  • Limited Run Games has been known for doing small runs of games across different current generation consoles, however for a few years now they've been doing pressings of new AND old games for older consoles. These include the N64, NES, and for this specific example the 3DO. Although many people don't like the Limited Run Games pre-order structure, long wait times for shipping, or other policies, this situation with D: The Game for 3DO was the biggest surprise I've seen come from Limited Run Games. This begs the question: Is Limited Run Games really selling burned games?

    Yeah just burning some CD-Rs and slapping a nice cover on the box is not worth $60-$70 even more so when they don't work.

      Unfortunately I doubt we will ever see proper pressings of PS1 or PS2 titles due to the extra protections needed, such as the wobble groove on the PS1. To my understanding PS1 production completely ceased many years ago, and the final PS1 pressings were being sold on Square-Enix's shop.

      @@MrMario2011 I remember reading up about that a while back, if I remember correctly it was some Final Fantasy discs and they were silver as well. It's such a shame that we probably won't ever get to see brand new PS2 and PS1 discs like the Dreamcast has been getting.
      And hey, while you're still here, you mind making any videos on Xbox 360 disc drive flashing? I've heard about some new methods come up where you only need your computer to flash them, although tutorials are hard to find.

    A big problem with CD-Rs and other recordable discs (except M-Disc) is that the organic dyes used will deteriorate over time rendering the disc unusable. Pressed discs will last significantly longer if stored properly as, like the name suggests, are pressed pieces of plastic with the pits physically present in the plastic.

    I saw a report from the company stating that they are deeply sorry.
    They explained that they are still pressed discs but using CD-R manufacturing processes - of course that's just marketing mumbo-jumbo as they went on to state that the reason was because they were having compatability issues with the 3DO with some of the manufacturers...
    I highly doubt that, a pressed CD should work 100 times better than a CD-R...
    The fact is though this was a big no no for them, they tried to pull a fast one and got caught out and now they are paying the price.
    The only way to fix this is to issue out proper pressed discs to all those involved free of charge.
    I would be pissed too if I paid that sort of money for a "professional" reprint of a game, just to find out that it was done in some dudes bedroom on an old PC that still had a working CD burner.

    Recently I modded a broken ps1 I bought, and fixed to read burned games.
    I already have a modded ps2 with a large sata drive, but for nostalgia sake I wanted to play ps1 games on original hardware.
    I picked up a spindle of cdr's and a usb dvd writer.
    And man I wasn't ready for the rabbit hole I was about to go down.
    Some copies worked(but with skipping audio and FMV's), or just didn't work at all. I did some researched and found that if you put the ps1 on its side it can read them better. After realizing that's the stupidest thing I've ever seen. I researched even further, and found that with a multimeter you can tune the ps1's laser to read burned games.
    That's when I decided nobody has time for that when you already have a modded ps2 that can play backups from the hdd and nobody would be able to tell the difference.
    It is a sham though tbh I had no clue discs were pressed until recently, I just thought every thing was burned.

    Damn, Breach and Clear. You really were one of the early ones. I jumped in with Oddword: Strangers Wrath HD and then grabbed anything for Vita I thought looked cool from there. They were how I found out about Skyforce Anniversary, Organ Trail, Xenon Valkyrie+ and Salt and Sanctuary which all ended up becoming some of my favorite Vita games. I never had any issues with them until I got Demon Turf for Switch, I think it took them almost an entire year to get it to me which was ridiculous. I haven't bought any physical games from them since then. While I appreciate a lot of the stuff they get published/made like a lot of the classic game remasters, It's been hard seeing them get progressively worse about customer service over the years. I feel like for the people that are not constantly engaged in the unending cycle of video game industry drama, this was the misstep thatcs gonna turn a lot of people off of them.

    Isn't pressing the discs supposed to be cheaper than burning? With pressing you can make them way faster, just needs more (and more costly) preparation before it happens. Burning is easier to get going for sure but even at blazing speeds, it's going at snails pace compared to pressing. Not sure how many they are making, but I think it's a relatively low number that you need to press for it to be worth it compared to burning (google gemini is says 100+ but it of course depends and nor sure how accurate that is).

    • @MrMario2011
      @MrMario2011  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Faster, probably not cheaper, but that shouldn't be an issue for a company like LRG unless it's a situation where a release barely sells. I know a few years ago that happened with one PC release where the game didn't sell well enough to make pressing a disc worth it, so they sent the packaging but the game itself was on a Steam key.

