I think just v7 forward have the fancy heads. I have EJ207 v6 in my wagon and I am pretty sure they have fixed timing (less complicated ECU work for a swap).
Most of the EJ engines in the WRX and STI are semi-closed deck blocks... Only a select few early ones had actual closed deck blocks. Also, AVCS until 2008 was only on the intake cam, from 2008 onwards in the EJ257, it has been dual AVCS. Makes a massive difference... You are on point about the thicker cylinder walls, though.
@@VeliRajasaar Yes there were a few fully closed deck blocks but I believe those were race only motors and I thought all of them were given to Prodrive for the WRC championship. There is a company called subi performance in Deutschland who will convert open deck blocks into semi-closed or fully closed deck
You forgot to mention port injection also helps keeping your intake valves clean, on the other hand direct injection doesn't, but yeah it is way better overall than port injection, especially if your aim is power and efficiency. Get your catch cans ready...

Thank you for crediting us in your video @DonutMedia We're glad we could provide helpful content that adds to the enthusiasm of car fanatics everywhere!
I just hopped on to this series this episode, and this style is so good for new car people or people that don’t know some stuff. If someone didn’t understand the engine codes for some cars, they’d have to look everything up themselves, but in this series, it’s explained to the basics and then brings the main topic, and I love it!
I recently picked up a 2023 wrx and couldn't be happier. The engine is more durable, stronger and most importantly, more powerful. Specially can handle a bit more tuning from stock then the ej.
New wrx has shown to consistently do 350whp with an intake and a protune (conservatively). And MUCH more with an e85 tune (which the stock fuel system can take) .. there is your “sti”
There are reasons why that old engine became an icon, so there are more things to ask for, like the rumble sound for starters, a great manual transmission, in a way to keep the tradition of the brand that kept people fascinated with the STI for so many years.
It will still have a boxer sound, trust me. I've done equal-length headers on EJ25 blocks and they definitely don't sound close to a Honda. It's like the Subie rumble without the question of "is that a misfire?". Also cylinder 4 says thank you with ELHs... UELs makes Cylinder 4 get significantly hotter than the other cylinders, and makes it harder for it to get rid of the exhaust gasses. Making it harder to spin the turbskie. Turbskie not spinning as quickly means LESS powa babeh. And no one likes gimped horses. We want them buff horses. Go ELHs if you're making more than stock power, especially.
@ The Darkness, you can still get the rumble with the current generation, that’s what I did I have a 2016 STI that I’m keeping for life. Eventually I will also get the new STI, so you can have the best of both worlds.
It's like Mazda has done with their entire fleet in recent years. They all use the same 4 cyl engine, some are 2.0l others are 2.5l, they have different tunes + turbo according to the job they're supposed to do, and engine placement in the bay (some are facing sideways, others are forward) and that's how they get different power.
Most of nowadays engines are built this way, that's why an ECU remap is so effective, sometimes the only difference between two models is the electronic configuration.
That’s what Subaru used to do. The problem is engines that are made to do everything usually don’t do any one thing particularly well. The EJ is a great example of that. There’s also a reason you don’t find aftermarket turbo kits for current Mazda engines, and there aren’t a lot of bolt ons for the current Miata: the engines aren’t made to handle that.
I'll be honest, at first I thought you weren't going to make a good host but the more I watch you the more you own this show. Great vid Jeremiah, looking forward to next week :)
The USA doesn't have a STI for 2022, just the 2.4 in the WRX with 271hp 258 lb ft. The ascent has a 260 hp and 277lb ft. NO STI, the new rumor is an electric STI
@@That-guy0801 yes they are but the guy just said they might do direct or ported injection, maybe both just like the brz. I'd say do direct because its efficient but less durability on it
Donut, please, PLEASE give mad props to the person who makes the animations. All those little details make the videos even better. Also, Jeremiah is a cool cat! I really enjoy him as a presenter. 😎👍
