    You just need a rubber skirt . Flat rubber about 3-4" with a thin strip of aluminum flat bar at the top and a few screws to mount it . Rubber needs to be just thick enough to not flap in the wind . Needs to start just above the hinges and extend about 1-2" below the upper edge of the door . As the door opens it will move with the door and still shed water so it doesn't drip inside while opening. Plan on it being a consumable and replace every couple of years , but it will be cheap and effective

      That's a great idea. A bar of aluminum that spans across with rubber attached... Definitely doable

      That skirt can probably go under the hinges too for a cleaner look with a matching strip on the door side for when it’s open. Like a door hinge protector for kids

    I recently stumbled across a product called RokBlock. It is a ~4” strip of rubber with self-adhesive strips along each edge. It is designed to seal the gap between the bottom of a pickup tailgate and the bed of the truck, so that opened or closed, there is no gap (so, like, if you were sweeping gravel out of your truck, it wouldn’t fall down into that gap and get jammed in there…I imagine that’s the origin of the name). I *just* bought their kit to seal my tailgate. It’s essentially the same idea as what you mentioned, a rubber seal that could just run over the top of the entire opening. Installation seems super easy and non-destructive compared to suggestions to screw in an aluminum strip to secure a rubber flap. And we all know you’re a fan of double-stick tape solutions. 😄 Though I might be inclined to maybe add screws at each end just to be safe. I assume it’s pretty solid adhesive since it’s designed to be used on trucks hauling dirt & gravel, but it is also obviously designed to be installed in a spot that isn’t subjected to highway speed wind. They actually offer two widths of their material and it may be that neither would be the right fit for your application. I have a similar issue with the rear hatch of my camper…when it’s raining, having the hatch open funnels water right into the bed of my truck. I am considering getting more of the RokBlock to divert the water.
    Okay, end of essay. 😂

    Use a Hurricane Hinge like the Tear Drop Trailers use for their Galley Doors. Search For "RecPro RV Teardrop Trailer Hurricane Hinge for Galley Hatch Door"
    You could then run flat rubber over that for extra protection. Like a Rubber Truck Tailgate Seal/Tailgate Gap Cover.
    Should work like a charm.

    Im late to the party, but here’s my idea. I would leave the hinge as is, ad a thin ribbon of flat one sided rubber tape either to the inside of the door or the outside of the camper and let the pressure of the door create the seal when closed. I prefer this over adding anything on the outside to prevent water dripping over the area, as this creates a disruption of the air flow. Im planning on building my own camper with aerodynamic airflow

    I have used EPDM sticky foam tapes for various scenarios, such as in my shower. It is super waterproof and long lasting. You could just tape some on the inside edge of you window, so that the window will just pinch the foam all along when shut, thus keeping the water out.

    I would imagine somebody already said this, on my Airstream there is a extruded aluminum gutter above the door that curves and terminates just past the top corners. Perhaps if you had something like that. (Anodized, black aluminum perhaps) above the hinges that terminates after a 90° corner that could be an option. It wouldn’t do anything for blowing sideways rain getting in the top, but most rain storms, it could certainly help.

    When life gives you a dilemma, make de lemma aid. You want something dependable that will set up fast in a hard windy rain storm. 1) What I would do is put an awning on the outside of the door, that is closed and latched to the door when you are driving down the road. The idea is to put the hinge upside down at the bottom of the door. It would open it up to a (say) 30 degree angle. Then you would and open the door and the awning would then deflect the rain back onto your roof top drainage system. 2)nd Iteration: Actually, it could be pop up tent like thing that could pulled out from behind a seat and set up when needed and you would just pop onto the door and raise the door. 3) The more I think about it, I would make a small pop up tent a little wider than the door that goes from the ground up and covers the door, but stays in place when the door is shut. It could extend out past the door a little bit. You could have a door mat, and maybe a bench seat to take off muddy boots so you can keep your floor inside, clean. There are several tent makers in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. 4) Also maybe something like this: www.amazon.com/Cabinet-Double-Drawer-Safety-Mounted/dp/B0BCK5YS3Y/ref=sr_1_59_sspa?crid=1YFGUEODUTTQT&keywords=chest+latch+that+holds+a+cabinet+door+tight&qid=1684008921&sprefix=chest+latch+that+holds+a+cabinet+door+tight%2Caps%2C101&sr=8-59-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExSk1UTUtKS1JXOEcxJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwOTQ1MjAzN1VVQkQ3WkY5WVBOJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAyNjA5MTUxVlYxUEhERzJTNko0JndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfbXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ== You would push the door against the rubber gasket and then turn the dead bolt. This is soooo fun! Thanks for asking.

