Mortal Kombat 2021 is finally here, so here's my review. Hunted by the fearsome warrior Sub-Zero, MMA fighter Cole Young finds sanctuary at the temple of Lord Raiden. Training with experienced fighters Liu Kang, Kung Lao and the rogue mercenary Kano, Cole prepares to stand with Earth's greatest champions to take on the enemies from Outworld in a high-stakes battle for the universe. This was released in theaters and on HBO Max, where I watched it.

@Brian Babin yes but what if you are moving forward? You have to know exactly when the attack will hit just to know when to back away to block.
This was easily my favorite part as well I couldn't stop laughing.
Its exactly what a player in game does to inexperienced players and its one of the most frustrating things to happen in fighting games

@Brian Babin I grew up with both MK and SF. Having a block button's really not as big a deal as people make it out to be.

Yep! It wasn’t horrible but I was definitely disappointed. I think they’re supposed to make like 2 or 3 more movies. I’m not sure why they just didn’t do a 1 season like 8 episode deal.
I had super huge problems with it should have been a Netflix series would be better
Eddie Tobias Easter egg was cool. A nod to the creators is always a class act.
Like the East Warehouse on Lairdman in the original TMNT movie.
Also, during the Sub-Zero vs Jax fight they had one of Sub-Zero's moves on the back graffiti and the many posters of Sonya's wall and Raiden's temple had other MK characters like Great Kung Lao, Goro, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Nightwolf, Kotal Kahn, Argus and Delia. Also some trinkets in Raiden's Temple were Shinnok's Amulet(which Kano tried to steal) and Kitana's fans.

So many characters, and they feel the need to introduce a new one and leave Johnny Cage out. Also, Cole develops LITERAL plot armor.

Facts. Kung Lao was my main in MK2 and one of my favorite overall in the series. His character was one of the highlights of this film.

I was starting to get that vibe too and was really worried. Glad they didn't go that route.
Funny, I thought the SAME thing for a moment there. Like the spirit of Hanzo was going to possess his body and 'transform' him into Scorpion to fight Sub-Zero. I too am glad that they didn't go that route.

This movie actually made me appreciate the 1995 film way more.
The ‘95 movie was cheesy but endearing. This was cheesy but just bad.

I was kinda disappointed they just made him a monster rather than a character.

They should have our heroes being attacked by an invisible enemy early on and let the audience guess what's going on. Only to reveal that it was reptile at the end. Would've been cooler that way.

My one big thing that bothers me is when Jax is driving to get away from Sub-Zero. He made 3 right turns!!! Where did that bring him? Right back to Sub-Zero!

Kano’s response is the same exact reaction that I had to Liu Kang’s portrayal in this film. The Liu Kang from the 95 version was way better.
It was odd how jax got his arms from monks and they super sized on their own.
Those monks actually graduated from MIT.
It was supposed to be him "finding his arcana" I took it as they're playing his powers as some kind of technomancer. He's always shot energy beams and heated them up so they can play into it that way. So while it wasn't necessary to change his backstory it fits with this universe

Shang Tsung actually says 'Finish Them' when his fighters confront the heroes.

Shang Tsung did say “Finish Them” once but that’s about as close as it got to the iconic “Finish Him” quote
It's worth noting he was the announcer in MK1, not Shao Khan, so it works.

Edit: The Pit without an upper cut into spikes is a bit disappointing, but that can be saved for a sequel. Can't deny Jax a badass clap fatality.

I’m so glad someone else noticed it! Here’s the thing: IT WASNT KANO. It just randomly comes out from nowhere. In surround it comes from the far rear right - where Kano is visible in the center of the screen - lips not moving. I think it’s the closest nod to “Toasty!”
I also loved that the birthmark is the Pepsi logo.

I absolutely loved the showdown between Scorpion and SubZero. How they developed Hanzo's backstory was a really nice touch. The actor did the character justice.
That's about the only character that had a meaningful story arc. Everything else was emotionless and fell flat
Trust me James, the sound thing isn’t just your system. I’ve seen no end of movies where I can barely hear the actors mumbling their lines and then a huge sound effect nearly deafens me. Don’t know why it’s suddenly become an issue, but I’ve also taken to having the subtitles on all the time so that I can follow the plot without messing with the volume every 2 seconds.
It seems to be a recurring issue with cinema films only. The talking should be loud and the sound effects and music quiet.
11 years old, bought a ticket for the Rocketeer, saw Boyz in the Hood, forgot what ticket we bought when we saw New Jack City, but same idea. That is how to get into R movies as a youth.
I bought a Cloverfield ticket for Rambo 4. Forgot what ticket I bought for Pineapple Express.
Sadly you can't do this anymore because of assigned seating in most theatres now.

Sometimes that works. When I was younger, they would sometimes have ushers checking tickets for rated R movies right outside the actual auditorium, so no walking into random theaters.

It Still can happen. It seems like everything nowadays gets a show.
We already have that. Warner actually produced a web series called Mortal Kombat Legacy. There's 2 seasons of shorts. The production value is amazing (maybe one of the most expensive web series ever created) and actually atracted so much audience that influenced Warner to this new film with a bigger budget. Saddly was cancelled (maybe due to avoid confusion or self competence with the movie) but You still can watch both seasons in TH-cam.
That's basically what it looks like. A cheap B movie.

Nothing will beat seeing the original as a 12 year old kid who was obsessed with MK at the time, especially after being let down by the Street Fighter movie the year before.
I think this one is better in terms of actually being a true MK game adaptation.

