The 103 is just like the 102 with a slight upper mid / air boost. Give the 102 a couple dbs of eq and I think you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference in a blind shoot out
Great voice, bruh! Thanks for this expertly-done comparison. Though my vocal style is different, I can clearly see how the 103 most definitely is the better pick because it captures more depth in the voice. It's as if you get a more complete, living "picture" of the voice, whereas the 102 sounds contained. Thanks again, and much success in all you do.
I like your music Carl. Great voice! I liked the TLM-102 on your voice when it was solo but in the track the TLM-103 really helped your voice cut through the mix.
Thank you for the kind words, checking out the video and commenting!! I always say source material matters! Out of context I do think the 102 sounds great but in context the 103 soars on its own for multiple reasons! Thanks again for checking out the video!
103 had added a little more air and bright colour to your voice. Mid range was smoother and resonant too. 102 was ok, but noticeably darker, and lacked brightness and air up top.
This is awesome man. Thanks for the comparison. A lot of people hate on Neumann for the price point but damn you really get what you pay for. Been using a TLM 102 and it does everything I throw at it. Considering adding a TLM 103 to the collection.
Thanks for checking out the video and commenting! I totally agree. At some point, luxury brands have to separate themselves from the non-luxury brands. I have no issues with my 102 and 103. I plan on getting my hands on a TLM49 as well.
First off- fantastic vocal! You could make music on any mic with that instrument! The TLM 103 is a better vocal mic cuz it's got some more air and presence. The sound is more upfront and shiny. The 102 was sort of designed as more of a versatile instrument mic. It's tiny size was to help with placement on drum kits, and other weird places. On your vocal, it's a little dull and 2d.
Thanks for checking out the video! And thanks for the musicality appreciation! I’ve personally gotten solid results with the 102 when using an outboard preamp and some external processing. I like antelope pres for their transparency but a good mic/pre/processing combo on the front is hard to beat! Thanks for commenting!!
@@hannahpaigeduyongco5714 you’re wrong about it being a “podcast” mic. Neumann themselves call it the “home studio microphone” so what u said it completely false. The tlm 102 is obviously for recording music its a studio condenser microphone which was not made to be a “podcast mic”. The foam inside is to help with sibilance and stuff like that
It's size doesn't mean that it was meant for instruments, but it of course can be used for that and I'm sure the size helps, but what you say is factually false. Neumann themselves market this as a more affordable home/project studio mic with the expectation that it will be used for singing/vocals/voice over/narration, etc. and still be able to get that Neumann quality.
dang dude, you're good! love the sound and the vibe from these two mics. you've probably already mastered, but your beautiful voice needs to be brought up in the mix center stage.
@@nhojcam thanks for the kind words, checking out the video and stopping by the channel. For all of my mic reviews, the entire concept is not mixed. My intent is to display the mics and their characteristics. You can tell by the lack of leveling and inconsistencies in the performance. The final version is on digital platforms though. This is a great review on both TLM 102 and 103. You done an amazing job of showing what both mics are capable of, let me say I love your voice it’s crazy 🔥 I’m now a fan of your work. I think both 102 and 103 sounds good 👌🏿 I needed a good review like this one to make it easier to choose what mic I want. I really appreciate you for the review.
Not sure how I missed this comment but a definitely appreciate the kind words and the support! Stopping by the channel, checking out the video and commenting goes a long way. Can’t say thank you enough
I saw this video a year ago when i bought my TLM103, i keep coming back just hear this man sing this beautifull song....because in my humble opinion he went harder than even bobby hebb. I aint here for the review but littealy the music. LMAO please release a full version of this song
Haha I appreciate the love. My kids say I need to release a longer version. I did finish this version and it’s up on digital platforms! Much respect for the support
Wow! It's really helpful to hear a real male vocalist test out these two mics instead of a podcaster/broadcast spoken test. Switching between the comparison track really showed how you responded to the mic's characteristics. Personally, I preferred your performance on the TLM 102...the 103 seems flatter, with less feeling.
Thanks for checking out the video and commenting. I tracked both mics at the same time with one take. It’s been over a year since I posted this so I don’t remember which mic I monitored with but the response you’re noting was to the same mic the entire time. I didn’t listen in detail until I synced the audio with the visual.
I don't know what it is about the 102 but I absolutely love it, even compared to the U87, I've owned both of them but the 102 just stands out with its clarity and warmth. Definitely the best mic
Im pretty sure that in a blind test most people wouldn't notice any difference. I at least had a hard time with it on my monitors. Could also be due to TH-cam. I like my TLM102. However, I am considering getting a Warm Audio WA-251. Great comparison & video! Thank you!
I appreciate you for checking out the video and commenting. I do believe blind tests would surprise A LOT of people. When you see a mic/brand during the performance, opinions are formed. Great comment and perspective! Thanks again!
103 is more airy, so seems more detailed but also more sibilant. 102 sounds like it has more body, fuller, less airy. I think i prefer the a bit darker sound of the 102.
