So Cole is literally the player in action story games. You run around, some random people yell at you to do things and you do it without question basically.
He's also the fish out of water/audience surrogate. His main purpose is to have the lore explained to him and have the plot happen to him. Like a crappy itsekai protagonist.
It's funny because the movie starts off so strong... then the moment it introduces Cole it's like a completely different writing team came in and took over, but it never fully recovers even in the end.
Totally agree, was really hoping Scorpion and Sub Zero would fight through an entire tournament just to get at each other, neither caring which side they were on, while other characters from both sides try to get them to see sense. That way you get the revenge plot, tension and give characters and their decisions weight.
Plot armor wasn't really the thing, the problem was his fighting style. He's the type who doesn't block and hopes he hits harder, which isn't the right idea for a Champion especially an old one.
Yeah really, @@HighordStarkiller. Cole's character never made sense for me either. While the fight scenes are up to so much better than the original MK movie's fight scenes most of them also made no gosh darn sense. This movie should have been called: "Mortal Kombat: Wasted Opportunity".
Hell, Hanzo/Scorpion's story was really well-done. I was actually looking forward for more of his screen time, only to find out that he's merely a walking plot device.
It starts out good Subzero shows up the fight wasn't groundbreaking but works but then we get a wooden plank as the main protagonist with plot armour and the rest is a trainwreck
The fatalities are even more of a forced in gimmick considering that they are kind of pointless from a story perspective, if the actual lore from the games (and even MK9's semi-reboot) were used Sub-Zero was like the only canon death from the actual tournament era of the games. It wasn't until the 3rd game where the tournament concept is thrown out the window as Outworld says "Screw it" and just invades that they started really killing off characters. Even then with most of those character deaths being off-screen after 2 leading into 3, and you could still count almost every rostered character with a canon death on 1 hand.
I think that's what made the Sonic movie work. They simply cared about portraying the essence of the character and create an origin for his rivalry with Eggman. There's nothing else related to the games aside from these easter eggs and some names, that's why you can watch it without feeling like you have to play the games to understand it or even enjoy it. I really wish more videogame movies decided to try this approach
For all cinematic universes, Mortal Kombat Cinematic Universe would've made the most sense. This movie should've been set in 1600s Japan, building up the rivalry between Scorpion and Subzero.
Whether it’s set in the 1600’s or not, they should have spent more time into building up the characters since their planning on having another one anyway
The Scorpion portion drove me crazy. The movie starts with this amazing concept of two ancient warriors locked in battle by revenge and kills the man that would be scorpion. Cool, I am intrigued, let's see where this goes. It then focuses on a less interesting character with a subpar actor who uses a Scorpion cheat code he didn't know he had. Such a waste.
@@tiaaaron3278 Talking from a story telling perspective. Like yeah Cole sucks but had they let him earn the mantle of scorpion and avenge the clan it would have been a better story arc overall. They could have made him scorpions reincarnation and it would have worked better. Probably also doesn't help that Cole doesn't even exist in the games so there no attachment to the character at all vs someone like scorpion
I was one of those people who criticized him for misreading the goal at the end, but I still liked the video overall, it was just a very big nitpick for me.
@@Superluigi881 not really, I rewatched the old one and when Sub Zero and Scorpion show up to attack Liu, Johnny, and Sonia before the tournament, Raiden straight up zaps them. In the old one, Raiden is the reason why Outworld can't be caught cheating. They know he can't interfere but only as long as they follow the rules. In the new one, Raiden doesnt get a slicer of respect. They dont give a single crap about cheating and killing earth's chosen ones right in front of him.
I really want someone to talk about how horrible half of the figh scenes editing was. Like these actors trained to do these fights and yet the camera cut every .5 seconds
Probably because half of the cast aren't martial artists who can actually pull that stuff off and make it look good without the help of editing? I mean there is a huge disparity in quality from fight scene to fight scene. All the Scorpion and sub zero fights were pretty great. The main character handled himself well too.
@@cynicalsassparillagaming6827 the movie was far from fine. It was devoid of logic, devoid of meaningful character moments outside of the first 7 minutes, shitty editing, and shitty pacing.
@@benjim8462 Straight to insults because someone has a different opinion to you? God forbid you act civil when encountering someone with different views to you. The movie is perfectly fine. Not amazing but was a perfectly good movie. And before you try to pull the elitism card (which i wouldn't put past you given how you have acted so far) I have been playing and have been a fan of MK since deadly alliance. The movie is not perfect and i will not pretend like it has no flaws, it does. but it is not a bad movie and is definitely not a failure by any means.
Shang Tsung in the begining of the movie: Raiden can't find out we're killing the fighters before the tournament Shang Tsung 10 minutes later in Raiden's house: You can't stop me
Fuck I thought the same thing. Like he knows they are being killed that's why he is looking for them. The movie is only worth for the fights, that even without the game context are pretty cool, specially the first one
More like... Raiden at the beginning- "Im the defender of earth, but cant interfere with the tournament itself Raiden when earth is invaded before the tournament takes place: "Yeah... Imma leave all the fighting to you guys for...reasons?
I mean, Mortal Kombatants tend to have enough superhuman strength to reliably defeat full conversion cybernetic ninjas to begin with, so his mecha-arms might not have been all that much stronger than his pre-cyborg arms. Also, I think that his arms are explicitly supposed to be part of his Arcana boost in this movie (because apparently the writers have been playing Persona, or something), so they are probably magic now, even if the rest of his body isn't as superhuman as it.
I mean, he got his arcana, which is supposed to be raw strength, not just the cyber arms. The entire purpose of starting with the weak frail looking arms is to visually represent how strong he is, until he unlocks his arcana and they fill out to visually represent how strong he has become. It's not the arms themselves that make him strong it's the arcana and the melding of man and machine.
The two major flaws for me was having the main character be someone that's not of the Mortal Kombat world and their power basically being black panthers suit. Big props for starting at the pivotal scene of Sub-Zero versus Scorpion and I really hope they lead on to Quan Chi and Shinnok being behind the attack
I dislike Coles character but I like His power because, as far as I know, There’s never been a Mortal Kombat character where the more damage you take, the harder you hit. That could be a great addition to the game meta

