  • It is a very good time to be a Godzilla fan. The biggest Japanese monster of all time is getting his third American-made production on the big screens, internationally, with Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), finally with Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah. But if you wanna know what that’s all about and where it all came from, here's my top 5 picks for the new watcher.

Shin Godzilla is my favorite because it went in such a drastically different direction, bringing back the allegories and political implications of the 1954 original. I also don't think it's that crazy for me to say that the atomic breath scene is just... beautiful. Maybe not as action packed as most movies in the series, but also a much more poignant film with more message than just "kaiju rumble time." Me and one of my friends watched it right after Pacific Rim and it was really cool to see such drastically different tones in (what are on paper) two very similar movie premises.

For monster fighting GMK, Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla, & Tokyo SOS would probably be the best ones to watch after. I'd love it if the new films could combine CG with Henson quality practical effects and give us monsters who really feel like they're really there, but also emote and move nicely and have body plans that go beyond what a human in a suit can be.

Godzilla Minus One just came in as a crowning entry to the franchise, so much so that I would potentially even put it as the number one film to watch for beginners. At least number two behind the original. What a spectacle in theaters!
