The ending scene introducing the hybrid was intended to give us the answer as to why the engineer who seeded earth had normal skin, and the one later seen towards the end of the prometheus movie had biomechanics integrated into his skin. It honestly told us so much about the engineers and why they created the xenomorphs that we saw on that ship in the first movie without being direct. Since they couldn’t reproduce the original strain they extracted the black goo and infused themselves with the substance (the right way), which is exactly what the company intended to do with the substance once it was perfected to “improve” humanity. The ship in alien wasn’t intended for earth, it was intended for the planet Shaw and David discovered, just not directly because that would pose the possibility of another outbreak. The eggs weren’t meant to hatch, because they were never intended to be weapons but instead researched and used to produce future generations of the engineers. They only cared for the xenomorph specimen because of its ability to restructure dna and give life, which was the engineers original intent with the ENTIRE project, to save their race by finding a cure to their inability to reproduce, maybe humanity was another experiment as well? The only issue was that they experienced an outbreak during their research and everything went to hell. That is why the engineer wanted to destroy earth. He saw that we had created AI and were on the same exact path as them, especially if we were to discover the black goo, then all of the galaxy would be in jeopardy. Remember that the engineers were known to seed life and create, not destroy. They needed to wipe us out before the outbreak extended past that planet they used as a research outpost in Prometheus. Big takeaway from all of this : the xenomorph was never intended to be a weapon, it was a product of genetic mutation that was never supposed to exist, and that they only intended to use it the same way wey-tani was going to use it. David knew that and was on the same page in terms of researching the reproductive cycles because that’s what it always comes back to, the ability to reproduce.
I wanted them to explore the other outposts on the planets we saw in prometheus and alien covenant. Who knows maybe this movie romulus is tying things up so we can finally see the protaganists of this film meetup with david in the next. David is still alive from covenant and hes on a ship, who knows might get another prequel which finally clears things up or the engineers will rock up and show david his place in this world as they are orginally the ones we thought to create the xenos, they worshipped the deacon and such etc etc
@ArtofLunatik I believe if you are inclined to be kind to the writers, you could infer that her ability to blindly sink the hoop and when she detects that the ship has changed course back to earth, that she has a new sense of spacial awareness/perception. No one would want to be kind to writers in this day and age though.
Awesome analysis! Just one thing... I don't think Kay knowingly injected herself with the Xenomorph essence though. She wasn't present when it was explained as to what exactly was contained in the vials. The only interaction she had with it was when Andy was acting on company orders and suggested she inject it to save her life.

Ah thank you! That's a good point! I guess Rain does say she doesn't trust it in Kay's presence. But yes, I raise it not so much to blame Kay, but to point out that when she does take it we see the disturbing consequences of trying to integrate the Xenomorph with the human.
This might be a stretch, but you can kind of make the argument that Eve also didn't get the direct instruction not to partake in the forbidden fruit since God told Adam not to eat it before Eve came into existence.

My parents took me to see Aliens in 1986. I was 6yo and they didn't have a babysitter. The fear that I experienced as a little girl in the theater, was felt again while I watched this film. The face huggers running amuck throughout the room and station, a character seeing a xenomorph for the first time, and the newest horror the offspring. When first saw it crawling, the Wendigo was the first thing that came to mind. Very unsettling.
I was 22 when I saw that film and I think it caused minor PTSD, so I can’t even imagine what you must have felt…probably shock and lingering PTSD. Poor kid.

Stop complaining and start appreciating movies! The fact that that Ridley said yes and it was pushed to the big screen instead of streaming platforms was a great choice! It's different than all the Superhero and Secret Agent movies. I truly enjoyed Rolumus because it felt nostalgic. I was a kid when I saw Alien ans seeing sometning close to that decades later made me so happy!
That doesnt take away from the flaws tho. Especially ridley forcing his black goo plot point into every aliens movie and realise that prometheus and coveneant were not that interesting or philosophical like he trys to make them out to be. But i did like the film it was a good movie to watch the last arc was just not needed

Won’t ever happened with Disney owning Fox. They looked and saw Covenent tanked in the box office. Decided to scrap Scott’s trilogy. Instead optéis for Romulus which will get sequel with them killing it in the box office. They also have a series coming to Fox that takes in between 1 & 2.

That's because the black goo/pathogen contains Engineer DNA, which is what the Romulus team was trying to isolate without the drawbacks of xenomorph DNA. They just hadn't succeeded.
I just realized that the overall plot of A:R mirrors that of Don't Breathe quite a bit (because Fede also directed it). Young kids, living in a shit place, breaking into a forbidden place to steal smth of value that will ensure their future & get them out of their sordid lives/home
Fede is Venezuelan I believe? He recently has said that his movies are all personal stories of feeling trapped somewhere and the journey to finding self liberation, so when you realize the common thread connecting his films it makes a lot of sense
ALSO i wanna point out some beautiful and poignant foreshadowing the script does: 1. when explaining the backstory of remus + romulus when describing the naming of the research station, they show renaissance(?) era or greco roman paintings of an (evil looking? or unknowingly evil) baby feeding on a dying mother’s breasts.. 2. navarro promises they’ll “get em out” and they do but… 3. kay saying “i’m just glad this baby is going to see the sun” and well technically it actually does…in more ways than one, too. 4. (not the best one but) u can sorta predict andy will survive bc in the beginning he insists on needing $ to buy a horse for rain on yvaga EDIT: 5. they show the rat dying from a chestburster after being fed the prometheus strain, but the group leaves before the flight record footage could show em that. 6. doesnt entirely count but one of the cpu loggers flashes an alert file re facehuggers when the cryo chamber breach sets off the temperature shelves. ALSO lowkey i think kay and bjorn had an affair and the baby was his. when rain asks kay who’s the father she says “oh some asshole..” who’s been the single asshole in the friend group the entire time? bjorn. and the way he holds her when the alien grows inside its pod before he tries to kill it, it looks too romantic rather than platonic. i could v well be wrong but it makes for such a more interesting character plot imo. i’m convinced the orig script had more implications re that and the final cut just could take it or leave it since it’s already 2 hrs. i bet a longer director’s cut or a deleted scene would indulge in that
I guess because WY realized that the station was on a collision course with the icy rings of the planet already, and the security forces that killed Big Chap once it got out of control problably couldn't fully take care of the station infestation and may have perished, so WY decided to just let the station crash and save resources (that they many not have, since they are not the military) to blow it up before. I guess...