    Upside down gutter channel with a weatherstrip attached to the bottom of it? For when you open it

  • @RyanC1984
    @RyanC1984 ปีที่แล้ว

    Neoprene garage door seal works, either that or like you said a neoprene strip attached above the top and bottom of the hinges, you don’t have to totally seal it just make a gutter so that it directs the water away from the gap. Sealing the gap is a waste of time, just give the water a easier way to travel that dose not involve it going where you don’t want it too.
    I used this on the inside of my old truck cap hinge. Just use some 3m double sided tape to attach it to the cab, and some screws with neoprene washers for good measure. They have many widths so you can pick what will fit.

    I'd get some Hyplon fabric ( Hyplon is the fabric that inflatable boars are made from = strong, various colors, water proof, and UV proof) - go to inflatable boat manufactors, Defender Industries (large mail order boat supplier), buy some Hyplon mastic to go with. With door in place, tape closed with duct tape (carefull try some tape on scrape to see if it pulls your paint finish off), remove hinges and glue on Hyplon tape spanning cross frame and top of hatch, replace hinges in same holes. Yahoo! You'll want dry and reasonably warm weather. As a mastic/sealer, contact cement would likely work. Always try test samples to check testability.

    The hiatus camper people have a similar problem that they solve with the hinges on their folding walls. I believe they rivet a full length piece of flexible rubber in with theirs
    Old RV’s often have rain gutters over their doors to divert water around
    Also, maybe take a look at the folding Alaskan campers to see how they seal. Good luck!

    I would use 3 or 4 inch gutter tape. I used the Nashua 3" Aqua Seal Duct Tape from Home Depot to seal the front lip of my solar panels. Holds up to 30mph headwinds going 80mph just fine. Waterproof, flexible, and cheap. I'm going to use it to seal the top edges of my side hatches of my Ovrlnd Camper. So water doesn't leak in when the hatch is up in the rain.

    Buy one of those ESI Rok Block tailgate seals to bridge the door and hinges... 4" or 7" wide, there's 3M tape on each edge, if you use the activator pen over the area you'll stick it to, it won't come off. Got it on my Tacoma and it works like a champ. Would be a perfect solution IMO... love the channel, BB

    My first thought was to use a window deflector over the hinges. Then I was wondering about a mini rain gutter above the hinges to direct rain to the sides of the door. Also for when the door is open, another mini gutter between the top of the window and the bottom of the hinges to deflect rain to the sides of the door instead of through the gap.

    • @BadassBrunette
      @BadassBrunette  ปีที่แล้ว

    • @lawrencebufford
      @lawrencebufford ปีที่แล้ว

      @Badass Brunette It could be mounted on the door just below the hinges, maybe a slight v shape to direct the flow of water to the outer edges of the door. But the gutter would not go past the outer edge of the door. Sorry, I'm not very good at explaining an abstract idea.

    This isnt a direct solution to your issue but it could help mitigate a lot of water running down when you have the hatch open if you put a "gutter " in between the truck and your awning since from the video it seems that the awning is right above the door anyways, why not try to use it to your advantage in that way? just a thought. not sure what material would fit in that specific spot but possibly a using a small L bracket (attached to your awning frame) and a piece of kydex along with silicone for a more water tight fit and feel. This isn’t super helpful this late in the game so…my apologies!
    For your future super awesome build ideas, take a look at how Super Pacific builds their wedge camper doors. They have a lip on the body of the camper itself that sticks out and then the door overlaps that lip. That lip acts like a rain gutter. Anything that makes it past the seal hits that gutter and diverts around the opening. I believe this is basically how most super cheap aluminum truck boxes keep water out. Water stays out even if the super cheap foam seals fail
    Maltec uses the opposite design on the doors that they fabricate. They have a little step up on the interior. Any water that passes the outside seal doesn’t get passed that little internal lip
    Hope that helps!
