    I'm just teaching myself how to ride a bike. I'm 34 years old and I have a very poor balance, and paralyzing fear. I'm also very analytical so I need to understand how things work before I can actually do it without failing. The thing that helped the most was watching a lot of videos. Then practicing balance first before trying to actually pedal. So let me break it down: First I spent couple of hours with the theory (my husband explaining, demonstrating step by step and million questions) then I started balancing myself and trying to stay calm (I have panic attacks due to childhood traumas with bike accidents) and getting used to the idea of just being there and learning how to keep balance, and just using the bike as a scooter of sorts. Now when I felt more confident on the balance situation I found easier somehow to be in a small slope (going up) and place my left foot on the pedal, then push myself with the right foot while keeping my eyes somewhere at the distance. I managed to ride successfully a few times. I will keep practicing as I need to gain confidence and more control, but I'm getting there. Please don't give up and set your mind to it. I watched many videos to understand how it works. For me things like "you'll feel it" or "you will know what to do when you're doing it" doesn't work for me at all, if I don't get some small detail I freak out and fail miserably. So try a different strategy: try to understand the logics and you will make it for sure!

    To those who are adults and don't know how to ride a bicycle, don't worry too much about what others think, chances are they won't even judge you. If you never try to learn, then you'll be the one judging yourself every day for not knowing how to ride a bike. The worse thing that can happen is that someone looks at you learning to ride a bike as you're falling up and down. They'll think "wow that person is so old but still can't ride a bike!" Okay. So now what? That's pretty much it lol. They won't even remember you after 10 minutes so who cares?

      Please can you explain how you master your balance?

    • @HimadriG01
      @HimadriG01 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Esther-sh2tz my father in law took me to an isolated yard right behind his house. He asked me to try peddling half. It was a problem for me. Then I realised that most part of the balance depends on the first stroke of the peddle which is like applying the first gear of a car. After the first peddle you grip the handle well to steer through the road and try and peddle continuously. The first peddle is basically the core push to ride and balance the cycle. This has been my experience.

    There is nothing wrong about learning when you are old ma'am, there is no rules in bicycling that it was made to learn when you are a child, it's like learning motor bike is a must or learning how to ride a horse is a must, it's just some people were not interested in learning those things in earlier ages, so don't feel uncomfortable with that, keep going, you will get there.

I never knew how to cycle until 21 ,I was too embarassed about it. I felt so low when i saw little kids riding like pros .Finally when i got myself to out there,i learnt it in like 2 days .Some things arent as hard as we perceive them to be...Happy riding!!;)

      In any case, there isn't a whole lot to verbally describe, as the teacher said. It's about getting that feeling for how to balance. You just have to keep pushing off and trying again until you find that centre of balance.

    I'm learning to ride as an adult, and IME there are three big challenges: 1. Getting a feel for how to maintain balance and direction, using your body and the handlebars. Starting out just scooting is a great idea. 2. Learning to pedal without throwing your balance and steering off. Choosing the right gear and practising on a slight downhill slope can help. 3. Learning how to lean during cornering - necessary but tricky! Try coasting around in circles (both directions) and practise getting into and out of turns. Good luck and be patient!

      It is true what they say! "You never forget how to ride a bike." It just naturally comes back! Might be a bit wobbly, but you can do it!

    i remembered the biggest challenge/fear was stopping at an intersection on a red light then getting on the bike again while checking for any cars on my left or right while being confident at it haha 😛

    I personally don't like this "scooting" method of starting out. I'm 64 and never saw this method back in the day.
    Find it very disconcerting, wobbly and scarey not having feet on the pedals.
    Easier in my opinion to sit with feet easily reaching the ground and have dominant foot with pedal 2.00 oclock and push off, other foot takes the pedal. You are much more stable and balanced with momentum and forward motion from the push off to start.

    I’m 18 and I’ll start to learn next week!

  • @kjellg6532

    Take the pedals off an lower the seat so you reach the ground with both heels. Den you you look ut in the direction you want to go and start walking up to speed. Take your time, be confident. It is easier with a little speed so nice if you find a nice slope. Learn to brak and stop, setting one foot out. Decide which foot to set out. Practise stoping at a specific mark. In short, get used to ride on the bike and stop when needed. THEN you reinstall the pedals. Now your body knows everything about controlling the bike and you can concentrate on pedalling.

      I learned when I was 16- I can't steer to save my life. Your comment is so true, a mind of its own!! Breaking is terrible for me. It is never a graceful stop.

    • @Tanmoy1001
      @Tanmoy1001 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      haa haa, the breaking , balancing, peddling is very OK but the direction not so great. If you try to go in a straight line, it keeps going far right or left and also trying to ride on the side of the road will goes right into the middle of the road. like its trying to kill me.....

    I had a massive coronary 8 years ago and never completely regained my balance. I haven't been on a bicycle since. I'm 6'8" and would require a big man's bike. Q: are training wheels available for a larger framed bicycle? If I could only ride again...

  • @BN99239
    @BN99239 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm 32 and started a couple weeks ago. Took me quite a bit but I can ride a bike now! Just don't give up and if you're trying something 10 times and it doesn't work, stop for a minute and think about what you can change. If you just get in a bike, fall, get back on, fall and repeat, it will take a long time. Keep trying but try DIFFERENT things. Such as push with your feet only and try to balance. That doesn't work? Find a small downhill and push off and try to balance. That doesn't work? Try taking off the pedals and just use your feet to move you forward and then lift up your feet and try to balance. That doesn't work? Put your foot on 1 pedal and have it at the 6 o'clock position, leave the other foot off the pedal and try to balance etc.

  • @butterboiii9810
    @butterboiii9810 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I first tried to learn when I was little up to age 8. I could never do it and eventually gave up after having an emotional meltdown at 8 years old. It took me 9 years to try and learn again. This past summer I tried to learn again and I did the best I ever had but eventually fell and scraped my knee, making me not wanna do it ever again. I’ll probably never learn, which is fine because I have a car.
