My home town! The Van Wezel is called "The Purple Cow". It is pronounced "Van Waysel". The Sailor Circus was also at Sarasota High School. These students went on to work in the circus as adults and many still live there. I couldn't afford to live there so I left in 1995. You MUST have $$$ to live there. We sold our home on Siesta Key in 1995 for $150,000. It just sold for $900,000. It's just an above ground home, Jeri-built. The Amish sell their homes to each other and screw up the tax bills for the Bahia Vista Rd area. I worked for the Property Appraiser in the 70's and 80's. I miss the beach on Siesta and The Garden Restaurant in the village. It's all commercial now. My husband headed up the parade for Siesta Key for a couple of years in the 1970's. Nothing is the same there now. I go back for high school reunions. #60 coming up in 2024! Oh, and I don't want to forget to say that Riverview is Sarasota's High School! :D
I lived on the east coast of Florida for a year many years ago and it was nice, but I always liked the vibe on the Gulf coast better especially between Naples and Tampa. We stay in Marco for the month of February and decided to drive to Sarasota for the day. We went to Siesta Keys, Bayfront Marina and had a great time. Went to a few open houses and compared housing prices very comparable to Marco Island. Great city.
On our list to visit Sarasota and Siesta Key. Did not know that about the Amish presence down there. We love trips to Lancaster, Pa. from Jersey. We actually have been pronouncing "Tamiami Trail" the correct way, good to know. Nice video and thank you for the great info. Have subscribed and will explore more of your content. 👍👍👍
The Amish are all mostly in one area near cross-streets Beneva & Bahia Vista. There is an excellent Amish restaurant there called Yoder's with great fried chicken and pies. Everything to eat there is good.
The biggest draw for us is live theater. Sarasota has more than it's share of excellent live performances, at reasonable prices. On the downside, long, hot, and humid summers, with red tide, and love bugs.

