I asked, you answered...and I try to listen :) Of all the requests for new content on the channel one of the most frequently asked for videos is a series on the Terasic DE-10 Nano MiSTer FPGA hardware...so here it is! Retro gaming goodness.
Some mainstream stuff and some hidden gem games this month!
but the progress on the Nintendo 64 FPGA core from FPGAZumSpass is the most exciting!
Can't wait to see what May 2024 brings!

As long as it runs Superman 64 I’m happy!
You might be the only one lol
I can't argue with that. 😂
I spit out my water after reading this
🤣
That one superman 64 superfan that exists 😯
Really hope these pan out. While I personally don't need it since I already have a MiSTer, but the easier it is for more people to get into it, the better!
This is really big news, hope development continues to go smoothly for Taki. A FPGA handheld would give many of the retro handheld makers a run for their money and the possibility of a cartridge based console would be fantastic. Especially given how Analgoue operates
So far everything seems to be going smoothly
I hope that the MiSTer handheld will have better ergonomics than the Analogue Pocket. The Pocket's a great device if you want FPGA emulation, but (for me, at least) it's not exactly a very comfortable handheld to hold or use without some third-party grip attachment of some kind to space your hands out more. Plus it opens up the option for widescreen support for anyone that wants it.
It’s not the most comfortable handheld no
I couldn't agree more!!! The Analogue Pocket is basically a brick with buttons on it.
Been waiting for something like this for a while now, so when the news broke about these far cheaper FPGA sets, I got quite ... well happy :P. Really looking forward to this thing :) . Might become a replacement for my Raspberry Pi Based solution for parties to play these kinds of systems :).
Here’s to hoping they are avail soon!
I needed a bit of time to understand the options but I'm very satisfied running MISTer to the Tink 4K. I have the NES and SNES cores looking great at 1:1 (proportional), Super Gaussian scanlines at around 30 and A Grille Mono (Medium?) scanlines on 2. HDR is on. Colour correction has to be done to bring up or decrease the brightness further. I use Input Lift for this and have to take it back or forward a bit from zero. GBA is on auto-integer at 1:1 and has a minor border around the screen. The other cores I crop to 4:3 to mimic the size of a candy cab CRT.
It’s nice we get all these options but sometimes I almost feel like it’s too many haha
This is way more exciting than mars in the fpga space
Everyone wants an cheaper MiSTer
@@VideoGameEsoterica I'm especially looking forward to how the MiSTer handheld will turn out. Let's hope it won't be prohibitively expensive
That’s what I’m most curious about myself
I would love a hand held fpga.
Me too. Def want
I'm sure the efficiency on battery won't be great.
The DE-10 does not really take much power at all
@@joetoney184Analogue Pocket is FPGA and is OK on battery
what Matt said
Surprising to hear this is going to have a warranty, I had figured it was going to be just strictly collaboration with a producer in china to get these boards out.
Seems more official than that now which is a net positive
lol I love his LTT dig with "trust me bro" comment.
Haha that’s why it sounded familiar. I do like an LTT vid though. Casual entertainment tech stuff
It's a bad dig though. Linus is 100% right about this - no matter what the policy says, a warranty is only as good as the company's willingness to honor it.
The Mister handheld is super exciting. I just hope that it will end up having a great screen, speakers, as well as great feeling controls and an overall premium product feel. Anbernic does great at the same price level, I would just expect a Mister handheld to be somewhere in the $250+ price range at a similar quality.
Yea I’d rather pay a bit more for the premium feel and parts
@@VideoGameEsotericaabsolutely!
Let’s hope!
Glad to hear this isn't going to be a LinusTechTips style 'warranty'.
Not the first person to mention that
exciting stuff. I can certainly see appreciation for FPGA gaming growing over the coming years and beyond. There's no doubt an initial lure towards the cheapest ways to get your fix but as much as I love my Raspberry Pi for things like BMC 64 and Amibian, things like Retropie etc are an example for me at least of more is less. By it's nature there's a sort of beauty in what feels more real running on the FPGA and an elegance to it's simple but effective menu's and speed concerning getting into it all. No fussing or being taken out of the experience because you know you effectively are at a hardware level of running the games. Definitely a wonderful thing and I can see it's popularity growing quite a bit especially with things like this
Way more people need to be into FPGA then already are and being cheaper will def help that
VGE can you do a beginners video series on how to make a Mister FPGA? I have advanced 3D scanners and I make automotive parts but I would love to make a handheld Sega Saturn.
That might be above my pay grade
Or do you mean a setup guide
Yeah I need this I got the Arcade sticks, I got the software I got redump sets. Let's do this
Hopefully soon
Speaking of shmups, would like to see the Banpresto shmups on MiSTer. Macross and Manziger Z
Couple decent B tier shmups for sure
Weren't the remaining N64 core compatibility issues due to RAM timings on the Nano board? Could this problem be solved with the clone board?
Yes it’s a timing thing. No clue on if the clone could remedy that
I want one that fixes Jet Force Gemini. 😁