Thanks for checking out the video! Those components make the difference in post. I try to make decisions on mic I use based on what’s desired in the source material. A good mic, pre and comp combo would have me using either mic immediately but they definitely both can handle their own. Appreciate your comments!
@@51Strefa51 Without a doubt! It’s a workhorse for me and I’ve used it quite a bit on final vox for me and other vocalists, as well as other instruments.
@@CarlMooreMusic also it sits better after mix? I heard also about tlm102 mod where you put off a foam from inside of capsule and then mic gets really good I’m still hesitating between those two because of my deep low tone pitch voice , I would like to use it mainly for rap vocals but I don’t know if 103 is not too bright and too sibilant
I think how it “sits in the mix” is impacted behind the signal chain. In this example, I’m using clean preamps as well as no EQ/compression on the front end. I always track with an external preamp, some form of EQ even if it’s filtering, and compression. Most times it’s serial compression. That definitely plays a part on where the vox naturally sits in the mix and any saturation from those other outboard pieces help to compliment a mics natural tone. I have an upper register but my lower register is a little more prominent. So I’m considered a baritone with a range. The source material matters but I’d recommend either mic as an option to get the job done. I’m not familiar with that mod for the 102. I’d have to check it out.
I usually don't comment on channels with my main channel, but felt the need because I love the Neumann mic lineup and because this was a great comparison. Nice voice, bro! First off, it has a lot to do with what headphones you are using while listening to this. I have a pair of top-notch headphones, and to me, the TLM 103 sounds a lot better, crisp, and brighter. There is a reason why the TLM 103 is more expensive. Pay more, and you get more, the majority of the time. You're getting a high-quality industry-standard mic when you purchase the 103. If you go to major music recording studios as well as professional film studios, you will find the 103, not the 102. That right there tells it all. BTW. I own the 103, and it's freakishly AMAZING! Since I am all about quality, I needed the best for my narrations in my animations and films. Anyways...keep up the great work and good luck with your channel! 👍
Much appreciation for checking out the video and the kind words. I’ve often looked at the 103 as a stripped down version of the u87 (and of course totally different topology). A lot of the studio’s I’ve been in choose a u87 over a lot of mics. Of course there’s a fair amount of tube condensers that are used and other FET condensers that are great options for V/O or audio recording. I’m a firm believe that the vocal chain plays a big part too. I wouldn’t typically track anything dry like I did in this example. And character preamps, along with processing makes a noticeable difference sonically. Again, thanks for the compliments and even checking out the video.
@@CarlMooreMusic I have the 102 and a apollo twin interface. In your opinion, would it be worth paying the $1,100 to upgrade to the 103? Would the difference for hiphop be that big to justify paying that?
@@ryanreedtv3242 so my apologies for the SUPER late response. But the 103 and the 102 are voiced different from each other. I think some see the chronological order without viewing them as two different mics tonally. I would say the 103 has a more prevalent top end that ends up being desirable. I think the low end on it is tighter as well. So if that’s a tone you’re in need of, go for it. That’s essentially how I view all mics I purchase.
Thanks for posting I enjoy what you post keep posting it’s nice to hear a good representation of what a mic could or might sound like to all those out there looking to hear before they buy while on there search and quest for good gear 👌
The 102 has a bump on the low end that sounds cool but you get a fullness out of the 103 that I feel would work for more voices overall. The 102 also has something on the high end that I can't really name but it sounds almost not broad enough on the high end boost.
I personally prefer the low end of the 102 over the 103. If they were to make that adjustment, I believe it would change the nature of the 103 in a positive direction in my opinion. Thanks for checking out the video and stopping by the channel
@CarlMooreMusic Definitely think so. I love your videos. I would love to see more Mojave mics if possible. I feel like they took Neumann's sound and added a thickness to the midrange. I love the Mojave MA-50 but I don't see it anywhere on TH-cam .
@flashiestfreshman I’m got the 201 fet and I like it. Sizzle on that top end but it’s a solid mic. I just need to get my hands on some of royers other condensers. I am working on a few videos of his ribbons
Much appreciation for the kind words and checking out the video! I think tuning touch ups are needed but when the entire part is digitally constructed, that’s a bit much
I’ve had limited experience with the 107 and I felt like it was, interestingly enough, a different voicing than what I expected from the Neumann line. That being said, I’ve seen a 103 used extensively for voice over work. I think you’d be fine with that option. But maybe try them both and see which works best on your voice you look to capture, in the environment you’ll be capturing in
Humbled by the compliment. The sound signature of the 102 either works for people or it doesn't. For me, it works in the right context and the source, source material, front end and converters matter! Thanks again for interacting with me on the channel!
They’re both solid mics and perfect for any mic locker! Have you ever checked out AMS or zZounds? They provide payment options to obtain audio gear. Thank you for checking out the video and commenting!
In my opinion the 103 sounded better solo but 102 sounded better mixed it sounded more smooth and had more color. I like watching videos like this knowing I’d never buy either mic even IF I could afford it
