Nissan Ariya V Tesla Model Y - the pros and cons of each and practicality test

  • The Nissan Ariya is a Model Y alternative of similar size, space and range but which is better for you? The Nissan offers some features the Model Y doesn't, but the Tesla has some features the Ariya doesn't... so which is best for you? Well in this review I try to demonstrate some of the pros and cons of each so they can help you decide which is best for you.
    In this test we use the Nissan Ariya "Evolve" specification with 87kwh (USEABLE!) battery and 2 wheel drive.
    We also show the space for passengers of each plus load them with Ikea removal boxes to see which one holds the most.
    There's no right or wrong, it's about which suits you more and hopefully this video will help you with that.
    Thanks for watching

    I have gone for the Ariya. My wife was not comfortable controlling everything through an offset screen was a major issue with the Tesla. Ride comfort and the quality of the cabin came down on the Nissan side too. Also (and this is very subjective) the look. The Tesla looks a bit bland in comparison. Also, Nissan dealers are everywhere and local to most people for servicing and any issues. Tesla centres are few and far between. Both good cars, and if it was just me I probably would have edged towards the Tesla, but the Ariya kept us both happy.

    I’ve had an Ariya for seven months now. It’s been a great car. I get 3.9m/kWh over the summer months. Would I have another, yes, would I have a Tesla yes. I chose the Nissan because the dealer is close and convenient, which is a primary requirement for me.

    Living in Brisbane, Australia, we found the Model Y glass roof to be a real drawback when we had our test drive. No way to close off the heat from the sun. I know there is an after market internal sliding roof you can buy, but looked like a cheap after thought. Interested to know what the Nissan has in this regard. 🤔🤔

      Yeah but it’s Nissan, they are likely to bankrupt In The next 12months so buyer beware, having said that we are also from Brisbane and had a Nissan murano for 10 years, when we wanted to upgrade to the Ariya they were simply not interested In Selling it to us even though it was 3 months away. so we got a Volvo and a model 3 also both best in class I think.

      Nissan just reported $1.4B in profits in Q2 ‘23. They raised their revenues guidance for the rest of 2023. Hardly “bankrupt”. Go educate yourself.
      I also have both Prius Prime and Volvo EX30 on order with my $500 deposits. Tesla Model 3 is soooo YESTERDAY! I suggest you look into Volvo EX30 and while you’re at it, go test drive a Nissan Ariya. Keep an open mind..

      The one take away i got from this video was that the Ariya can also fit 15 small boxes. I thought it would be less than the MY.
      The Ariya does not have a frunk but it has really roomy front floor. This allows me to put a dog bed on the front floor for my pooch to lay down next to me. Since owning the Ariya, I don't allow my dog to sit on my leather seats (light gray leather seats). It's really a bonus to have roomy front floor instead of a drunk. Most times, I lay my gym bag next to me too.

    The main problem of Tesla Y is not practicality but missing radar and parking sensors. The Tesla Vision doesn't work correctly and can be dangerous... Family car without precise safety system is crap :-) For me the winner is commont ID4 or Mustang emach :-)

    Hi, great video! I have a 23’ model Y rwd and I agree with all your short comings of the Y. I’d also add that it can feel quite echoey inside, especially if you’re in the rear, although I run without a parcel shelf due to having a dog, I also have rubber mats in over the carpet ones. The firm ride also booms through the cabin a lot! Wouldn’t change it though.

    The design of the lights and front of the car is based off of traditional Japanese kumiko wood working
    The hidden compartment that uses the button to pull out is also useful to put your computer on it if you are working on the go, or taking some time while charging. Because of its flat top its not the most practical to just be a mechanical pull out. Its nice that its electrical. This is also your nice big storage area. It was moved from the console in the middle, to the front hidden pull out
    Platinum+ AWD is 0-60 in under 5 seconds. Something like 4.5 seconds

      Ariya has way many more features than a bare bone Model Y.
      *Panoramic moonroof that opens and closes
      * Has motorized sunshade cover
      * Has rear spoiler with rear wiper
      * Has tonneau cover
      *Has an electronic glove box
      *Has blind spot indicator
      * Has HUD
      * Has 10-11 airbags vs Model Y 8 airbags
      * Has rear view mirror cam
      *Has Apple Car play/Android Audio
      *Has beautiful interior and exterior lightings
      * Has Aerial Birds Eye 360 view
      *Etc etc
      How much do you think these features on the Ariya should cost vs Model Y minimalism?
      The ride in the Ariya is buttersmooth. Everyone i knoww who owns a Model Y thinks Ariya is the best drive in it's class.

Speed and range are not significant as they both exceed the national speed limit and can easily travel from Land's End to Birmingham in one hit. I purchased my first EV in 2012 (Nissan LEAF). Haven’t visited a gas station in 12 years. Maintenance is pretty much tire rotation. The Ariya I purchased came with lifetime maintenance and a 10 year 100,000 year warranty.

    My 2023 USA Fremont Build Tesla Model Y long range AWD with its Panasonic 82KWH battery with 79KWH use-able would beat the Nissan, I sure do love this car it also charges noticeably faster than the LG 79KWH battery EU built Tesla Model Y long range AWD. I had a 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Long Range AWD top trim I sold to buy my Tesla (7 months of no fast DC charging since delivery and 6 service trips to finally fix it) was enough for me sell it. Nice car but here in North America the other issue is CCS charging network totally sucks so that also was the other 50% reason I moved to a Tesla Model Y, Tesla only builds EVs so repairability is 200% better than the ICE trained Hyundai service techs (my long time for repair highlights that). I love your CCS2 charging infrastructure, look forward to a trip to Norway next year! l always stopping by on your channel! Thanks for the great content!!!

    You haven’t experienced the standard in EV ride quality and cabin comfort (get the cloth interior), until you’ve driven an F150 Lightning. It floats along the highway like a StarWars Landspeeder, and it’s quicker. There’s no substitute for cubic feet of cabin, for spacious comfort and cathedral audio system acoustics. True luxury, imho. A rolling salon.

    Battery size DOESN'T matter! EFFICIENCY matters!
    In fact, this is primary aspect, you use the smallest battery and have the most range.
    One goal is to have like a 50kwh battery that can be driven like 500km on highway
    Not to have a 100kwh or 80kwh battery to barely achieve that, if that even.
    This means EV tech quality.
    Imagine if your EV is crap tech and needs a bigger battery, is the same as a 70s gas engine versus a same size 2000s one. Poor efficiency of the outdated engine you won't chose it if you can put in a modern one, right?! Right!

    Tesla cars are filled with good tech but aesthetically they lack any warmth and character. Bland and austere would be about the most generous accolade I could give them.
    Also, I was looking at insurance and insuring a Tesla seems to be inordinately expensive at the moment.
    If you are a mile muncher Tesla is hard to beat but if your use is average then it makes no difference.
