In this Neumann TLM 103 test video, I cover the pros and cons of the mic and then share some examples of what the microphone sounds like in action.
The Neumann TLM 103 condenser microphone is a front-addressed, cardioid microphone. This means that the condenser microphone picks up sound from the front, and rejects sound from the back. You can use this polar pattern to your advantage in the home studio by pointing the rear end of the TLM 103 at any unwanted sound sources.
Because the Neumann TLM 103 large-diaphragm condenser microphone is a directional microphone, it has the proximity effect. This means that the closer the sound source is to the Neumann TLM 103 microphone, the more exaggerated the low-end frequencies will be. You can use this feature to your advantage by getting closer to the microphone if you want to beef up the body of your recording.
Sitting around $1,100, the Neumann TLM 103 mic is pretty expensive. However, I do not believe that the Neumann TLM 103 studio microphone is overpriced. I truly believe that the Neumann 103 microphone is worth every penny.
The frequency response for the Neumann 103 covers 20 Hz to 20 kHz. It begins with a low-end roll off around 70 Hz, and is pretty flat up until 3.5kHz. Between 5 kHz and 15 kHz, the Neumann 103 has a significant treble boost, giving the mic some extra brightness. The “air” frequencies are then rolled off.
This condenser mic review finishes off with some example of voice and guitar recordings that were captured with the Neumann TLM 103. The TLM 103 test recordings have a smooth tone and naturally cut through the mix because of the high-frequency boost in the TLM 103 frequency response.
The “Microfono Neumann TLM 103” is my go-to studio microphone so I’ve been wanting to do this microphone review for a while. I had a lot of fun making this video.

I prefer the TLM 49 for the warmth and sonic body, but the TLM 103 can always be ran into a tube preamp or eq for the same if not better quality recording. The benefit of the way the 103 sits in the mix makes it a stellar microphone.

One of the best parts about the 103 was that i essentially was able to sell it for almost the same money I paid for it as they hold their value. @@mariomaslik Its a night and day difference. But to answer your question me and a friend sometimes do a podcast and I place 1 mic on my side and the other on his side of the room and the adjustments are very different. The 103 is massive time bigger with more presence over the 102. It really is the little/big brother comparison. Theres nothing wrong with the 102 by any means but the 103 is in the big boy club for sure. Like many guitarists that get stuck with singing claim they hate their voice (myself), for the first time I didnt hate it quite as much. Its like when you play live I dont mind my voice but in a studio I cant stand it. But for the first time I thought it sounded more like how I hear it through a live PA. If that makes sense? Hope it helps.

What many people don't get is that with a Neumann TLM103 or a87, you might be spending a lot of money, carefully use it for 10 years, and then sell them for, say, 80% of the price you bought it for. So if you spend 2000 bucks on a Neumann, you can use it 10 years then sell it for 1500 bucks. You've paid 500 bucks for the right to use it for 10 years, 50 bucks a year. So, even I do really love the AT4040, which I've used for 18 years as a horse mic, always ready to go, and it still sounds great on everything compared to some mics that are 200 bucks but harsh. Problem is, you are going to lose that money. The AT4040 is ready to go, but it's still and will be there forever. Loses value. Neumann ones are an invest you can easily sell with no big impact on your finances. When it comes to the Neumann 103 you are basically getting pretty close to an u87, but without the switches and the omnidirectional stuff, which, if you want to record just vocals, you'll never use anyway. This mic also is built using the u87 capsule. If you live somewhere with high humidity you must keep it in one of these cabinets. I live in Japan and if you leave this mic set on the stand for days, you'll lose it's pristine sound straight away. Badass mic, don' even hesitate. Just buy it and you'll never regret it.

Hi Andy! Great Vid thanks so much! Just have a quick question, hope you can help. I'm planning to get the Neumann TLM 103 but not sure if I should get an audio interface (e.g. a Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 3rf Gen or the Audient iD14 - apparently they have decent preamps) or a preamp like the one you're using (kinda outta my budget though). I only need it for voice over work. Do you think an audio interface would do to compliment the Neumann TLM 103?

    • @AndyScalise
      @AndyScalise  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hey Amer Ali! Thanks for watching - I'm glad you found the video useful!
This mic is great for voiceovers! I used to talk on air at a Top 40 radio station and we usually used a TLM 103 for voicing the commercials for the other stations in the building.
Regarding the audio interface - Yes, the interface I'm using is kind of pricy, but it has a ton of inputs on it so you wouldn't need that much hardware if you're just doing voiceovers.
Either of the audio interfaces you mentioned will work fine. I looked those two interfaces up and I'm assuming you're looking for something in the $200-$400 range? Universal Audio does have other interfaces that are cheaper that would be perfect for you if you can stretch the budget a little. The audio quality is still top tier, too. I'd look up the 'Universal Audio Arrow Thunderbolt 3 Audio Interface' (its like $500) and do some research on one of those models. There are also previous models of those that you might even find cheaper. Hope this is helpful info!