It's a plot point not meant to be thought about (one of many) because it doesn't make sense. WY could have sent a team up from the colony to secure the station. At least take it out of decaying orbit.

This is a fantastic analysis!! I love that this movie continues the mythological/philosophical threads of Prometheus, albeit through more subtext this time. But for the active viewer, there is so much to chew on here!
Excellent movie. Some flaws here and there, but overall, a chilling experience, thought through and riveting to the end. I just have one gripe with it. Spoilers: . . . . . . . . They obtain the alien DNA from the wreckage of the Nostromo and take it to a lab station to study it, because the DNA holda the key to humanity's future. Or Wayland's profits. So it's the most important R&D project of Wayland. But then everything goes haywire and contact must have broken off with Wayland HQ. Since the project is THAT important, you'd think that HQ, who must have closely monitored the operations on that station, would have gone to the station asap. Even worse, the station flies by a planet that is controlled by Wayland. They must have noticed that a dead space station flew by their planet and be like: «Wait, that's the station we've lost contact with. What is it doing up there?» But they don't even try to enter it. Instead, a few young adults do. With a ship that they weren't supposed to have in the first place, since they had been working a terrible job to get a permit to leave the planet. Stil it doesn't ruin the movie for me, because the rest absolutely pans out.
I'm sure the company has a ship on the way, they're not going to send just anyone over there ..they've got a pretty good idea of the threat level and the work is top secret
You forget that it takes like months for a message to travel through space to the WY headquarters, and the nanother several months for them to send a response (whether a message or a team), and the stuff went down in that station only very recently. And it was probably very highly classified project and thus only known by the top dogs in the company.
I think weyland yultani got the majority of what they wanted from the facility and were "crashing" romulus into the planet to test/grow the xenos. ....on a planet - that gets zero sun.... coincidence?

From what I'm understanding you describe, wouldn't the Xenomorphs be the heavenly beings sent to punish prometheus for stealing there fire, in my opinion the xenomorphs are basically the runners of hell, like when the characters first enter the hive all those scientists on the walls there screams echoing through the station, they are being punished for trying to steal the fire, the fire could also be the fruit from the tree of knowledge, because of how it changed man, teaching man about sin, or maybe, just maybe, the xenomorphs are that fire sword protecting the tree of life, since they hold immortality it makes sense they are the protectors of it as well, just as a theory, no one says angels have to be beautiful with white robs and harps

Great question! I suppose it depends on your view of God. In the Prometheus myth, the gods are capricious, withholding a gift from humanity. But in the Judeo-Christian view, God is good, and he is withholding the fruit because humans aren't ready for it. And if that's the case, I see the Xenomorphs as being much more like fallen angels. Put it this way, if unfallen angels are anything like Xenomorphs, that's a pretty depressing reality we live in!
As sections of the Renaissance station: The Remus section housed cryogenic labs, with printer incubators that printed Facehuggers and held them in stasis. The Romulus section housed test labs and bacta tanks, that extracted the mutagen fluid from the Facehuggers once they had been transported.
Do we know why Weyland Yutani didn’t search for this ship with such important mission and knowledge? Have I missed something? How can they let this ship just float in the space when the value it carries is too important for the company?
@@alfchuah Response of any kind would take roughly 6 weeks as stated by Rook. But given the state of the station, it's likely there was no one left to sound the alarm - not even Rook (he was basically wrecked, and couldn't work without external power). Given the station's trajectory with the planet's rings, there's realistically nowhere near enough time by the time of the movie for any kind of company response. If the station was floating still, it would call into question why didn't they do anything - but the station drifted for some time, and got pulled into orbit, so tracking it externally would've been like finding a needle at the bottom of the ocean.

I love how you illustrate why God immediately kicked Adam and Eve out of the Garden. I didn’t realize that if they would’ve stayed and eaten from the tree of life, then there would be no hope of redemption from Jesus. We would be trapped in sin for eternity, just like how the fallen angels are. That is deep!!
Yep, it was mercy that pushed us out of the garden, imagine being eternal, while being spiritually dead. Thats literally hell. We would have all been there from the start had this banishment not happened.
I loved it absolutely. and I love how you delve into details. Only those with real heart and mind set onto the art piece care to do that which is utmost admirable. Never stop seeking out those little details and keep the admiration of the craft going! Furthermore, I will add how apparent the symbolism of the myth is in that movie and Covenant. In Covenant we can hear David calling the xenomorph a wolf. Right here in Romulus we can directly see the symbolism. Of course the wolf is the xenomorph, a feral and wild beast potentially offering incredible strength. And such Kay's unborn yet child drinks the milk of the wolf by being influenced by the extract from the lab that the girl injected herself with. This way the actual Romulus is seen at the very end of the movie, killing his familiar and setting out to murder more. However as I had predicted myself even before watching.. How Romulus built Rome, it also had fallen. And so has he, blasted away onto the astral rings..
Another point on the symbolism of water and rain - there are multiple moments throughout the movie where the xenomorph's acid blood raining down is a threat, either to the integrity of the ship or to the characters themselves. Most notably, when the asshole guy dies; he penetrates the alien's metamorphic womb with his weapon attempting to kill it (very subtle imagery there), but the alien proves that it can't be violated that way and that the very attempt makes it more dangerous. Its dripping blood is perhaps the biggest direct threat to Rain throughout the movie, because when the blood reaches the 'ground' - the very edge of the ship - it destroys everything. There's so much womb/birth imagery and symbolism in the movie, I find it so fascinating... The ship's system is MU/TH/UR and all the humans depend on her life support. The cryo pods are the wombs in which they'll be carried to new lives on Yvago, symbolism that's horrifically paid off when Kay births the twisted offspring within her cryo pod. The facehuggers are in trapped synthetic wombs for research, then the 'water breaks' and they're free to wreak reproductive havoc. The alien develops through a womb with a distinctly yonic exterior, and of course it has its classic phallic head. Andy is continuously reborn throughout the movie and only develops into his true self via connecting with and having his personhood acknowledged by his sister (thus defying the legend of Romulus' fratricide), then being placed in a cryo pod and promised rebirth into a new body... the first time he as an android would have ever BEEN in a 'womb'. I think Romulus does justice excellently to the sexual and birthing themes of the whole franchise, and far better than Prometheus did. Granted, it's been a minute since I saw that one, but it seriously left me cold lol. This one left me shaking with excitement.
not complaining but wanted to point out that none of these reviews seem to tend to talk about what’s prob my most fav about the alien installments: the cognitive and emotional games of chess the space travelers have to play w/ the androids in order to survive bc the synthetics’ loyalties are constantly shifting as they try to sabotage circumstances in order to preserve the alien or black goo for weyland-yutani’s purposes - all in the name of what’s “in the best interests of the company” every generation from ash to david to andy to even rook, it’s always so fun to watch it’s such a fun parallelism commentary to explore how demonically evil and vile mega corporations are when they take advantage of workers to obscene degrees in the name of colonialism and profit margins. the way weyland yutani breached their own contracts to quite literally enslave their labor force, then dispose of em when working conditions get dangerous - it’s a tale as old as time, the ruling class of humans have been doing that since the first civilization was settled.
The android was one of the most interesting parts of the movie this time around. The arc between Andy and Rain goes a lot deeper when you realize he's aware and in control of his actions the whole time, even when he has the module in.