Hi, thanks for the comments on your video! I have never been to Sarasota and so I would like to know which beach would you suggest to to go to that is fairly close from parking area and don't have to walk too much, with bathrooms close/and/or cafes or tiki bars, concession stand near or on beach? My mom is 86 years old and cannot walk very far on the sand and needs bathrooms close by. I like Siesta Key. Marie
I would recommend Coquina Beach. It is located at the southern most tip of Anna Maria Island. This beach has facilities and ample parking. The distance to the shore is relatively close. All Manatee public beaches are ADA compliant and some may have beach wheelchairs available. I would not recommend Siesta Key. This beach is vast, the distance to the shore is much further and it will be difficult walk for one who has trouble getting around. Enjoy the FL sunshine!! Thanks for watching!
Love your videos but I think you’re wrong about renting Airbnb for a week at a time in Sarasota. We’ve been renting for 7 days for the past couple of years.
Sarasota County allows 30 days and there are a few areas that do allow weekly but it is becoming harder and harder to find. I am glad you have been able to find great options. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for your comments. I try to put a few things out that were very important for me to learn. There are so many great content creators. If I can ever be of help please let me know.
Moving from kauai soon. I run an airbnb on Kauai. I need help in knowing what places i need to look to live and rent airbnb in same house or an adjoining unit
Thanks for the insights about this little gem. I believe there's also a good opera company in place? Could you elaborate or better present to us a future video about it?
Ironically, he is a speaking coach. Another person thinking they found a hidden gem in Sarasota, once a beautiful bedroom community is now an overpopulated escape for the rich. The roadways cannot handle the influx of traffic, making it like all other major metropolises...hell for the simple man who has ALREADY lived here. Locals have to stay in their homes because of overcrowding everywhere. We see the beach if we're lucky twice a year. I have nothing against full time residents, or weekly tourists, it is the developers, snowbirds and investors that are ruining this town.
Really excellent video!!’ I just launched my TH-cam video TODAY (in Tampa), so I’m now looking with a different level of appreciation and discernment! 🤩🤩🤩
@@LivingInSarasota thank you! Love your videos. Any info on new Toll Brothers community coming on Fruitville Rd, 7 miles east of 75? I’m hoping it’s not a “Lakewood Ranch Community!”
In 1912 Sarasota was beautiful. It was abundant with wildlife and fish. Over the years greed has taken over and now Sarasota is pretty much a solid concrete slab. The once beautiful mangrove have been removed or cut so homeowners can have a nice “view”. The county commissioners approve every new community without hesitation. I guess they forgot back in 1988 Manatee and Sarasota had very bad drought and only had 10 days of drinking water left. We were lucky and had few rains and survived it. In 1925 there was a worse drought which caused the Myakka river to dry up. It will happen again and much worse as water usage is at a all time high. It’s ashamed that people don’t learn from history. However, a Cat 5 hurricane may restore this once beautiful coastal community.
I was born here in 1973. Second generation. Growing up I couldn't wait to get out if here because there was nothing for teens to do. I'm not sure about now. What I know is that this place has grown and changed so much. I am now unable to continue to live here because I can not afford it. It's like they don't want people who do service work to live here but they need us here. Many restusraunts have been opening later in the day because they can't find good help. They can't find good help because the good help can't afford to live here on what they get paid. So if you are coming here you need a good income. And please don't be so nasty. Keep Sarasota beautiful. And respect the wildlife. Learn what you should not do when it comes to gators and hogs and turtles. Thanks
Hi Paul, thanks for reaching out. Love Siesta Key and all the surrounding beaches. If I can be of help please don’t hesitate to give me a call or shoot me an email.
Moved to Sarasota in 2019 from Maryland and no regrets! Traffic gets heavier during snow bird season, but it’s only from November to Easter Sunday, and only busy until around 5pm. Beautiful city with many wonderful things to offer including several gorgeous and clean beaches.
Depending on your interests, likely a good decision. I grew up there, actually born into one of best known and oldest families in the area going back 6+ generations, and some areas were quite pristine. Studied Marine Biology and with only some exceptions the eco-systems were healthy. There were plenty of beach accesses, quiet uncrowded places to be found. If you ever have visited, there were zero sailboats parked around Island Park, only a couple boats docks at Marina Jack (now it is overrun with oversized gluttonous boats) (actually before Marina Jack was built it was City Pier and my grandparents' restaurant was out there) and the bay grass flats were healthy. This is a bit of an environmental perspective but that is my field partly. Greedy developers have ruined the skyline along the Bayfront with gawdy (to borrow your "gawd") buildings that block the views. I moved west by 20 but still return to visit huge family there.....it's a sad sight in some areas to see what the results of the mis-managed free-for-all has brought.
Best bang for your buck, what town around Sarasota has some of the best real estate prices? We're looking to possibly move there in the next few months. Thanks.
There are a few communities that are more affordable such as North Port, Port Charlotte, Ellenton, Parrish. They all are within 30 minutes of Sarasota but overall smaller and more affordable cities. If I can be of help please let me know.
@@mayor399999999999999 Bradenton borders Sarasota but it is MUCH cheaper....like if I decided to sell my home and move, yet wanted to stay in the area...I would definitely buy in Bradenton. You can get almost twice as nice of a home in Bradenton for the same price of a Sarasota home.
@@nikkigriffin08 Thank you for the insider's advice. Sarasota or Fort Myers? Pros and Cons. Im waiting on a job transfer and I have both cities as possible options.

look this up Development in the SFHA must comply with the Sarasota County Floodprone Areas Ordinance. Flood insurance is required for residential and commercial buildings in the SFHA with federally backed mortgages. This is referred to as the Mandatory Purchase Requirement.
Sarasota thinks its lined in gold . The cost to rent does not match the wages at all .. The people who keep it going are the nurses , CNAs , hard labor , motel , restraunt workers . reality check needed .
I have lived here for the past 6 years. You are correct it is very expensive. Sarasota can justify it considering all the beaches and it’s proximity to the Tampa metro area. If you look at other attractive places to live in Florida compared to Sarasota the housing cost are lower here. I know that’s insane but compared to Naples, Miami , Ft Lauderdale, West Palm, Destin, And the keys Sarasota is priced accordingly. The only three areas that are lower priced or comparable metros are Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville. I would love to see these costs go down but I only see it going up from here.
Realtor up here in Toronto. Good video, thanks. Dreaming of one day retiring somewhere warmer or having a second property there . I like Florida Gulf Coast and a bunch of our friends like Sarasota particularly, but my biggest fear about Florida is congestion. Not looking for Wyoming-like elbow room but also don't want to trade one rat race for another, even if the weather's nice. It's just so developed in the desirable areas of FL. Maybe we'll rent first in an area that our agent and our research says is good, and then see if we really dig it before buying.
Renting first is a good option however we don’t have the traffic like Orlando or Miami. It can get busy but there are lots of alternative routes in our area.
Tampa has the highest # of lighting .. I'm always shocked when I see people walking the beach my mom's best friend got struck by lightning on siesta key and died as soon as you see any lightning it's time to leave the beach!
My parents have owned property in Sarasota, SK and Osprey for years. I love Sarasota. I try to get there as much as I can. But I gotta say that the locals are about the consistently rudest people I've encountered anywhere, particularly if the believe/know you're not local. Sad but true.
Sorry to hear that. I have had the opposite experience. My neighbors have been here forever and welcomed me immediately. Everyone’s experiences are unique. Thank you for watching.
@@BGIANAKy that's entirely possible. However, I'm fairly well traveled & haven't experienced issues anywhere but SRQ. And much of the behavior happens with little or no interaction from me. Let's just be honest. This place is good for the rich or if you work for the rich ( as I do). The money game is outrageous here ( if your into the worship of money) But the more people that move here, the more work I have. I own my own handyman biz and my phone never stops ringing. So I'm torn on the growth. People in lakewood ranch are typically assholes and stuck up. They think they rule the world and they can't even change a light bulb. The rest of the people aren't too bad. If I could leave it all behind to move to the county... I would in a heartbeat. This area was country till neal homes and kb homes and all the other developers changed that. Thanks corporate America!!

