TLM 102 is my baby. Best 700$ I've ever spent and have used it on many albums for fiddle. I have recorded on vintage u87's and u67's, but this little fellow does so well whenever I go to a studio that uses mostly inexpensive microphones.
I have the 102, while listening to the singing test on iPhone AirPods I looked away and couldn’t tell/hear a change as you switched. Maybe it’s different in the room, like you I use different mics but for my small home studio I do love the 102 👍

Great video and beautiful voice too... I have the 102 and it works well for me (mines more for broadcasting for radio/voice overs) the 103 sounded even warmer on your vocals , ... Mark
This was crazy. The 102 sounded better on headphones, but the 103 sounded better on speakers. On headphones, the 102's more down-to-Earth sound benefitted and the 103's spaciousness almost worked against it. On speakers, the 103 cutting through more made it sound better than the 102. That being said, if it weren't for the comparison, I would like the recording anyways
As a used mic, the TLM 102's price becomes a major difference. $450-500 vs $700-900.
The 103 sounds more open and your vocal sounded more involved with the recording than the 102. I also think the 103 sounds more even across all frequencies. But the 102 is arguably the better value for money because it just sounds so good at that price point.

Damn Dude, I thought we were going to just get a comparison review between two mics...... You can really sing. I was blown out. Either mic was fine but YOU what the hell.... You are a great singer. That was a real surprise. For my 2 cents as a bass player and recording engineer for 40 years the 103 is the winner as you would expect. I wish I could sing like that. Into a Campbell's soup can attached to a string, it wouldn't much matter. Best of luck Ed you have the gift. Tod in Las Vegas. :)

Hey Edward - Thanks to you my friend I just purchased a TLM 103. I have owned a Rode NT1a for a few years and in my opinion, the 103 is now the king.
I have a NT1a and im not extremely impressed tbh. Is it worth investing in a TLM 103?
@@SilkGlock In my opinion the Neumann TLM 103 will out live me. I have no reason to upgrade further.
I tried 2 tlm 102 mics today. One was 10000 Number series and the other was like 31000 number series. I found them to be very different. The older one had way more lower tone to it but still crisp in the high end. The logo as well had a shine to it while the new version had more matt finish logo. They both genuine 100% but I was surprised to see a difference like that in the 2 mics. Anyone experienced this with any of these mics? Thanks
It seems common with a lot of mics to have variance but it's hard to tell how much of it is natural manufacturing tolerances from any point in time or different manufacturing period.
Hey Edward between the TlM103 and the U87 did you notice a huge difference in quality? In vocals” recordings ? .. Also was the U87 sensitive enough to record in a sound treated area?

im surprised to see so much people say they can’t tell the difference. I feel as though i heard it right away. The TLM 102 sounds as if it adds more to the high end, while taking a degree of audio from the mid range, to give it a little bit more pitch. While the TLM 103 sounds as though it adds more to the mid range brining more warmth while still retaining good levels on the high end. I think most people don’t see the difference because like all artist when starting music we we’re all into a certain kind of rawness when it comes to quality. So gradually over time mic’s with more high-end, ends up sounding more normal and natural to you because thats just what you’re used to.

If were talking about vocals the 103 hands down its a workhorse in my studio and seems to fit everybody and cuts through the mix very well. The 102 is a good mic but i would never pick it over the 103 for vocals. I actually had the 102 i got for a really good price and used it for a couple months to see what it was capable of and ended up selling it just because i already had the 103 and had other mics that were better for other circumstances. Just felt like once i out it away I probably would of never reached for it again unless i forced myself to.

I have the TLM103 and I have found that vocals really sit well in the mix, yet cut through easily. Compared to the junk that I was using before, it is night and day. I am sure the same would be true for the 102. Both very nice mics.
The difference is SLiiiiiiiiiiight I just got a 102 and I’ll get a 103 if I get a deal but, for now it’s not worth double the price.

please tell me I have a poorly prepared room, but I do not like the sharpness, harsh sound of midrange 102, or is it corrected by the equalizer, as 103 behaves in not ideal conditions? .

What kind of voice do you have that makes the 103 a better fit for you?
@@discoverychannel3151 the 103 is clearer and makes your voice deeper richer sounding if you have a bassy voice, on the other hand if you have a squeaky more high pitched voice
the 102 will amplify that and you'll be able to even hear more of the S's and the P's through it. In either case the 103 sounds better hands down.
After this comparison I would definately save more money and get the TM-103 it sounds way more fuller to me.

Thanks for a great review. I think the 103 sounds like the 102, but with a high end boost, but I'm over simplifying! I have an obsession with sibilance and to me the 103 sounds more sibilant, so I would prefer the 102. I have been searching reviews over the last few days for a neutral sounding vocal mic with minimal sibilance and have come down to Neumann 102 or Shure KSL32/42. Have you ever tried any of the Shure mics?

I swear I use tlm 102 and I hate the sibliance, the reason Im watching this is to hope 103 has less sibliance and I slightly think its less in 103 but I can still hear it, especially on my mobile.

Nice job! Are you tracking your vocals with plugins? I just bought the Neumann TLM 103 Anniversary Edition the black version .. with an Apollo Twin MK11 audio interface. But I'M not getting the sound quality I'M looking for ... your sound quality is way way better than mine. I'M a beginner at recording my own music .. learning from watching TH-cam tutorials.
i think everything boils down to your voice. if you got nice vocals a good mic will show it. same when you have a bad one. i suggest you have some else you think or know that has better vocals to test your mic and see if you arrangement produces a different result.
The gears you mentioned above are high quality. maybe the next thing is the quality of speakers and maybe the acoustic treatment of your room.

SM7B is really dark and low end focused. Nothing special other than enormously gain hungry also not worth its pricetag. Given a certain budget, much better go for TLM 102 with mid tier pre amp than SM7B with higher tier pre amp.

@@shloks.6494 I have the sm7b. I regret buying it. I bought the earthworks icon pro the day after the sm7b. I literally used it for a day. The icon pro sounded similar to tlm 103. I just had to return the 103 because it was too sensitive for my needs as far as room noise.
The 103 has a greater range and sounds more open. If I could hear the difference on some $99 Pixel Bud's Series A on a Z Fold 3 imagine what you're gonna hear on some actual headphones like the Audio Technica ATH-M70X running through an interface.

TLM102 has all the low frequencies cut that I would attenuate anyway. More useful to me to be honest.

i have to say, from a mere technical point of view, it's difficult to have a good feel of a microphone if you don't put it under a bit of "stress"... your singing style is lovely and the videos are really well done! .. but we need some volume maaan ;) .. just a humble suggestion, peace

Yeah my friend has the TLM 103 I just got a TML 102 but I do singing and screaming vocals the 102 is better for my needs! But nice comparison! Anyway you got a sub, thanks for doing this! Oh there is a mod you can do with the TLM 102 if you unscrew the ring you can take the internal pop filter, it clears it up.
that's how I feel. I got the 102. the Blur Bird has always been a goto mic for rap vocals and better than any mic for singing I've ever owned but I did spec comparisons for the 102 and 103 the 102 took me. first day singing into it, it made a world of difference and I love the smooth miss on my voice. best decision I've made
that 103 got that presence!

I heard a little more roundness with the 103 and more extensions, and a little flatter sounder with the 102
103 all the way. Has a nicer top end that really works with your voice.

102 has more depth & 103 more transparent, from what I hear in the speech. As for your high range voice 103 suits better.The difference is not too much though.How does 102 compare with WA 87 from warm audio?

I work with TLM103 since 2021. All records are in my YT channel. In my opinion is - TLM102 a little harsh in highs.