@@mizuslayer It definitely seems like that on the surface, but there's a few key things that he says throughout that give it away. Like when Rain asks him "how could you do that?" in reference to refusing to unlock the door for kay, he says "What, leave someone behind?" There's another part earlier when he tells her something about how he's not a child anymore. And when she comes back for him at the end but he's guarding his neck, until she convinces him to trust her. He does get a new prime directive, but I think he accepts it out of spite for Rain choosing to leave him to die once they arrive at the new planet.

Very good analysis. I would add that just as Romulus and Remus, they fed themselves by being breastfed by another species, their mother was a wolf, while in the last bit of the story, the element of breastfeeding is brought back, just like in the Romulus story, which are always depicted as two children being fed by a wolf, this image is also found inside the ship when the computer voice is explaining the division of the facilities between Romulus and Remus. Excellent analysis! I enjoyed the biblical parallels you laid out to go with the Greek mythos as well. One thing that I noticed also falls in line with the story is the human/alien hybrid is also a nod to Genesis 6:1-5. The mixing of human with angel races caused a breach in the cosmos. The Bible refers to these chaotic hybrids as Nephlim. They were giants, this can explain why the hybrid alien would be bigger and stronger than the normal ones. With the mixing of different genes there’s a natural gigantism as a result. It’s not a perfect comparison but I think it lines up enough to be part of the inspiration for the movie.
The marines must have a division of synths that are outfitted for combat against the xenos. Synths with acid resistant armor, targeting systems for various weapons types, synths with enhanced strength, durability, and speed.

I also don't think you're reading too much into the movie. Judeo-Christian ideas are so baked into Western civilization and culture that no matter how much we try to divorce ourselves from these ideas and themes, they will continue to persist in our stories on a subconscious level. Fedé Alvarez is from Uruguay, which is predominantly Christian. He most likely grew up in the faith whether he I'd a practicing Christian or not and so I'd expect much of his work to reflect Christian mythology whether he makes a conscious effort or not to incorporate it into his art.
As a narrative filmmaker myself, and heres your peak behind the curtain. I am always fasinated by the deeper meaning folks find in my film work. Me, im pretty straight forward. I want you to be entertained by my work. That does NOT leave me a lot of time to put well thought through deeper meanings into my work thats nearly impossible to detect.

I did enjoy the movie and I remember queueing up to watch the original in 1979, so I've been a huge fan of the whole franchise even the bad ones however firstly I will say this is probably the best video essay I've seen of this movie, it's nice to see an an intelligent analysis, but I think you possibly give too much credit to the filmmakers. Yes I think your points are very valid and I think that is what is happening here and the obvious callbacks to old Testament and mythology are there to see but I'm not convinced the filmmakers understood this completely I think some of this is just accidental. excellent work and I'm sure I will watch this movie many times

I think some ideas in our storytelling through the ages are so sticky that we can't help but use them again and again. And I think that's because they reveal something about the pattern of reality.
The movie is the perfect link that has been missing for so long! Especially in the first third, it brilliantly illustrates how the world of Alien, Blade Runner, and others offers endless possibilities for telling exciting stories. Considering that everything started with the theft of a cryo-pod from a Weyland ship, the only question left is: What comes next? Hopefully, we'll finally get a comic adaptation of Earth War and other thrilling titles. The Alien universe is infinitely vast, offering a wealth of possibilities for storytelling. It's a place where professional dreamers craft intricate narratives, and profit-hungry corporations, willing to stop at nothing-even crossing moral and ethical boundaries-pursue their relentless quest for the perfect biological weapon. This rich and complex world is brimming with potential, providing countless opportunities to explore new stories, characters, and conflicts. The blend of corporate greed, scientific ambition, and the unknown makes the Alien universe a fertile ground for creativity and thrilling adventures.
Another thing I noticed was that Kay appeared to be wearing a Catholic Mary pendant around her neck. Initially I really didn't like this because I thought it was just a preverse subversion of symbolism, but the ideas put forth in the video put it in a better context for me. Mary is the "New Eve" the mother of risen humanity, and Eve is seen as the mother of fallen humanity, so maybe the necklace isn't suggesting her to be Mary, but Eve. I still don't know if I like this use of this symbolism, but this does help put it in a better light than how I originally understood it.

