Limited Run Games is burning retro games onto CD-R and selling them to collectors! It sounds too insane to be true but Limited Run Games just shipped D's Diner Director's Cut and the original D for 3DO to fans and when they opened their brand new Limited Run Games release up....they found FIVE burnt CD-R Discs for the entire game! Needless to say this is the cheapest retro gaming disappointment in a very long time! Limited Run Games review incoming and if you were wondering are Limited Run Games worth it....this should answer that! Limited Run Games CDR time! Because this should def be some Limited Run controversy!
Let alone the fact that SOME 3DO console variants struggle to read CD-R discs entirely but read pressed discs / replicated discs fine! So Limited Run Games sold fans games they cannot actually play in their original 3DO consoles.
Kenji Eno deserves better than this and D and D's Diner Director's Cut deserves better than this but most importantly PAYING CUSTOMERS of Limited Run Games deserve better than this! Nothing short of a full refund / full replacement copy with replicated discs will make this right.

Absolutely ridiculous, BUT also a sign that LRG knows their audience: Scalpers who'll never actually open this stuff. At some point they may just cut costs and go ahead and resort to the ol' "Stereo box full of bricks" trick.

Quick update. Looks like limited run release an email to its customers and they're saying they're working with the distributor to make pressed versions of this game now. Only when this issue gains traction did they care. What a joke.

@@goatbone It's one thing when a company has a defective product and corrects it swiftly, shit happens. This on the other hand is malicious cost cutting. They did this because they didn't think anyone would notice since this is a very niche game that isn't going to sell many copies and a lot of LRG's products end up in the hands of scalpers and shelf collectors who will never open it. They are correcting the issue because they got caught doing something underhanded, not because of some oversight or unforeseen defect.
Is it better than nothing? Yes. Is it in any way worthy of praise given this circumstance? No. I mean they probably produced less than a 1000 of these and I bet they didn't even have a distributor for it. They probably just had some dude in the office with a CD burner bang these out then sent them to a local printer for the artwork on top the discs.

I've been calling them Limited Scam for years.
I also know a thing or two about CD-Rs since I burn tons for Dreamcast. They Cheaped out. CMC Pros and Ritek are what I use as they don't have cheap dyes. TDK does.

A 600 pack of Riteks the ones I use are a little under $150 on Amazon. 2 Orders would make that money back.
Of course they could also not cheap out and just press the discs
This release reminded me of the half ass Metalocalypse Complete Season that wasn't even in Blu Ray format, was $90 and the first run of it didn't even have the hour special that basically everybody wanted it for.
Then the kicker was that they preorders ship out anyway then delisted the product from stores to fix the bad batches and someone not even part of the distribution company informed customers that they can receive a replacement disc. Wasn't advertised anywhere so a lot of people got screwed over.

Kenji Eno as an artist would be mad. His games were art and ahead of their time. It's a slap in the face that such low quality was allowed by LRG.

I am, unfortunately, one of those people who actually bought this game. I can confirm that all the discs are burned CD-R's. What a damn joke, even companies who make unlicensed games for other consoles like PCE Works for the PC Engine make pressed copies that have high quality discs and packaging. This has been so disappointing. I did send a ticket requesting a return to Limited Run, but I highly doubt they'll even do anything about it.

I think you've miss-understood the meaning of the name Limited Run.
It refers to the the much more limited life-span of CD-Rs. You only have a limited amount of time to use the discs.
It's basically high concept art that goes over most peoples heads.

I'm glad everyone is speaking about this. Limited Run has some really shady practices. Artificial scarcity and horrible customer service. They act like a humble little game company carrying the flag for game preservation but they do things I would expect from EA or some shady Chinese company

The moment the founders sold off the company to Embracer and quit (not saying much because the COO especially was a weirdo), this was going to be a sinking ship. Limited Run is going to go away before long because it's probably in Embracer's best interest (and platform holders) to have their purchases be digital versus physical sadly.

