  • More Americans are cycling than ever before. The number of people biking to work has gone up more than 60 percent in the past decade. But that is not an option for some adults. Mireya Villarreal shows us one class in New York City aimed at helping adults learn how to ride.

I only looked this up because I thought it would be like .1% of adults that can’t ride a bike, but there is much more than I would’ve ever thought. You commented this two years ago and I have to ask did you ever learn to ride a bike?

33 and just started pedaling. It takes time, practice and patience but with persistence anyone can do it. I started off just trying to balance and once i worked on my balance, I tried to start pedaling, failed and just came back to it. The more you practice, the better you become. Just don't give up!

Living in The Netherlands, I grew up with the bicycle, My dad learned me at the age of 3 how to ride a bike, first with extra side wheel, to prevent you from tipping over, and once you get your balance right, he removed the side wheels.
So the best way to learn it, is to come to the Netherlands.

If the only reason you don't know how to ride a bike is because of people laughing at you.. stop caring about what other people think! They are sooo irrelevant to your happiness and sense of accomplishment in life. This applies to any skill, not just bike riding. Do it for yourself and stop worrying about everyone else!

i’m relearning after a stroke . my left side is the most damaged. can’t use my left hand but the leg is OK. i can walk. i can ride a tricycle but I want a two wheeler back in my life because it would increase my mobility range. when used in conjunction with Public transport. my tricycleus electric pedal assist. but i need to relearn balance. it’s relatively easy to configure a bike for one handed operation. but you do have to be careful of obstacles that will try and wrench control of your front wheel. wearing a helmet is mandatory. especially after a woman who had been stopped st an intersection decidedto merge into traffic right in front of me. seoerated shoulder, cuts and bruises but lesson learned.good lights and helmet are now top priorities. As bu y levi’s my mode of transportation the cost if the bicycle safety and comfort is a fraction of car ownership

They learned in one session? I'm 32, I've tried multiple times in my life. The last time in my mid-20s I took a week off of work and practiced for 7 hours every day for a week and made absolutely no progress. I think I may have balance issues, though I have no problem walking and I do okay with weight training in the gym. The woman who cried was very sweet.

QuantumBraced go down a big hill. That ought a teach ya. No but really the way a bike works is the faster the wheels spin the stabler the bike. So I know it can be intimidating but if you go faster you don’t have to worry about balance as much.

Try finding bicycle classes. Or try to find who can teach you (essentially anyone who already rides a bike without any issues). Don't worry that much. Bicycles seem scary and prone to falls and such, but if you get the hang of it, you'll learn in no time. I have been personally riding for only half a year and I had maybe like 2-3 falls. Just make sure you don't try to ride too fast.

You're joking, right? You think everyone has access to a bike or parents/caregivers who are willing to teach? My brother had a bike (10 speed road bike), but got hit by a car and broke his hip at age 14 in May 1985. Be cause of that accident, my parents had zero interest in getting me a bike, let alone teach me to ride a bike.
They also never taught me to drive. I didn't learn to drive until age 27. I turn 46 next month and just learned to ride a bike because I taught my son and he wanted me to ride with him.
Don't "diss" people who never learned to bike. You don't know their story. Have some empathy.