The opening scenes on the colony were amazing. Apart from the excellent anniversary shorts, we've never really seen the pov from the average person working for "the company". I would watch a movie or show set on a WY colony that didn't have any Aliens in it.
The substantial difference between Z-01 and Black Goo is that the former was synthesized from the cells of a xenomorph, while the latter from those of a different species, but genetically linked to the previous one.
Faster than light travel is possible because Weyland explains space-time folds and bends. It's quite possible that the engineers are humans that have evolved using the black goo in what they thought was a successful way. Until they realised they could no longer reproduce. As a last-ditch effort, one of the 'chosen' engineers broke his dna down using the black goo on earth to create new life. (Other chosen engineers was supposed to do the same on other planets too.) Time folds and twists, and the cycle repeats.
I love that this movie finally made me appreciate the themes of Prometheus and Alien Covenant. Beyond the plot conveniences and stupid characters, those movies were a almost biblical fable about the wonder and horror of creation, yet they fumbled the execution being too grandiose. Alien Romulus went back to the roots of the franchise and was a small scale story, like the original. Now the lore is interesting again.
The original trilogy first started out as a full-blown horror survival movies. Now it's feeling like something completely different. Aliens is my all time favorite. I would say Romulus is the third best movie in the franchise.

I cannot agree more with you that there are definitely "religious" overtone that's subtly and cleverly woven into the storyline. It was definitely re-telling and foretelling what happened to humanity in the past with the story of the fallen angels and Nephilim and giants, "heroes" of renown. The movie also explores what ultimately might transcend albeit in a very terrifying manner the re-combining of genes of humans and those "fallen" serpent beings from the cosmos.
I'm pretty sure planetary rings don't look like rings if you're right next to them. Their massive objects that you have to be miles from in order to see them
Most of the symbolism you put here seems too forced to me. I honestly don't think the original creators thought of depicting things like “the snake that separated man and woman” or other mystical parables when they created the alien. I think they just thought of creating an alien that enters a ship and kills everyone to make a mere science fiction movie. The symbolism is forced and we find it only if we want to look for it, but I don't think that was the authors' intention at all.
Excellent analysis. I enjoyed the film very much. I rewatched everything prior to seeing it in the Alien universe including the Predator movies - all of them. This enriched the experience by being able to piece together a lot of the little details. This film helps establish Prometheus even more firmly as the anchor of the enterprise. Covenant also has very similar themes when you think about it. It’s of course noteworthy that the both the protagonist and the baddies are mostly women. Strong women.
Overall it was a good movie and id watch it again. It's like they took Alien, Aliens, and Prometheus and threw them in a blender and this is what we got. It wasn't bad.
I thought the hybrid was scary asf especially when you see it in the dark background on all fours. I was like tf is that! I admit it grew really fast but I mean the xenomorph grew really fast as well. Also I found it more terrifying because we’re already experienced xenomorphs before but when this new scary looking creature comes it was wicked haha I gave the movie a 8.5/10 or even a 9/10
While movies are art and we all interact with them differently I feel like Romulus had little in the way of actual symbolism described here. There are some elements like the big chap hanging like Jesus from a cross and the etymology of names but it felt like they were for the most part shoe horned in for the sake of it not actually trying to say something more about the themes or plot of the movie. But that’s just my take away and it was still interesting to hear the take away others had for the film and it was a fun watch all the same.
Accualy the movie is set in zeta reticuli wich is the origin of zeta greys who are future version of annunaki gods who engineered us. this all is elaborate plot to depict what happened in "myth of adapa"
In a regular infection, the xenomorph does not combine its DNA with a host. Rather, it behaves as a parasite. In Resurrection, xenomorph genes are spliced with Ripley's in a lab and in Romulus the offspring is a engineer-xenomorph hybrid.
Great movie the visuals are absolutely stunning! Which was a big part of the originals... My father who was born in 1970 was blown away too...Even by the cameo..he said my name during the scene and looked at me a couple seats down before they showed his face ..we both knew! Also my 21 yr old lil sister was on edge and hiding her face...Great movie

Well thought out and very interesting video. Love all the analogies to historic and biblical events. I gave Alien Romulus an 8 out of 10 for a bit rushed third act.. the offsrping threw me out a bit.. and Rook's poor CGI ruined an otherwise great film. Cheers Xeno lovers ❤
Enjoyed the movie. Some frustrations like the contrast theme of escaping everything in the nick of time. Also, it was difficult to understand some of the dialogue early on due to accents and muffled sound.
They have a whole other film with what happened on romulus before this film. It would be great to see the scientists doing experiments and then things going wrong and watching them all die. That hallway scene in romulus with all those people dead in the alien cocoons. Would be awesome to see that all play out
This movie exceeded my expectations. I found it to be a great addition to the Alien franchise. But didn’t Rook say they hunted for the xenomorph from Alien that Ripley shot out of the airlock for 170 years? If so, then this installment to the Alien franchise did NOT take place between Alien & Aliens since Ripley was in cryosleep for 57 years during this time. Instead, Romulus takes place well after the Ripley character arch. I may have misheard Rook, but I could swear he said 170 years? Anyone else hear him say that?
Finally someone who tries to go further and does not complain pretending to be a director movie. I just want to add that we must consider the origins of the Alien: Giger and his delirious art. Alien is a sexual reference and Giger planned the things to obtain a reverse r4p3. The snakes have vaginal shaped mouth that inseminates. The creature is phallic and does a reverse penetration, from inside to outside. Besides than the exterior that is taken from the painting Necronom iv. Giger was so obsessed that they had him removed from the set of the movie. One think I always thought as connected to the bible, beside the creation, is the fact that God created the woman taking a rib while the Alien is genereted by breaking the ribs.
I enjoyed the movie and as an Alien franchise fan , I've grown to like something about all the movies, even the hated ones. But what bugs me about all the newer Alien movies is the ridiculously accelerated gestation and growth of the Aliens. I understand the multiple reasons why they do it........ pacing , audience retention , not needing to fill the time with additional plot and character development..... but it becomes a bit comical at times. I wish they would give some explanation for it. You could excuse away the fast gestation time as its inside the body and has material to absorb but where does all the material come from for the Aliens to grow so fast and huge outside without access to organic material. In Alien:Resurrection that one guy had an embryo growing inside him almost the entire movie and it didn't burst out till nearly the end. Romulus could have stuck to the longer Alien/Aliens gestation time for the initial impregnation and then went accelerated for the genetically modified hybrid guy.
"Water is an important symbol" Kinda ironic how the station and all the aliens was destroyed by large ice chunks around that planet (That is frozen water for those who dont know) ;D
Great movie. And good job with the references. I’m just gonna immediately say Scott slapped Star Wars in the face casting a character who looks identical to Rae, not to mention their names are nearly identical, Rain, Rae, and her colored friend was also exactly like Star Wars. Scott definitely resents what Star Wars has become like most people. Her outfit even looked very similar to Rae from star wars. And let’s be honest, this alien film is better than anything Star Wars has done in the past decade

