I love how the fight between Frieren and Denken shows the strategy in mage fights. What i really like about the fight of Frierern vs her clone is the demonstration of the ancient magic. How frightening is it, especially because it`s nature is unknown and incomprehensible.
There's not really a distinction between ancient magic and what is used today. Zoltraak and basic defensive magic are new, but the magic system that mages use are based off of the old human/elf magic system (as opposed to the demon magic system and the human faith-based magic system that typically requires holy tomes). The human/elf system is actually the only one that requires an understanding of the spell and its principles in order to use, so none of these spells are "incomprehensible" or Frieren wouldn't be able to cast them. The only magic that is incomprehensible is demon magic and human faith-based magic (what priests use) I would say the distinction is mostly in how costly the spells are (and how hard they are to control). Since compared to nearly all human mages, Frieren's mana pool is essentially bottomless. Simply put, she can use spells that the majority of human mages simply don't have the mana pool to cast.
@@tayh3645 The magic she used is what she labelled as the "pinnacle of magic" and was stated that there was no casting and it couldn't be detected as magic. What I personally believe is that the pinnacle of magic is no longer bringing forth your will into reality, it bends reality with your will. Changing what is already there. It isn't detected as magic because nothing is generated, it bends the magic of the already existing world. Using your very existence against you pretty much.
yea, MadHouse made a proper showcase of power here. in manga that fight look undewhelming, because ppl expect a 1000+ years old mage to be terrifyingly strong and skilled when she serious
5:18 is my favorite part because it shows how Frieren could splatter anyone she wanted just by looking at them. No spells, no staff, nothing, just her looking your way could end your life. Dope shit.
well, that's the point, she wanted to leave him out of mana, not to kill him. the thing most ppl didn't think about is how precisely she calculated the power of Zoltrack in this moment to deplete all of Denkens mana so he can't do the shit at all, but not injured badly from point blank hit that made him fly. thats like throwing a sledgehammer into your smartphone and only accept the call with it. same comes to Fern vs Ehre, she spamed the hell out of her, but didn't kill on injure her, which is impressive given how deadly those spells are if you have no barrier.
@@Circle9ru It's fair to assume they go into a mage contest with their clothing enchanted to absorb the basic attack spell, so even getting hit by it straight up isn't a death sentence like it used to be (Frieren explained that their gear can handle Zoltraak in episode 3). Just like how Fern can take the force of a freight train to the face, get smashed into a wall, and survive thanks to mana (like Frieren warding off that demon wire). The mages are a lot tankier than they might seem, as long as they're prepared to take a hit. But even so, Stark-level or above warriors will just rip them apart in seconds.
@@djx7134, in EP 3 she todl about ARMOR, not mages clothes. also if thier clothes can block Zoltrack, why ALL OF THEM used the barrier against it? don't you see logical problems in your point?
@@Circle9ru why do we still block and defend while boxing with headgear on? Probably because getting punched in the head hurts ...? Protective equipment does not make one invulnerable, obviously. Even by video game logic, how many give you armor that makes your character invulnerable? Without cheats, practically zero, unless you're clowning around in low level areas. Whether in real life or in games, or fiction, the same concept applies. You'll still want as much defense/damage mitigation as you can get. Hence, using barriers. For someone quick to attack another's intelligence, you sure seem to have some serious shortcomings in the same department.
@@djx7134, nah, dude, its obvious for everyone except you, mages don't have much of passive defence, if any. heavy armor have some defence against magic, but against high tier mages its the same as attacking them naked, they pierce through it like a paper. and this point have one simple proof - otherwise battle mages woould extinct, Frieren world is much more realistic than it pretends to be. same as the barrier they use absolutely dominate any other defencive spells, because its good against nearly anything, if it was even possible to makes a warrior nearly invincible to magic, without that armor cost like entire army and weight more than the warrior himself, ppl would do it and mages would loose thier role on a battlefield. why? because mages are problematic, there is not much of them, require long study, literaly a walking nuke who can fck you up if threated wrong, fragile so need front line.
If this was an mmorpg game, I think balance notes will have sth like "we have found that the meta has been dominated by the spell Zoltrak which has a high tendency to be abused with CD reduction items and casting speed bonuses, so the team has decided to add a 1 sec cd universal CD on zoltrak and also added a casting delay of 0.5 secs on the spell. We hope that with this, new spells and synergies will arise as well"
The zoltraak main has now changed the strategy to use condensed zoltraak to deliver one powerful blow instead. And some player has realized that condensing the spell now allow player to fire at greater range thus viable strategy is to use highly condense zoltraak outside magic detection range. The reaction from player maybe.