ironically kano being motivated by money is legit, its touched on in mk11 that when he has the power to get whatever he wants, money power whatever he comes to realize its the thrill of the chase that he loves. the rest eeehhhhhh

@@PolishGod1234 but ready player one had more creativity put into it's action scenes and references plus it looks spectacular in comparison to this film
I thought it was really weird that this movie was clearly only made for people who had played the games, but then the protagonist is a completely new character who takes the "chosen one" status away from a character that's _still in the movie,_ but now relegated to exposition dumps and training montages. So much of the movie is for die-hard fans (Nitara was in what, two games?) but then the protagonist reads like someone's fan OC who's superpower is literal plot armor.
Exactly. They are like "this movie is for the fans so we can just go over the lore quickly or none at all." But also: "we need to add an audience surrogate character for the new ppl to follow the story!" In the end, they failed to please either side properly.
And the 95 movie had not one but two decent audience surrogates. On one hand Liu Kang who left the whole thing and now has his own reasons to fight anyway, and then Johnny Cage who want's to prove that he is real but goes in over his head and justifies exposition..
I just don't get how you can have Mileena without Kitana. And not go into like...any backstory. They skipped so many steps for no context fights..and I'm sad about that.
I’m a Mileena fan but I just don’t think she belonged in this movie at all. She has a whole story line of her own and it’s weird without her even mentioning Kitana or Shao Kahn.
Yeah agreed. But I felt that way with pretty much every outworld character. Goro, Reiko, Mileena, and Nitara had no personality. Kabal was the only one who stood out I guess, but he felt super out of place among that group of warriors Shang Tsung had lol.
@@THE_BEAR_JEW And that was the problem Shang Tsung not being old for starters but also acting like he was THE big bad , even Mileena was acting like an underling when speaking to him in Outworld even tho she was always rebellious and seductive in nature
Yeah, I really don’t understand why they chose to introduce a brand new character rather than use Jax or Sonya to accidentally stumble into everything and inevitably get swallowed up in the whole of it.
Honestly, I think Sonya should have been one of the focal characters, specifically because she's the one investigating it. Heck, you could have had most of the movie be about her and Jax investigating, ultimately leading to an encounter with Kano before heading out to Raiden's temple. Jax can still lose his arms the same way he does in the movie. Simultaneously, you could also have Liu Kang, Kung Lao and Raiden on their own sub-plot, tying them into the movie better. And if you want to stick with a Cole Young-Esque character, why not bring in one of the recent, younger characters? Heck, Takeda could have been a much more interesting character to follow, given the angst his character goes through in the lore!
IE: explore its world building to even get the game elitists to acknowledge the movie's existence without bashing on it cause one character doesn't follow a certain game gimmick.
I hate it when character's do that, especially with little to no context whatsoever. Batman is a corny name on it's own, but the character behind it gives it power. The mere backstory and context of that character changes the meaning of Batman. It's not just a dude in a batsuit, it's the freakin BATMAN. Sub-zero on the other hand (In this film) just gives himself that name cause fan service.
They basically rushed through the telling of the story so they could spend the rest of the time packing the movie full of fan-boy game references, one-liners, catch phrases & inside jokes...