The ending scene introducing the hybrid was intended to give us the answer as to why the engineer who seeded earth had normal skin, and the one later seen towards the end of the prometheus movie had biomechanics integrated into his skin. It honestly told us so much about the engineers and why they created the xenomorphs that we saw on that ship in the first movie without being direct. Since they couldn’t reproduce the original strain they extracted the black goo and infused themselves with the substance (the right way), which is exactly what the company intended to do with the substance once it was perfected to “improve” humanity. The ship in alien wasn’t intended for earth, it was intended for the planet Shaw and David discovered, just not directly because that would pose the possibility of another outbreak. The eggs weren’t meant to hatch, because they were never intended to be weapons but instead researched and used to produce future generations of the engineers. They only cared for the xenomorph specimen because of its ability to restructure dna and give life, which was the engineers original intent with the ENTIRE project, to save their race by finding a cure to their inability to reproduce, maybe humanity was another experiment as well? The only issue was that they experienced an outbreak during their research and everything went to hell. That is why the engineer wanted to destroy earth. He saw that we had created AI and were on the same exact path as them, especially if we were to discover the black goo, then all of the galaxy would be in jeopardy. Remember that the engineers were known to seed life and create, not destroy. They needed to wipe us out before the outbreak extended past that planet they used as a research outpost in Prometheus. Big takeaway from all of this : the xenomorph was never intended to be a weapon, it was a product of genetic mutation that was never supposed to exist, and that they only intended to use it the same way wey-tani was going to use it. David knew that and was on the same page in terms of researching the reproductive cycles because that’s what it always comes back to, the ability to reproduce.

I wanted them to explore the other outposts on the planets we saw in prometheus and alien covenant. Who knows maybe this movie romulus is tying things up so we can finally see the protaganists of this film meetup with david in the next. David is still alive from covenant and hes on a ship, who knows might get another prequel which finally clears things up or the engineers will rock up and show david his place in this world as they are orginally the ones we thought to create the xenos, they worshipped the deacon and such etc etc

Awesome analysis! Just one thing... I don't think Kay knowingly injected herself with the Xenomorph essence though. She wasn't present when it was explained as to what exactly was contained in the vials. The only interaction she had with it was when Andy was acting on company orders and suggested she inject it to save her life.

Ah thank you! That's a good point! I guess Rain does say she doesn't trust it in Kay's presence. But yes, I raise it not so much to blame Kay, but to point out that when she does take it we see the disturbing consequences of trying to integrate the Xenomorph with the human.
This might be a stretch, but you can kind of make the argument that Eve also didn't get the direct instruction not to partake in the forbidden fruit since God told Adam not to eat it before Eve came into existence.

My parents took me to see Aliens in 1986. I was 6yo and they didn't have a babysitter. The fear that I experienced as a little girl in the theater, was felt again while I watched this film.
The face huggers running amuck throughout the room and station, a character seeing a xenomorph for the first time, and the newest horror the offspring. When first saw it crawling, the Wendigo was the first thing that came to mind. Very unsettling.

It's different than all the Superhero and Secret Agent movies. I truly enjoyed Rolumus because it felt nostalgic. I was a kid when I saw Alien ans seeing sometning close to that decades later made me so happy!
That doesnt take away from the flaws tho. Especially ridley forcing his black goo plot point into every aliens movie and realise that prometheus and coveneant were not that interesting or philosophical like he trys to make them out to be. But i did like the film it was a good movie to watch the last arc was just not needed

Won’t ever happened with Disney owning Fox. They looked and saw Covenent tanked in the box office. Decided to scrap Scott’s trilogy. Instead optéis for Romulus which will get sequel with them killing it in the box office. They also have a series coming to Fox that takes in between 1 & 2.

The "offspring" has more in common with an engineer than a xenomorph.
That's because the black goo/pathogen contains Engineer DNA, which is what the Romulus team was trying to isolate without the drawbacks of xenomorph DNA. They just hadn't succeeded.
I just realized that the overall plot of A:R mirrors that of Don't Breathe quite a bit (because Fede also directed it). Young kids, living in a shit place, breaking into a forbidden place to steal smth of value that will ensure their future & get them out of their sordid lives/home

1. when explaining the backstory of remus + romulus when describing the naming of the research station, they show renaissance(?) era or greco roman paintings of an (evil looking? or unknowingly evil) baby feeding on a dying mother’s breasts..
2. navarro promises they’ll “get em out” and they do but…
3. kay saying “i’m just glad this baby is going to see the sun” and well technically it actually does…in more ways than one, too.
4. (not the best one but) u can sorta predict andy will survive bc in the beginning he insists on needing $ to buy a horse for rain on yvaga
EDIT: 5. they show the rat dying from a chestburster after being fed the prometheus strain, but the group leaves before the flight record footage could show em that.
6. doesnt entirely count but one of the cpu loggers flashes an alert file re facehuggers when the cryo chamber breach sets off the temperature shelves.
ALSO lowkey i think kay and bjorn had an affair and the baby was his. when rain asks kay who’s the father she says “oh some asshole..” who’s been the single asshole in the friend group the entire time? bjorn. and the way he holds her when the alien grows inside its pod before he tries to kill it, it looks too romantic rather than platonic. i could v well be wrong but it makes for such a more interesting character plot imo. i’m convinced the orig script had more implications re that and the final cut just could take it or leave it since it’s already 2 hrs. i bet a longer director’s cut or a deleted scene would indulge in that