Frierens account is a from an alpha build of the game, when they were still testing how far they could push their destruction magic spells, most of which have either been removed or made legendary rare since. An oversight left her account with access to those spells. The game has no level cap, and Frierens player has 30k+ hours in the game. Upon release, players quickly rushed to learn how to acquire the Zoltraak spell, so the developers added in an over-tuned defense spell to nerf it. The meta shifted with the Environmental Manipulation update, which expanded the capability of many utility and elemental spells, and allowed players to interact with and weaponize terrain based hazards more directly. This was seen as a good thing among the players for diversifying the pvp meta. Meanwhile, some players decide to eschew common archetypes and create highly specialized characters, such as the dex based Zoltraak spammer, and the wis based Reelseiden, which focus on cooldown reduction and insta-hit kill damage that negates all defense, respectively. Whilst most players agree that the Deception skill has little use, some players have discovered that, when pushed to high levels and paired with the proper Mana Control skills, it can prevent a players correct max mana values from being displayed to other players. It is not known if this is an intended effect or a bug. At extreme levels, it can prevent a players mana value being displayed at all. This can be paired with some of the aforementioned specialized builds, such as the Zoltraak spammer, to great effect. There is currently no known counter to this build. It is presumed the developers are working on a fix.

Some anime are all about action and battles, and sometimes, it get's a little stale. Some shows just don't have the time/budget to make good fights every episode and still produce decent quality, yet they try anyway. Frieren has fewer fights, and isn't really even about that, so when a fight does happen, it feels a lot more special, and the animators can spend a lot more time making it good, which makes it feel even more special.

well, they actually closer than you think. in raw power and spell arsenal Serie absolutely crash anyone, but Frieren did actually do things even Serie wasn't able to. like [SPOILER ALERT]undoing Macht's curse, which Serie said was "very low chances to do" 50 yers before it, and Freiren did it first time ~500 years ago[SPOILER ALERT]. so Freiren lacks in power compared to Serie, but surpasses her in magic analysis and creativity. and given how strength is not everything in that world, as we saw by Ubel killing Sense clone or Lernen breaking Frieren's barrier still being not even close to her level, Serie vs Frieren will either end in seconds, or will be really long and Serie will get messed up hard at the end of it even if she win.
@@Circle9ruSerie never said anything about any chances. Frieren took 100 years to undo her arm but still needed Macht's actual memories to do anything about Di Agolze. There are people stronger than the MC and they have lost before it's just that everyone that beat them is either dead of old age or the MC just doesn't try to fight again.
The clip is not reflective of the anime as a whole. It is not one of those stupid battle stories where there is a mindless, pointless fight every episode. the real menace out there is DENKEN's clone, mfker is so all rounded and ruthless, if the clones can spam spells nonstop you can imagine him as edo tensei madara
And fern’s, she couldn’t find hers either but she!! She is incredible, I hope we get to see more of her in season 2
@@chaddaifouche536to be fair, Methode herself said that she was going to restrain Fern, not kill her. I’d say she managed to restrain Fern after a tough fight before the Spiegel was killed
Amazing anime. I am so happy I decided to watch something new a week ago. Once I started I really couldn't stop watching it. Amazing! 10/10.
...now watch it again to see the foreshadowing, how everything is intentional (e.g. Fern montage of her meditating during training wasn't just to look cool, she was practicing surppressing mana), realise that Frieren is wearing her masters earrings, and the telling details of animation (eg. Fern was "interested" in Stark from the moment they met, just look at her expressions). The emotions are somehow even stronger the second (and 3rd, 4th) time round. Watch subtitled and dubbed to pick up all the details in translation and animation you missed because of reading. AND then, watch all the reaction videos lmao - I am so completely lost to this show
@ Haha. Yeah, I will be watching it again but in English this time. Been watching first time in Russian language, whoever voiced main characters deserves a huge respect. Frieren in Russian sounds so cute, funny, kind, friendly and so on. Her voice literally made me watch this anime haha. Love it so far!
@SHAAAaaaOLiiiiN I've only heard the English and Japanese, but from what you and others have said, while the voice actors are great, I think a lot of praise need to also go to directors and casting crew. Enjoy your repeat journeys!
pretty normal series tbh. Y'all just hasn't watch the good ones yet
@@aoikunieda5354 enjoyment is all subjective, instead of sounding snobbish, why not just mention the anime that you have enjoyed.
