    James Earl Jones spoke at my graduation from University, and he included "May the Force be with you" in his speech. Despite the fact that the character of Darth Vader never actually said it in the films, it was a pretty cool send-off into the world when I got my undergraduate degree.

      I've never quite understood why Vader would even say this line.
      It says too much, since the force isn't something that everyone adopts. Only a very tiny group know anything about the force. So everyone would be pretty oblivious that there would be any real faith in the force. It would all just seem like some ancient mumbojumbo.

    Just demonstrates what a great guy JEJ was. He recognised Prowse had done the acting on-set, interacted with the cast, with all that demanding physicality and discomfort in full costume, and that DP deserved credit for that.
    Declining to be credited for his own *iconic* voiceover work was an incredibly selfless thing to do. The quality of his work was its own reward.

In Rebel One before you see Vader or his lightsaber you hear the breath, and you know that every rebel trooper in that corridor is now dead. He was never a calculatingly intelligent man so it totally makes sense to me he'd be angry at the young officer's lack of faith, or was seriously inviting Luke to 'join us'. we are sooooooo incredibly lucky to have yet another go around with the voice of Darth Varder, James Earl Jones. who in his most senior age of 91 has yet again had the strength and power to reprise his role as Darth Vader. My only gripe about the whole starwars property is that they dont acknowledge the man as they really should.

    James Jones is such a class act. He is held in very high esteem not only as a screen actor but even more so on the stage. He’s been in so many famous plays. Sunrise At Campobello The Blacks, Merchant of Venice, Othello, etc etc etc. he also had a terrible stutter when he was young. What a titan of entertainment.

    Such a cool video! I know this is mainly focused on the cinema part of things but since we dove into sound design and other aspects that made DV iconic, I think John Williams score is equally instrumental in making this character the force he is, as well as all the other things you mentioned!

    Everybody is always making fun of how Hayden delivered his lines so flat, but I really do think he's doing that purposefully and perfectly. Listen to how he delivers his lines in the movies vs in real life. When he's playing Anakin you can hear this distinct drawl that is very akin to James Earl Jones'. Such as the lines "You will try" or "My powers have doubled since the last time we met Count".

    • @absolutezero523

      Yeah he intentionally mimicked the way Jones talked in the OT

    • @JacenSolo0
      @JacenSolo0 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      No no that explanation won't do at all. Even if that were the case it is conveyed in such a way that it sounds wooden rather than deliberately evocative of JEJ. It's Lucas fault for the script Hayden probably didn't know how to read them. A colder voice would've gone down better for the movie.

    • @absolutezero523
      @absolutezero523 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      @@JacenSolo0 he gets the colder voice from the mask (lore-wise) and also Anakin wasn't evil at that point, he just talked with the same drawl as JEJ, which was flat. The flat voice was what made Vader so ominous: he talked simply, but the deep voice made it pop. Hayden did not have the deep voice, but he had the same flat drawl.

    • @JacenSolo0
      @JacenSolo0 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@absolutezero523 Then why is it by the end of his life he retains the sharp,clipped vocals when he is unmasked ? If that's what Hayden Christensen was going for I.e. imitating the monotone nature of Vader then he really didn't get it very well at all. Would've been better if he tried to soften out his American accent and obviously Lucas should have given him lines more suitable for someone who's transitioning into Darth Vader. Not quite sure what you mean by drawl. I don't think JEJ had any particular drawl and it certainly wasn't like Anakin's.

    • @absolutezero523
      @absolutezero523 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@JacenSolo0 just the way he accents different words when he speaks from those that a normal person would. Ex: "you will try." A normal person would accent the word "try," while Christiansen, like JEJ, accents "will."

    Moral of the story - Film is a collaborative effort. If it wasn't for James Earl Jones's voice, David Prowse's body language, George Lucas's script, and Ben Burtt's sound design, we wouldn't have Darth Vader at all today. Each of them played a major part in bringing the character to life, nobody overshadows anyone in my personal opinion. They all deserve credit for this.

    James Earl Jones is one of my all-time favorite actors. From serious roles like being the voice of Vader to comedic roles like the King of Zamunda and appearances on The Big Bang Theory...............There is never a dull moment with him!!
    Once he goes to the "Upper Room" there should be a Vader statue within Disneyland and Disneyworld in honor of him!! In the meantime, Id LOVE to meet him one day

    I love Star Wars and I respect how George Lucus pays homage to Kurasawa. I think he needs to recognise that he 'borrowed' some ideas from Doctor Who. As a kid in the 70's I remember watching a repeat of an old DW episode of the 3rd Doctor, Jon Pertwee. The episode had one of the doctor's alien enemies in it called the Ice Warriors. The leader of the Ice Warriors looked like a green Darth Vader. He also spoke like him and did the whole breathing thing too. My friend and I were playing the characters the next few days, copying the deep voice and breathing. A few years later we watched the first Star Wars movie in the cinema. We noticed the similarities of DV and the Ice Warrior leader immediately.

    You never really think about the breathing, but it really does make his character. And the end of the video, when you show Davis Prowse side y side with James Earl Jones, it really hit home the difference.
    As for Vader's best quote, it has the be the one that shook the world, "No, I am your father"
