I'm super experienced in DS but holy fuck is Mortal Shell absolutely kicking me in the head. I absolutely love the game even though I'm still in the first area. It gives me a challenge and I love it.
it was hard for me until I upgraded my weapon and got a new shell. With Solomon and Edrim shells way easier. Also once upgraded shell skill trees easier.
I never took a left and saw the shell and I went through a quarter of the game and two bosses getting one shot by everything and being really confused until I got frustrated in the eternal area with the hitscan fire arrow guys and I died within seconds of them being on screen so I looked up a guide and wanted to hurl myself out of my window.
Fun game, if you haven’t got to them already, every time the flame knight does an unblockable, harden then almost immediately parry to prevent him from going into his regular chain, made the fight so much easier.
I almost gave up on this game, but that was because I ran past the 1st armor. I played and played and kept dying from 1 hit. I wanted souls game to play badly that I stuck with it. I found my first body/armor and everything seemed sooo much easier. I honestly don't know how you were able to explain this game, but it was fabulous!!
Like many people I just got the same free on PSN after just playing through bloodborne again, was having a lot of trouble. Going to be putting these tips to use soon! Thanks!
Parrying is super hard for me, controls are laggy and there is plenty of jankiness in physics and combat. Combat is more cheesy, less flexible than DS/BB. Short, grindy, artificial longevity due to difficulty and having to run for minutes after each death. Good atmosphere though. Still, the best souls-clone after Fromsoft games.
I came to watch this after completing the first temple thinking I was still severely under-knowledged for this game. This made me realize the game did a pretty decent job teaching me this stuff as I actually knew all of the tips here. My only point of frustration was when I accidentally found that shell with crazy stamina and suddenly I just kept dying to everything. Once I stumbled on to the Solomon shell the game suddenly became manageable again. Don’t ask how I found that one first… I just explore obsessively and didn’t even realize there was the home base at this point. So I just kept respawning at the beginning of the game. It was a nightmare 😂
This is super helpful. I decided that, though I tend to suck at most soulslike games, I wanted to try Mortal Shell and see if I can do it and though I'm having trouble with the timing using the harden ability, I'm not finding it as frustrating as I usually get with games where dying over and over is to be expected. Hopefully, I'll have the patience to persist with this one.
@@TheMuddler3030 I got angry dying tothe first boss over and over so I took a long break and because I'm apparently a masochist, I decided to try Nioh again. Absolutely fantastic video. Succinct, mentions everything you need to know without being confusing or spoiling much of anything, really helps newbies. I'm ready to start.
Played all FromSoft games, have a Bloodborne platinum, and finally took a plunge on MS yesterday cause I need something to occupy me until Elden Ring. Really like it so far. Not doing as bad as I thought reading the comments. Main thing is just like dark souls, fight one enemy at a time.
This just came on game pass so I tried it, died more times than I can count and nearly gave up but oddly enough I found the best shell/body for me as a newbie was eridrim the tank. He has the least stamina but having to conserve the energy made me slow down my pace and forced me to fight smarter and the massive health really helps to learn without dying quick. As solomon I would get into the habit of rolling too much and be out of stamina getting killed. Plus you can run to his shell pretty quickly and get it.
I would never have played Mortal Shell if not for Xbox Game Pass. Honestly, the Epic Game store pushed me away from it. Which is unfortunate because I have never had this much fun in a Soul-like since Bloodborne. It’s hard yes but that’s what forces you to master it like Sekiro. You’ll never finish if you don’t figure out the mechanics. I love that in video games. No HUD, no UI markers, just completely immersion.
Bro I could’ve gotten like all of the shells at the start of the game cause I explored the tunnels but I got scared of the monster that guards the bodies so I ran
I was litteraly in the same boat as you.... I've beaten every fromsoft title since demon's souls on ps3 yet when I played this game it just felt awful... I loved the look it has and love and atmosphere and all the nods to ds1 but the damn combat just ruined it for me.... Then the new mortal shell version came out and decided what the hell, I'll give it another go. Watched your guide and it helped immensely and it all started to click..... So tysm! Awesome and underrated guide!
Man, you need to go back further than PS3 and play some of From Sofware's PS1 and PS2 games. King's Field, Shadow Tower, Kuon, Eternal Ring, Evergrace, Tenchu etc.
Very helpful! This was my first game like this to play and even though it’s frustrating at times, I’m still really enjoying it. It’s rewarding when you do accomplish something because it doesn’t come easy like most games. Awesome work!
