    FAQ:
    What top coat/base coat do you use?
    - I don't have a favorite topcoat, usually I use the INM Out The Door (can be found at Sally's Beauty Supply) for swatches and the HK Girl from Glisten & Glow for manicures. My all time favorite base coat the CND Stickey. You can find that on Amazon.com or at Ulta stores.
    Why do you take your picture and video swatches separately?
    - Since my lighting, camera settings, and tripod all have to be adjusted when switching from pictures to video, its faster, and helps keep the lighting more consistent, if I batch process all the pictures at once and then all the videos at another time. It also helps me get a feel for how to work with the polish if I do my pictures before the video.
    How long do you let your nail polish dry between coats?
    - I wait until a coat is completely dry to the touch before adding another one. The time it takes for that to happen varies from polish to polish, but usually is around 5-10 minutes.
    How long do swatch videos take you to make?
    - To take pictures, film, edit, and upload, it takes between 5-8 hours depending on the size of the collection.
    Why don't you paint EVERY SINGLE inch of your nail and ALL THE WAY UP TO THE CUTICLE EVERY SINGLE TIME?! DEAR GOD WHY?!
    - I purposely avoid the sides of my nails and my cuticle line when I'm swatching because I do swatches one after the other after the other. Removing polishes that are applied too close to the skin can stain the skin around my nails and make the next swatch look bad. I do it to keep the video clips and pictures clean.
    Where did you get your nail polish racks?
    - The racks on the wall behind me can be found here:
    www.amazon.com/Bottle-Nail-Pol...

    I watched this video about 6 months ago. I didn't know that thinner existed. I have saved so many old nail polishes now thanks to you Jess. Thanks. I even had one that was completely dried down in the corner. Originally it was a very dark sapphire blue. I filled about a quarter of the bottle with thinner and about half with a regular clear polish. Let it sit and shook it every day for a week and boom, Instant jelly polish.

    I've checked all of the ingredients in every nail polish thinner I've come across. As far as I know, the only two that can be fully trusted are the ones from OPI and Orly. They both contain nothing but butyl acetate, and ethyl acetate. Those are the two ingredients that every nail polish is based on. I've found that the other thinners often contain filler ingredients like alcohol. Some of the cheaper ones even contain acetone.

      The Sally Beauty nail polish thinner contains heptane, butyl acetate, and ethyl acetate. is that brand good to use since the ones from OPI and Orly are a bit pricey?

    • @Genevieve1023
      @Genevieve1023 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** There are some nail polishes that contain heptane, so I wouldn't consider it entirely unsafe. I use the Sally Beauty thinner myself in my less expensive nail polishes.

      I didn't ask if it was unsafe. I asked if it was a good brand to use since Orly and OPI were pricey. I assume from your answer that the Sally Beauty brand is a good brand to use. I'll give it a shot.

      actually the reason why nail polish remover removes nail polish is because it dissolves it... if you add nail polish remover to nailpolish it will dissolve in it and will dilute it... as simple as that

    I've had a nail polish from when I was a pre-teen, I'm 27 now. It was lime green, but now it's a mint color. lol
    I've been told in the past that you can put nail polish remover in polish. I tried it only once. I put some in a really thick clear polish (a Sally Hansen top coat) and I could literally see why it was a bad idea. It never fully mixed it and just made the polish worse. Never again.
    I hope Nail It gets a ton of letters/emails/messages and they make a retraction article.

Send them a link to this video (wink, wink...hehe), seriously though, this video and any of the other great educational videos available on You Tube could possibly help the situation. • @asteijk
    @asteijk 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    chanel has it different and i have a polish nail for 2 years now and is still perfect because the brush is separate from the top , so the air that goes in the bottle when you use it , gets stopped because of the separation , less air ...more time ..less thickened
    so for normal /cheaper bottles we should use a top that will cover... :D

    As a guy I’d never thought I’d be watching this. The reason I am is that I’m taking a watch I recently bought and experimenting taking minor scuffs and scratches out of the glass by coating it with clear nail polish. The problem with the polish I’m using is that the thickness of it keeps a bunch of annoying little bubbles in it. I’m hoping a thinner will help the bubbles escape more easily. Wish me luck.

    I love the video on how to fix and prevent thickened nail polish. I just cleaned out all the thick nail polish I had, but I think I saved two bottles that I could not part with. Also good to hear that I can buy older nail polish colors and they probably haven't expired. What is the name of the thinner you use from Sally's it's not listed in the comments and it's hard to see what the bottle says in the video.