    I have a real 3DO and it will absolutely refuse to read any burned CD-Rs no matter what speed it was burned, no matter what capacity the disc is 700mb / 650mb, and no matter what brand or who manufactured it. Some have suggested burning the CD-Rs using old hardware, I have 2x CD-ROM drives from the mid-nineties burn vintage blank discs and those still won't work. It's nothing wrong with the hardware, it's just a fussy system and some people get lucky and have systems that have no problem reading burned discs and others just don't.

      Probably depends on who made the laser assembly for your 3DO. The system manufacturer might've even used laser assemblies from various manufacturers. Panasonic, Goldstar, Sanyo, Creative Labs and Samsung each made and marketed their own variations of 3DO systems. So each one of them is likely built differently.
      It's a disappointing news nonetheless.

"D" would have been a good starting point to remaster & re-release Kenji Eno's games physically for modern consoles. Either sold individually or in a collection set, "D" "D2" "Enemy Zero" "Trip'D" "Flopon Kun P!" "You, Me, & The Cubes" "Panic Restaurant (with original end credits)" "Short Warp", all need a new lease on life.

    there are some technical issues for pro-CD that most of people dont know , the minimum ammount of copies you can make is 300 CDs, and for some press companies 500 CDs, so if you wanna make 100 copies or less it would be impossible to find any factory that can do that for you, you can ask your local band and they probably explain you this kind of issues.

      Yep! TL;DR being they couldn't get quality right for pressed discs, CD-Rs worked fine with their tests, but no other 3DO games have been pressed/burned, just D. All other 3DO titles are on hold for now until this is resolved, and they're offering full refunds to anyone impacted.

    I would actually advise against using a Blu-Ray burner, burners these days that hook up to the SATA ports on your motherboard do not burn at slow enough speeds to create good burns on CD-R's
    I use an external slim DVD burner to burn CD's because it can burn at low speeds that means my target platform for the CD will be able to read the CD properly.
    I hope that the GBA carts they'll ship out for Shantae aren't gonna be produced cheaply.

      They have! I'm paraphrasing, but in short they claimed that pressed discs they were trying to make did not have good results from their testing, yet they were able to have better results with CD-R.
      This is the only game they have completed for the 3DO so far, no other 3DO games will be made until this is resolved, and they are offering full refunds.

    I feel like limitedrun suffered from logistic issues ever since COVID. Switching suppliers, shipping services, and releasing very bizarrely niche games. The scope of LGR was to pick up physical editions for digital only games, now they widen too much

    Nice video! My thoughts as you requested:
    I agree, and like to add: Limited Run is indeed massively different than a Dreamcast hobby market selling a CD-R! Most of those people are homebrew hobbyists and their customers are too, generally speaking.
    It’s understandable considering their situation, from both the seller and the customer that the game would be a CD-R and not an official GD-ROM.
    Limited Run however, is on the shelves at Best Buy. They’re full commercial retail. The standard of quality for their products should be higher, and customers that see their brand in a prominent store like Best Buy - whether they are buying online or on-site, WILL expect a legit CD-ROM.
    Especially when it’s never disclosed before sale. That’s just plain deceptive.

    • @MrMario2011
      @MrMario2011  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Definitely have that expectation for a retail place like LRG! I'm unsure if you've followed the Dreamcast scene a ton, but many homebrew devs still manage to get their games pressed to CD!

    A burned CD will never will never be as easy for an old console to read as a pressed - likely lowering the life of the console drive.
    A burned CD won't last as long as pressed.
    A decent portion of my 15+ year old CD-Rs are trash with spots of clear plastic where media should be. Granted usually due to poor storage, but still. All my 15+ year old pressed CDs are fine.

    • @MrMario2011
      @MrMario2011  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For sure. Thankfully many of my CD-Rs are still going, but that's factually correct that they will be harder for a disc drive to read. Apparently several models of the 3DO do not like CD-Rs at all.

      Somewhere in the middle of the aughts, I ran into tons of games/movies that would just not read (rip) properly. It got so annoying. The discs were new and pristine too, but they looked off, like they had kind of a rainbow sheen where it kind of looked like the metal foil wasn't well adhered to the plastic disc. So, yeah, you can't always trust a press either.

  • @se7enity648
    @se7enity648 หลายเดือนก่อน

    If the game was supplied with pressed discs the game would be so expensive nobody would buy it. CD-Rs are cheaper. Customers should have been asked or given the option to which they prefered.

    • @MrMario2011
      @MrMario2011  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's absolutely incorrect, pressed discs aren't expensive enough to make a change in the price, especially since the price was originally set with the idea of pressed discs.
      There should have never been an option because it should have been pressed since the beginning.
