    My dad checked me outta school early the day Return of The Jedi came out to go see it. I was 10 yrs old. I teared up when Vader died. One of the coolest things my dad ever did. A very special memory. May you rest in peace dad. ❤

    Fun fact: the reason palpatine didn’t see Vader’s betrayal coming is because it wasn’t an act of selfishness, it was an act of love of his son, and he wanted to save him.

      This just popped 4 me, & I'm just sticking my head n here 2 ask y'all about something...I saw them all n theaters starting at 6 yro n '77, & has been a while since saw the originals. I thought I recently saw original footage from Empire Strikes Back that showed there was a different Emperor. Watching reactors watch them I had been thinking how cool it was that the Emperor here & n the prequels was the same w/ just heavier make-up 2 b able play him 13 yrs later. Then saw a clip like this the other day that showed a different "original" Emperor, so thought they just went back & replaced him when added cgi & extras & I just forgot? Only 2 c this w/ Emperor from prequels. Can somebody enlighten me so I don't have 2 research what's going on? Was I watching unreleased footage of replaced original Emperor???

    For any kids who grew up with a father with an addiction, this scene gets more poingnant over time. We all wished our true dads made the same choice as Vader and threw their Emporer into a chasm. Deep down, we knew it wasn't really our dad shooting the pain at us. Anybody who saw or sees this scene this way, has become a better person for it. Thanks, George. A part of me owes to you the happiness of my family.

    I could only imagine what it would have been like to be a kid during these movies. The hero you've grown to admire is completely defenseless and suffering and he's alone. You try imagining ways he'll get out because the hero always wins, but there's only him and two really evil bad guys in the room and his friends aren't even on the same ship. And then suddenly the imposing villain of three movies that scared you whenever he came on screen saves your hero. And now you have to work out what happened and maybe you start to believe there can still be good in bad people like Luke did.

      @@jonnyfevertv3170 Yeah im a Young Adult now and I can't really find anybody that stands out, but I think that's okay, Star Wars is amazing, and I enjoy it every year with my Dad who grew up with it, but in current day media I think things start to lean towards creating your own person within fictional universes instead of embodying a specific character. Take the Spiderverse movies, they are amazing movies that should be considered art and you see people creating their own spiderman with a unique twist that represents them.
      Despite this though (in terms of star wars), I think a lot of people from my generation look up to Hayden Cristensen and Ewen McGregor as they were like our 'Luke and Vader' growing up, (and Hayden literally plays Anakin/Vader really well).
      Also screw the sequels, they do not compare at all to the OG or even the prequels in terms of storytelling (prequels got weird with CGI but they got better in the 2nd and 3rd installments haha)

    You know, you have to imagine what's going through the audience's mind at this very moment in time. Up until then, we hadn't really seen the Emperor or even knew how powerful he was. Hell, we didn't even know force lightning was a thing until VI. The audible gasps give an indication of the shock many must have felt in the moment, and the crying and the screams of terror of what's unfolding before them - _Will Luke die?? Is Vadar gonna let this happen??_ It's impactful moments like these that really make a film memorable and/or good. And then the clapping at the end when Vadar, at the cost of his life, picks up Palpatine and throws him off the balcony - they're rooting for the now-redeemed villain.

      Force was not so forceful in that period 😁Biggest trick was tossing things around, rest was the lightsaber combat and Emperor did not have any. We all expected he would do something, but no one expected he would totally overpower Luke. Luke was built up by Episode VI, and he was shown to be powerful Jedi, seconds before beating Vader. Thus him being on the floor, helpless, pleading his father to help him (father whom he just humiliated ), made enormous contrast and impact on audience.

      @GothRailfan ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@aleksazunjic9672 The Emperor was very skilled in lightsaber combat, it's just in the original trilogy according to the later canon, he thought lightsaber combat to either be barbarous or that he just wanted to conceal himself as a Sith Lord to the galaxy population. The only Jedi that put up a fight against Sidious were Mace Windu, and Yoda. Had Vader not burned on Mustafar and put into a life support suit, Vader could've put up a fight against Sidious as well.
      The broader population never really saw Palpatine after the Empire was founded. They were aware of his rule, but never really saw him. Like did the Empire really put up propaganda posters on buildings with Darth Vader or himself on them? Not any that I saw. He became recluse and studied the dark side in secret which only Darth Vader really knew.

