    Hi - two more tips that focus on your bicycle rather than adapting your clothes. 1) Add a chain guard or chain case (if hub gears/ no derailleur). This prevents the open chain from mucking up your trouser leg/ long skirt/ long coat. It also partially protects the chain from the weather so less maintenance. 2) add a coat guard (also called skirt/ dress guards) to the back wheel. These can either attach to the back mudguard or go over the top of the mudguard. These prevent fabric from your skirt, dress or long coat from being sucked into the wheel and damaged by the spokes. Most dutch bicycles (omafiets) comes with both of these fitted as standard but you can easily buy them separately and retrofit to your existing bicycle. Hope that helps! Best wishes from the UK

      Awesome advice on the mechanical side of things! I read a really interesting book recently called “bikes and bloomers” that goes into the crazy history of bikes and dresses plus has a ton of old pattens that seem to be the precursor to both those suggestions! Happy safe skirt riding :)

    I've never worn dresses or skirts before but really want to, but like biking places. All my bikes have that crossbeam that goes horizontally from saddle to the steering bars and I thought it would be impossible to get onto my bike with a skirt because of that. I never would have considered just tilting the bike and stepping over it instead of swinging my leg over the back like I'm used to. Thank you, great help.

    Now I'm thinking about a belt with a clip at the front for long skirts. Grab the hem of the back of the dress, bring it forward through the legs, and clip it on at the belt. Hmmm. Wonder if that would work and how it could be made.

    • @BroadwayBiker
      @BroadwayBiker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great Idea! There has been a lot of "convertible" dresses and skirts made throughout the years, but I haven't seen a simple and snazzy belt solution. Maybe this is your niche market ...

    I am dresses and skirts all the way; the last time I wore pants was when I went skydiving (ONLY because I had to), and the last time I did _that_ was back in 2009! so help me, a friend talk me into buying an e-bike at Costco that was on sale because I knew he was right about the importance of having a bike especially if I don't drive otherwise, and I had been previously hesitant to buy another bike because of my (well-set) preference of clothing. I would probably still have my last bike if it wasn't for the dress issue! I just bought the Jetson Pro foldable e-bike today, and have yet to take it for a test run for the first time because I just unplugged it. I don't think I have shorts, but I do have bathing suit bottoms that have the mini skirt so I guess that would be better than nothing. Lol at least I go for the longer dresses, so getting caught is my primary concern, rather than the flashing. 😆

    • @BroadwayBiker
      @BroadwayBiker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hope the ebike is super fun and a great addition to your life! If you don't have a chaingaurd, gathering the excess fabric is really the key for long dresses. Another option not in this video is to get some rubber bands or snap bands and secure the fabric around your ankles while making sure to sit on the upper fabric in a way so it doesn't get caught in anything.

    • @BroadwayBiker

      It really hinges on your butt being on the seat to keep the folds together. So it's not an ideal method for standing up and pedaling, unless you're using a rubber band or hair tie to hold it together which is 100% an option!

    So I am also a bike nerd and I also have a surly trucker along with other Surlys. I noticed that your trucker is a 1xwhatever with a single downtube shifter. Can you give me any more information on your bike?

    • @BroadwayBiker
      @BroadwayBiker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      taqwache sharp eyes! Since I’m a very short individual it took me a long while to find a used frame in my size. The frame is a 2015 trucker that was then built up my the former owner and modified by me. I currently have a tiagra one by up front and an old sun tour derailleur + 8 speed cassette on the rear. Wheels are nothing special and will be my next upgrade. I was going to do bar end shifters but ran out of time before I did my major bike trek and now am so used to the down tube shifting I may never change it! So definitely not a factory build, but I like that it can change shapes depending on what it needs to be.

    • @taqwache
      @taqwache 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BroadwayBiker thanks for the reply! Downtube shifters are the most efficient and reliable shifters out there. I have them on all my Surlys. My Disc Trucker is a 3x9 with Dura Ace downtube shifters. I also have a Cross Check with a 2x10 and a Pacer with a 1x10 both on downtubes. Only thing I would suggest is to add either a 2 or 3 speed on the front if you plan on riding anywhere with hills.

    • @BroadwayBiker
      @BroadwayBiker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That disc trucker sounds like a touring beast!
      Yeah...I made it across the country on a 1x8 but hoo boy some of those days were rough! I slapped on a crankset with 3 rings up front in someones garage before going up the Pacific coast (but no front derailleur with was fun) which saved my life. For commuting and most touring I'm fine with this setup, but when I go into mountain territory again I will most definitely be putting on some mechanical advantage up front!

    This destroys the whole purpose of wearing a modest long dress... just get the chain gaurds and the one that covers half of the rear wheel... this video is absurd

    • @BroadwayBiker
      @BroadwayBiker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey thanks for your comment. As you might have heard in the intro, I didn't make this video with long garments for modesty specifically in mind. Rather, this is how I personally ride and wear various types of dresses as someone who doesn't wear them for modesty purposes - so I don't think I would call it absurd in the least.
      You are absolutely right that a chain guard, and rear fender that encloses a portion or the entire wheel are great options for someone who is wearing long dresses and doesn't want to expose their legs. You could also try gathering excess fabric around your ankles while still keeping your legs covered with either a Velcro ankle biter strap or pant clips.
      Hope you find a system that works well for you - happy riding!