Thanks for checking the video out. For objective untainted purposes, neither mic was processed when the full track is introduced. All of the vox are raw to give people a sense of the natural tone of the mics. If there was a way to purchase either mic, would you?
@@CarlMooreMusic if I COULD buy either mic I still wouldn’t want to bcuz if I’m spending that much money on a microphone I shouldn’t have to spend extra time mixing my vocals🤷🏾♂️ I liked the review tho you sound really good
Thanks for checking out the channel and commenting! I hear ALOT of bad things about the 103 and I just don’t get it. I think it’s a solid mic that gets the job done.
Music is killer. Also, great demo. Couldn't hear too much of a difference. I think I slightly preferred the 103 in the raw test. I know the 103 handles bumps a bit better according to other reviews I've seen. 102 apparently needs a shock mount.
"I feel like making MusiQ" [Soulchild]! 😉 Your voice reminds me a lot of him. Either way, thanks for your great videos. I'm aimlessly wandering around the mic jungle, and your videos have helped a lot - also, huge props on your amazing vocals!
Both sound good but I don’t hear a $500 difference other than a little brighter sound that can easily be achieved in post. Guess I’ll stick with my Lauten Audio Clarion
Hahah, I personally feel like the 103 is overpriced to be a single patterned, no feature microphone. While it gives good results, as you clearly pointed out, it’s not drastically different from the “step below mic” in its series. I’ve got an Atlantis FC387 and I definitely dig it. How do you like your Clarion? Thanks for checking out the video and commenting!
I definitely agree! It certainly depends on the source material, the source being captured and the desired outcome. I’d do two totally different things at the mixing point with both mics. ✊🏾✊🏾thanks for chiming in and checking this out!!!!
Thanks for checking out the video and commenting! I appreciate your perspective. I’m honestly not sure anyone in the last 50-55yrs of RnB, soul, funk, band music, live instrumentation could say that Stevie Wonder isn’t an influence. However Sunny is a Marvin Gaye song. Musiq Soulchild sampled it in the his song “Just Friends” back in 2000. I referenced that flavor in this arrangement (music and vocals). And then I added my own expression to it.
Great vocals really! Bobby Hebb isn't it. That wrote Sunny? He was in a Salem MA music store called Bill's Music back in the late 90's and when he left, the owner Bill said "That was Bobby Hebb" the guy that wrote "Sunny" It was pretty cool :) Yah you are so right about Stevie Wonder as an influence.
Definitely an option! For variance between the lead and background, I’d probably use the 102 on lead and the 103 on BGVs. The more prevalent roll off on the low end seems more appropriate for the bgvox in my opinion. But thanks for checking out the video and commenting!
You have an amazing voice Brother!Buying the Tlm in my opinion is just a waste of money..It only has got a better low end .. which i can adjust with EQ..Tlm 102 nailed it! period!
The more you pay, the less you get; the TLM 103 sounds a bit better, in terms of presence and richness but just a bit and does it justify to pay 400€ more which can be solved in the mix?
I’ve always been a fan of what sounds good sonically, regardless of the brand name attached and regardless of folks opinions. After a certain price point (for components and topology), mics are good mics.... they just don’t have the popular badge on them. Thanks for chiming in and watching!
Well, maybe my ears are different, but I also hear a better bass on the 103 even in the mix. An no, eq will no make the mics sound the same. I have a pair of TLM 102 and I think the 103 price difference is noticeable.
Simply delicious vocals. I'm torn between the two mics right now. I have a deep voice with a touch of nasal sibilance so am leaning to the more forgiving 102, but my vocal ability is riding in the wake of your superb control and feel for emotions. Great vid, thanks mate. I'm still no clearer which to go for but this comparison kept it real. They tried to make me sing metal when all I wanted to be was Nat King Cole :)
Yeah I'm torn between both. The u87 (or Advanced Audio CM87 is what I have) is too harsh and bright on me with too much distortion, if the 103 is like it in the harshness then it's the 102 for me, my voice is quite bassy and boomy with harsh tones too, so I'm thinking a transformerless mic with less presence is the way to go. It's such a hard vocal tone to work with, a never ending search for me. Advanced Audio's u89 clone is working for me as far as harshness is concerned, but then I think the transformer makes it slightly thick and unclear
@@orangemaniabrother2232 I went with the 102. Cost is s factor. But which ever you go for is a cracking mic! I think the 102 is the more forgiving option. I am conscious of my expression of sibilant sounds which just stick out over plosives. I was concerned the 103 might just be too revealing. This is kind of against the advice given to me by a producer who reckoned the 103 was the best mic for voice over work. All very well, but it's what you feel comfortable with in terms of rendition and cost. The 102 is a little rolled off perhaps but I would rather deal with its signature than the 103.
@@tiresiasreviews8829 I have c414xlii, it does wonders for clarity and fixes the thick bassy sound and the distortion but it's still a bit harsh, I figured the 103 would be similar so I might go with 102
@@orangemaniabrother2232 From what I have read the AKG you have is a superb mic, but I have never used one. My experience is rather limited to Shure mics for rehearsal and performance. I can't compare it properly to a 102. The only way is to try both side by side with your voice and it's individual identity. That being said, I would love to try your existing mic it's held in high regard. It's a bloody nightmare trying to choose and compare. It's like all audio equipment, so subjective. Just don't get into luxury watches or headphones and and tube amps. Take the blue pill and get a Rode, Seiko, Little Dot and some Sennheiser HD25s :) Sorry, I know, for guys like us, that just isn't going to cut it. I wish I could just stick and not twist.