Great video! Quick question... I have one of these mics. Never had any issue with it. Was using a presonus interface for years. However, Just upgraded to an apollo interface and now noticing a bit of distortion on louder somewhat close mic'd vocal tracks. Even at really low input levels. Doesn't do it when testing other mics through the apollo. I've never known this mic to be really sensitive. I've read online some saying it could be dust inside mic causing this? Have you found this mic to be super sensitive? If not, I'm thinking I need to send mine in for service at this point. Do you ever get any distortion when coming on to a vocal track? Like I said, input levels never even come close to clipping. Thanks!

You can use it live, but I probably wouldn’t unless it’s a small intimate set. This mic will pick up everything. For example, John Mayer uses this (or its the TLM 102 which is very similar) for his acoustic set on his “Where the Light Is” concert and it’s for the acoustic guitar. But then when the full band comes out, he doesn’t use it on anything I’m pretty sure.

The TLM-103 is a great microphone. It has incredibly high output level. It's super clean. You'll never hear a noisy preamp from this baby. But I don't personally have any. My buddy did at his studio. I did a fair amount of work at his studio. And got to use that.
But my personal go to microphones? Well? I had gotten this pair of Neumann, original, U-67's. Those sounded very nice. But only with the, TELEFUNKEN, EF-86, valve/tube. As all the others from, GE, RCA, Raytheon, Sylvania. I purchased pairs of them together. To find out which one sounded best. They all sounded like total dog shit. In comparison to the TELEFUNKEN's. Oh my God they sounded unusable! And my EF-86's were taking forever to warm up and making noise until they did. But I put them back in! They sounded way better. That any of those other American made brand-new, vacuum tubes. 30 years ago. When those new tubes were still available from those manufacturers. But I couldn't get the TELEFUNKEN because they were already gone. That was a huge bummer. There are some NOS TELEFUNKEN EF-86's now available. But only since the Internet. This was before the Internet. In the late 1980s. And I was dumbfounded. How horrible those American tubes sounded.
It was due to the loss of, TELEFUNKEN vacuum tubes. When I decided to walk away from vacuum to gear for the most part. Because this is stupid. When you can't get the right tubes that sound good. Therefore? No reason to use those that don't. And their accompanying microphones they are associated with.
And so after my U-67's. I picked up a pair of U-87's. And a pair of KM-86's. And I really think I liked the, KM-86's, best.
I really love all of my Ribbon Microphones, also. From my modern-day BEYER, M-160's and my M-130 Figure of 8 Bidirectional version. Along with my vintage SHURE 300 and my pair of RCA, 77-DX's. And some of my other go to microphones. I can't live without my Ribbons. Nothing else works like them or sounds like them. They are unique. They are also neither in phase nor out of phase. With both, condenser and dynamic microphones. They are either 90° or 270° off from condenser and dynamic microphones. And why using 2 of those together. Gets a great combined sound. Because it's additive. Nothing cancels. You get it bigger than life. With a 57 and a ribbon. A very popular combination.
But really? When it comes to Go To Microphone? It has to be the SM-57/58's. I can do anything with those. And those, alone. They're the most versatile, most rugged, greatest sounding, best bang for the buck ever produced. And that's all you need. That's the only microphone, you need. In fact I don't want anything better. I want that sound. Everybody knows, that sound. Everybody loves, that sound. Without knowing where that sound comes from? But I know.
And so a lot of my recording and mixing that I do. I do based upon, Familiarity of Sound. That is to say. I will use certain microphones. Because everybody knows the sound of those cheap, microphones. And they do a great job. And people will embrace that sound. Without actually knowing why? Because it's, Familiar. And that's why I don't want better. I want that. It's part of the Psychology I use in my Engineering.
And while you might think that's funny? I am a History Making, Multiple Major Music Award Nominee. Under Best Engineered, categories. And a 20 year Veteran of, NBC-TV News in Washington DC. And yes. I have worked directly with our POTUS''s. And all of our elected officials. Foreign dignitaries. Sports celebrities. You name it. And name, them. It was pretty wild working in major, Television Network News. Billions of people have heard my work for decades. And never knew it. I remain, Anonymous.
And so some of us just do our thing. Forever and ever.

Yeah, ultimately if you're going to buy a $1000+ mic, you should invest in a solid interface. You can buy used/refurbished gear though and get a great deal. I'd look into anything from Universal Audio and try to see if there are older versions of their interfaces. I'm using a Universal Audio Apollo Quad and they don't make this version anymore. You do not have to spend as much as I did - 99% of the time I don't use more than 2 inputs.