Limited Run quality has taken a huge dive over the last few years. Not only that, but prices on many of their collectors versions are absolutely mental.
I've got a few pre-orders with them from last year. I've had issues with LR over the last few years, but this is definitely the final nail for me.
It's always been a cash-in on the nostalgia factor.
I'm a longtime viewer that usually enjoys your arcade game overviews, but I'm really happy to see you speak out about this issue. The last time I bought from LRG was for River City Girls and VA-11 Hall-A. I already knew they were pretty scummy pushing artificial scarcity and forcing people to set reminders for a certain date when pre-orders would open and promptly sell out within 10 minutes. But even worse is they're still running the practice of keeping your money hostage for an entire year before even receiving the product. It's not surprising that they would try to cut corners despite the community taking notice of their recent releases in the last few years being of particularly lower quality. Thanks to your video though, the issue is blowing up on twitter and hopefully other social media platforms and they won't get away with this. Big respect to you for putting your reputation on the line and doing what's right. I hope this is enough to deter consumers from supporting LRG again, and I hope LRG at least makes good on this and sends out replacements/offers refunds. What a shame those who carried Kenji Eno's legacy trusted this company and LRG couldn't even get it right with over a years worth of time to prepare and ensure everything was up to the high standards they proudly claim they have.

They claim they had issues with traditional reproduction, because supposedly different 3do consoles were struggling with the results. So, for compatibility sake, they went with CDRs, only to find out that didn't work either (I mean, obviously?).
IDK. It sure does feel cheap, even though they claim it wasn't done as a cost-reduction measure. There's an article on time extension for anyone interested.
I don’t buy that at all. 3DO is a standard disc with Opera file system sized sectors. Nothing unique about them at all
They are a corporately owned company as of 2022 (Embracer group). It's cost cutting 100%. It's not even really a question, line must go up. Article is just PR fluff to cover for cost cutting.
Embracer is a shitshow and an absolute curse for gamers. They've sunk so many good studios and projects due to greed.

Stupid question but what is the difference between a burned and a pressed disc? I somehow have never heard of the term pressed disc.
Pressed / replicated is a wholly diff process of producing optical media. It gets complicated but pressed is made from a glass master and plastics are then laid up and melted and “pressed” per disc. Higher quality / diff process / better reflective quality and longevity
Duplicated / burnt is a dye layer that is burnt like your standard CD-R
When you press a cd in this case it sounds like it also matters what type of cd you use? I would like to get some inset into this as I looked it up on the net and still donhave a definite answer on the difference between a burn't and pressed Disc and why does a pressed disc last longer than a burnt disc?

Does the soundtrack CD have the bonus track hidden like on the original mini CD (track 99) or is it just the 3 songs that are listed on the disc? As a huge fan of this game (& all of Kenji Eno's games) I do feel like I need to get this even if it won't run on my 3DO. But I am disappointed that the game discs are burned & not professionally pressed. Hopefully Fumito Ueda gets credit this time for his contribution to the Director's Cut. But somehow I doubt it. I hear 2 music tracks from "D2" in the background. Nice touch. :)

@@VideoGameEsoterica Okay let me know once you check. Speaking of Kenji Eno's music, do you have the 12" vinyl E.P. for music from "D2"? I don't remember the title of the E.P. but I believe it has a big D2 on the cover. As far as I know it has 3 to 5 tracks one of which is called "Snowbird" (possibly the Snowbird Mix of "Mexican Flyer" from Space Channel 5?). I don't own this but I'd sure like to have it. The cat no. is SCJD-100001.

Many 3DO systems will not even boot these discs. Let alone the fact you don’t sell CD-Rs without telling people that’s what they are getting

Thank you for making a video. When the allegations came out, I was disappointed to find out there was no picture or video proof because I know people like to attack the company these days. This is pretty frustrating to see.
I've had issues with them in the past but they were minor and they were able to help me. What a shame.