Great style in your good voice! More presence & mid range capture on TLM 103 ,but I still love the brightness & crisp sound of the 102.Maybe a combination of both would be the best ! Whoever played the keyboard on that track is just too good! Wanna hire him for my church. 😊
Much appreciation for checking out the video and the kind words! I actually used both mics on the final version of this song. I also played keys on this too. I play keys and program on all of my production.
@@CarlMooreMusic Man your chord progression was awesome. Most jazz players are good on Major songs as opposed to minor. You have an awesome God given talent for sure.WIsh you do instruction videos too on jazz playing.Pls let me know if you have any. Thanks
Both mic’d sound great! The 103 cut through much better. I’m trying to decide which mic to get. I love the more natural sound of the 102 but man the 103 sounded so much better in the final mix to me. Musiq is one of my favorite artists, definitely got that vibe going on. 👍🏾
I’ve always said source material makes the difference! In this particular situation, I agree with you, the 103 cut through a tad better for this track. So when actually mixing, I’d have less to do on the top end of the 103. But I’d certainly use the 102. Maybe at some point, I’ll go back and actually mix the vox and post them. Thanks for the love!!! Musiq always has been dope and he sampled this song for just friends and it was fitting!
Much appreciation!!! Folks say anything on TH-cam nowadays so I like to take the time and acknowledge those who are kind and complimentary. Thank you for stopping the channel, checking out the video and interacting here in the comments.
Very helpful video. From what I can tell in this video and others, the TLM 103 has more top end. I'm actually borrowing one from a friend and loving it. The top end is "sparkly" without being piercing. I was wondering if I could save a bit of money by getting the 102 instead. But it seems like if I want that specific sparkly sound I might need the 103? Apparently, there's foam over the capsule in the 102 and if you remove that it brightens it up a bit. But without a way to test that, maybe I should just stick to the mic I know I love.
Thanks for checking out the video and commenting! I’ve recently removed the foam insert from my current 102. Obviously that will have an altering effect on the tonal characteristic but I will say, IMHO, the 102 is a SOLID mic. I’ve NEVER had issues with it (foam in/out). Additionally, in these videos, I’ve refrained from using outboard gear in the chain, but I definitely track my final vocals with some external preamp, pultec style EQ and serial compression (depending on the source material and source being captured). Those components can help to bring out the qualities I need (more top end, and etc…). I’ve got got more to say on this topic. But I’ll stop here
It honestly depends on the source. I like the natural sounding low end on the 102 and in this source material example, I liked the 103 better on the lead. I slightly tamed the sibilance but the mids were cool too me and it felt better with my eyes closed. So I went with it for the lead and the 102 for the BGvs
I see one cable is a Mogami. Is the other cable of the same quality? Because I notice a huge difference in the way my mics sound using a Mogami as opposed to just a decent cable . Especially live. Great vocals . You were locked in nice.
The low end cut on the 102 isn’t as high as the 103 so I fee like it’s a more natural representation of the lows. I’ve seen opinions that the 102 is vastly inferior to the 103 but I just don’t have that experience with that mic. I get solid results with both. Thanks for checking out the video and commenting!
@@CarlMooreMusic I mostly do live sound, so studio condensers aren't really my field of expertise, tho I'm very used to hearing microphones (obviously). And yes, the TLM103 does sound better, especially in the context of music. But then again, you expect that when it costs, what, almost double the other?
Good stuff! I’m a firm believer that making sure the mic is best for the source being captured, and there’s good components all around (preamp, Eq, comp). When that’s considered as well as a solid performance that’s captured, certain mic differences are just the “icing on the cake”
@@CarlMooreMusic sure! Getting it right at the source is the most important, then finding a mic that compliments said source is equally important. Then you just continue down the signal chain.
Thanks for checking out the video and the kind words! I like both mics and get solid results with either one on just about any source. Thus far I think I’ve posted about 15 mic review videos. Another one will be up and in a day or so. Check it out and let me know what you think. Thanks for the interaction!
