I doubt Scorpion’s actor, Hiroyuki Sanada, was mostly using a stunt double for his fight scenes. He’s older but can still do action and he’s a longtime martial artist.
I don't think you get how movies work. Generally a studio doesn't care what you know, its exceptionally hard for someone to do their own action scenes....Hiroyuki Sanada is 60 years old, chances are more likely than not they used a stunt actor when they could and or possibly digitally put his head on a stunt actor's body.
@@lutherheggs451 So why did they cast martial artist/stuntmen in the roles of Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Cole, Kung Lao, etc.? You do realize that a big reason why you cast martial artists as characters who do martial arts is so those actors can, you know, perform martial arts, right? Tom Cruise isn’t the only older actor still doing physical stuff. If you actually saw some of Sanada’s other recent work, it’s obvious he’s performing throughout the fight scenes, even if stuntmen may still have been utilized as well. But maybe you’re right, when studios cast Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Jackie Chan, Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero) or the other actors from The Raid, Ronda Rousey, and Gina Carano in TV shows and movies, maybe their martial arts skills are used as little as possible. They’re just being cast for their acting chops, right? I don’t think you get how movies work.
There might be other times on certain films/sets where some production companies intervene and insist on stunt doubles to be used in some cases where the insurance company might refuse coverage for certain stunts. I'm sure in cases the bean counters wag their fingers at an actor doing a scene, willing and trained or not. But I agree that casting trained stunt people and martial artists would be a benefit so more shots could be up close during the choreography
@@spottyhead Right, I believe Jackie Chan has complained about the restrictions he experienced in Hollywood after working in Hong Kong. There’s also an interview from just a few years ago with Sanada, when he was on Westworld, in which he talked about doing his all his own fight scenes in the show. But with your “expert” knowledge, I’m sure you’d insist they’re all wrong and don’t know what they’re talking about, right?

Yeah it felt weird why they make a new character for audience to relate too when they have johnny cage, a Hollywood actor who is clueless about the situation he is in or Liu Kang, a chosen warrior from earth that raiden have high hopes for to win the mk tournament. They want to be realistic with the arcana but how tf does the game itself is much more realistic than the movie? Lmao

I never thought we would ever see a PHYSICAL PLOT ARMOR! There's no tournament, Reptile was just some random lizard that Kano ganked... 95 did it better.
I liked the opening, Sub Zero himself, and the actual Mortal Kombat stuff in it, but playing thru the story modes of MK (2011) - MK 11 Aftermath, it's not even close what's better. Hollywood is creatively bankrupt and the video game industry is roaring right past it to the moon.

The only other thing this review needed was The Angry Video Game Nerd to be able to chime in & give his opinion on the film like how they did during the 'Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins' review, the 'Street Fighter: The Movie' review & the 'Mortal Kombat: Annihilation' review, for example...

They're definitely setting up more but it's good, James wan had more hands on than they give him credit for. He works with the guy who did upgrade which was amazing. Tony is just trying to gain views.
The amount of manipulation that Raiden did to bring Scorpion back seems... overmuch? Like, sure, the manipulations also upgraded Jaxx, but... well... it's hard to not ask "Wouldn't there be an easier way to go about the whole tournament thing, Lightning Boy? Surely you could have skipped some steps and got similar results an era earlier... right?"
Y’all totally missed when Cole gets his suit his daughter out of the blue starts coaching him on how the suit works. I died laughing when she yells, “Use your overdrive!”
I only liked the scorpion scenes in this movie. Most of the actors were well cast but had nothing to do. Kung lao and Liu Kang had Excellent chemistry. That's about all the positive things I can say.
Uhh.. in the original 1995 movie it wasn't about which side was "winning" or "losing" because Raiden made it clear at the start that one of the 3 Earthrealm warriors would decide the outcome of the tournament. But in this movie there is no structure as it's essentially a big free-for-all.
Am surprised they never compare cole young to alice from resident evil movies. Cause that's how i feel with this movie, it's alice from resident evil all over again
The sub zero/scorpion parts were great, but the whole middle portion was trash that went too fast and made no sense. And the biggest issue is that the director CHOSE to have NO TOURNAMENT!! This movie was a glorified trailer for the next one.
The blood of his ancestor activated the spear, it’s alluded to throughout the movie. Most of your gripes are legitimate but I felt like that was explained well enough.
