    Deep dive into the 2022 Subaru BRZ 2.4L Boxer engine. This is a naturally aspirated version of the 2.4L turbo coming out of the Subaru Ascent. In this video we'll look at how it stacks up versus the previous BRZ engine, discuss why it's a good decision to keep it naturally aspirated, look at the torque curve, discuss wheel torque, and look into Toyota's D-4S direct plus port injection fuel system, as well as the advantages of such system.

    "Running counter to the current trend of power over precision, the 2022 Subaru BRZ focuses on simplicity and fun. Designed to deliver an unmatched driving experience, the all-new BRZ features a new and more powerful 228 horsepower 2.4-liter horizontally opposed engine. Sitting low in the chassis, the Subaru BOXER’s unique design allows the BRZ to achieve a Center of Gravity (CoG) even lower than the previous BRZ and on par with exotic hyper-cars. The ultra-low CoG is critical to delivering unrivaled handling, with a low polar moment and quick reaction to driver inputs. The 2.4-liter naturally aspirated engine redlines at 7,000 RPM and delivers a 15-percent increase in torque. The 2022 BRZ will be offered in both Premium and Limited trims and is available with two transmission choices; a standard six-speed manual or an available six-speed automatic with a new Sport mode designed for more aggressive driving. The new Sport mode allows for more rapid downshifts with automatic throttle blipping and utilizes yaw sensors to hold the transmission in a lower gear during hard cornering to maximize performance.
    Despite its sporting intentions, the 2022 Subaru BRZ does not sacrifice everyday comfort and practicality. The 2+2 seating and folding rear seats create a useful cargo area that has space for carrying a mountain bike, golf clubs, or even four race tires and tools for track days. Utilizing aluminum for the roof, front fenders and hood, the 2022 Subaru BRZ has an estimated curb weight of just under 2,900 lbs., delivering on its promise of accessible performance.
    The BRZ’s bold new styling is as impressive as its handling prowess. The overall impression is modern, agile and powerful, with focused and functional aerodynamic details. The tidy coupe design is just over an inch longer and almost half an inch lower than its predecessor, resulting in a low and wide frontal area set off by large functional air intakes. The grille is set low and is capped by proud fender arches that allow just enough room for suspension points. A narrowed greenhouse accentuates the bold fender flares and the roofline features a subtle “double bubble” appearance, a nod to vintage racing cars.
    The aggressive design flows into bold front fenders with a large side vent. The functional side vent reduces drag by ducting air from under the hood and fenders. The released air is directed to a side sill spoiler that creates downforce at speed. A small fin at the back of the rear-wheel arch also assists in airflow adding stability at speed. At the rear of the car, the large rear fenders and wider track flow into dual exhausts for a low and wide stance. This visual heft is lightened by a narrower greenhouse and rear hatch which flow into a dramatic upturned “ducktail” rear spoiler."

      Genuinely amazing! I'd love to meet him some day. I've had a few e-mail correspondences with Koenigsegg and they've always been very supportive and helpful - something that sounds simple but is often rare to find when trying to get info out of automakers. They make some really fascinating machines!

      @@EngineeringExplained I helped at a car meet in Gstaad in Switzerland, and there were many, many famous car people (Shmee, Mr Pagani...) and Christian and his wife (and some Koenigsegg engineers) were the only ones talking to us, but he did nit have too much time, and someone asked about technical stuff about the jesko transmission and he told us to watch your videos....

      Oof. My EJ257 has been good, only mod has been the "crappy gas" version of the Cobb flash that removes the torque dip.
      (Unlike the BRZ where the torque dip is maybe emissions, it's almost certainly emissions on the STi. The AFR gets super weird stock at exactly 2500 RPM).

      @@evilspoons My EJ255 was stock and after babying the car for only 20K miles of ownership and regular oil changes and maintenance, it threw a bearing at 70K miles because the oil pickup broke and caused a lack of oil pressure lmaooo. I hate Subaru sometimes.
      But I’ve heard a lot of similar things from tuners as well, and I see a lot of fellow Subaru owners with fluctuating AFRs in the 2000-2500 RPM range (right before boost kicks in) when not tuned. Accessports are well worth the money to get a more stable tune and to keep the engine in check.

      @@geoffbordeaux8286 Superchargers are not better unless you mostly want power above 5500rpms to redline. The turbos have a broader torque curve and I would know because I've been boosted reliably since July 4th 2017 with 300whp/255wtq, 12psi on 93 octane.

      @@subnegro4946 Positive displacement superchargers are known for their low-end torque, big fat torque curves, and area under the torque curve. Are you perhaps thinking of a centrifugal supercharger? Also, larger turbochargers are very peaky in their torque curve not offering much low-end torque. Am I missing something?