    How about thickened fast-drying top coats?
    Do we use other "special" thinners for them (most of the brands create certain thinners for their products. E.g: Seche Vite thinner for their fast-drying top coat) or just the regular ones (like the one you showed)?
    Would adding thinner affect/prolong the drying time of the supposed-to-be fast-drying top coat?
    And maybe you should also make a video or just comment here on how do we choose a good thinner. What are the supposed ingredients that a good thinner should have and should not have? Thanks!

      Hi, my seche vite fast drying top coat was thickened up quite a bit previously and ytd i added opi thinner to it and it worked. however, I realise that you do need to add more thinner to it than normal nail polishes and shake it up well. :)

    Oh my God. The acetone/remover thing. I HATE THAT!!! Everytime I talk to my mom about being out of thinner and desperately needing more, she's always like "Just put nail polish remover in it, that'll fix it" ... It drives me crazy. I can't count the times I told her how bad it is for the polish, she just won't learn from it. Same with some of my less polish-crazy friends. I always end up shouting at the person suggesting it.
    Also, I'm totally guilty of the whole cold bottle thing. With me it's kinda different, because my room is just generally cold at all times, because I hate warmth and I can't fall asleep when it's over 68 degrees. And that totally ruined some of my polishes. It's not just opening a cold bottle, it's generally keeping a bottle in a cold environment, I think. Most of my polishes have gotten thicker since I got them, so I might have to give in and start heating my room, even though I really don't want to.
    Great video (although nothing super new for me this time), thanks for posting! :)

    i would think it would be common sense not to put nail polish removal in your nail polish as a thinner since you use it to remove your nail polish which can't be good to put in your polish cause it'll eventually ruin it and idc who says its okay, never bought it and never did it, nail polish too pricey to be messing up, finally found out about nail polish thinner or restorer after doing some research and that's the only thing i'll use to thin my polish after thickening, the beauty secrets brand is my favorite one, affordable and works great, i tried the orly one, too much nothing special works no better than the beauty secrets one so why spend more money on it and after i'm done painting my nails i put the polishes aside and after my nails dry, i put on gloves and clean around the top of the bottle to prevent build up cause that's a pet peeve of mine i don't like cause it cause the caps to stick or like you said dry out cause air gets in their from the cap not being tight

    I've never put remover in my bottles, you're right, a polish will be completely ruined after a month, separated like oil and discolored. I use a brand call beauty secrets thinner. It comes with a dropper and so far I've only used to to thin out my Essie's and Revlon Gel Envys. Those two brands have the thickest formulas.

I'm too much of a hoarder to give up on fixing a bottle of polish. I still can't believe a polish polish magazine WOULD PROMOTE ACETONE TO FIX THICK POLISH. So stupid!

    The only polish that gets thick for me is fast dry top coats. I use HK Girl and it gets gloopy so fast, and seche vite does that, too. How do you prevent/fix that? I keep them well-closed.

      +emzadia i have the same problem with the Seche Vite but never with the HK Girl ... for the Seche i use their thinner .. it works great!

      I don't think you can prevent Seche Vite from getting thick. But they have Seche Restore that adds in the lost chemicals. And it works fairly well.

    • @jessFACE90
      @jessFACE90  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +emzadia I know Seche has their own thinner that replaces the specific chemicals lost in the topcoat. I'm not sure about the HK Girl though. Topcoats tend to thicken so much faster because we use them more than a regular polish.

    I have polish bottles that are *years* old! I just shake the bottles well before using it. Except when it's thick, I put nail polish remover in it - I just do, and it works! It's not acetone, though, just a regular polish remover. We can't get pure acetone as polish remover in the EU, I don't think, not in Belgium in any case (I've never found it).

    • @juplu
      @juplu 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +amixeblu I also got old bottles and have put acetone-free-nailpolish-remover in them and shake well.. (I guess Norway has the same rules.) I learned it looong ago, but can't remember if I did it when I was younger when there probably was acetone in it, so I can't remember if there were any difference. The polishes that are thinned out with the acetone-free seems fine so far at least.

    I cringe when I think about people using acetone to thin polish... Thinners are great but look out for the really cheap ones, I've seen a few that contain acetone which is really annoying.
    So glad you mentioned using the fridge to store your polish, I have a few friends who do this and I always try to convince them that they don't belong in there. That constant temperature difference can't be good for the polish.

      +Faye Bush I use nail polish thinner on my glitters, topcoats and basecoats and use the entire bottle up. For glitters I prefer the OPI Thinner, apparently there are some thinners are better than others. Thinner is a great investment.