I love it when this movie gets picked apart. I haven't managed to sit through it without falling asleep and I've tried to watch it at least 20 times since I'm a shameless MK fan.
I saw that recent Power Rangers movie on opening night. I could see a skit with Tony as Scorpion, Justin as Raiden, Kieran as Sub-Zero, Newt as Johnny Cage, and Crystal as Sonya. They must defend the store for Shang Tsung's rental fees.
I'm down for this!
not funny
Justin as Mojo from The X-Men.
Lmao
This is the best cast for hack the movies. Please more episodes with kieran and justin!
I'm happy that the 3 of them kept doing movie and other reviews. It was my favorite section on cinemassacre. Definitely will check out the podcast.
Are they no longer with Cinemassacre?
@@Ronnie06spartan
I've seen each of the guys do other things together with James on cinemassacre, but not movie reviews. James actually recommended Hack the Movies for a lengthier review of the new Mortal Kombat movie. Probably a mix of quarantine and time for other projects?
The movie had a great Sub-Zero and a really funny Kano, but that's it. The rest was utter trash, and that arcana rubbish was both lazy and silly. They managed to make Raiden completely unlikable too. The 1995 move > this garbage.
true
What did you think about Scorpion? Sure he was like in ten minutes of the movie but I thought he was pretty cool
Let's see more of this type of review , harkening back to Rental Reviews, which I'm sure anyone who watches any of you guys on youtube would agree is sorely missed ! Good review , hope to see you all again in the same place many many more times!!
Cole's blood was on Scorpions blade when Sub Zero took it from him. That is how he comes back.
Srsly this was so obvious.
How about that Arcana ...got to unlock your fireball or special move...it felt like Nightwolf trying to show Liu Kane how to do his Animality in the second movie
It made a lot of sense, works like the head bands from afro samurai. Makes it so that we don't have just ANYONE joining mortal Kombat without proving themselves.
@@Clyptonix I was talking about the arcana with the special abilities. I thought that was dumb
I mean not anyone could just enter before that jefferey.
Yeah it was so stupid..
@@Clyptonix So if grandpa Jeffrey ran over Liu Kang being a drunk driver that night, does that mean he gets the "special" Mark too? Does it still make sense to you? If so, then uhhh, yeah. Lol
Bring the team back for more episodes. I miss it so much
@rickey holmes mike quit cinnemassacre what half a year ago? That's about all I know haven't seen him do anything involving James since.. not sure though.
@Dr. Hibbs something called covid
This is better than Rental Reviews, I feel like James doesn't have his heart in the content anymore and hasn't for a while.
I feel it depends what subject the content is about with James, cos he does seem as though his heart isn’t in it with some videos, but then there are a lot of others where you can really see his enthusiasm for what he’s talking about. When the topic of older films comes up I think he’s maybe happier then, know what I mean.
I liked this vid, but they were seemingly confused by things that I found the film explained perfectly well.
I like both
Scorpion & Subzero Chronicles in feudal Japan for the entire film would have been 10/10. Yes include other characters.
looking forward to this, rental reviews was my favorite show on the other channel.
Where was the freakin dang damn tournament?!? That's ALL of mortal kombat
Part two it's a set up movie
I mean if you're going by the majority of the games it's barely any part of Mortal Kombat after like 4
@@Diablo98415 I only played the first ones
And Cole's character felt almost like a tease to a Johnny cage reveal like an AKA situation 😂
Coles character give them someone to play around with, someone who doesn't already have a known story like johnny, Sonya, ETC everyone complaining about Cole, but no one brings any other reasons besides these tards. This review makes me see how dumb and try hard Tony is.
@@Clyptonix regardless.. coles character DIDNT need to be in this n shouldn’t have been when u got all this.. imo the first MK movie should of focused on sub-zero n scorpion that’s it then the rest come in. Imagine marvel makin an avengers movie but creates a brand new generic ass character to take lead over the rest.. nothin against the actor, he still could’ve been in this but as a diff character whether they make him some like a takeda or some..
If they do a part 2, the only thing I'll be happy about is, Cole is killed by shang tsungs shinanagins immediately, the elder gods come in and say "this is y we cant have nice things", liu emerges as the true chosen 1 so the tournament can finally begin. Wham bam etc, etc.
the kungpow reference alone just made my day
This movie’s biggest sin, in my opinion, is including The Pit and then not performing the Pit fatality.