      @@todddouglass870 superchargers have there place among bigger engines like V8's or larger but the FA20 supercharged vs a FA20 turbocharged with similar power levels it favors the turbocharged variant. I understand that PD superchargers have more torque than the centrifugal crap ones but the downside is the PD superchargers are massively heavier and increases the center of gravity along with a worse F/R balance. For instance my turbo kit was 50lbs but required the removal of 26lbs of parts so it added 24lbs. An Edelbrock weighs 110-120 lbs and requires on the removal of the intake box which is 6 lbs. The car is known for balance and CoG benefits but with the turbo you can at least be as close as possible to the stock balance. Superchargers only make sense on muscle car type motors IMHO!

      While I'm a huge sucker for turbos and haven't had a NA car for a long while, it's cool to see em putting out this gem. I never got around to drive it but it looks great and it seems a really cool toy to toss around the mountains.

      Turbos just seem like they've turned into the cheat code of the automotive world. Want to win? Slap a turbo on it! No argument how much fun they can be, but in the end, you're still "cheating" (I know, not a perfect analogy, but hey...). Something so much more intoxicating about raw, high revving power and the engagement and strategy between man and machine when you know you don't just have gobs of torque at your disposal at any rpm

That car retails for the same price and it comes with dual zone climate control snow setting for its traction control a better radio and it was 4,000 cheaper.....       It doesn't need a turbo. I don't need a big mac either but I ate one today. If it's your car turbo it all you want. I've just remembered, how many people turbo'd the S2000? That was supposed to be a similar point of contention back in the day

      @@20thcenturygamer22 the s2000 is a much better car even though it was built 20 years ago. My 2000 subaru outback has the same horsepower as a current crosstrek. Subaru literally makes their cars slower over time. Despite what most want. Damn my old 98 eagle tsi would destroy this car with boost turned up and a couple of bolt ons. On that note i would take an s2000 any day over a BRZ and turbo it. rice don't care about function.

      @@BigfootUnibrowMan the ones that are *way* more powerful (V8s) are also a good bit more expensive. the cheaper 4cyl turbos have a different character (slower throttle response) and also i'd say are generally bigger and heavier. i'd rather have my smaller, albeit slower car that i'll probably do an E85 tune on at some point and get an additional 50whp

      @@markadcock8415 An ecoboost mustang will still mop the floor with this thing on a road course or at a stop light/drag strip... and has better power to weight ratio. You're not gonna get 50hp out of a 2 liter naturally aspirated motor by switching to e85... A turbo motor, by all means though.

    This would be slightly contrary to subaru's lineage, but a supercharger might be cool as an OPTION on the next BRZ. That way, you dont have turbo lag, but an overall higher power output. But I am glad they kept the naturally aspirated engine on this model

      As you say, superchargers are the best of both worlds. This is ultimately what I plan to do with my '18 BRZ. It's still under warranty now though, so for the moment I wait. I save. I look at aftermarket kits. I drool a bit, then go back to work.

      @@mresab1997 I had it on the car from 2015 to 2020. Super reliable. On e85 it made 300whp. Very linear power. Great on track. I dont have any first hand knowledge of the edlebrock but it looks like a nice unit. Probably makes more low end torque than the vortech.

      @@marcuspacheco3815Cars are not all about street racing. Try taking a tight corner in a mustang without braking and see if the car stays in one piece. The BRZ/86 has its own strengths and weaknesses.

    Great video and all but what I really want to know is how this new engine (FA24) compares to the old one (FA20) in terms of reliability and the physical differences between them (like if any new parts are installed or any parts are changed/improved on).
    Please keep in mind that the 2017-2020 MYs had a lot of changes compared to the 2013-2016 MYs so maybe include those changes too?
    I would greatly appreciate it!

      They added like 20 horsepower. It still needs a turbo. This is trash. 300hp would be fun and it's not hard to achieve. Subaru seems like the next car company to die. s2000 engine was leaps and bounds ahead of this trash.

    With the 1st gen torque dip, I always thought that the engineers intentionally put it there to sort of emulate VTEC for lack of a better way to put it. Or a lot of times when exciting a corner, your rpms would be at about 3500 or above. So then you just have linear torque output from that point forward

    I love your vids, so clear how you deliver all the info! Suggestion for a future vid: Can you maybe explain a bit more in depth why the heavier powerful cars, like the Dodge Charger/Challenger Scat Pack, Camaro SS etc, have so much difficulty getting traction off the line and why some of those cars have more of a throw back in the seat then others. Maybe tie in how that can be lessened using different tire compounds/widths. Keep it going!

