That and with the failure rates of both the PS3 and Xbox 360 made the generation even more intense to determine which console failure rate was worse.

      Yes, This!
It truly was the PEAK gaming era with the years coming up to it. If hindsight is 20/20 then here is what an optimal household looks like for a middle-class home that likes gaming. Just image you're born in 1995 with a Dad who was a Gameboy/NES Gamer.

As a hypothetical, Start out your Gaming History with a cheap PS1 and a treasure trove of games. Could be modchipped.
Your dad loves it, plus you get an N64 due to the recent Pokemon craze, alongside the new Gameboy Color. You're having a blast in early 2000s. When the PS2 is released grab one, it's a DVD player, and it plays your old PS1 games, so sell the PS1. Then in a year or two, get a new PC that runs Windows Xp, it's good for many things, including games and to your surprise some emulation. Sell your N64 as it's getting old and it's emulation seems to be coming along. You're enjoying your PS2 and PC, sell your GBC and get a new DS Lite. It plays GBA and DS games, stokes your Retro Feels, and has wicked long battery life in such small size.
Now it's 2005 and your PC is showing age, but instead you get the new Xbox 360. Project G Racing looks unreal for such a low price. You keep the 360 well ventilated and clean, it doesn't suffer any Red Ring Death. You've also had a blast with the DS Lite but decided to get the new PSP Brite, it's awesome. You're in the future now. Not long after you grab a PS3, it plays BluRays which is what you want for the Main TV. You keep the PS3 clean and well ventilated, also avoiding the YLOD. The PS3 also natively plays PS2 games, so you sell your PS2. You're happy, you've made some small upgrades to your home PC, it's going strong. You snag a Used Wii and you're a part of the craze. The younger kids love it, as well as the mums and grans. It's also got backwards compatibility with GameCube games that you buy for cheap, just like your old PS2 Games running on the PS3. Now that LCD is much cheaper you get a Second TV for your bedroom, and move the Xbox 360 there, with an Internet connection.
By now life is good, but you want to refresh some of your electronics. You start by selling your PSP Brite. You modded it, and it served you tremendously, but you have a phone now, so you jump on the newly discounted new3DS. Immediately you get to relive some of your DS childhood as well as new collection of 3DS games. Also you want to get on Windows 7, with your Desktop PC is showing its age badly. The new PC is very affordable and you choose good components (i7-3770k, r9-290, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD). It's so much faster, and can now do alot of emulation including PSP, PS2, and GameCube, and also the Wii. You also get rid of the Wii, it's served it's purpose and the gimmick is meh now.
You've looked at the WiiU and you don't want it. So you sell your hot, heavy, loud PS3 and go for a PS3 Slim with a Big HDD for the same price. You'll enjoy this in your bedroom with the exclusive games and new movies. You decide to get rid of the Xbox 360, now there is an empty slot in the living room. You fill that up with the PS4. You're missing your Xbox 360 Games and Xbox exclusives, but the PC keeps you hooked. You're about to go to University, and you decide to splurge on a new phone (ZTE Axon 7), and Build a Brand New Windows10 PC (r7-3700, GTX-1080Ti, 32GB RAM, 1TB nVme, 4TB HDD). You also sell your PS3, and soon after the new3DS, both can run on your PC. You grab a NSwitch for the hype but don't hop on the PS4 Pro, your PC is over-powered compared to Sony's console. You also don't care for the Xbox, 360, or One consoles, as their Games play on your PC. The prices for things start to go bad. Just as the pandemic hits, you snag a PS5 and enjoy your PS4 games on it. That's right you've sold your PS4 now. Your NSwitch is getting mixed results with you, and you decide to sell it. But what's this, now you've got a new handheld.
So right now it's the latest Valve SteamDeck OLED in your backpack, the PS5 on your TV, and your ageing Gaming PC serving you well. You're enjoying your Samsung S10+ with Razer JungleCat when you read this comment. You also managed to upgrade your PC cheaply (r9-3800x3D, rx-6800, 64GB, 4TB SSD), again it plays so many games.
And now you're reminiscing about the simpler days, back when your house had 3 Consoles (360, PS3, Wii) and a PC. That was the PEAK gaming era.

"Wii games have colors other than brown."
IMHO the most important takeaway from the 7th gen console war. For the life of me, I have no idea why any game developers decided to have their games' palettes be only brown, gray, and black. Games like Final Fantasy 6 and 7 showed that you can tell a heavy, poignant story while using color so it's nice to look at. I always remind people that Cloud wore purple. Not brown. Not gray. Not black. Purple.
And I know Cloud wears black now, but if these game designers were paying attention, they would have seen how many people criticized Advent Children's character redesigns for boringly having every character wear black.