I really hope they somehow find a way to keep UEL headers for the new STI's, because that sweet subie rumble is the best car sound to ever exist imo. There's no other sound like it. If the new ones don't have it, I'll stick to old ones.
Direct Injection has also bad side , at cold temperatures the gaz can by-pass the piston rings and drop into the oil pan, mixing Oil / Gaz for oil dilution. This was a MAJOR issue in Honda's GDI "Earth Dreams"
I'm glad I subscribed to your guys' channel now, not only do I understand why the new Subaru STI motor is better than its predecessor, I also have a much better understanding on how a motor works in general. Props to you guys at Donut!!!
Subaru has failed to create a "phenom". They are quite literally a labor of love. Massive engine failure isn't unheard of on any of their platforms, from spun bearings, to broken pistons and bent rods. I wouldn't expect some engineering marvel from them out of this.
Literally every manufacture has this issue. The reason its front and center for Subaru is because of its following - you have a bunch of people moding and beating the shit out of these motors, whats Do you expect? Head on over to ANY performance forum and you will see the same issues. Its not JUST Subaru.. You want a bullet proof motor then build one, no mass production motor is going to be flawless with failures..
@@jmhm17 I've owned a lot of performance vehicles in my day, and in large they are basket cases compared to a commuter. However Subaru is a special kind of awful. I've owned multiple and have first hand experience with them failing. My first failure was on an sti that I did beat the brakes off of with track days and general hooligan bullshit. After I sent it away to be built I got my 2011 wrx. It was failure 2. I went 7k miles before bearing failure. No beating, all commute, properly maintained and cared for. It went for 100k post engine replacement. My final failure was my 2016 sti. Again engine ending failure. Lost piston 4 pulling on to the highway at 4k. Not flat foot, but not going easy. Totally stock, repaired under warranty and sold. I still have the 06 sti and I'm still going to buy a new one most likely. It's important to know, the engines have had serious design flaws from the get go. The fucking rods on the fa20f being made of plastic is a shit show. The older 5 speeds being made of glass were also a major issue even at stock power. Running issue with oil pickups cracking and shit baffle designs. There are very few vehicles that have had the failures like Subaru and maintained the fan base. Then when Subaru starts correcting issues that cause failures like adding equal length headers to help equalizer exhaust scavenging and cylinder temps and everyone goes apeshit because it doesn't sound however.
Subaru board of directors: We need to refresh the STI line with a new design, but how? The car has maintained it's shape sine the 1st gen, we need something new!! Subaru chassis designer: *COUGH* Honda civic type r *COUGH*
I think you're HP quotes are a little off. You specified 400 to the wheels and said it's 90 more than the current STI but the factory power isn't measured at the wheels. I think stock STIs are more in the 270 range at the wheels stock.
You didn’t say the biggest downside to DFI (direct fuel injection), the fuel won’t be cleaning the intake manifold anymore which means you will have to walnut blast these engine around 70k-90k miles. kinda expensive process
The port injector is used to clean oil and carbon off the valve on startup. It's to avoid dropping a valve from carbon build up. It also lets you avoid incredibly expensive periodic maintenance for walnut blasting or fuel treatments. We get to have the advantage of adding cheap port injectors for performance applications instead of expensive direct injectors, but it's originally for reliability.
@3:45 I'm sure what you meant to say was "intake runners" here, before describing exactly what the word "runner" is describing in that context. To be a total tool, I'll add this: @5:25... decidedly *not* literal. I don't mean this to be rude, I just prefer clear communication, and I want my favorite automotive TH-cam channel to be the best it can be. Love you guys!
Stoked about my next WRX with an FA engine. One mod I will have to do for sure is putting the unequal headers back on to get that same rumble my 2012 has.