Yoda also did not have one, but he was shown as hermit, sort of old monk- sensei known from eastern marshal arts movies. This is an entirely character driven moment. If you’re cheering for this, it means you must’ve well understood the extremely heartwarming core of the scene, and THAT’s what you’re cheering for. These people are not going crazy for a character doing the cool thing, they are going crazy for a character doing the RIGHT thing.

      (And btw this is coming from someone that works at Galaxy's Edge, who's typing this on a Millennium Falcon themed computer in a Star Wars themed office.)
      2. People didn't like Return Of The Jedi when it came out.
      3. No one really cheered in movie theaters back then. That's really a modern thing. Back then, it was exceptionally rude. If you even whispered, you were kicked out and people would be mad at you. Even today, some hate that it's even a thing now.
      4. I think cheering in a movie for any reason just makes it all the more fun. My theater for Rise Of Skywalker cheered, (bad example, but they did.) And Endgame and No Way Home were my two favorite movie going experiences of all time just because of all the nerd energy being thrown around and the fact that people were shouting and standing and cheering.

You can tell that this audience feels the same as I do when they watched this scene, I feel pain listening to Luke's screams, and I always liked how Ian McDiarmid delivers each line of his, an incredible performance, he's the only Emperor Palpatine. Also when Palpatine is killed and we see all those ghostly shadows, amazing vfx from 1983, after ESB, ROTJ has the best visual effects from the OT.

    • @sambrainard3487
      @sambrainard3487 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Let me break this down:
      1. The quality is extremely high for something filmed in the 1980s. In that alone, this is already a suspicious video. The person who uploaded the video tries to account for this lapse in logic by putting in the description that a 'local news segment' filmed the audience reaction, but I'm calling bullshit on two accounts.
      a) It's a felony to record movies in the theatre, period. No exceptions.
      b) As another commentor mentioned, there's people making meme noises.
      2. The uploader claims that this clip was a 'newly discovered clip,' and yet it's nowhere else on the internet. Are we actually supposed to believe that the guy who's already posted audience reactions to Star Wars movies in the past and constantly indulges in Star Wars stuff on his TH-cam channel is the finder and sole possessor of this film footage? Isn't it interesting that the uploader provides no details for the film footage as it exists today? Just conveniently, all of the details provided cannot be factually verified or checked?

    Anakin still sticks with his own philosophy seen in the prequels here, his fear of losing a loved one is so big that he would do anything to stop the people he loves from dying, after Padme died he tought he had no one left in the universe, thus making him fully convert into Vader, remember he thinks Obi-Wan is a traitor and he fears Palpatine, but never truly likes him, but when he met Luke, the whole sentiment he had for his loved ones back in the prequels kicked right in, and he finally realised that Palpatine was the true menace that was trying to kill his family, and he finally realized he was wrong this whole time, and died as Anakin regretting every single choice he made as Vader

      @@bb-gc2tx Your kids will surely have a good time as well growing up, with someone who had such a good time as a kid. Idk about the sports events bc I'm from Europe and 25 y.o. but I can imagine that must've been mind blowing to experience

    I watch this when I was 10 years old and when Darth Vader picked up the Emperor and threw him down the Shaft the whole theater jump up and cheered like it was game winning touchdown. To this day I haven't seen a reaction like that.

    I will NEVER forget this. I was 6 years old and so overcome with emotion that I was frozen in my seat, staring at the screen with the most incredible combination of total shock and complete joy that after all Vader had done, his love for his son brought him back to the light. What an amazing memory, and to be honest, the whole story of the battle of good and evil within us all told brilliantly through the journey of Luke and Vader was MASSIVELY influential in shaping me as a man. Thank you, Mr. Lucas.

      @@Arloeg Too young for what? To have those realizations? I guess I wasn't. I distinctly remember talking about it with my mom on the drive home and expressing my shock that after everything Vader did, there was still good in him, and it was seeing his son in pain that brought it out. I still remember my mom saying, "Never underestimate the power of a parent's love for their child." Maybe all of that would have been lost on most 6 year olds, but not me. The power of that moment is burned into my memory for life.

    I can't lie... something about hearing the unbridled joy in the original audience reaction that gave me goosebumps. Almost shed a single tear.
    They waited years for it. This is so pure.

      no way in hell this is 1983 dude - first all they didn't have vhs camera's that could film in the dark, 2 you would have been kicked out and 3 the audience reaction the night this came out was near riot level - nice try but you're full of shit