Cole left his family to protect them, since he is being tracked. But then he totally disregards this and goes back to them later in the movie, which leads to Goro appearing... terrible writing
Jax: You can be tracked so they'll find you. Cole: I'll leave to protect you. Also Cole: I can't do this. Raiden: Then go. Cole: Ok! Me: Your family... remember??
I watched this movie and immediately thought that Cole should have been Kenshi. He should have been a former swordman that became blind but was still chosen to be a chosen warrior. Then when he gets his power he becomes psychic and becomes a great fighter. Boom, a better story with an established character.
Cole should have not been in this movie in general. I remember many people stating why he was in the movie when you have hundreds of MK characters you could have used. The obvious choice was Johnny Cage and/or Liu Kang as the protagonist. Why wasn't the actor for Cole cast as Liu Kang?
I hate that I’m defending it but the scene where Kano gets leg sweep over and over was a homage to fans of the video game. The leg sweep was a cheat people used over and over in the game lol.
Yeah, but that's exactly what Filmento stated. Filmento stated that the leg sweep IS a homage to the games, but it makes no sense. Since the first two-fight scenes established Kano as an aggressive fighter that needs to tone down. But then, constantly getting his legs swept shows that he is too slow and casual of a fighter. It goes against what has already been established. So Filmento states that the movie was willing to sacrifice story precedent to reference the game.
@@Byronic19134 But the criticism is valid because they could have made a movie that was for the people who played the game and still made general sense and this scene is a good example. They could have both had their in-joke and still stayed true to what had been established about Kano's fighting style because the reason the leg sweep was so popular with under-skilled players and infuriated the better ones was that it was an overly effective move for its simplicity, so spamming it could counter stronger moves. So they didn't need Kano to just walk into the leg sweep each time because he's too slow or casual, they could have shown him being aggressive, rushing in and getting taken down by a sweep, then jumping up and running forward with purpose, getting taken down again, etc. They just might have needed to be a bit more creative about how the leg sweeps were done to make it work.
Can we just get a "subzero x scorpion kill the shit out of each other in medieval japan" movie? That's kind of the best part of MK for me, if I'm honest. And could be a really cool movie to stablish the basis of this universe
honestly, a prequel movie exploring the rivalry between the Shirai Ryu and the Lin Kuei would be nice, the web series Mortal Kombat Legacy did a great job with it, so i dont see why we cant have a descent movie depicting it, besides the lack of the rest of the characters, of course.
They honestly should have just went the cinematicuniverse way, since they planned to make multiple movies from the start. Begin with a big medieval Sub-Zero vs Scorpion movie Continue with a Jax / Sonya / Kano war movie Then a kung-fu movie with all the shaolin characters and THEN, you make the avengers. I mean, the mortal kombat tournament.
What the f*** are you talking about? The fights were garbage, not fit for the legacy of this franchise. It's even more disgusting when you realize the actor playing Sub-Zero was also in one of the most orgasm-inducing martial arts movies of all time, The Raid. You're so much better off watching both Raids than this POS...
What's your point? Shang Tsung says so. "There will be no Mortal Kombat." With the intent of breaking the rules and killing the heroes outside of the tournament.