It isn't that important. Color palletes are the least important thing when playing any game, the game in question can look colorful and play like garbage but of course, it's not like the people who played those "brown" military shooters actually played them.

By the end of the generation PS3 was my main, mostly due to lack of regional locks and the generous PS Plus of the era
Somehow I ended up Xbox One only from 2013 onwards, having a lot of platforms is tiresome to choose where to play

Looking back in time, I've always felt that the 7th generation was the peak of the "war." Sega was knocked out of the race during the last generation with the introduction of the Xbox, and I think that really scared Nintendo and Sony, who very much needed to keep making consoles in order to survive. Consequently, the consoles just weren't made to last, they were genuinely "soldiers" of the generation. My Nintendo 64 will outlive me. By comparison, I was on my second Wii by the time the Wii U came out. I have a professor who worked at Microsoft when the 360 first came out, he says that they were well aware of the red ring of death before the console ever launched, but they needed something to compete, so they just tanked the cost of reimbursement. With the benefit of hindsight and the relatively calm game console world we're in these days, I think it's wild just how accurate the term "console war" was for 7th gen.

This era was a really rough one for my RPG/adventure/platformer loving self, and I admit I spend most of it playing PS2, DS or PSP, occasionally popping my head out for the more traditionally "game-y" releases on Wii.
I eventually got a 360 at the beginning of 2011 and a PS3 for Christmas that same year, and after the PS3 became the big RPG hub near the end of the generation, with exclusives like Tales of Xillia, the Disgaea games and some cool niche titles, it eventually became my favorite of the three.
It does make me sad that Xbox never really recovered from the horrible presentation that revealed the Xbox One

Great video essay. I think the seventh generation is the only one that had my household host all major consoles. My brother went with the Wii whereas I settled for the PS3. I remember buying it in mid-2007, but I only started playing it extensively in '08 when more exclusives and multiplatform hits came out. Had lots of fun with it, even though the latter category of games tended to perform and look worse on PS3.
Then in summer '08, I decided to buy a 360 alongside a copy of Bad Company and Halo 3. My experience with it was very positive, to the point where I asked myself if I should've gone with Team Xbox the year before. Because my 360 was at my summer house, however, most of my teenage years were spent gaming on PS3.
After graduating from high school, I went back to PC gaming and thought that'd be the end of my console days. This past May, however, I chose to buy a used launch-model 360 to indulge in some nostalgia and help myself get through a rough patch. I still have it on my home theater counter as I write this, and I look forward to booting it up again to play the likes of The Club, Lost Planet, Devil May Cry 4, and Tales of Vesperia.
TL;DR The seventh gaming generation brought me tons of joy and inspired me to pursue a career in game development. Good times, indeed.

Agreed. I still see Sony and Xbox fanboys trying their best make console wars a thing again. But gaming is much afforable than before and you can own more than one console. Back then a console lived and died by their exclusives and a lot of games show up in different consoles and services nowadays. So it's a bit strange.
I guess there's an argument if you're interested only in AAA games or first party games.

    • @ToonyTails
      @ToonyTails หลายเดือนก่อน +9

@@ajzn97Yeah but (at least in my opinion) you shouldn’t buy a new console JUST for new exclusives. You should get it with the mindset that this is a replacement/upgrade for your old one. Especially for the consoles that are backwards compatible like the Wii, Wii U, all the DS consoles (except the DSi), the PS2,3 and 5 and most modern Xbox consoles. Because then you have all the benefits of the older consoles now with faster load times and overall improved performance.

Frankly? Nintendo won this battle (and technically the war since Microsoft is now considering moving to PC almost entirely while Sony is starting to kinda stagnate technologically?).
They got a major sales lead, and the only drawback was their "kiddy" imagery (which tbh they've always kinda had? Most of their major IPs are either cartoony or flipflops between cartoony and realistic styles on the regular, the Wii being a tipping point hardly changed much since they were already struggling with the hardcore market way back with the SNES against SEGA's MegaDrive), meaning they haven't really lost anything they had (arguably we as their consumers did, but not Nintendo themselves).
They thought outside the box of "HD graphics and hardcore games" and it paid off really damn well.

