This show treated its female characters amazingly. Even the love interest, Winry, is well written in how she isn't tagging along, taking up screentime and being useless. If she is present, then it's because she is truly relevant to the story.

It helps that Winry is a lot *more* than just a "love interest" and actually a character in her own right with actual personality, wants, and opinions--even a character arc and, gasp, development. Sadly, so many "characters" who are love interests, whether male or female, can't nearly that much since they tend to only shallowly exist for and revolve a more prominent character as a hanger-on and too often a "reward" (or as a "confirmation" the character is heterosexual). This is true even if the love interest has basically nothing in common with the other character and has zero "chemistry" with them. (It's part of the reason I've come to hate romantic subplots since like 99% of them are written atrociously.)

So what if she's a girl, she has a no-nonsense attitude and is a pragmatic thinker, who is also *actually* loyal to her country and cares for the subordinates that reach her expectations. These are Olivier's characteristics, her personality, what makes her a character. Not bullshit like, "she's a woman, so she has to put up a tough act and be a bitch so the men can understand she means business" or whatever the fuck people that only look skin-deep will say when they see Olivier do anything. The fact that she's a *she* is secondary to her character. Out in Briggs, and in the wilderness, all that matters is survival. What will care if you're a man or a woman? In the wild, you're just meat. In the environment Briggs is in, you're a weak, hairless bear. If you can swing a sword or shoot a gun, you can fight, you can survive. Everything else comes secondary.
Man, it didn’t click the first time I saw this when I was a teenager, but this kill is brutal. Stabbing through the arm, slashing his chest open, and then essentially burying him alive in wet concrete. Olivier doesn’t mess around and I love her for it.

if I know one thing about this show is to Never question the higher ups especially those that are commanding you if you value your life in Briggs army as a wise person once said “it is better to have the devil be your ally then to feel his wrath”
The thing about Briggs is that it's very remote and extremely isolated from all aspects of central command. If ANY of them want to last long here, they HAVE TO work together as a cohesive fighting unit. Up to this moment, Commander Armstrong had played her cards close to her chest after the Central Command brass started trying to make their move on Briggs, while the soldiers under her were starting to be skeptical of her loyalty after several men were horribly injured in the tunnels fighting off Sloth. This scene effectively showed off her true feelings about Central (absolutely despises their disgusting weakness and their callous disregard for the lives of those under their command, but can't afford to show those feelings openly just yet) and to Briggs (she still stands firmly by their side, and trusts them completely to get their jobs done properly) while also showing off her fighting capability in a 1v1.
My favorite Olivier Armstrong moment was when a soldier showed up with a squadron and said he had orders to kill her (and seemed willing to do it), and she just said, "never mind that. I'm giving the orders now" and they all obeyed.

Her decisiveness and pragmatism is the reason why she was the only anime crush I had as an adult person. Unparalleled efficaciousness for a grounded character. 10/10, would not object to crushing again.

One thing I love about Briggs is it demonstrates something people often forget about survival of the fittest: community makes us stronger. The Briggs soldiers are fiercely loyal to each other and to General Armstrong.
After so long of not knowing who they can trust in their own organization and authorities, it always feels so good on every rewatch how the boys get such a powerhouse of an ally of Olivier.

This anime is perfection. I loved and anticipated each episode of FMAB. The story is consistent and its hard magic system had become a basis for fantasy writers. Also, this anime showcases women differently than most anime in terms of physical appearance, most women in anime are skinny with big boobs or just skinny (Sakura in Naruto lol), but in FMAB, you see plus-sized women. I'll have to rewatch this soon.
Many of the best written female characters in anime are all in FMAB: Olivier Mira Armstrong, Riza Hawkeye, Izumi Curtis, Lan Fan, May Chang, Winry Rockbell, Maria Ross, and Madam Christmas are all badass and complex in their own ways.
@@12jswilson I think you and the OP have probably not seen too many anime then. There are plenty of female characters that are well written. To be actually fair, most FMAB women are pretty weak in comparison to many female protagonist anime. The Twelve Kingdoms, The Garden of Sinners, are some anime with female protagonists that are far better written than what you get in FMAB. In fact, FMAB female characters are no different than what you get in One Piece in terms of character depth. They do not have much depth apart from a flimsy backstory and an attitude. Only difference is the design of the appearance. But, appearance design of a character is a different matter. If you for a military anime like even Attack on Titan, the female costumes are not that different from FMAB standards.

Honestly one of the most satisfying scenes in the entire series. He was just a side character, but Raven facilitated some of the most tense scenes in show, and he gets everything he deserves in this sequence.

I actually like her dialogue in the original, because she calls him a geezer rather than a traitor as she kills him. It fits more into her character, as her philosophy is survival of the fittest, and her biggest problem with the higher ups is that they are all weak cowards who are willing to sacrifice lives without risking their own or having to get their hands dirty

One thing I love about Briggs is it demonstrates something people often forget about survival of the fittest: community makes us stronger. The Briggs soldiers are fiercely loyal to each other and to General Armstrong.

After so long of not knowing who they can trust in their own organization and authorities, it always feels so good on every rewatch how the boys get such a powerhouse of an ally of Olivier.

This anime is perfection. I loved and anticipated each episode of FMAB. The story is consistent and its hard magic system had become a basis for fantasy writers. Also, this anime showcases women differently than most anime in terms of physical appearance, most women in anime are skinny with big boobs or just skinny (Sakura in Naruto lol), but in FMAB, you see plus-sized women. I'll have to rewatch this soon.
Many of the best written female characters in anime are all in FMAB: Olivier Mira Armstrong, Riza Hawkeye, Izumi Curtis, Lan Fan, May Chang, Winry Rockbell, Maria Ross, and Madam Christmas are all badass and complex in their own ways.

@@12jswilson I think you and the OP have probably not seen too many anime then. There are plenty of female characters that are well written. To be actually fair, most FMAB women are pretty weak in comparison to many female protagonist anime. The Twelve Kingdoms, The Garden of Sinners, are some anime with female protagonists that are far better written than what you get in FMAB. In fact, FMAB female characters are no different than what you get in One Piece in terms of character depth. They do not have much depth apart from a flimsy backstory and an attitude. Only difference is the design of the appearance. But, appearance design of a character is a different matter. If you for a military anime like even Attack on Titan, the female costumes are not that different from FMAB standards.

@@jbak2935 Yes, it’s one of my favourites as well ☺I wish they at least completed the anime too by adapting the rest of LNs. It wasn’t UFO table level for sure, but it was still great to watch. I felt the cruder art style added to the mystical and broken nature of the that world and I felt they did a decent job adapting it within the whole cour based pacing. But yea, definitely could have done better as you said.

Honestly one of the most satisfying scenes in the entire series. He was just a side character, but Raven facilitated some of the most tense scenes in show, and he gets everything he deserves in this sequence.
He also technically got incinerated, cement burns the ever loving shit out of flesh.

It fits more into her character, as her philosophy is survival of the fittest, and her biggest problem with the higher ups is that they are all weak cowards who are willing to sacrifice lives without risking their own or having to get their hands dirty

Technically, she did call him "old traitor". Which fits her as she is a general and the worst thing you can probably is a traitor to a general. Plus, it still fits with her survival of the fittest ideology by addressing him as old and even making a comment about his "moldy ass".