The only magic that is incomprehensible is demon magic and human faith-based magic (what priests use)
I would say the distinction is mostly in how costly the spells are (and how hard they are to control).
So the Frieren mimic just casually releasing a collapsing star black hole singularity and shattering reality…? Cool.
yea, MadHouse made a proper showcase of power here. in manga that fight look undewhelming, because ppl expect a 1000+ years old mage to be terrifyingly strong and skilled when she serious
5:18 is my favorite part because it shows how Frieren could splatter anyone she wanted just by looking at them. No spells, no staff, nothing, just her looking your way could end your life. Dope shit.
I thought it was a spell, just either a really obscure folk spell or extremely ancient one that no mage of the modern era could identity
@ either way, dope as fuck
@@video_game_royal4797 "magic that launches flies away"
💯
@@video_game_royal4797 or, since Fern couldn't even identify it as a spell, it could be a curse.
She legit waited until he got his shield up, then blasted him lol.
well, that's the point, she wanted to leave him out of mana, not to kill him. the thing most ppl didn't think about is how precisely she calculated the power of Zoltrack in this moment to deplete all of Denkens mana so he can't do the shit at all, but not injured badly from point blank hit that made him fly. thats like throwing a sledgehammer into your smartphone and only accept the call with it. same comes to Fern vs Ehre, she spamed the hell out of her, but didn't kill on injure her, which is impressive given how deadly those spells are if you have no barrier.
If this was an mmorpg game, I think balance notes will have sth like
"we have found that the meta has been dominated by the spell Zoltrak which has a high tendency to be abused with CD reduction items and casting speed bonuses, so the team has decided to add a 1 sec cd universal CD on zoltrak and also added a casting delay of 0.5 secs on the spell. We hope that with this, new spells and synergies will arise as well"
Vile😂😂😂😂
Their common defense magic was literally the thing introduced to nerf zoltrak
The zoltraak main has now changed the strategy to use condensed zoltraak to deliver one powerful blow instead. And some player has realized that condensing the spell now allow player to fire at greater range thus viable strategy is to use highly condense zoltraak outside magic detection range.
The reaction from player maybe.
@@hunterkiller009 marksman rifle has been turned into sniper rifle
You omitted the BEST exam moment of all: the scene of her getting stuck inside the mimic in the treasure room!
I played that scene back so many times, it kills me
The casual black hole is insane and hilarious. Also it looks like the golem doubles the spell casts. Kinda insane and I could see her obliterating armies with multiple Golems if you just give her prep time
I really like the fact that mages use hand to hand combat and their staff as melee weapons.
Amazing battle music. Always got goosebumps watching the battle scene
Frieren has to be one of my favourite animes of all time. Everything was just so good.
Of all the anime I've watched, Frieren is at the top of what I imagine a mage should be. Spells, barriers, the combos! Insane!
i knoe frieren is not about the fight...
but godmamn, it goes hard...
lmfao she totally is about the fight
the fights are just a cherry on top. You could skip them and still have a good anime. But you could skip some other parts and leave in the fights and still have a good anime.
@@rellloom, why would you skip any of it at the first place? man, i skip the flashbacks EVERYWHERE, i hate them(with some very rare exceptions when they ACTUALLY show something important for the story), but i didn't skip a single one in Frieren. its prob the only anime yet where EVERYTHING made good and nothing need to be skipped.
@@Circle9ru As Oda once said, ‘this is a matter of reading comprehension’. I’m not suggesting you should skip anything. I’m saying you could, and it would still be a good show. I’m saying the show is so full of good components, you could take away a whole massive thing it does well, and it would still be a great show.
The animation in this show doesnt need to go this hard man!!!

I love how someone said "my opening move is a black hole".
This really is such a great anime that was well made in both art and animation and the music, ermergerd the music.
For a short period I could see the flicker in Frieren's Clone's eyes just before she basically willed Fern to be pushed away.
It's like saying "you're annoying, go away" to a fly, before you smack it into the distance.
Denken and the group first encountering frierens clone is a moment I'll never forget.
With list of spells it is no wonder why Frieren is looking for weird magic 😂 she already got the crazy ones
also no wonder she mostly used Zoltrack only, who tf is so strong and durable to be worthy of using that kind of magic on them?

Frieren super calm but also strong, love the anime ❤
so well animated
It really shows that fern is a genius she hit the mimic twice before it was able to even react.