11:06 There was a technical issue I kept having with my Wii as a matter of fact. Really frustrating. I forget when it started but Gamecube discs would have extreme difficulty reading in the Wii which really sucked when I was playing "Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door" which you can only save when you find those rainbow colored Save Blocks. The game would work, but then suddenly an error screen would show causing the game to be unplayable even though the audio continued to play. Weirdly enough though it said I can take the disc out and clean it and put it back in and it would work again but for like a few seconds so basically even though it would briefly reload where I am it pretty much didn't work.
Sometime later the same thing actually happened with Wii discs. Yes, now suddenly I couldn't even play Wii games without a problem. Something was seriously wrong with the disc reader. At least I still had a Gamecube at the time and I simply just continued Thousand Year Door on that. But with the issues with the disc reader on my Wii, all I could play were the games I downloaded from the Wii Shopping Channel.

  • @realkingofantarctica

The reason the 7th Generation was the last console war is because it was the last era where each console actually offered something unique to its competitors. Nintendo had an emphasis on accessibility and experimentation with motion controls. Microsoft doubled down on online gaming and more mature experiences that, despite almost all being shooters, had their own identity. And Sony was a solid blend of the two, having ambitious exclusive games that balanced Eastern and Western design philosophies.
Compare this to the 8th Generation, where there was no substantial reason to pick an Xbox One over a PS4, or now the 9th Generation where Nintendo is practically in their own league as Sony and especially Microsoft are gradually getting phased out by PC, and it's no wonder that the 7th fet like a war. Wars aren't wars if the sides don't even know they're fighting, and if one side is too weak, then it's just a massacre.

In the end, I think the Console wars were just meant to die off as graphical fidelity plateaued and companies like Nintendo started to dominate the Industry again because they left the console wars rat race Sony and Microsoft have been fighting over for 20 years behind. It doesn’t matter who won now because both the current Xbox and Playstation ecosystems are barely distinguishable from each other beyond Sea of Thieves on one, and Spider-Man on the other.
In the end, Nintendo won with variety and making gaming for EVERYONE, without compromising the story or depth of a video game. It’s why people look back on the 360 and PS3 as a sweaty, frankly cringe era where it was about graphics and specs and not actually about the games quality.

I've been saying it for years and now more and more people are starting to realise, this was the best generation for video games. Not only for the console wars but for the handheld market too with the DS and PSP.
I believe the 8th generation, if you include all the hardware together, handheld and console, everything sold over 500m pieces of hardware. With about half of this coming from both the Wii & DS combo.
The 8th Generation did okay if you include Switch sales as part of the 8th gen, i personally consider it 8.5 but for arguments sake, we cut the Switches sales off at January 2021, lets say it falls under 8th generation for that time period, Switch, 3DS, WiiU, PS4 and Xbox One i believe sold over 450m.
Unfortunately we're nearly half way into the 9th generation and it isn't looking good at all, when you factor in hardware sales, theres just a lot less dedicated gaming devices now and im including the Steam Deck in all this too, if things keep at this pace, even if Nintendo comes swinging hard, we would be lucky to get 350m total hardware sales.
This downward trend is bad news for anyone who fancies themselves a gamer.

I personally believe the 360 gets 2nd mostly because of the fact that it entered the ring a year early, giving it time to develop a catalog of games that released earlier than they did on other consoles, and the fact that they went all out in damage control when the Red Ring of Death incident happened.

Ya know the days of 2 or more companies actually competing against each other when they are at their best is the thing of the past. Playstation Executives waited for both their competitors to be at their worst and decided to just declare themselves the winner by default. Sony has dick rided both the year and the concept of 2013 for a whole decade.
The exact words from Sony Incorporated when Killzone fell off was: "Fuck Multiplayer" at the end of 2016. PS Plus has been irrelevant since 2017. Conspiracy is that the whole company was suffering from 2006 Financial PTSD whenever an exclusive shooter was even conceptualized. The Last of Us Factions Sequel has been cancelled so many times even I gave up on waiting for it. Online Functionally for any of their first party titles became extinct for 7 years and I think people are getting sick of it.
I have noticed that Sony has been prioritizing westernized exclusives with a repetitive formula. Another Dual Protagonist Story Driven Game with way better reviews than it actually deserves. It’s not Single Player because there’s "2 Main Characters". Playstation Executives have told every Gaming News Outlet/Publication to repetitively say the phrase "Story Driven" so many times until the words felt like they were being shoved up our asses. It seems that every company involved in gaming has a blatant flaw based on management and design that they pretend doesn't exist. If your not proficient in creating something just be honest and transparent about it. Why is this difficult?