    I'm actually excited for this engine. I never got a BRZ/86 primarily because I felt it's underpowered and didn't wanna go the route of turbocharging it. But I'm sure this 2.4 with header, exhaust, intake and a tune may actually feel properly quick.

So while it's true the mustang will obliterate a BRZ in a straight line it'll also trounce it in the corners. 🤦 Needs the WRX engine for the money and to get decent performance. For what they're asking for the car it's an embarrassment.

    Honestly, I'm so grateful they're still producing and updating this platform. Small, affordable sports cars are never money-makers and fast becoming extinct. As long as the powertrain is responsive and fun to rev out, I think It'll be a great time. How a sports car feels when you're ripping it is more important than the numbers. My Miata taught me this over the course of driving lots of other high power vehicles.

    Personally, a 22% bump in torque would be fantastic. That would definitely make a big difference in how fast the car "feels". Besides that we all know owners are going to be chasing that 32hp with mods that they could have had from the factory. I love small light sports cars, but I don't think you could help feeling bad when you get gapped at the lights by an 8 year old speed 3 or wrx.

One Item to note, as others have mentioned in comments, I believe the Port and Direct injectors' color coding needs to be swapped on the Intake and Cylinder locations to be accurate.

      TBH this was my mentality. NA from the factory is good because people that want NA get it, people that want turbos can get one put in, yeah they have to pay for it but they would have had to pay more anyway and then anyone that wants to supercharge it also gets their way. Plus if they put a turbo from the factory people are either going to rip it out for a different turbo or modify it all anyway

      Subaru and Toyota know aftermarket will handle forced induction. They give you the lego set, you build on it.

      The only problem is if you want a factory warranty on a turbo, you're out of luck.
      It's either NA with < 230 HP and a warranty, or FI pushing 300 HP and catch as catch can for quality.

      @@Thefrostedslime my '18 is zippy. Just not fast. I don't think the gen 2 will improve straight line speed a hell of a lot. It might give better acceleration between 3-5k RPM though, and that would be something.

      Thats a lot of compresion. In turbo aplications they will need low comp pistons so will be a expensive engine to put turbo. But...really needs turbo? I think the power and torqie in the gr86 is just perfect

      @@MElekiaZ I agree! I've got a set of headers in mine to smooth out the torque curve. It's so fun and linear now that I honestly cant imagine putting a turbo in it.

    20% more force is the minimum! At every other RPM than 3700 the torque is even lower (30 mph) for the 2022 BRZ, while the torque of the Ascent is mostly constant

      This is why it’s hard to make a sporty NA 4-banger. Even if it gets more power, it doesn’t come on until higher in the revs while turbos make power in the low to midrange.

      He's also totally ignoring that the ascent is tuned for efficiency and low-end torque, not power. The WRX STI will probably have an FA24DIT just like the Ascent, but it will probably make 350hp.

      The torque delivery on the ND2 is very linear. Just slap on a supercharger and tune the car?

      ...and so is the price...it would probably be over $40K easily if it was Turbo. They're going to be plenty of turbo kits available for this car in the near future, so who cares.

      ​@@lordoftherims436 Yep, same thing that stops people with the current gen BRZ/86. Hopefully this generation the turbo versions of the FA24 will be a viable swap, so all the crashed WRXs can become BRZ engine donors.

      Weight is basically the same, yet more power and torque. Folks that like the first-gen BRZ will likely quite enjoy this one!

      @@EngineeringExplained Having the first gen BRZ with a header, tune and E85 that brought my car up to right around the 250HP mark (at the crank) the new BRZ should feel great. The setup on mine is 204 HP/ 160 TQ at the wheels. Brings the car from the factory 6.3 0-60 time to a 5.5 second time, and eliminated the torque dip. Very happy with the setup.

    Holy crap I remember seeing this video a year ago and now I have the new gr86 and its everything this guy says. When you start the car you can feel/hear the engine flipping through the fuel injection modes. I havent dynod mine but youtubers have seen 215 wheel horsepower stock meaning the engine most likely makes closer to 240 crank hp(and they downplayed numbers), making the first point comparing it to the turbod engine better. So glad I came across this again.

    As a WRX owner: The 50% throttle is a tune issue with the stock tune- any reflash fixes it and makes the throttle-accel pretty linear for the low RPM spool into fairly high boost numbers

      I HATE the 50% throttle issue. But the CVT can't handle more power (like the pistons) so I'm not risking a burned up transmission (or dead motor) with a tune.

      @@ittimjones Yikes dude. You should trade it in for a manual. CVT's are garbage. My mom had to have the CVT in her 2013 Nissan Pathfinder replaced twice under warranty - within 50k miles of each other. After getting the 3rd replacement, she traded up for a 2019 Armada with a true automatic.
