I’ve always wondered if Richard Kelly made Southland Tales later on either expand on the ideas of Donnie Darko or if it began indirectly as a sequel that became its own thing. Having watched it recently, there some overlap in themes and mechanics.

I think you can look at the film in many different ways depending on your mood and state of mind. In a few ways, it reminds me of 12 Monkeys which is another favorite film of mine. Great work, sir. Robert Eggers is a special kind of genius. I always find his movies boring and uninspired the first time I see them. But there are so many nooks and crannies in the story and characters that watching them again is like viewing a completely different movie.

Excellent analysis, a couple of notes: 1) the wages of sin are death: the motif of the maiden (virginity) and death is just another depiction of how a human passion when left unbridled becomes death. For example the “all is vanity” illustration (Charles Alan Gilbert) were a woman’s vanity furniture and vanity passion becomes a skull. 2) evil is the absence of good: God cannot be fully present in horror or in crime, or if it is, it will be a incomplete or distorted version of it. In the movie Shawshank Redemption is a distorted religious figure, in No Country for Old Man the final dream is the only hint of a light in the darkness. We the protagonists, must first succumb to temptation, put distance between us and salvation, before evil can incarnate.

Maureen may have been assaulted at a Hollywood party when she was young but she refused to even acknowledge her son when he tried to connect with her. He deserved to be treated way better. Maureen chose to ignore him. She chose to stay in a bad marriage. She chose to sleep around. Stop making her out to be THE victim. She was A victim like 50 years ago but she chose to have children and that meant she needed to suck up her bullshit excuses and be a good parent.

This video is very well done but I'm still going to pretend that the movies aren't related. The first arc of the ARG is just so much more interesting lore and story wise than The Cloverfield Paradox and then while 10 Cloverfield Lane is a good movie it poorly connects to the first movie and would have just been better stand alone and its crowbarring into the ARG in the second arc brought down the ARG's overall quality. Cloverfield may actually be my favorite kaiju movie though. Its one of the few movies that I watch every couple years and I always enjoy it.

I was fascinated by the depiction of the parallel theming seen in Ellen and Friedrich. Ellen is in a truly vulnerable, unfathomably lonely state when she makes her covenant with Orlok. She ignores the fact that he is this thing; a supernatural, ominous, decayed figure. Yet, considering their deep psychic connection and her susceptibility, she allows herself to be bewitched and bound to him. Later, Friedrich is shown in the mausoleum, falling apart with black plague and grief, mourning the death of his wife and daughters. His anguish, loneliness and despair is so powerful, he exhumes his wife’s corpse from her tomb and “necrophilizes” her (not a real word, I know). Reflecting Ellen, the desperation to cure loneliness is so powerful, intimate relations with a corpse becomes plausible from their inebriated perspectives. On an unrelated note, Friedrich is later seen lying dead on top of his wife’s corpse, choosing to die with the one he loves. Similarly, Orlok, with the sun rising, chooses to die with the one he loves.

@15:49 There's no profound reason for which Dr. Monnitoff can't continue the discussion. It's simply due to the arbitrary restriction put upon US teachers regarding topics of religion & spirituality. They literally aren't allowed to, or simply won't, discuss these topics in most school districts. Artifact of culture & time period.