Awesome to see the old crew back together!
It's great to see someone else as offended as I was by this movie. I ranted for 20 minutes about it and couldn't tell if I was overreacting but you guys made me feel justified.
Shang Tsung + Bruce Dickinson wig = Thulsa Doom
Love this gang of losers, we need Justin and Kieran back! Sorry for what happened to you, Kieran... you were, are and will be the best host that has ever graced these shows. Even if you don't come back, thanks for sharing with us your warm and fun attitude and your point of view on all things games and movies. Miss you, guys!
Kieran can come back when he wants to!
Love to see Kieran and Justin on the show! You three have the best commentary LOL!
Kieran is back to his old self. Gotta thank Crystal for using the Darkman skin graph formula on him.
lol
What was his new self like?
Justin, as he's drinking, look at Tony like a cat trading a dump in a litter box watching it's owner
Right!
Hahah
I love how there’s VHS Tapes of the cult movie characters that appeared as guest fighters in the modern MK games next the Mortal Kombat stuff on the desk. Nice subtle detail there, guys.
Movie 2 will end with: “bring back all those who have died. It’s time for the tournament”
Yea they just need to reboot the reboot try again. Do what they did with the original but you know better story that fits the lore we know. I hate when movie adaptations do there own stupid thing always hated it and I’m pretty sure most people do
Kieran looks way healthier. Tony and Justin look the same
This is why you shouldn’t have canceled Rental Review, there just to much to talk about, plus the nostalgia it brought a was awesome… great to see you all back together again for a review!
Well, didn’t really have a choice I don’t think. RR was a James thing when it came down to it, and he didn’t want to do it anymore from what I understand. Obviously I don’t know what their arrangement is, but at least he’s able to keep on using the video store set.
I preferred when James was on it, but I mostly enjoy these videos still.
Scorpions "harpoon" has been designed usually around the ninja's kunai. Kunai were gardening tools as seen in the movie. Ninja's were traditionally farmers that started fighting back against the oppression from samurai
Makes more sense than a snake growing from the palm of his hand, lol. I'm glad they actually stuck to the storyline and made him a good guy and not a demon.
It's great to see Kieran! I always enjoyed his opinions in Rental Reviews. Trimming your beard was a great choice 👌🏼
To me part of the excitement is the build up to the fight...the crowd, the atmosphere, the movie gladiator was great at that....this had zero anticipation or atmosphere. There was no build up to any of the fights. They might as well have been fighting in an empty room.
They basically were fighting in an empty room
Ever played mortal Kombat? Cuz it's basically like watching 2 master MK players go at it.
Kung Lao was awesome, Kano was the scene stealer. And subzero was a beast. Kabal was awesome too. Everybody else could have been better.
Yes, for a movie where absolutely no actor was taking the movie seriously, Kung Lao shines through. Him and Kano are the only things I enjoyed about the movie.
Kabal was awful and Kung lao's actor was si bad
I loved Kung Lao. I liked Liu. Kano was annoying but that was the point, which worked well but he was funny.
@@ssjup81 I don't like how stiff and serious Liu Kang was in this movie. Did he even smile ONE time? And this was BEFORE he lost Kung Lao, I will hate to see how dark he would be in a sequel.... so I'm not gonna watch it at all until they fix movie 1 1st. I wouldn't even get a bootleg copy
I had to comment on the beginning: "Scorpion was 5 feet away from his house and he didn't hear what was going on????" It wasn't like the well was a mile away! That part infuriated me. 😆
I am so thankful that you guys are continuing "Rental Reviews" even if it's under a different name. I hope James can join you guys sometime. By the way, Keiran, congratulations on your weight loss. You are looking much healthier dude!
What happened to rental reviews?? 😕
@@beatrizremigio9192 Seems like those videos got way lower view counts than the Nerd videos and the other popular content on James' channel. I guess the other answer is that James has seemed to be super uncomfortable having anyone share video space with him since the start of the pandemic.
@@GusFogle I wouldn't blame him, I mean he's also got a daughter to take care of.
I kept forgetting Cole's name too... For a week I just called him Vanilla Joe....
Lol he is now Vanilla Joe, no question
Honestly, until Raiden said Cole was scorpion's descendant I thought they were just leading us to think he's scorpion's descendant only to reveal that Cole Young was actually Kuai Liang, the second subzero (their names even sound alike) then I thought maybe Raiden was lying or that he's actually descended from both lineages, then he grew that armor and I gave up.