Why did Weyland Yutani-corporation just let they station drift in space especially considering how important it was to them?
I guess because WY realized that the station was on a collision course with the icy rings of the planet already, and the security forces that killed Big Chap once it got out of control problably couldn't fully take care of the station infestation and may have perished, so WY decided to just let the station crash and save resources (that they many not have, since they are not the military) to blow it up before. I guess...
Probably because space travel takes like months to execute due to the distance constraint, and the "accident" happened like 120 days prior

They obtain the alien DNA from the wreckage of the Nostromo and take it to a lab station to study it, because the DNA holda the key to humanity's future. Or Wayland's profits. So it's the most important R&D project of Wayland. But then everything goes haywire and contact must have broken off with Wayland HQ. Since the project is THAT important, you'd think that HQ, who must have closely monitored the operations on that station, would have gone to the station asap. Even worse, the station flies by a planet that is controlled by Wayland. They must have noticed that a dead space station flew by their planet and be like: «Wait, that's the station we've lost contact with. What is it doing up there?» But they don't even try to enter it. Instead, a few young adults do. With a ship that they weren't supposed to have in the first place, since they had been working a terrible job to get a permit to leave the planet. Stil it doesn't ruin the movie for me, because the rest absolutely pans out.
I'm sure the company has a ship on the way, they're not going to send just anyone over there ..they've got a pretty good idea of the threat level and the work is top secret
I think it will have made for extra fun to have some corrupt tactical officials come over on the ship n also be attacked by the aliens.
You forget that it takes like months for a message to travel through space to the WY headquarters, and the nanother several months for them to send a response (whether a message or a team), and the stuff went down in that station only very recently. And it was probably very highly classified project and thus only known by the top dogs in the company.
i think no one else tried to board the station because of the short timeline in wich the station would crash into the asteroid belt
I think weyland yultani got the majority of what they wanted from the facility and were "crashing" romulus into the planet to test/grow the xenos. ....on a planet - that gets zero sun.... coincidence?
Not the hardcore alien fan right here, I´m more like a Blade Runner, Dune kind of nerd, I love sci fi and I truly enjoyed Alien Romulus in the theater. Great to see a come back for practical effects and set design and the CGI stuff was also great. Your anlaysis was of the best I've seen about this movie and I've seen SOME. From what I'm understanding you describe, wouldn't the Xenomorphs be the heavenly beings sent to punish prometheus for stealing there fire, in my opinion the xenomorphs are basically the runners of hell, like when the characters first enter the hive all those scientists on the walls there screams echoing through the station, they are being punished for trying to steal the fire, the fire could also be the fruit from the tree of knowledge, because of how it changed man, teaching man about sin, or maybe, just maybe, the xenomorphs are that fire sword protecting the tree of life, since they hold immortality it makes sense they are the protectors of it as well, just as a theory, no one says angels have to be beautiful with white robs and harps

Great question! I suppose it depends on your view of God. In the Prometheus myth, the gods are capricious, withholding a gift from humanity. But in the Judeo-Christian view, God is good, and he is withholding the fruit because humans aren't ready for it. And if that's the case, I see the Xenomorphs as being much more like fallen angels. Put it this way, if unfallen angels are anything like Xenomorphs, that's a pretty depressing reality we live in!
As sections of the Renaissance station:
The Remus section housed cryogenic labs, with printer incubators that printed Facehuggers and held them in stasis.
The Romulus section housed test labs and bacta tanks, that extracted the mutagen fluid from the Facehuggers once they had been transported.
Do we know why Weyland Yutani didn’t search for this ship with such important mission and knowledge? Have I missed something? How can they let this ship just float in the space when the value it carries is too important for the company?
@@alfchuah Response of any kind would take roughly 6 weeks as stated by Rook. But given the state of the station, it's likely there was no one left to sound the alarm - not even Rook (he was basically wrecked, and couldn't work without external power).
Given the station's trajectory with the planet's rings, there's realistically nowhere near enough time by the time of the movie for any kind of company response.
If the station was floating still, it would call into question why didn't they do anything - but the station drifted for some time, and got pulled into orbit, so tracking it externally would've been like finding a needle at the bottom of the ocean.

I didn’t realize that if they would’ve stayed and eaten from the tree of life, then there would be no hope of redemption from Jesus. We would be trapped in sin for eternity, just like how the fallen angels are. That is deep!!
Yep, it was mercy that pushed us out of the garden, imagine being eternal, while being spiritually dead. Thats literally hell. We would have all been there from the start had this banishment not happened.

Furthermore, I will add how apparent the symbolism of the myth is in that movie and Covenant. In Covenant we can hear David calling the xenomorph a wolf. Right here in Romulus we can directly see the symbolism. Of course the wolf is the xenomorph, a feral and wild beast potentially offering incredible strength. And such Kay's unborn yet child drinks the milk of the wolf by being influenced by the extract from the lab that the girl injected herself with. This way the actual Romulus is seen at the very end of the movie, killing his familiar and setting out to murder more. However as I had predicted myself even before watching.. How Romulus built Rome, it also had fallen. And so has he, blasted away onto the astral rings..