@@MattDxstined Thank you for watching and even commenting on the video! I would agree that the 103 has a bit more characteristics I’d utilize for the lead vox in this context. I think I’d end up using the 102 on the BKG vox for tonal variance.
brother, this is an amazing review. Thank you so much. I'm a fan now. Action speaks louder than words. Nothing beats hearing the mics put to the test, not just talking about their differences. Where can I buy your version of Sunny. It is one of my favorite songs!!
Definitely appreciate you for checking out the video and commenting! I agree, tech specs are crucial to be informed of but nothing beats a practical example. Working on a short EP of cover songs. Sunny will definitely be apart of. I’ll keep you posted! Again, much appreciation for your interaction and kind words!
Appreciate the love and the suggestions. All the mics I review, I own. So I’m just waiting to get my hands on the L22. Once I do, I’ll definitely be posting up!
I wanna hear your thoughts dude? For me the 103 cuts into the mix way better with the clarity in the highs and high mids, and for some reason that makes my ears feel that the bass end is also better articulated. Are these completely different caps? Honestly the 102 didn't have the Neumann ting... the 103 was just that 3% better all round. I feel like I would have to add EQ to bring out the subject with 102, but the raw tone of the 103 is just brighter and fuller. Super subtle, maybe not £400 worth of EQ... What do you think??? Also stunning vocal dude, that acapella is glorious.
Much appreciation for the kind words! I’ve somewhat concluded on this that I’d use the 103 for lead vox and the 102 for BGVs. I like how the the top end sits on the 103 in this example but I do feel like the roll off on the 102 makes the low end on it sound more prevalent, if needed. Ultimately, I think they’re both solid mics that will certainly get the job done. In the context of music, we don’t hear them switched like it is here and there’s a fair deal more processing (even if natural sounding) than it is here too. So no one would hear them in this type of comparison fashion
@@CarlMooreMusic That's very interesting, I totally get where you're coming from. They are really similar, but something tells me the 103 is worth it. I bet stacking them top and bottom would be insane for literally anything. Imagine both of them in an upright piano?!
thanks for sharing man , i was thinking about my 102 , i wanted to know if i made a wrong choice , the difference is marginal it can be made up by preamp , just smoother air on top end .
Thanks for checking out the video and commenting. The 102 and 103 are both solid choices in my opinion and you won't go wrong with either. I did purchase the 103 after I purchased the 102 but I wasn't looking to upgrade, as I was just curious of the tonal characteristics. Needless to say, I won't be getting rid of either mic.
Nice voice, nice test! both sound great, for a male singer classical crossover/broadway voice which is better? Do you have a reference about sennheiser mk4 vs tlm2 or tlm3 ?? Thank you.
Thanks for the love and checking out the video. I really prescribe to the idea that a lot of factors are involved when choosing a mic/voice combo. I think the song/source material plays a major factor. The tonal intention is a factor as well (clean, gritty/edgy, etc..). The preamp used totally plays a part as well as any other processing in the chain. With all that being said, the 102 has less of a cut on the low end so that could be beneficial for maybe a thinner vocalist (source). This is my opinion so use it for what it’s worth but more often than not, I like the way the top end of the 103 sits naturally over the 102. That being said, I’ve had the 102 for 5yrs I think and have used it on pretty much everything (lead vocals to shakers). I’ll NEVER get rid of it and I’d gladly recommend it. I haven’t had the chance to try out the mk4 but If I can get my hands on one, I’ll gladly do a review.
Got a nice "Neo-soul Musicsouldchildish" vibe to it. Nice job man!! I'm surprised but the 103 seems to sound more like a record than the 102. Didn't think there would be a noticeable difference, but the 103 sounds more familiar quality wise. If that makes any sense. Peace!
Totally appreciate you for checking out the video and commenting. I definitely understand what you’re saying. I also think solid results can be achieved with either mic. Just different brushes to help paint a picture. Thanks again for checking out the video

