballpark Sequels" is saying nothing, to me. It's just a new iteration of a franchise. Is NFS Carbon the sequel to Most Wanted ? Story wise yes. But the progression system, the types of races, the interaction with the police, boss battles, ally system, the way the cars handle, the types of cars, so many things are different, it's a whole different game. At what point do you get out of the ballpark ?

      Wouldn't that make Mario Kart 8 Deluxe a sequel?

    • @vidux6289
      @vidux6289 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Mario Kart is an exemple of "Same, but better". Each game plays the same, hence why it's very accessible. Sure each iteration adds a new mechanic (bikes, gliding, anti-gravity), fine tunes handling, re-work tracks, but it is essentially the same game. I would say that 8 is the sequel to 7 yes. But Deluxe is a DLC and a port at the same time. It only adds content that existed previously and doesn't change the way the game is played like the jump from 7 to 8 did. Hence why it's not numbered I'd say. It's still MK 8.

      @@vidux6289 But if MK8DX is a DLC/port, what the hell is the Booster Course Pass?! A DLC for a DLC? Is the BCP adding new content to MK8 or MK8DX?
      Btw, I would argue that not every MK entry plays the same. I don't think the handling of MK8 compares to that of Super Mario Kart or Super Circuit. And Tour is special too because it's being controlled on a touchscreen. You could also argue that the Arcade GP entries play very differently from the rest of the series both in controls and gameplay (long and wide tracks with few and wide turns, hundreds of different items, 2 lap races and so on).

    • @tictactoecraft
      @tictactoecraft 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Doktario_Mystario I meant by his definition of a sequel (adding more/better content), MK8DX could be easily considered as a sequel, even though it more likely is/was simply a port. It's not easy to determine what MK8DX exactly is, especially now that the BCP exists. It could be a port, a sequel or even a remaster.
      So according to you, MK8DX is a port that turned into a sequel because it got enough new content added that it might as well be considered its own entry?