Another point on the symbolism of water and rain - there are multiple moments throughout the movie where the xenomorph's acid blood raining down is a threat, either to the integrity of the ship or to the characters themselves. Most notably, when the asshole guy dies; he penetrates the alien's metamorphic womb with his weapon attempting to kill it (very subtle imagery there), but the alien proves that it can't be violated that way and that the very attempt makes it more dangerous. Its dripping blood is perhaps the biggest direct threat to Rain throughout the movie, because when the blood reaches the 'ground' - the very edge of the ship - it destroys everything.
There's so much womb/birth imagery and symbolism in the movie, I find it so fascinating... The ship's system is MU/TH/UR and all the humans depend on her life support. The cryo pods are the wombs in which they'll be carried to new lives on Yvago, symbolism that's horrifically paid off when Kay births the twisted offspring within her cryo pod. The facehuggers are in trapped synthetic wombs for research, then the 'water breaks' and they're free to wreak reproductive havoc. The alien develops through a womb with a distinctly yonic exterior, and of course it has its classic phallic head. Andy is continuously reborn throughout the movie and only develops into his true self via connecting with and having his personhood acknowledged by his sister (thus defying the legend of Romulus' fratricide), then being placed in a cryo pod and promised rebirth into a new body... the first time he as an android would have ever BEEN in a 'womb'. I think Romulus does justice excellently to the sexual and birthing themes of the whole franchise, and far better than Prometheus did. Granted, it's been a minute since I saw that one, but it seriously left me cold lol. This one left me shaking with excitement.
not complaining but wanted to point out that none of these reviews seem to tend to talk about what’s prob my most fav about the alien installments: the cognitive and emotional games of chess the space travelers have to play w/ the androids in order to survive bc the synthetics’ loyalties are constantly shifting as they try to sabotage circumstances in order to preserve the alien or black goo for weyland-yutani’s purposes - all in the name of what’s “in the best interests of the company” every generation from ash to david to andy to even rook, it’s always so fun to watch
it’s such a fun parallelism commentary to explore how demonically evil and vile mega corporations are when they take advantage of workers to obscene degrees in the name of colonialism and profit margins. the way weyland yutani breached their own contracts to quite literally enslave their labor force, then dispose of em when working conditions get dangerous - it’s a tale as old as time, the ruling class of humans have been doing that since the first civilization was settled.
The android was one of the most interesting parts of the movie this time around. The arc between Andy and Rain goes a lot deeper when you realize he's aware and in control of his actions the whole time, even when he has the module in.

@@mizuslayer It definitely seems like that on the surface, but there's a few key things that he says throughout that give it away. Like when Rain asks him "how could you do that?" in reference to refusing to unlock the door for kay, he says "What, leave someone behind?" There's another part earlier when he tells her something about how he's not a child anymore. And when she comes back for him at the end but he's guarding his neck, until she convinces him to trust her. He does get a new prime directive, but I think he accepts it out of spite for Rain choosing to leave him to die once they arrive at the new planet.
He also apologizes to her after she saves him and takes the chip out.

This movie was horrible. Just a 2-hour long trailer for a possible better film in about 10 years.

Very good analysis. I would add that just as Romulus and Remus, they fed themselves by being breastfed by another species, their mother was a wolf, while in the last bit of the story, the element of breastfeeding is brought back, just like in the Romulus story, which are always depicted as two children being fed by a wolf, this image is also found inside the ship when the computer voice is explaining the division of the facilities between Romulus and Remus. Excellent analysis! I enjoyed the biblical parallels you laid out to go with the Greek mythos as well. One thing that I noticed also falls in line with the story is the human/alien hybrid is also a nod to Genesis 6:1-5. The mixing of human with angel races caused a breach in the cosmos. The Bible refers to these chaotic hybrids as Nephlim. They were giants, this can explain why the hybrid alien would be bigger and stronger than the normal ones. With the mixing of different genes there’s a natural gigantism as a result. It’s not a perfect comparison but I think it lines up enough to be part of the inspiration for the movie.

The marines must have a division of synths that are outfitted for combat against the xenos. Synths with acid resistant armor, targeting systems for various weapons types, synths with enhanced strength, durability, and speed.

I also don't think you're reading too much into the movie. Judeo-Christian ideas are so baked into Western civilization and culture that no matter how much we try to divorce ourselves from these ideas and themes, they will continue to persist in our stories on a subconscious level. Fedé Alvarez is from Uruguay, which is predominantly Christian. He most likely grew up in the faith whether he I'd a practicing Christian or not and so I'd expect much of his work to reflect Christian mythology whether he makes a conscious effort or not to incorporate it into his art.

I want you to be entertained by my work. That does NOT leave me a lot of time to put well thought through deeper meanings into my work thats nearly impossible to detect.

I did enjoy the movie and I remember queueing up to watch the original in 1979, so I've been a huge fan of the whole franchise even the bad ones however firstly I will say this is probably the best video essay I've seen of this movie, it's nice to see an an intelligent analysis, but I think you possibly give too much credit to the filmmakers. Yes I think your points are very valid and I think that is what is happening here and the obvious callbacks to old Testament and mythology are there to see but I'm not convinced the filmmakers understood this completely I think some of this is just accidental. excellent work and I'm sure I will watch this movie many times

I think some ideas in our storytelling through the ages are so sticky that we can't help but use them again and again. And I think that's because they reveal something about the pattern of reality.

Another thing I noticed was that Kay appeared to be wearing a Catholic Mary pendant around her neck. Initially I really didn't like this because I thought it was just a preverse subversion of symbolism, but the ideas put forth in the video put it in a better context for me. Mary is the "New Eve" the mother of risen humanity, and Eve is seen as the mother of fallen humanity, so maybe the necklace isn't suggesting her to be Mary, but Eve. I still don't know if I like this use of this symbolism, but this does help put it in a better light than how I originally understood it.

The opening scenes on the colony were amazing. Apart from the excellent anniversary shorts, we've never really seen the pov from the average person working for "the company". I would watch a movie or show set on a WY colony that didn't have any Aliens in it.

The substantial difference between Z-01 and Black Goo is that the former was synthesized from the cells of a xenomorph, while the latter from those of a different species, but genetically linked to the previous one.
Faster than light travel is possible because Weyland explains space-time folds and bends.
It's quite possible that the engineers are humans that have evolved using the black goo in what they thought was a successful way. Until they realised they could no longer reproduce. As a last-ditch effort, one of the 'chosen' engineers broke his dna down using the black goo on earth to create new life. (Other chosen engineers was supposed to do the same on other planets too.)
Time folds and twists, and the cycle repeats.