Vtec is variable valve timing and variable valve lift. While AVCS is just just valve timing.
@@justinranes3351 that's ivtec
@@VeliRajasaar Yes there were a few fully closed deck blocks but I believe those were race only motors and I thought all of them were given to Prodrive for the WRC championship. There is a company called subi performance in Deutschland who will convert open deck blocks into semi-closed or fully closed deck
This guy is so good at keeping my attention I didn’t even realize I hadn’t skipped the keeps commercial till it was over lol
You forgot to mention port injection also helps keeping your intake valves clean, on the other hand direct injection doesn't, but yeah it is way better overall than port injection, especially if your aim is power and efficiency. Get your catch cans ready...
Sooo they gonna put this engine in the BRZ? Or they gonna still try and find a way to justify charging the same amount for a BRZ as the WRX
I’d buy a BRZ with this engine in it - Jeremiah
Different chassis, different purpose
If you don’t already understand the core values of cars like the BRZ, no amount of explaining we do will help, so feel free to stop asking. You’ve made up your mind that the WRX is better, but I don’t think it’s too much to ask that people just appreciate all the cars we have to choose from before they go away. Pizza’s an excellent and extremely versatile food, but so is a Stromboli.
Current rumors are they will put this engine in the new BRZ sans the turbo. If it proves true, the hate will be tremendous.
That last engine they put in the BRZ😬

Hello from 2022 where the New WRX has been released and the STi cancelled
the length of the timing chain in that engine gives me anxiety
It's very tin, it's going to stretch
Well at least it's an engine that wont blow by 3k miles, I have 3 different friends that have had an engine blow before 8k miles. Subaru finally got their shit together I'm excited!
@@wlteemo2734 They do proper break in? Drove it somewhat normal?
It’s two chains. One chain for one head another for the other head.
@@justinranes3351 TWO CHAINZZZZ!!
500hp crosstrek, goals. but this has made me excited about getting a new STI in two-three years
getting passed on the highway by an 500hp crosstrek would be an experience.
Meaning I’d like to see it run not a glance at it for a few seconds like we got here lol
As much as i love this episode, long live the EJ!!!!
Picked up a 2022 WRX 2 months ago and after seeing this video I love my car even more
Dude, the term "edutainment" was invented with you in mind. Never saw anything near as informative and easy to digest like this (and many other of your videos)... huge kudos!

Day ♾️ of asking for what everyone is asking for aka: up to speed on your cars.🙂
#BringScienceGarageBack
Maybe with Jeremiah or however it's spelled
Bart was cool
I love Bart but its time to move on. 😥
Welp, Jerewhoever is kinda doing the same thing but I'd like to see him do it more as Bart did
J Z you’re comment is the sad truth
This show has really evolved with jeremiah...I loved it before and I love it more now😃😃
My favorite 4 banger is the V4 from the Porsche 919
Mine is the V4 from the Lancia Fulvia. :)
New wrx has shown to consistently do 350whp with an intake and a protune (conservatively). And MUCH more with an e85 tune (which the stock fuel system can take) .. there is your “sti”
I Have one. Can confirm the engine is incredible.
There are reasons why that old engine became an icon, so there are more things to ask for, like the rumble sound for starters, a great manual transmission, in a way to keep the tradition of the brand that kept people fascinated with the STI for so many years.
3:07 - wait, no subie rumble?
No está bien
I love subie rumble as much as any other subie bro, but for 400 buff horses straight out of the box ill forget about it real quick
They still have a little bit probably. But that rumble is pretty inefficient.
Vladimir72 I felt that, but it’s not the same 😪
@ The Darkness, you can still get the rumble with the current generation, that’s what I did I have a 2016 STI that I’m keeping for life. Eventually I will also get the new STI, so you can have the best of both worlds.
I feel like after watching these B2B episodes I could go take the final exam of an mechanical engineering class and nail it.
It’s great to see Tom DeLonge (ex Blink 182) doing stuff again. Keep it up mate.
Currently watching this in my 23 WRX sad there is no STI.
Anyone else really want that sleeper crosstrek 👀🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Also a sleeper Impreza...
That would be awesome :)
Not with the crappy CVT.
I have a feeling deposits forming at the valves. Since there’s no fuel to clean the valves.
Its really not hard to do a valve service every 50k miles.
I suspect the new fa24 will be a dual injection system thus cleaning the back sides of the intake valves and cooling the air charge
They've already got it in the fa20 naturally acid aspirated BRZ engines it would not be a challenge to Port over to the fa24
@@Hallowsaw why should we pay money to fix faulty technology?
Reni N it’s maintenance 😐 part of the cost of ownership
Finally remembered who the host reminds me of. It is the singer of blink 128 lol.
Doesn't direct injection without port injection also tend to mess up valve seats as well after prolonged use?
Walnut blast every 30k miles. And an AOS. Problem solved.
@@subie-ja8083 port and polish while the motor is out.
Oh boy, the good old days when we thought we were getting an STI...
We still got the engine at least
That power is not "to the wheels" it's engine output. The 2022 will be close to 400 output, probably more like 330 to the wheels
Which is still amazing for a factory whp number
@@patio6 yeah
Not only the dual fuel injection system is good for cold starts but it also helps to reduce carbon build up on the intake valve.
I haven't drove a turbocharged Subaru but my wife's 2019 Outback has a 3.6R flat 6 and I luv that motor.
Are people actually mad about this evolution? It's still a flat four. Still has character.
I'd say it's an upgrade but I hope they put bigger cams tho if they want to make more power for the sti
Janrey Siano sti heads r ported