Y'all ever think you're expecting way too much from mortal kombat? I don't think it was even intended to be taken as that serious of a film...I don't sit through a f&f movie and think to myself "you know, they haven't earned enough emotion in this explosion scene, not enough weight behind it" or "why are they racing a sub? Just like I don't care how logical it is to see jax fight sub zero in the scene, I just came here to see the fight.
I think the solution you're alluding to was right under their noses: the Dragon Mark. If someone else with the Dragon Mark challenges you, you have to fight, or you die. If they fight and lose, the victor can still leave without performing a fatality, setting up Round 2.
Mortal Kombat 2021 is a 10 year old smashing together his older brother/dad’s Hot Toys MK figures, and he just learned how to say the F word that day. And Cole is the one toy that still fills the store shelves after each other character has already sold out.
"Death means nothing" Thats actually another reference to the game and is a huge problem with the games as well. Death truly means nothing. When you die in the MK universe you just get sent to hell (The Netherealm) until you find a way to escape. This has happened a ridiculous number of times throughout the entire series.
While in the game it brings a good reason why characters that died can return for the next game, it needs to get some context for a movie. It can be a reason for a villain to gloat, because on the the heroes victories will have meaning. It can be a story arc showing the process of someone escaping. But just throwing it in like that is a reference to the games without any reason to the story of the movie.
I mean yeah but also no like…a normal person can’t escape the nether realm. Scorpion didn’t really escape he just became a demon. Even in mkx they didn’t escape they came like anti versions of the characters. It’s also why they hate on raider so much lol everyone just goes to hell no matter how good they are.
This has been the thing since the very first Mortal Kombat game in existence, you can't hate on this pivotal part of the lore. The problem is this movie uses that line to justify the characters being shit. Like saying "Don't worry, we'll fix them posthumously."

Actually, had they followed the mythos of the game, everything you mentioned as an issue in story-telling would make more sense. For example: Jax first appeared in a game with regular arms, but im the next game he had metal arms. The reason? At the end of the original game/tournament, Outworld says "screw it" and invades anyway. Jax (having lost in the tournament) felt he needed an upgrade to better compete, so he got some secret cybernetic enhancements that the government was working on...the movie made ridiculous changes to 20 year-old background stories that made this story more convoluted than it needed to be, and just created plot hole after plot hole after plot hole

@@DJ-gd1to LMAO shut the hell up with that nonsense. Nothing about this has anything to do with the "blm thing" at all. What the director said has no correlation.
They need to make Mortal Kombat like Bloodsport: build the entire movie around this single tournament, and that venue should be where character development, interactions and story should happen. Easy fun, compelling action.
That's the main problem in this new movie: character development. Goro, for example. In the first movie, he was built to be fearsome, the film slowly shows us the idea of him being unbeatable, until almost the end, so Cage's victory was really special. Now, Goro shows up and, in a couple scenes ahead, he's killed. Same for the others: not a single relatable char. Is it that hard to build an interesting character out of an established game franchise built around - you bet - characters?
This movie felt like it was two completely different scripts smashed into one. My brain still hurts thinking about how moments of brilliant cinematography (like Subzero's hailstorm attack on the ice cream shop) are in the same movie as Kung Lao loudly announcing "Flawless Victory!" to himself as his friends are getting their asses kicked.

So...when they try to do a fan service instead of telling a compelling story, the movie just becomes a crap. Even though the fight scenes were good, the movie overall was a let down for me. And, as you've mentioned, this movie would've been so much better if it was just about scorpion's journey on getting revenge.