the tlm 102 was designed for podcast, which is why the foam is inside the grill
Here’s a Spotify link but you can listen to it on any outlet you regularly listen to digital music:

Wow! When you have a voice this good, it doesnt matter what microphone you use.
@@wh0tube Thank you much for the kind words! I definitely try my best to get the music/source material right first.
By far the best review on the TLM's just got my 102! Blessings!
The minute this guy starts singing I instantly forget about the mic test. I have to remind myself I am here for that. Wow. Smooth voice.
Hahah definitely appreciate the kind words! Thank you for checking out the video and stopping by the channel!

I don't know what it is about the 102 but I absolutely love it, even compared to the U87, I've owned both of them but the 102 just stands out with its clarity and warmth. Definitely the best mic
I like the tlm102 on your voice. It seems to fit and not to be overly bright and clear

I totally!!! Appreciate that! Just striving to provide something for others looking to add to their mic - lockers!

After watching, hard to decide. Many praised the 103 over the 02. Just wonder how many would fail had it been a blind test.
Much appreciation for you watching the video and commenting. I plan to incorporate blind tests in a few upcoming videos

Excellent review and great voice and tone as well. Been looking at these mics for a while and will likely go for it in the next couple of months.
Thank you for the kind words! These are both solid mics and I believe you’d be solid with either mic.
Your voice is sooo smooth!!! You remind me of musiq soulchild
Humbled and I definitely appreciate the kind words.
I have a 102 with a warm audio 73 British eq mic pre and all I hear is magic!!!
Most definitely!!! I run the same set up frequently and am happy with the results

Two words for you Carl, liquid gold voice
Thanks for the kind words!! Just trying to work on the craft and provide another perspective with the microphone series.
@@CarlMooreMusic after so much opinions would you still choose tlm103 over 102?
@@51Strefa51 Without a doubt! It’s a workhorse for me and I’ve used it quite a bit on final vox for me and other vocalists, as well as other instruments.
@@CarlMooreMusic also it sits better after mix?
I heard also about tlm102 mod where you put off a foam from inside of capsule and then mic gets really good
I’m still hesitating between those two because of my deep low tone pitch voice , I would like to use it mainly for rap vocals but I don’t know if 103 is not too bright and too sibilant
Oh damnnn... It's Dark & Twisted on here? I am a huge fan! I don't think he knows who just commented on his channel yo!
@@theprofessor5689 your nickname is similar to mine
Thanks for posting I enjoy what you post keep posting it’s nice to hear a good representation of what a mic could or might sound like to all those out there looking to hear before they buy while on there search and quest for good gear 👌
Much appreciation for you following the channel and interacting with the me! Definitely means a lot
OMG it’s so nice to hear a voice without Autotune all over it ... I have the tlm103 and love it ... 😃 great vid
im in between tlm 103 and tlm 107 which one u think i should get for spoken word?
Much appreciation for the kind words and checking out the video! I think tuning touch ups are needed but when the entire part is digitally constructed, that’s a bit much
I’ve had limited experience with the 107 and I felt like it was, interestingly enough, a different voicing than what I expected from the Neumann line. That being said, I’ve seen a 103 used extensively for voice over work. I think you’d be fine with that option. But maybe try them both and see which works best on your voice you look to capture, in the environment you’ll be capturing in
You're Awsome bro I think the 102 sounds smoother n warmer
Humbled by the compliment. The sound signature of the 102 either works for people or it doesn't. For me, it works in the right context and the source, source material, front end and converters matter!
Thanks again for interacting with me on the channel!