I put 3 hours into this game having 100% completed all three souls games and I was humbled by the no true heals and minimal dodge ability. I also spend half of that time without a shell because i didn’t know about it… 😅 and the other half I spend running down one path thinking it would take me to a bonfire or something… it was only until the last 15 mins I found all the NPCS and I was too frustrated and tired to move on. I’ll try it more today because of this video 😊
Man, I bought this game about 8 months ago and am starting it tomorrow morning. I’m so excited! I recently spoke to my cousin who loves this game but became stuck. I searched for videos, and this very helpful one is the video I watched. Thank you so, so much! I can’t wait until tomorrow and I’ll share my findings with my cousin. Much love.
Such a sick , sick game. But if you go into it never playing it or playing games like it then damn… it is solid. But it’s art style is crazy and everything fits so nicely. I went into it not having high expectations tbh.. just thought it was gunna one of those empty games but was knocked back with how brutal it is . Really enjoying the game and it’s dark style.

Because of Epic Games Free game promo, I got the game yesterday. Couldn't believe that Grisha is recommended for experienced players, but I manage to down it after 10+ attempts, AND while using the beginner shell. Nice.
I bought this game yesterday without watching anything about it. After I started playing it I directly ran to the old castle because it looked cool and discovered there the long sword from one of the bosses(which I didn't know it was on lol) and ran to him and fought him to get it
I was just thinking "with that red color the scholar shell looks a lot like the armor Gary Oldman was wearing in Bran Stoker's Dracula" then I saw how when you unlocked said The Count and I was like "huh."
For anyone getting started and loves the hallowed sword, yes it's probably the best of the 4 for boss fights, here's a little combat combo tip: LIGHT hit, HEAVY hit, HEAVY hit, SPRINT HEAVY hit. the last sprint heavy hit is optional but cuts thru the animation of the whole repel moment.

I just got this game for free on my PS plus for December. So this video will come in very handy for a newbie like me. Thank you for this very informative video!!
If you have the virtuous cycle dlc, you can unlock all weapons and shells to unlock hadern and his weapon, the axatana. It has a dual blades mode, and an axe mode. Press LB+RB (or L1+R1 if you are on ps) to switch modes. You don't need to find the resolve ability for it, as it is already unlocked when you get it. Press LT+RT (or L2+R2 if on ps) to use your resolve ability. Hadern is the most balanced character in the game, having health not as high as Eredrim, but higher than every other shell. Same with stamina, not as high as Tiel, but higher than everyone else's stamina. He can also use one of every Shell's upgrades. Hadern is a jack of all trades, so if you get the dlc, make sure to get hadern. HOW TO UNLOCK: Once you obtain all weapons and shells, go to fallgrim tower, go upstairs and at the weapons section, you will see hadern. Talk to him and he will ask you if you want to glimpse one last time. Press yes and a boss battle will begin. Hadern has the axatana, and he has two phases. A dual blades phase, and an axe phase. Defeating Hadern will result in him sinking in the water, and a tombstone will appear. Interact with it and you will unlock Hadern. Once back in fallgrim tower, speak to hadern again to unlock his blades. Speaking to him again will open hadern's shop, containing his Effigy, Weapon summon, and the clockwork lute. Hope this helps!
I think if Darksouls would look and play like this, I could get into it more. I just like the way combat feels here better than DS.Really hyped about Elden Ring though :D after seeing the leak.
This is clunky as hell and extremely niche compared to ds1-3. The atmosphere from this game litteraly is 100% inspired by ds3 and bloodborne so idk what you mean by if ds looked like mortal shell. If it's outdated graphics you're talking about then the demon's souls remake is absolutely beautiful and if you have pc you can have ds3 and sekiro look absolutely amazing with a mod plus high framerate.
Dark souls has more calculated attack system. Im digging mortal shell, it is way easy in comparison to any fromsoft game though because of stamina, dodging is over forgiving. Mortal shell is a cool little game that'll tide me over until elden ring though. I've platinumed all fromsoft games
Haha I had no idea about the frog changing your appearance shader I saw him from a distance and decided not to go up to him until later I figured it was a mini boss or something lol
Only ever had a small go at one of the dark souls games so this type of gameplay is new to me and holy crap I spent at least two hours getting sent back to the opening of that first cave... After that I began biding time with enemies and memorising their attacks. I'm so glad I watched this because after wandering fall grim and scratching my head I finally ended up in one of the dungeons without ever entering the tower so will definitely be heading out of the dungeon now... Also like the little tip about playing the frog the lute to change your shell shade, thanks 👍
Thta's correct. A gammer in the beginning of the game will feel totally lost. I myself just didn't dropped it completelly thanks to spoilers because I had no idea what what the objective of the game! Then I started to like it and did it all the way up to the end.