i need to clearify about our amish community. they are actually mennonites. very similar but amish do not use motorized vehcles and such where the mennonite do
Fun fact ! You're both right . I worked at yoder's a while back and there's both! I asked! Amish simply follow a strict lifestyle and the Mennonites are a little more lenient . Via Bish du?!
Don't sit on top of strangers on the beach. It screams 😱 tourist. I don't want to hear you talk and you definitely don't want to hear me talk.
Eight day minimum Air BnB in City of Sarasota? Is that a fairly new law? Thirty day County. I suspect many rentals skirt the rules.
It is not new, it just is not always followed!
Your video content is so much better than what others are posting. Thank you.
Thank you for your comments. I try to put a few things out that were very important for me to learn. There are so many great content creators. If I can ever be of help please let me know.
Grew up on my summers inthe Gulfgate mall in (tropical Shores) little nice area. I would love to move back in that small little community
It's a high crime area, look at the crime stats for Florida,It would be nice for a vacation, living here you need lots of money!!
Best of luck!
Sarasota Florida use to be a nice place to live, however it has gotten to big.
Hello. What’s the spelling of the restaurant you said “divals?” Can’t find.
DuVals. Located downtown Sarasota.
Well you’re just a ray of sunshine. What happened to you in 1912 that made you this way?
@@scottbollinger3999 The ruination of this state made me this way, over building, over populated, hoping a Category 5 can restore our coastline.

Thanks

Beautiful city love it there looking to purchase a home in Siesta Keys
Hi Paul, thanks for reaching out. Love Siesta Key and all the surrounding beaches. If I can be of help please don’t hesitate to give me a call or shoot me an email.
I almost moved there, thank Gawd I didn’t.
Why?
Traffic is bad.
Did they change their rules in regards to air bnb
No, the city and county rules are still the same.
I do the Commercial Real Estate Signs in the Suncoast
There should be a big dollar sign on the bridges to it. 🌉
@@LivingInSarasota Ok. Thank you. Hoping to relocate some time this spring.
@@mayor399999999999999 Bradenton borders Sarasota but it is MUCH cheaper....like if I decided to sell my home and move, yet wanted to stay in the area...I would definitely buy in Bradenton. You can get almost twice as nice of a home in Bradenton for the same price of a Sarasota home.

look this up Development in the SFHA must comply with the Sarasota County Floodprone Areas Ordinance. Flood insurance is
required for residential and commercial buildings in the SFHA with federally backed mortgages. This is referred to as the
Mandatory Purchase Requirement.
@@NYCHairguru Let me know what you want to know about Venice and I’ll be glad to help.
@@NYCHairguru All the old folks live in Englewood and their parents live in Venice. A joke a mortgage broker told me when I moved here ten years ago.

May be you’re the problem. Ever think of that?
@@BGIANAKy that's entirely possible. However, I'm fairly well traveled & haven't experienced issues anywhere but SRQ. And much of the behavior happens with little or no interaction from me. In a number of these, I was just a third party observer. Nearly every one of these situations has involved an elderly/retired resident.