They did not need to invent a whole new character to introduce the audience to MK. It's literally a self insert Mary Sue character because the director literally said in an interview he based Cole off his early life

I thought it was simply OK. The movie grinds to a stop once they reach Raiden's temple. Sub Zero, Scorpion, and Kano were the highlights.
I wish there was a sub series of films where Dr Loomis got to kick back and casually review some movies “when I’m not doing my darndest to chase down one specific escaped mental patient, I like watching movies. I’m glad you can all join me as we revisit Mortal Kombat The Movie”

The scene with Kabal and Kano talking through the force field to each other was just perfect. It felt menacing and just, cool. I think it was the cinematography honestly.

I HATE it.
Loudness equalization can counteract this a little, but I have my finger on the mouse wheel at all times, for those extreme volume spikes. I remember when watching Kong vs Godzilla, the heavy-dialogue scenes were mostly "whispers" too, on top of everything else.
and this goes back more than 10 years btw.

"Death is only another portal." - Shang Tsung. My guess is that these characters will return in the sequel. There's no way they would do another one with over half the characters remaining dead. Overall, I enjoyed this movie. It's not a master piece, but it delivered on what I wanted. Lots of gory and fun action.
Over half the characters dead? There were like 4 deaths...you do realize that the mk roster is like 50+ characters, right?
@@andrewhunter9119 I'm well aware there are way more characters. I was commenting on what James said in his video. At 9:44 He wondered how a sequel would work with, "more than half the characters finished off." I'm sure he just meant the film. Hence why I said they are coming back.

I saw the original MK when I was 18. I could have seen a R version. I loved the cheesy acting and Christopher Lambert as Raiden. It was a fun movie. It didn't need broken spines and F-bombs.

What I wish to happen in the sequel is for Quan Chi to appear and resurrect all the fallen fighters and have them under his spell... and for Cole to have a personality.

Dude, I felt that. I also watched AVGN back @ GT and was still in Middle School. So when James said he was 40 I was like, “Hold up, HES FOURTY?!”.. then realized I’m nearly 30 myself.. feel like as I’m getting older time is also going by a LOT faster..
I relate so much when you said the 1995 MK movie, in theaters, was one of the best movie experiences. It truly was. I remember it being the LOUDEST movie I've ever seen in my life. Unforgettable.
I love this new one despite its flaws.
Kung Lao had an excellent intro. I want to enter a room that way.
I have very few gripes with this movie and was blown away by how amazing I found it. The gore was there, the badass fighting, the humor, the cheesyness - it's all in there. Probably my biggest gripe is that Goro was killed by Cole, and he's the least interesting character (and everyone seems to agree).
The director said that he intends on putting Johnny Cage in the second Mortal Kombat movie, hes also supposed to get a standalone movie, he stated that he didn't want a white male lead in a movie about kung fu 🙄🙄...

Kabal sounds a bit like Duke Nukem. Both what he says AND how he says it. And I love it!
If you replace Raiden with Zordon, and MK tattoos with Morphers, it's basically the newer Power Rangers movie with gore and swearing. A group of would-be heroes need to learn how to come together and use their powers to prevent an invasion. I liked it, but it just felt like a place holder for MK 2 where, hopefully, they will get to the tournament.

What they should have done is a miniseries of 10 episodes. Each episode introduces a character and ties his/her story in with the universe. Then do the final episode or two with them all coming together in a tournament

The art of "sneaking" into an R-rated movie as a sub-17-year-old is exceedingly simple. Just buy a ticket to a movie you're allowed to see, and go to the R-rated movie's theater instead. They don't check your ticket when you enter the theater, only when you enter the hallway with all the theater doors off of it.
If you're old enough to make the decision to watch an R-rated movie, you're old enough to watch that movie.
Kabal and Kano were my favorite things about the movie, and the only things that would make me watch it again. Isn't it kinda sad how Goro looked a lot better in the 90's than he does now?

My high school friends and I had one big complaint about Goro in the 1995 film and that was his body was too narrow. I think trying to create a prop that was accurate to the game model was not practical so they had to make Goro a bit more slender.

I remember seeing the original in the theater with a friend of mine and my dad. The volume was up so loud but we loved it. I think we saw the 2nd in the same theater (also where we saw Ninja Turtles 2 and 3 for sure).

@@SchmergDergen trash.....no, it's wasn't a home run but wasn't a total flop either. Yes the movie was very fast paced and I wasn't a fan of it jumping in between different fight scenes at once and yes there was a huge lack of buildup behind backstories and overall the whole plot of what Mortal Kombat was supposed to be about. The biggest problem that people have with this movie and why they hate it so much is because of the fact that they don't understand that this is just the icing on the cake not the entire cake itself or in other words this is just like a chapter one of a book not the entire story itself. You have the right to think of this movie however you wish but at the end of the day there's still a lot of people who really enjoyed this film and as long as it was better than Annihilation then nobody really can't complain because all the questions empty plots are supposed to be for the next movie. I support them making more Mortal Kombat sequels after this sorry you don't feel the same
The new character and his family are so lame.
I was thoroughly unimpressed by the movie. The action and gore were the only things it had going for it. That may be enough for some people, but I could literally just watch the cutscenes from MK9 for a vastly better story and equivalent action.
There was no “finish him” but Shang Tsung said “finish them” when they all showed up to the arena in Raiden’s temple. I took that to be a nod to the classic “finish him” line.