      +Faye Bush Top and base coats can be a bit experimental, but glitters should work fine, since you're just thinning the base. I haven't had too much luck with Sinful Colors, I actually just destashed almost all of mine.

    I've wondered about which thinner to use on 3, 4, and 5 free polishes, but I rarely have to thin polish. I have so many that they aren't opened all too often, LOL. I have had the same bottle of Beauty Secrets thinner for years. I had a few bottles that thickened up and I went to thin them only to find that I closed them so tight that I had vertical cracks going up the stem. So they were a loss. Close them tight but not too tight :/

    I have had issues with thinned polishes not lasting. I store my polishes in a dark part of my closet, keep the threads clean etc. However, when I thin a polish, it works well the first time, but the second use after thinning it seems to be even thicker than it was before. Has anyone else experienced this? At first I thought it was just the Zoya thinner not working well with my other polishes (I went and checked the solvents in the thinner) , so I switched to the beauty secrets one, but I have the same issue. If anyone has any tips please let me know, I can't stand the thought of having to thin some of my older polishes every time I use them.

    • @shinyhappypeople9043
      @shinyhappypeople9043 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +struckanerve88 the more air in the bottle the more the polish thickens, thinner is just slowing the process, but it still continues, so yes, once you start thinning you have to keep thinning but that's not the thinner, its the air in the bottle that's causing the problem.

    Great tips! I can understand some people who live in extremely hot weather without air conditioning to keep their polishes in the fridge. I have taken my polishes south on vacation or even when I receive them out of my mail box on a hot day....it's goopy, particularly neons and pastels. Also, I don't think some people know how to safely dispose of their polishes they no longer want (whether it be to sell, swap, donate or get "rid" of it in an environmentally safe way. Perhaps that might be an idea for a video? :)

    • @skiptomyluludarling8519

      There are two ways people can get rid of bad polishes. One is to participate in Zoya's Earth Day event. When you buy 6 or more polished you can send them your less than 3 free polishes and they will dispose of them. Another way is to simply open the cap and let them completely dry out. And then you can dispose of them in your regular trash day. This isn't directed at you particularly. Just wanted to put the info out there that might help people if they see your comment.

    Thinning with nail polish remover causes the Nails to chip faster, there's nail polish thinners. now if you paint your nails every 3 days I guess whatever you use to thin it will work for you. If you keep your polish in the fridge, and keep the opening clean and tight it will not get thick.

    I was wondering if you could do a how to prevent bubbles video because that's what keeps happening to me lately. I mean, I've been having trouble with only 1 thick polish, Black Out by Sally Hansen, and I threw it away yesterday because I refused to put acetone in because I know it makes bubbles in the polish and it breaks down the polish chemicals too. But, I've been having trouble with stupid, annoying bubbles in my nail polish.

    • @BillytheBrime
      @BillytheBrime 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jada Long The bubbles are more likely cause by a lot of shaking and then applying the polish right after. It's better to roll the bottle in your hands than vigorously shaking it. How thick are your coats? I had huge problems when I first starting hoarding polishes because I wanted them to be opaque in one coat and would do a thick coat and then another to smooth out the bubbles from the first coat.

    • @jadalong9587
      @jadalong9587 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +BillytheBrime I don't think that my coats are really thick. And the thing is, I don't even shake or roll my polishes. I know that's probably really bad, but I still end up getting bubbles. I looked at a video that said not to shake it, but to roll it, and it said not to make the coats to thick, and to wait until the coat dries before adding another, and I did that but I still got the ugly, horrendous bubbles...😭😭😭💔

      +jessFACE90 Yes, it's what you hear from people who don't know about nail polish. It's what always has been said. But a magazine as Nail It really should give right information and I think we all should contact the editor in chief and inform her about this. I have a subscription to the electronic version so I can take a screenshot of the page and attach it to an email. You who have the physical magazine can scan the page. I thought the journalists working on a magazine, which is only about nail art and lacquer, were informed about how to take care of our lacquers but apparently they are not. Or perhaps it was the youngest intern who wrote this? Who knows? Strange that this error wasn't caught in the proofreading.

    I doubt very much if you use pure acetone there will be a problem. Acetone has been used forever in the paint industry as a thinner I think the problems happen when you use nail polish remover which is acetone plus other ingredients such as oil. The thiinners probably just evaporate more slowly which may be an advantage and it may cost more,, acetone has always worked for me as long as you don't leave the bottle open for a long time. As the video says many thinners do contain acetone. Acetone thinned polish also dries fast.