She's faster than a 1000 years old mage.
i like how it took the final ep and it being a clone for her to take any damage at all Firen is truly a force of nature
2:13 is my fave solely because of the animation.
Frieren and Fern fight against clone is as épic as goddesses fighting in an apocalypse, it was just amazing how OP are Frieren, and let you think how powerful Serie can be, lol, that little cute lady probably can be compared as a God of Destruction O_O.
well, they actually closer than you think. in raw power and spell arsenal Serie absolutely crash anyone, but Frieren did actually do things even Serie wasn't able to. like [SPOILER ALERT]undoing Macht's curse, which Serie said was "very low chances to do" 50 yers before it, and Freiren did it first time ~500 years ago[SPOILER ALERT]. so Freiren lacks in power compared to Serie, but surpasses her in magic analysis and creativity. and given how strength is not everything in that world, as we saw by Ubel killing Sense clone or Lernen breaking Frieren's barrier still being not even close to her level, Serie vs Frieren will either end in seconds, or will be really long and Serie will get messed up hard at the end of it even if she win.
@@Circle9ruSerie never said anything about any chances. Frieren took 100 years to undo her arm but still needed Macht's actual memories to do anything about Di Agolze.
While strength isn't straightforward, Serie literally knows pretty much every spell, she has no bad match ups against anything.
Analysis can only get you so far when your opponent has a million ways to overcome any weakness you discover, especially when you count spells that literally follow no logic at all, like the mythical era ones.
@@quitw18, she did, chapter 93, page 15, 3rd frame(2nd line the right one). she litraly said its very unlikely to do and the city is already doomed. and yes, it took 100 years, but Seirie just told its impossible and never tried.

Even with no arms, Frieren is terrifying.
A pure contest of skill. No crying about friendships and struggles, or random powering up and limit breaking out of nowhere. Best part, no fucking screaming. Zero characters are stupid MCs who talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and inner monologue and talk and talk and talk and talk.

The sound track for this goes so hard
Yet, after going through all this sh*t, Fern got a clean/perfume spell 😂
I like how in the frieren vs frieren fight, she never once used zoltraak to keep the fake from adjusting to it until fern used it
I have to say the reaction to Frieren breaking the barrier is actually better in the dub...
"Even if the world was turned upside down"
Frieren: Hold my elven beer
Haven't watched this yet, but from looking at this clip, this just seems like your typical power fantasy anime where the MC is just so ridiculously powerful that there's no real danger in the show
But it does something right of the characters emotions and each one has different advantages and disadvantages
There are people stronger than the MC and they have lost before it's just that everyone that beat them is either dead of old age or the MC just doesn't try to fight again.
The clip is not reflective of the anime as a whole. It is not one of those stupid battle stories where there is a mindless, pointless fight every episode. The main character made a mistake decades ago, and is trying to undo that mistake in her current journey. As she does so, she is taking two others on the hero’s journey. The story is about how the characters grow and change based on their experiences.
Frierens power spells are so overkill it reminds you when you are playing LoL and you kill someone at 1hp with your ultimate, just for the sake of God. Gotta love her.
Masterpiece 👌🏻
Ferns Zoltraak is absolutely terrifying. If only Fern can live long she can single handedly kill the demon king.
imagine serie entered this dungeon and fought herself💀💀😭😭
Frieren goes by just casting 9th level Magic Missiles
Just see how Fern progresses, in a battle where the powerscale is so broken, she managed to get for a moment undivided attention.
Anyone know what spell the armless frieren mimic uses on fern at the end? Is it ever explained in the manga?
There aren't all that many spells that get a thorough explanation in the manga, zoltraak, Ubel's reelseiden, Aura's auserlese, Wirbel's sorganeil, there are some more that haven't shown up in the anime yet, not many more than these have names, most of the spells are never talked about. So far, this spell has never been brought up again.
@ darn , i thought there might be some info given what fern says about it.
Thanks anyways!
I hope it's investigated, referenced and/or explained in some way in the future. It's so cool.
@@mstevens5753the ones you mentioned are actually explained, and i like how you didnt credit zoltraak to Qual. As for some other spells with names, they are pretty basic without requiring explanations.
That spell has no name. It's a frieren spell. When flamme found frieren in her village (which was raided by demons and slaughtered her clan) she found frieren surrounded by dead demons. With that, i'd say that it isn't a spell but a phenomenon that frieren can create. No casting, no magic, just pure force (like starwars 'force')