Haha don’t we all
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah. I have no idea how feasible that is, but it would be cool. I'm grateful for what we have, though.
Great news ! 🎉
Really is
I think a MiSTer FPGA in a Switch Lite form factor would be immense
I’d buy that for a dollar
Even though I have a full de-10 nano build this cheaper board really opens up the gates for everyone to get in on the project. If you can afford a Pi, you can afford MiSTer.
And it would be real fun to use multiple boards for dedicated hardware - Tate MiSTer, Lightgun MiSTer, Amiga MiSTer, etc.
Multiple MiSTers is nice. I keep one for captures one on my living room TV in DV1 mode and one hooked up to my pvm
This is really cool if it can get across the finish line. I do feel like right now Mister is not in the eye of Nin-Sauron, but if it were to go more mainstream I wonder if it would draw their attention and no one wants that
It can’t. It’s clean room reverse engineering. They have zero leg to stand on
@@VideoGameEsoterica all good but could you please answer with a lord of the rings analogy 😂
@@sega_kid4288 The ring wraiths have no horses.
Gollum falls in lava
I'd probably buy a few of these for friends at $100
I was getting ready to buy a couple of old consoles and a CTR TV and that is going to get expensive very quickly then I saw this I'm very interested in Dreamcast and Sega Saturn how's the future of them on the Mister looking? is there a video that shows you how to get started that is fairly recent? I don't want to buy the wrong Parts on accident lol
Saturn looking good. Dreamcast won’t come to MiSTer. Wait a min on buying. There’s some clone DE10s coming. Check my recent videos to see that :)
any word on screen size for the handheld?
No info as of yet
I imagine that you could read cartridges from a Retrode, if you wanted.
Possibly
Maybe not real time behavior though. Probably a dump then read.
This is how you grow a community... lower cost upfront will bring a whole other community of tinker-ers... lol Like myself.... bring it on baby! Great update, I appreciate the information! Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed :)
I can't wait to see what this clone will bring to the table, I had been curious about it but I couldn't justify myself entertaining the idea of expending 300€ on something like that less so north of 600€!
I’m looking forward to testing it
You keep saying that the clone is compatible with original addon boards... How does that work? I thought the pin layout was different on the clone, especially the USB-C power plug.
Power isn’t really essential for interoperability. The IO pins being signal compatible is what matters.
@@VideoGameEsoterica You daisy chain the DE-10 Nano's female barrel plug with the IO board's in order to power it though. Does the clone come with an adapter to do that with its USB-C port?
I’m sure an adapter will be made. Very easy
Just sold my MiSTer on eBay and will grab one of these when they come out.
Interesting move. Let’s see how it plays out
I will probably sell my Pocket as well once the handheld is confirmed.
I think a lot of people may
I figure it will make building a MiSTer cheaper so may as well cash out while they are still worth top $$.
I’m still curious how a clone of the DE10 nano is able to be made without license from Terasic…
Just kinda how it happens 🤷🏻♂️
Soon we can ditch the Raspberry Pi emulation builds (that is if you are a casual who doesn't use things like save sync and Retro Achievements) because this will be just as affordable.
Really good times to be a fan of retro gaming. I could see myself 3D printing a decent case so it doesn't look like a stack of Pis anymore too.
It’ll come in around the price of a Pi it seems yes
Any mistercade testing results yet?
Nothing as of yet
A couple months after I drop $600 on my MisterAddons prebuild.
Insert Kermit hanging from ceiling fan gif here
Still worth it
Ha, same here. Built my own system about a month ago, about £600 all in. I'm still loving it but now wished I'd waited just a bit longer.
What's worse is you probably wont be able to sell it even at half the price with these little off brand Misters selling like hot cakes as soon as the elite gamer influencers start praising them.. No offence @VideoGameEsoterica
Lol do I count as elite these days?
@@VideoGameEsoterica You count as 1337.
Why did someone make a MISTer clone board, when you could make an upgraded version? Like, DE-10 nano does not use all IO pins available in the package. Why not use them for a second, onboard RAM chip, so we could have dual RAM with analogue I/O board?
The “OS” is targeting the DE-10
My digital output on my mister is dead. I have it for almost 4 years now. This cheap version is just spot on.
Bummer to hear that
Gimme!
Needs to be cheaper, and competition is always good. I welcome this clone.
The more the merrier
How many MiSTers do you own?
Three
Off brand bottom shelf cereal gaming.. Hopefully it tastes the same.
Sir we call it “bandit brand” in this house
That Midway core 😭
I might be the only one who’s kinda “meh” on MK
@@VideoGameEsoterica There was also N.A.R.C. on it. A lot of fighting game fans seem to be meh on MK, but I'm not a fighting game fan. Plus all the ones I like you don't. 😆
@@VideoGameEsotericaI tend to agree to be honest none of the Midway games excite me much I always found NBA Jam hugely over rated too
They are all fun but none have ever been my fav
Can it run Crysis?
It would have a crisis trying
With groovy mister?
Haha then it def can

I salute you
I acknowledge this

Eeew altera
Or maybe it’s not? Still confusing since apparently there’s another tweet that said it was sarcasm?
