      I feel like the context of Toedscool is lost on most people though, it is a mushroom used often in asian cooking, continuing with the heavy "food" motif (which is kind of great in my opinion). The only similarity between jellyfish and kikurage mushrooms i can think of are from a culinary point of view, as they are both low-flavour but used for texture.

    One thing I really like about this game is that the professors have a very mysterious energy to them. you never see them except on a TV screen at the beginning of the game and you only hear from them over the phone. You don't meet them in person until later and, may I just say, this is why Violet is one of my favorite Pokemon games of all time.

    • @oranplan1630
      @oranplan1630 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The TV thing actually helps sell the twist for me, in an... interesting way, I suppose.
      (spoilers)
      When I first saw Turo on the screen, I thought it was extremely stupid how they seemed to have just decided to not animate him properly. His mouth moved, but the rest of his face didn't. Nor any part of his body. I thought it was just another thing they neglected to fix, especially since all the other characters moved fine.
      But then the game revealed that the professor was an AI, and it suddenly clicked that it was *intentional*. Just a fun detail to tie it all together.

    Toedscool is great, and while I didn't really understand its inspiration at first, Bulbapedia says that it's based off a real-world mushroom that's known in Japan as the tree jellyfish, and I love it all the more for that. If I hadn't chosen Sprigatito as my starter, then I'd probably be training it as my Grass type.
    On that note, Sprigatito's final evolution looks like a Sonic and Persona crossover and I am so totally there for that. And I don't even play Persona. (Not a big fan of the particular paranormal aspects.)

    I'm only about halfway through, but Nemona is such a breath of fresh air compared to recent rivals. She's actively excited when you win because she gets off on knowing you're getting closer to her real skill level, and she can't wait to finally go all out. She's combines the vibe of always being ahead like the great rivals of old, with the kindness of newer rivals (minus the pouting about never quite catching up to you). And it just makes so much sense that she keeps losing to you, since she's supposed to be starting with a fresh team. She's already completed her playthrough, and is pushing you forward in her postgame.
    I also really like the development of the teachers as time goes on. They feel way more alive when you have to unlock further interactions with them over the course of your adventure. Even the lessons themselves are relatively useful compared to the simplistic lessons past poke schools gave on their chalkboard. They really help sell the idea of people understanding the mechanical aspect of pokemon.

    6:00 oh my goodness absolutely YES. I'm so happy they decided to bring back that dynamic music element. It's just such a good feeling that's been very much missing since Gen 5 when it was introduced.
    I love that the *crowd watching you battle* sings this song at the most climactic part of the battle. just UGH so good. so good.
    The transitions between songs in this game are just very well done overall. The Gym battles move seamlessly into this hyped up "Now's your Chance" feeling, and especially the route tunes change dynamically with what your doing. They're different when walking, riding Mirai/Koriadon, and battling too. The most important is the battling. There's not long intro like typical pokemon, the music just does a big hit like "HEY, a Pokemon!" and then adds in that JAM with a bass guitar. It felt almost like BoTW's way of doing dymanic music and it's just the best.

      I felt like the chanting fit Sw/Sh better with its particular themes (the huge stadiums and the uk’s football fan culture), but I’m glad they managed to keep it and they definitely made it work. I also appreciate the contrast in size of the gyms in the last game to the more intimate battles in S/V, which I think definitely fits Paldea’s vibe more.

    When I finished the tutorial at the academy, I remember staring at the open map and thinking "What DO I want to do first?" It was the most amazing feeling because I had this massive world to explore and I couldn't decide which path I wanted to follow first. Being that spoiled for choice SO quickly in the game is incredible. Also 1,000% agree with you on the whole "seeing a new Pokemon and wanting it immediately" thing. It's the reason I keep coming back to Pokemon again and again; the sense of discovery and wonder they still bring me.

      Tinkaton's design unfortunately has a pretty big problem. Based on its giant hammer you'd assume it has a good attack stat, so you'd naturally add it to your team thinking it's filling the role of a physical attacker. Tinkaton's Attack stat is 75. Which is pretty low. And it's kind of a problem that its design makes you misread its battle role.