@@VideoGameEsoterica I’ve just received a copy of their limited run PS4 Garou Mark Of The Wolves collector edition. I guess that’s still fine as I assume the disc are pressed by Sony. But this video has warned me from ordering anything else until further confirmation.
Yeah you can’t make PS4 discs without Sony’s involvement so anything modern has to pass checks
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah mate. I look up to Limited Run for them to inspired me to release our games in physical form too. After a few years of buying games digitally I've finally getting back to collecting physical games.
The crazy thing about companies like this thinking they can get away with obvious cost-cutting measures is that the niche that splash out money for these physical releases are in general going to be more likely to notice. This isn’t some mass market PS5 game, but a re-release of a game for a console that was niche on release.
They know a majority of their buyers are resellers and collectors, who only buy their limited releases to flip on eBay or to remain sealed and displayed on a shelf.
Maybe they never expected anyone to open this But jokes on them I don’t collect sealed haha
D fans deserve so much better after paying a pretty penny for the Collector's Edition. I feel for you guys so much.

@@VideoGameEsotericaI haven't come across any discussions regarding the issues that the PC version of the game 'D' by Limited Run Games is facing. It's possible that the game disc works well on older computers, but I'm not entirely sure. However, it's unfortunate that the company failed to realize the problems with the 3DO release, considering that you can burn your own ROM disc to play on its original hardware. It would be better if they partnered with different companies to manufacture official discs instead of scamming their customers. Given their track record, this wouldn't surprise me at all. But in all seriousness, this is bad.

For something expensive and well, limited run. This is completely unacceptable. Limitedrungames needs a fire put to their feet and let them know this isn't right. The voice over is done to the edit. So sometimes I say what I’m pointing at. Other times I say something different. There is no script so I kind of just “do it”
They need to fix this asap. This is from a channel that avoids controversy and conflict. Most reviews and stories here focus on the positive aspects so it's certainly different to see a negative review here but glad to see these types of things being brought to light. It's not fair trade in any sense so I hope there's a follow-up video with a decent final outcome to this story.
I don’t wade into controversy because I dislike it but for this I say something. People pay money for a product and they better get what they paid for. Especially for a game as good as D
I can’t help but comment that the Sony CD-R you show at 6:13 time stamp is one of the best quality CD-Rs imo for backing up 32-bit consoles, especially the Saturn 🤓 It’s been slightly better than the re-branded Taiyo Yuden for me when testing multiple burners and IMGburn at 4x. PX-716A = pairs well with it but also newer burners too ( pioneer XD05S/B )

One telltale sign you have a game on a CD-R, no Compact Disc wordmark on the artwork. All games on CD had the basic wordmark. Those CD-R's would either have to have the recordable wordmark (which they won't because that would have consumers refuse to buy them) or not have a wordmark on at all. If they added a basic wordmark like the original 3DO game CD has on those CD-R's, they would be violating the standard, committing trademark violation and duping consumers, leading to action from the FTC or trading standards or even legal action.
So many ways to tell a CD-R there was no way LRG could ever hide it

I wonder if it's maybe that proper replication isn't being offered for CDs anymore? Just looking at the web sites from Disc Makers and Superdups (which did my band's two albums) they are very vague about what they're actually offering, but it may be CD-R duplication instead of glass master replication. It's possible Limited Run Games also didn't know the difference.

I am honestly curious what manufacturer of CD-r's Limited Run Games went with, because the quality burn media varies considerably depending who actually made it. Somehow I wish they went with the expensive stuff, but I doubt they did.

I feel the same way about this sort of thing. They will probably do the same with the Genesis re-releases of Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel & Aero the Acrobat 2.. Instead of using traditional PCB boards in the carts, they will probably use cheap flash carts.

I heard about LRG but never brought anything from them. Sad. I buy many things and still sealed for my collections. If I were a big fan and brought this for my collection, I would never have opened it up and know about the CD-R. Good job.

Is there not cdr media that mimics the same color as a legit pressed disc? I'm surprised that is not a thing. I'm not a collector, so what concerns me more is the lifespan of those copied discs. Maybe I'm wrong but aren't the light green/yellow colored cdrs the worst you can use when it comes to readibility and lifespan? I gather there is no copy protection on the 3do?