Oh my god thank you the first I did because I thought there was gonna be a boss in there was not go to fallgrim tower and instead go to gore the giant frog.
Lmao bruh I seen that frog smiled and turned around thing scared me!! And same I saw a shadow figure and heard about the endless bosses so I chose not to go and was wandering till that guy on that little path striked me down 😢I didn’t even have a chance to block 😂i died over 10 times already but this game seems fun Ima play it more
This video is really helpful I watched it after I beat the martyr before I ever got to the tower Edit: also when taking a weapon is there a way to quickly change your weapon back to other weapons you’ve found
@ 14:21 it shows a enemy triggering a bear trap, I'm guessing these traps can also hurt the player as well if you go over it, is that correct? Is the player able to place these traps down or are they already there?
First time I opened this game, roughly after 15-30 minutes of struggle I gave up (even though I already had some experience with souls like games as I've already finished Elden Ring and DS2). Few weeks later I gave it another try and after another 30 minutes I gave up again. Third try is a charm and few weeks later I tried again... something clicked, I wouldn't move from PC for the whole day and completed the game in one go. Mortal Shell is a blast of a game, with an amazing potential. I hope they release MS2 one day, with a much bigger world and with some additional improvements. Also would be nice if the world wasn't completely the same except for the 3 boss areas, but I understand it was part of the lore. Shifting Archives were jaw dropping, so many times I've stopped just to enjoy the scenery. My only complaint would be the difficulty - it starts off extremely hard, but after couple of hours it just feels too easy for a souls like game. As far as I recall I haven't even died to any of the main bosses even once... and I'm an ok'ish gamer without any special skills. For comparison Elden Beast took me 50-100 attempts. There is something magical in the satisfaction after these highly difficult fights, learning the move sets, slowly improving and finally achieving the goal by slaughtering those happy napkins. I missed that feeling in MS.
I'm convinced after a few hours of aimlessly wondering and dying that only masochists go long enough to beat this game. Like I enjoy it....but sweet Alaskan asparagus tips I hate it
3:12 Only issue I have with the game is the incredibly odd combo timing, sometimes movement can cancel the combo... I think? Usually on heavies it kinda works. I know the light attack of the hallowed sword has a long recovery animation that can be canceled very early, like over a second long so it's hard to tell when you can get the starting heavy thrust by pressing heavy or the mordhau (holding sword by the blade) strike. Usually not a problem if you light then heavy because the second heavy is almost as far reaching.
I haven't got a clue. I got this game over a year ago, and I deleted it. I am so bad at Souls games. Luckily, it was on sale. Maybe I will give it another go. Thanks for the video 📹
Watching this in 2021.. I just got this game 2 days ago, I love the game, I'm really good at it suprisingly, and I really love the gameplay! Thanks for the tips but I knew half of them Lmao
I wish that the seal would glow when you COULD parry and not the other way around, something about this way just made me disassociate the controls so hard
How I have the parry item without going to that part of the tower? I'm confused. I talk with my sister and then get into a body of my choice and play. There is a lot I need to learn I see. Oh and btw I'm playing Tiel with the 2 weapons. Good damage and agility but fragile. I don't like the stiffness of the other classes. Thanks for the video!!! Very useful!
Love the way it looks on Series S. I got it for my Xbox One S and I lost some interest in figuring out the combat. Now that I’ve got the enhanced edition on a better running console, I’m loving it. 😂 I find it harder than Dark Souls (maybe 2 and 3, nothing harder than the OG.)
You know something I found out the camera you can go forever I mean by that it can go anywhere automatic deposes pretty much a save point before you even get a freaking chance to get cut down very fast I usually use that for a scouting head
Parry timing is different for each and every attack type, even for the same enemy. Some enemies are notoriously difficult to parry, making it not worth the effort (fog creatures, Narthex inhabitants) The good news is - parrying is not necessary to win the game. Also, there are at least 2 enemy types in the game that every player will figure out how parry at least one of their attacks 100% of the time.
Something I discovered by accident, is that Photo Mode doesn't appear to have any limit with how far the camera can move from the character. So you can pretty much use it to scout the map.

@@TerminalM193 we need another bloodborne game. I'll pass on the remaster of the original, I don't want to go back and platinum a remaster as well🤣🤣🤣
Haha I had no idea about the frog changing your appearance shader I saw him from a distance and decided not to go up to him until later I figured it was a mini boss or something lol
Underrate game, also super short.. shame.. would love for some more.
Eyyy that's what I did. Was it the dungeon with the longsword and ice boss?