I love that this movie finally made me appreciate the themes of Prometheus and Alien Covenant. Beyond the plot conveniences and stupid characters, those movies were a almost biblical fable about the wonder and horror of creation, yet they fumbled the execution being too grandiose.
Alien Romulus went back to the roots of the franchise and was a small scale story, like the original. Now the lore is interesting again.
The original trilogy first started out as a full-blown horror survival movies. Now it's feeling like something completely different. Aliens is my all time favorite. I would say Romulus is the third best movie in the franchise.

I cannot agree more with you that there are definitely "religious" overtone that's subtly and cleverly woven into the storyline. It was definitely re-telling and foretelling what happened to humanity in the past with the story of the fallen angels and Nephilim and giants, "heroes" of renown. The movie also explores what ultimately might transcend albeit in a very terrifying manner the re-combining of genes of humans and those "fallen" serpent beings from the cosmos.

Most of the symbolism you put here seems too forced to me. I honestly don't think the original creators thought of depicting things like “the snake that separated man and woman” or other mystical parables when they created the alien. I think they just thought of creating an alien that enters a ship and kills everyone to make a mere science fiction movie.
The symbolism is forced and we find it only if we want to look for it, but I don't think that was the authors' intention at all.
Excellent analysis. I enjoyed the film very much. I rewatched everything prior to seeing it in the Alien universe including the Predator movies - all of them. This enriched the experience by being able to piece together a lot of the little details. This film helps establish Prometheus even more firmly as the anchor of the enterprise. Covenant also has very similar themes when you think about it. It’s of course noteworthy that the both the protagonist and the baddies are mostly women. Strong women.
I liked the whole forcing humanities evolution by integrating human's DNA with the alien's DNA
Overall it was a good movie and id watch it again. It's like they took Alien, Aliens, and Prometheus and threw them in a blender and this is what we got. It wasn't bad.
I thought the hybrid was scary asf especially when you see it in the dark background on all fours. I was like tf is that! I admit it grew really fast but I mean the xenomorph grew really fast as well. Also I found it more terrifying because we’re already experienced xenomorphs before but when this new scary looking creature comes it was wicked haha I gave the movie a 8.5/10 or even a 9/10

Alien Romulus sounds like a good movie. I plan on seeing it soon. Good to see the xenomorphs back. The xenomorph does deserve more respect.
It’s very very good. My favorite addition to the entire franchise besides the first 2.
While movies are art and we all interact with them differently I feel like Romulus had little in the way of actual symbolism described here.
There are some elements like the big chap hanging like Jesus from a cross and the etymology of names but it felt like they were for the most part shoe horned in for the sake of it not actually trying to say something more about the themes or plot of the movie.
But that’s just my take away and it was still interesting to hear the take away others had for the film and it was a fun watch all the same.
Accualy the movie is set in zeta reticuli wich is the origin of zeta greys who are future version of annunaki gods who engineered us.

In a regular infection, the xenomorph does not combine its DNA with a host. Rather, it behaves as a parasite. In Resurrection, xenomorph genes are spliced with Ripley's in a lab and in Romulus the offspring is a engineer-xenomorph hybrid.

This movie couldn't grab my attention. Was planning better scenes, reflected on life, & almost passed out, all signs of a boring movie. Came here to see if i missed anything special, great review and glad some ppl liked it. Omfg wtf was up with 5 mins of cinematography that could have been 50 seconds. Well thought out and very interesting video. Love all the analogies to historic and biblical events. I gave Alien Romulus an 8 out of 10 for a bit rushed third act.. the offsrping threw me out a bit.. and Rook's poor CGI ruined an otherwise great film. Cheers Xeno lovers ❤

Enjoyed the movie. Some frustrations like the contrast theme of escaping everything in the nick of time. Also, it was difficult to understand some of the dialogue early on due to accents and muffled sound.

They have a whole other film with what happened on romulus before this film. It would be great to see the scientists doing experiments and then things going wrong and watching them all die. That hallway scene in romulus with all those people dead in the alien cocoons. Would be awesome to see that all play out

This movie exceeded my expectations. I found it to be a great addition to the Alien franchise. But didn’t Rook say they hunted for the xenomorph from Alien that Ripley shot out of the airlock for 170 years?
If so, then this installment to the Alien franchise did NOT take place between Alien & Aliens since Ripley was in cryosleep for 57 years during this time. Instead, Romulus takes place well after the Ripley character arch.
I may have misheard Rook, but I could swear he said 170 years?
Anyone else hear him say that?

I just want to add that we must consider the origins of the Alien: Giger and his delirious art.
Alien is a sexual reference and Giger planned the things to obtain a reverse r4p3.
The snakes have vaginal shaped mouth that inseminates.
The creature is phallic and does a reverse penetration, from inside to outside.
Besides than the exterior that is taken from the painting Necronom iv.
Giger was so obsessed that they had him removed from the set of the movie.
One think I always thought as connected to the bible, beside the creation, is the fact that God created the woman taking a rib while the Alien is genereted by breaking the ribs.

I enjoyed the movie and as an Alien franchise fan , I've grown to like something about all the movies, even the hated ones. But what bugs me about all the newer Alien movies is the ridiculously accelerated gestation and growth of the Aliens. I understand the multiple reasons why they do it........ pacing , audience retention , not needing to fill the time with additional plot and character development..... but it becomes a bit comical at times. I wish they would give some explanation for it. You could excuse away the fast gestation time as its inside the body and has material to absorb but where does all the material come from for the Aliens to grow so fast and huge outside without access to organic material. In Alien:Resurrection that one guy had an embryo growing inside him almost the entire movie and it didn't burst out till nearly the end.
Romulus could have stuck to the longer Alien/Aliens gestation time for the initial impregnation and then went accelerated for the genetically modified hybrid guy.

I’m just gonna immediately say Scott slapped Star Wars in the face casting a character who looks identical to Rae, not to mention their names are nearly identical, Rain, Rae, and her colored friend was also exactly like Star Wars. Scott definitely resents what Star Wars has become like most people. Her outfit even looked very similar to Rae from star wars. And let’s be honest, this alien film is better than anything Star Wars has done in the past decade