That's really crummy but I must say, I'm a bit moved by how passionate you are about this game. I remember my brother renting it for PlayStation way back then and I was fascinated by it. I always wanted to give it a try myself. As a true fan of this title, you should absolutely take them to task.

It's also crazy they charge you up front without a release date. Last game i got was the contra collection that took over a year to ship. With these interest rates they are making bank and incentivized to delay.
I think mistreated customers should reach out to their japanese branches as well.

Wild. I was already put off by their ridiculous wait times ("we promise to deliver your order some time in the future after the chargeback window has lapsed"). This, on the other hand, is just inexcusable. Never again, Limited Run.

In my instance they take the DVD file structure and ingest that to produce a master. Then they send you a copy to proof. Approve that and you go to replication. So I’d submit Video TS and Audio TS asset folders

I don't understand much if anything about disc pressing, only that I can burn CD-Rs at home. So with disc pressing will it have to be done in a specific way so that the 3DO can read it properly? What's the process? Do you know of a good video explaining it?
It is really cheap of them to do what people can just do at home, at the risk of it not working at all. I tried to burn a CD-R with CD32 games and it wouldn't read it at all.
Also yeah I'd love to see a full release of all D games, and somehow D2. I'm disappointed that the M2 and D2 never came out.

Im worried i just got in a pc vr, and switch games in from them. I was going to wait untill i got new cables for my head set. I guess I'm opening it tomorrow. I hadn't planned on opening the switch games at this point. Since i got tired of waiting after a year and got digital copies.
This past year limited run has been really trying to remain relevant. Last year and two years ago they had a bunch of games I’d buy but now they’re kinda dry, this is just the cherry on top

I don’t buy repros, like ever. If I were to do this, I’d buy a pack of CD-Rs and burn a game onto them. Hey, that’s what I’ve been doing on the Saturn and Dreamcast. I too use CD-Rs to burn awesome OSTs onto which consist of anime openings/closings, the music I grew up with (that being 2000s punk like Sum 41 and Fall Out Boy which I’m a huge fan of and is my favourite era of music btw) and video game tracks. I’ve been doing that since I was a kid. And I also remember getting a DVD-R for my birthday back when I was like 7 from my sister and it contained episodes of SpongeBob on it. No idea what to do with the stack of DVD-Rs in my house because I remember time and time again, I would get a failed end result, most likely because I did something wrong.
That’s fair. I rarely buy repros unless I support the concept. In the instance of D I support more people playing the game
LRG has really poor production quality. The USB stick in the C&C remaster is so flimsy I was scared to plug it in to copy the music files over. So cheap and nasty.

Their international shipping costs have increased, and are way too expensive now. I checked the price of the Rugrats NES cart, and it was around 100€ with the cheapest shipping option. Did not order it... This situation, censorship of certain games and the shady firing of an employee over brain dead reasons are really making me reconsider ordering many of their titles. I kinda wanted that Rondo of Blood rerelease, but I'm not wasting nearly 100€ on a PC-Engine cd-r. I also want to be excited for the Gex collection, but they'll probably censor it, without mentioning it on the listing.

Whoah, crazy! I have bought stuff that is print on demand like that for some PC software utiliies, and even some videos, but they usually tell you beforehand and that's different. A collector's item should be properly pressed.
Yes print on demand is one thing. A collectors edition from Limited Run Games is another entirely and this is embarrassing for them

Why wouldn't it play since 3D0 has zero copyright protection. You can make burned copies of your 3D0 games and play them.
Not on all console models. Some do not like blank discs
I’ve followed LRG ever since 2018 when they did limited collectors editions of the Jak and Daxter series (my favourite game series of all time) and every single run I’ve seen them do since then has been disaster after disaster. If it isn’t because of the in some cases > 2 years shipping times on their releases, it’s some other bs like this.
How this company hasn’t gone under yet is astonishing. They make DKoldies look like a decent company.
If they keep this up they won’t last much longer unless scalpers keep them in business

I bought one game from them. That case was all warped and I just wanted a replacement case and they refused to honor that. Not to mention it took 6 months to get... Never bought from them again