I’m so excited to see what the Sti comes out with
Subaru has failed to create a "phenom".
Jmhm17 nah there’s plenty of motors that are virtually bulletproof from the factory, especially when compared to Subaru’s engines
Don't forget the head gaskets lol
daniel meza never ever forgot the head gaskets
Great, clear graphics. Thanks for including!
i love the way you guys broke this down and made it educational instead of just stating the facts
Great presentation. I really love my EJ engine (and the tone), but totally open to advancements that can provide reliable higher output.
Pretty sure he meant 400hp to the flywheel
Great episode though!
Thats what I was thinking, 400 to the wheels would be great but I doubt thats what they will do.
Subaru board of directors: We need to refresh the STI line with a new design, but how? The car has maintained it's shape sine the 1st gen, we need something new!!
Subaru chassis designer: *COUGH* Honda civic type r *COUGH*
lmao. Let the type R be crazy but there's something about simplicity that's attractive. STI and EVO X were hitting that spot for me.
type r looks too much like something you get out of a happy meal.
See for me that's the type r charm, if it doesn't look like it will turn into a decepticon don't want it.
I think you're HP quotes are a little off. You specified 400 to the wheels and said it's 90 more than the current STI but the factory power isn't measured at the wheels. I think stock STIs are more in the 270 range at the wheels stock.
Ture. Except in 2019 they modified the ej257. Many people report dynoing stock sti's at a little less than 300whp.
You missed the point- it keeps the valves clean from egr startup gunk. Love it!
Here 4 years later as an owner of a new Ascent waiting for the STI still 😅
You didn’t say the biggest downside to DFI (direct fuel injection), the fuel won’t be cleaning the intake manifold anymore which means you will have to walnut blast these engine around 70k-90k miles. kinda expensive process
400 bucks.......
Derek Robertson Probably more then $400 for a brand new horizontally opposed boxer but idk
and what cause the dirt?
Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve.... and a little the oil gas from the motor itself.
"Hang on....That, is the sound of a turbocharged flat 4 engine. A sound, which all over the world, heralds the imminent arrival of a moron."

You can't tell the difference between the sound of a 2015+ wrx and any 4pot because Subaru finally got rid of the unequal length headers.
It looks like you Hammond all surprised, A Tree!! A house!!! A rock!!
User Name 🙄🙄 false
The port injector is used to clean oil and carbon off the valve on startup. It's to avoid dropping a valve from carbon build up. It also lets you avoid incredibly expensive periodic maintenance for walnut blasting or fuel treatments. We get to have the advantage of adding cheap port injectors for performance applications instead of expensive direct injectors, but it's originally for reliability.
@3:45 I'm sure what you meant to say was "intake runners" here, before describing exactly what the word "runner" is describing in that context.
To be a total tool, I'll add this: @5:25... decidedly *not* literal.

@11:03 i thought he was going to really go get that drip thing for the honey. Much sadness ):
great video, sad subaru let us down.
I thought direct injection had carbon build up problems since the gas doesnt have a chance to clean the valves properly
Which is why dual injection is the best of both worlds. A lot of auto manufacturers are doing this. I just hope Subaru notices this