This adaptation is like a college-level film production without prior grounded consistency with the character-design and background story within the source material.
Nah, it's like a college level essay where they give you 5-10 characters that you need to use but you are stoned and way too late, so you just write some barely coherent stuff and hope you somehow get a passing grade ;).

It has always been an integral part of Scorpion's character arc that he is obsessed with idol singers, and he got in the habit of randomly shouting that particular english phrase after listening to The Sparkling Yuki-nyan 5's hit single "Get Over Here (Into My Kokoro)" on loop for 36 hours straight. This lead to the eventual revelation that his wife and child had contracted the hit on their entire family themselves.

Yep, you're right, except the tournament hasn't started yet, so of course you'd need excuses to have 1v1 fights in a scenario where the bad guys are intentionally trying to take out the competition before the tournament. Could have had better excuses, but they clearly wanted the story arc of the baddies attempting to cheat the MK system by attacking early so the tournament would be a guaranteed win. I think the thing with many video game movies is a lot of directors are just interested in banking off the novelty of these titles. Rather than creating a narrative that compliments whats already established or paces and challenges itself in a way that compliments the feel of a common video game experience.
My friends and I had an absolute blast with this movie. Not because we thought it was good, we realised very early on that it wasn't, we were laughing at it the entire time, it's so over the top and serious about itself but also hilarious, a good combo. It has found a place in my Dumb/Silly/Entertaining category.
Yeah, to be honest I wasn't expecting much except to spend a couple of hours letting my brain shut down and recharge while I enjoyed some spectacle and fan service. I was therefore satisfied - in fact, I got more than I bargained for in the opening sequence so that was a plus. But I can understand the frustration of people who just want to see their favourite game serviced in a way that advances their enjoyment of the source material. That's why I've not watched any of the movies based on any games that I'm genuinely invested in, like Assassin's Creed or Warcraft.
@@pszczolka80 I'm similar, I've never seen the assassins creed, warcraft or hitman movies, though I maintain the Prince of Persia movie is surprisingly decent, compared to most game adaptations. As for people not liking it when the stuff they love is adapted poorly, I can certainly relate, I'm a big Wheel of Time and Dresden Files fan, and while I still think the WoT show has potential, the Dresden show was a travesty. Jim Butcher deserves better, and I hope to someday see a good adaptation of his work.
Step one to making a MK movie: make it the tournament. Step two: if you wanna have an unknown protag, make them fail to win the tournament at least once
I was hyped for this. But then when I found out Lewis was playing Cole Young, rather than an actual MK character I was just like "awww shit, here we go again"

Yeah. The first scene is just 10/10.
Totally agree, was really hoping Scorpion and Sub Zero would fight through an entire tournament just to get at each other, neither caring which side they were on, while other characters from both sides try to get them to see sense. That way you get the revenge plot, tension and give characters and their decisions weight.

You had your Eyes shut during that Kung Lao Fatality?
Not really, 3 months later and i totally forgot the movie existed.
2 years later and no one ever brings it up. Even the original Mortal Kombat movie had a decently long legacy
Moral of the story: don’t adapt a video game franchise for its gimmick; adapt it for the story and universe that it built.
Even then with most of those character deaths being off-screen after 2 leading into 3, and you could still count almost every rostered character with a canon death on 1 hand.
if "hey look it's the guy.. omg he's gonna do the thing.. OMG HE DID THE THING" is the hook of the movie then you have fucked up
The problem is that it's clear that the director and writer didn't know much or cared about MK universe.
Str8 up
I think that's what made the Sonic movie work.
This movie should've been set in 1600s Japan, building up the rivalry between Scorpion and Subzero.

honestly, dont think about it too much. Like, where did the augments even come from then? I just take everything in this movie with a grain of salt
I understand your point, but this is a movie where someone got sliced into 2 can still scream
The two major flaws for me was having the main character be someone that's not of the Mortal Kombat world and their power basically being black panthers suit.

@@mlgamings6110 Thats what is wrong with this entire video because the market audience for this movie was always people who played the game

"Death means nothing"
Thats actually another reference to the game and is a huge problem with the games as well.