Music is killer. Also, great demo. Couldn't hear too much of a difference. I think I slightly preferred the 103 in the raw test. I know the 103 handles bumps a bit better according to other reviews I've seen. 102 apparently needs a shock mount.

TLM102 sounds better solo but the 103 sounds better in the mix. I'd say it depends on if the buyer is looking to do podcasts/spoken word vs. music.
I definitely agree! It certainly depends on the source material, the source being captured and the desired outcome. I’d do two totally different things at the mixing point with both mics. ✊🏾✊🏾thanks for chiming in and checking this out!!!!

The source and the goal always matters! Thanks for commenting!
To be honest I think it’s the other way around
Awesome voice. Got a Musiq SoulChild kinda vibe going TLM103 is my favorite mic.💪💯🔥😎
Definitely appreciate the kind words for real!
For this style, imho, the 102 was more soulful and smooth. Great vocals. Was Stevie Wonder an influence?
@@ejh1281 Bobby Hebb did write it but I’ve typically referenced Marvin Gaye’s version.
@@CarlMooreMusic Haven't heard the Marvin Gaye version but will most certainly check it out. You do a great job, I know that!!

I think I prefer the TLM 102 to your tone. More bottom end and less nasal. A bit of eq on low frequencies would make it more balanced, though.
Definitely an option! For variance between the lead and background, I’d probably use the 102 on lead and the 103 on BGVs. The more prevalent roll off on the low end seems more appropriate for the bgvox in my opinion.
But thanks for checking out the video and commenting!

I think the color the affects the tone, that’s why they produce it in 2 colors, dark and bright.
You got a really nice voice man.
Definitely appreciate the kind words!
Best mic review ever
Take the blue pill and get a Rode, Seiko, Little Dot and some Sennheiser HD25s :)
Sorry, I know, for guys like us, that just isn't going to cut it. I wish I could just stick and not twist.

The 103 did cuz through better BUT it’s not like you can’t turn the vocal up if it doesn’t cut through the right way…

Dang. You killed it man!
But I’ll stop here
@@CarlMooreMusic after all the processing which mic do you end up choosing 102 or 103?
It honestly depends on the source.
I like the natural sounding low end on the 102 and in this source material example, I liked the 103 better on the lead. I slightly tamed the sibilance but the mids were cool too me and it felt better with my eyes closed. So I went with it for the lead and the 102 for the BGvs
I see one cable is a Mogami. Is the other cable of the same quality? Because I notice a huge difference in the way my mics sound using a Mogami as opposed to just a decent cable . Especially live. Great vocals . You were locked in nice.
Both cables are magomi cables. Thanks for checking out the video and commenting.
The 103 is definitely brithter and more detailed in the highs, but the 102 also sounds really good. They're both really close tho
Very interesting mic. You have a very nice voice. Hope to see more of your reviews!

the tlm 103 is basically more articulate and confident/bigger sounding while tlm 102 has less presence
@@MattDxstined Thank you for watching and even commenting on the video! I would agree that the 103 has a bit more characteristics I’d utilize for the lead vox in this context. I think I’d end up using the 102 on the BKG vox for tonal variance.

Appreciate the love and the suggestions. All the mics I review, I own. So I’m just waiting to get my hands on the L22. Once I do, I’ll definitely be posting up!
Wow, the song is actually great and the vocal is great.
Thanks for checking out the video and the kind words!
The 103 has been around for 70 years. The 102 is relatively new (and $400 cheaper).
Great video. Helluva voice Brotha! Same music genres.
Much appreciation for the kind words and checking out the video!