This sounds so much better and I don’t blaming you a for giving up after he grew armor lmao
He did his own review.
@@HackTheMovies- Really?...
I literally had no idea about that until now.; I should go & check it out, then.
Thank you...
At the same time, it would've been nice to have seen the 4 of you get back together, again & do another joint review of a movie based off on the 'Mortal Kombat' franchise.
P.S.: I'm a big fan of the channel & the videos, by the way.
Coles power is to be a punching bag
Cole young's ability is basically wakandan plot armor. It is trying to be as cool as black panther but it's not there yet since the character doesn't have the same personality, which makes Cole fall apart as a character.
Not to mention Cole's armor kinda looks like ass too :P
Tbf black panther sucks almost as much…maybe even more with those annoying accents
Cole is a human punching bag they literally say it in the movie, his whole reason for being there is to train the fighters for the tournament again another thing stated in the movie, did y'all even watch it
It was almost like a 2 hour preview for the real movie with and actual tournament in it.
yep its more of a prequel.
They're definitely setting up more but it's good, James wan had more hands on than they give him credit for. He works with the guy who did upgrade which was amazing. Tony is just trying to gain views.
Prediction for the sequel(lol): They'll acquire Johnny Cage early, Revenant Goro kills Cole and then it'll center more around Lui, Johnny and Sonya.
"okay... That happened" summed it up perfectly
Man I miss rental reviews...
Please do more of these please please please
coles arcana is basically black panthers purple suit, the more damage he takes the more he can dish out.
The other wall image was of Delia and Argus from Armageddon, but everything you said about this movie as a movie is correct.
It wasn't that bad. It was simply ok, without Scorpion it would've been a dud. Also the new MK theme sounds more like Mission Impossible than MK
Lmao
That scene turned from action to comedy
If you wanna see Hiroyuki Sanada kick some serious ass, check out Ninja in the Dragon's Den.
Kieran needs to be in more episodes
I only liked the scorpion scenes in this movie. Most of the actors were well cast but had nothing to do. Kung lao and Liu Kang had Excellent chemistry. That's about all the positive things I can say.
Blaze and Hornbuckle are the 2 people fighting in the background of The Pit 💯 very old school
Uhh.. in the original 1995 movie it wasn't about which side was "winning" or "losing" because Raiden made it clear at the start that one of the 3 Earthrealm warriors would decide the outcome of the tournament. But in this movie there is no structure as it's essentially a big free-for-all.
Damn Kieran. Looking like silent bob in the reboot
The family is fine with watching Cole get his ass kicked because they have an extensive life insurance policy taken out on him.
The Sub Zero actor is signed for 5 movies
I hope the reason I don't see Prognosis: Negative and Cry, Cry Again on the wall behind you is because they're in your VCR at all times!
I feel like that if it was explained, it was threadbare.
I love it when this movie gets picked apart. I haven't managed to sit through it without falling asleep and I've tried to watch it at least 20 times since I'm a shameless MK fan.
I've seen it 3 or 4 times by now. I didnt fall asleep, but I hardly remember it because it was difficult to pay attention.
@@swampdonkey4919 yeah hard to stay engaged. Just another corny action adventure film.
I saw that recent Power Rangers movie on opening night. Not because I was a fan of Power Rangers, but because the movie filmed one-town over from me in Kamloops BC, and I have a friend who was an extra in it. They even paid him to use his car in the movie. I went to see it, just so I could cheer when he appeared on film. But, basically none of the scenes with him or the other extras made it into the theatrical cut. Though his car is visible in one shot. The movie was not good.
I legit thought Cole Young was some weird reimagining of Tanya.
If there's any positive takeaway from this movie it would have to be making a meme out of Kabal.
A family member accidentally bought me The Journey Begins instead of the actual Mortal Kombat movie on VHS. Even back then that was garbage, what were they thinking?
After this great review; you have a new subscriber. Great job guys!
Not sure but feel like ever since a interaction I had with “Hack The Movies” on a previous video he has been taking slight shots at “Rental Reviews” because of my criticism of this show 😂 but nice to see Justin and Kieran for this Mortal Kombat review.
MK 2021 suffered from the same problem as Dragon Ball GT, it had great ideas but the execution was abysmal.
GT AND Super
Oh and Reiko looks like his later appearances