Thanks so much! Really helpful.
And same I saw a shadow figure and heard about the endless bosses so I chose not to go and was wandering till that guy on that little path striked me down 😢I didn’t even have a chance to block 😂i died over 10 times already but this game seems fun Ima play it more
This is my first soulslike and I’m getting dark souls 3 and I find it quite interesting, but the difficulty is really new to me
So thanks to thus guide, I found out that you can heal, buy things and parry. Would've been useful before the ice slave boss thing
Upgraded Edition is on PlayStation premium , gonna give this a try , thanks for the video 👍
This video is really helpful I watched it after I beat the martyr before I ever got to the tower
Edit: also when taking a weapon is there a way to quickly change your weapon back to other weapons you’ve found
@ 14:21 it shows a enemy triggering a bear trap, I'm guessing these traps can also hurt the player as well if you go over it, is that correct?
Is the player able to place these traps down or are they already there?
got it free with ps+. i just started playing and wow..its pretty challenging, but fun. im liking it..gotta get the hang of the controls a bit.
Thanks for this video I have some hope on the game now
Did you notice, also the Cat headbangs wegen playing the guitar Thing
100% Elden ring. Looking for another challenge. Thanks for this upload still useful till this day.
Hey I subscribed because thia video was super helpful and i appreciate it
I forgot to mention, To dodge nonstop is so op because literally nothing can even hit you LOL
Great video very helpful thank you!
This video was incredibly helpful. Ty
I'm convinced after a few hours of aimlessly wondering and dying that only masochists go long enough to beat this game. Like I enjoy it....but sweet Alaskan asparagus tips I hate it
Okay. You explained really well that this will be frustrating for me. On to the new game i go 👋
Rhanks that was quite helpful 🤜🏻🤛🏻🙏🙏🙏
3:12 Only issue I have with the game is the incredibly odd combo timing, sometimes movement can cancel the combo... I think? Usually on heavies it kinda works. I know the light attack of the hallowed sword has a long recovery animation that can be canceled very early, like over a second long so it's hard to tell when you can get the starting heavy thrust by pressing heavy or the mordhau (holding sword by the blade) strike. Usually not a problem if you light then heavy because the second heavy is almost as far reaching.
Gamepass comes in clutch again 🙌
Amazing review Sir
I haven't got a clue. I got this game over a year ago, and I deleted it. I am so bad at Souls games. Luckily, it was on sale. Maybe I will give it another go. Thanks for the video 📹
its terrible for a souls-like, Lies of P is far better
Man I might have to redownload this. I don't know what the enhanced edition is but I definitely enjoyed beating it a couple of 3 or 4 times lol
Platinumed all fromsoft games, going to dive into this before elden ring
Briliant stuff!
Watching this in 2021.. I just got this game 2 days ago, I love the game, I'm really good at it suprisingly, and I really love the gameplay! Thanks for the tips but I knew half of them Lmao
Superb video. Well done, sir!
Tks Man, great video
Great, shell shocked by the chain ads that happen under 3mins..nice
12:21 had me dying lmao! 😂
this guid awserd all my questions thnx.
Felix speaking Italian makes me laugh so hard even when his pronunciation is on points
I wish that the seal would glow when you COULD parry and not the other way around, something about this way just made me disassociate the controls so hard
great stuff
The huge frog. Do u play any song. Or have to feed him stuff aswell?
This game is very interesting, can see the souls influence but its different.
Good vid, I was lost, now I'm found
I definitely need help with this one.
Is this game really worth the struggle?
You know something I found out the camera you can go forever I mean by that it can go anywhere automatic deposes pretty much a save point before you even get a freaking chance to get cut down very fast I usually use that for a scouting head
Only problem I'm having is the parry. I know my timing is right with what it should be but it just feels like the timing needs tuning at times.
You have to parry on anticipation and not on reaction since it has a small wind up. Thats the Main difference between dark souls parries and this game
Parry timing is different for each and every attack type,
even for the same enemy. Some enemies are notoriously difficult
to parry, making it not worth the effort (fog creatures, Narthex inhabitants)
The good news is - parrying is not necessary to win the game. Also,
there are at least 2 enemy types in the game that every player will
figure out how parry at least one of their attacks 100% of the time.
The get hard joke got me 😂
If you hold circle while in the tunnel you crawl faster
Bonus the lute also causes enemies to Agro you instantly
How did you get your suit red?
It’s a skin (or ‘shade’ as they’re called in the game) obtained by trading consumables to the giant frog. Google it for the requirements.
never played a game close to this I am currently crying in a corner