      I hate it, honestly. Not that your opinion isn't valid but I'll share the other side of things. I liked when Pokemon looked like the Sugimori drawings came to life. The smoothness always made them look better in my eyes. Sometimes less is more.
      Plastering scales onto every reptilian, or a grainy texture onto every fur/leaf patch feels like a sad attempt at realism. Every big game-dev company seems obsessed with realism these days. I don't want it. It's even a little disturbing in a way. Pokemon proportions are fucked-up compared to real-world animals, the textures lead my mind to wondering how they'd function as real animals, which feels wrong. The absolute last thing Pokemon needs is insane realism. The games looked their best in Sun/Moon imo.
      Also, one last tidbit, but now the Pokemon are going to look different than the anime. The anime needs to use flat simple colors to save on resources and budget. If we keep pushing realistic textures in the games, there's going to be a weird disparity between the anime appearances of those Pokemon, and how they look in-game.

Each of the major characters involved are just such a delight. Arven is awesome, Nemona is great as a rival, but Penny’s gotta be my favorite. I want that Eevee backpack so bad.
    And the payoff in the crater? 10/10 I cried. Hitting each checkpoint felt like unveiling a new layer of clues of what the heck was going on. The chemistry between all your allies is so enjoyable, it really felt like a group of friends who were getting in way over their heads.
    I also love how terrastallizing was implemented into the story. It really felt like what Sword and Shield were trying to do, but it was executed so much better.
    Also, I love how there’s such good attention to character animation detail. It’s really noticeable in the gym leader and elite four/champion battles, the way they throw their poke balls out or unleash terrastallizing really does add to the charm and personality.

    Very much agree with number one. Whole playthrough I'm finding things I want to use like cetitan and annihlape but I just don't have space in the party because I absolutely love clodsire, I think dudunsparce is hilarious, meowscarada and ceruledge are cool, scovillain is amazing, and bisharp was already a favorite of mine so I of course enjoy kingambit alot. I might end up doing 5 playthroughs just to use everything I want to.

    I am so on the fence about this game right now. Obviously it does many great things, but I'm still finding it very difficult to justify getting it because I just don't want to support the practice of rushing out games before they're ready. Even if I could potentially look past all the technical hiccups and enjoy the things the game does well, it's still unacceptable for a mainstream pokemon gave to be released in a state like this. It's so frustrating honestly. If this game had been given enough time, it could've been amazing.

      I’m in the same place as you, @Miccat87! I’m really curious about the game, but I also think Nintendo’s decision to release such an unpolished game deserves pushback.

    • @jinho_sshi
      @jinho_sshi ปีที่แล้ว

      X amount of people giving “pushback” versus over 10 million people playing the game is nothing more than an inconvenient nutsack itch to Nintendo. Get over yourself. If you wanna play it then play it. If you don’t then don’t. It’s not that deep.

      I appreciate this take. As someone who has WoW as their favorite game I can relate to the frustration between loving the game but hating the business practices of the company that owns it. Sucks because you know the low level devs are pouring their hearts into the project while the higher ups keep them on a tight leash to focus on earnings. Minimum viable product is a phrase that comes to mind a lot nowadays like the launch of cyberpunk 2077

    When I heard the game is open world, I kept saying "No way. There has to be blocks, so you can progress." Turns out, I was shocked to learn that I REALLY CAN GO ANYWHERE. This has been something I wanted to have in Pokemon, and is kind of a first. Gen 1 is a close second because mid game is open too. As inexcusable this game is, it's surprisingly fun. Makes me frustrated in away that this is the first pokemon I've truly enjoyed since Gens 1-5, and Game Freak wanted to rush this out.

    on the story thing i completely agree with you it is REALLY good so far.... in reviews i was listening to on youtube, i was hearing other people say that they didn't like that many of the characters and that the story was so so, but is also heard how they wished there were cutscene skipping options and how they mashed through text....
    I think one of my favorite things about scarlet and violet is how alive and full the word feels (sure the pop in is not great) but every where you turn there is a new pokemon, or pack of pokemon with lots of items to pick up, definitely having a blast!
