I freaking love this game. On thing the reviewer failed to bring up was how the items work in the game. You don't always know what an item does or what effect it has on your character. You have to use it once to find out what it does and then use it up to 10 times to get the full benefit from it. Some items might even damage you the first time, only to be a much needed aid after you've used it 2 or three times and figured out what it is. This mystery to the items also extends to the world, which makes for great exploration and provides a sense of discovery I've only ever felt the first time you navigate through a Souls game. Above the style and difficulty, Mortal Shell is great for Souls fan's not because it plays like dark Souls or Bloodborne, but because the game understands the spirit of Souls games, it creates an atmosphere Souls fans will be familiar with, while being new in terms of places to visit and fresh in terms of combat. I can not wait to see what this dev team puts out next.

skrt What? Playing on PS4 and the framerate is a stable 30, it looks fantastic with film grain and motion blur disabled. The only thing that gives away the small team and limited budget is a few of the animations, the graphics are fine dude
the game is obviously inspired by dark souls, even the team said so. but at the same time it has nothing to do with dark souls also. it is its own game
@Mohammed taking tropes from a sub genre doesn't make it unoriginal. Yes the game takes inspiration from dark souls but the game has numerous elements that separate it from others.
Hats off to the team for creating such an awesome game. Considering the size, just 15, this is one of the most enjoyable and mesmerising games I've played

Finished on NG+. awesome game, a bit short and would love to have more depth (f.e. killing harder enemies is not worth at all near half of the game, as there are no rare mats or weapons to farm and you are easily maxed out, at least on main Shell), but considering such small studio - those guys and gals are absolutely amazing! Best souls-like on the market, along with Nioh and Remnant
I finished it in about 6.5 hours and got all the weapons and shells. Definitely a ton of fun and worth the 30 bucks. Playing on NG+ with weapons I didn’t use much (hammer and chisel, and the ember mace)
I wish the parrying attacks carried more weight behind them. I can’t put my finger on it. It’s almost like the sword stab is too smooth and there’s no reaction from the enemy’s stabbed torso.
I honestly have loved way more souls like games than I have Bloodborne or Dark Souls themselves. Sundered, Dead Cells, Deaths Gambit, Salt & Sanctuary, The Surge, Remnant, and this. Loved them all way more to be frank.
I don't see how successfully condensing a genre into a shorter version of it's predecessor, for a reasonable price, is a drawback. I'm actually really glad that some developers understand that making a 200+ hour game is not a necessity, especially when every gamer is struggling with a backlog full of games we will never have time to play.
@@officialgamerz29 I completely agree, I'm just saying that it shouldn't be an obligation and I don't understand why most game critics take the longevity of a game into account when marking them.

Funny story. Several years ago, I bought Dark Souls and returned it the same day. Somebody told me the game would only piss me off but it looked interesting and I was into the dark theme. Unfortunately, I couldn’t hang with it. Fast forward to today, after a few days of trying and trying and trying, I finally have a full understanding of Mortal Shell’s mechanics and am having a blast with it. It’s as if you had to unlearn the hack and slash style gaming of action RPGs. Now that I get it, I suddenly have an affinity towards souls like combat games. So much so that I’m going to give Dark Souls another chance after I complete Mortal Shell. Once the mechanics click, you feel like a badass. I had a “Aha!” moment once I picked up on how you’re supposed to play the game. This also caused me to think about other games in a completely different way. Just give it a chance and don’t immediately give up. Take your time. It does require some patience to unlearn how you previously played and thought about games if you’re new to this genre. I never thought I could get into it but now, I love it and can’t get enough of playing Mortal Shell.
I too rage quit after about an hour...... killing a total of 12 enemies within like 30 min. While dying about 8 times wasn't fun for me 🤣 it's funny cause i like sekiro though

Souls-like really pointing out to Dark Souls or Demon Souls? I think it should be Demon Souls as it was release on 2009 where as Dark Souls 1 was release 2011
I played it on ps4 and I won't go beyond a 6/10. Some performance issues like horizontal attacks skipping frames and being faster/hitting sooner than they should, rolling inputs not being read or being really delayed, getting hit through hardened state, button prompts being delayed, mainly when trying to recover a shell, going through enemy attacks, having enemies attack right after a riposte as if all you did was tickle them, happens mostly in the eternal narthex, especially the born twice boss. Item consumption is painfully slow, the effects activate quickly but the animation goes for long time. Fast Travel and Parry need to be unlocked, Parry is pretty easy to unlock, there's no way to not do it but fast travel can take some time, especially if you don't know wich shell you wanna use, cause you need a fully upgraded shell before you can purchase the fast travel item. I actually had to restart my save because I had spent time leveling and trying each shell so I was underpowered and lacking the necessary skills. Not very friendly for a first playtrough. Graphics aren't bad but the environments are pretty dull, the Shells and weapons look nice but everything else is quite repetitive. The bosses aren't too tough if you do your level up right, traversing the environments though will be painful especially if there's ranged enemies nearby. Since you have no ranged options.
